I don't make it out to Delaware very often, but if anything is going to get me there it's the croissants at Fresh Start Cafe and Bakery. They are out of this world. My top two picks are the everything croissant and the ones filled with pesto. The funny thing is I don't usually even like croissants. Fresh Start's are just THAT good. I also love the owner's community focus. They feature local artwork and host all sorts of local events in their space, even yoga in the back room. We stopped here for a breakfast treat and had the cinnamon rolls and coffee. I was a bit worried about the cinnamon roll not being warm at first, but it didn't even matter. They were soft and gooey and the cream cheese frosting was perfect. They are huge and we probably could have shared one. The staff was friendly and there was a nice amount of space in the bakery so it didn't feel overcrowded. The location is perfect. We were able to walk off the cinnamon rolls while strolling through the surrounding shops. read more

Drove 30 mins just to go there to try a new spot, got there and they didn't have a working card reader so I couldn't order anything. I said I would wait until it was up and running and they told me that they'd been having this issue since 7:15am implying it might be quite some time. The bad part wasn't that the card reader wasn't working (stuff happens) but the employees didn't seem apologetic or offer anything for my major waste of time. IMO just not how I would have handled it hence the 1 star just for my personal experience. read more

Great service! I haven't been here in a long time but I remember coming back when I had a break from class in a fall. It's a small shop but there is so much to choose from! They're very kind when it comes to milk alternatives and will even help you if you're not quite sure on what you want. Their baked goods are PHENOMENAL. I visited this coffee shop while I was out and about. They have a front and back entrance, which leads to a parking lot. They offer almond milk (huge plus for me) and lots of flavor shots to choose from. Staff complimented my glass straws a few months ago, and I recently found out they now offer them in the store. I really appreciate that they are moving to being more environmentally friendly. Unfortunately every time I ask for no straws they still place them in the cup, defeating the purpose of me bringing in my own straw. read more

Picked up a dozen bacon quiche and asparagus quiche for an office meeting this week and it was a smash hit over the ordinary bagels we typically get from a different bakery. We stopped in before church one morning out of curiosity. The employee greeted us immediately and asked if we had any questions. We ended up taking her suggestion on some flavored Lattes and chocolate croissants. My girlfriend also tried the Quiche at a later visit and reported it was "life altering". Pretty hard to argue with that. Our bill was about $16 for two coffees and two pastries so we probably won't be going every Sunday, only because we have student loans to pay off first though. Everything is amazing here. My husband brought home coffee from here today. I am not a coffee drinker - I actually loathe the stuff. I've tried it every which way possible - iced, in a latte, you name it - I've tried it...and have never liked it. I stick to tea or energy drinks only. However, my husband brought home Fresh Start Bakery's SF Caramel Soy Latte today. I didn't even believe it had coffee in it at first because it tasted so smooth! It was sweet, but not "my teeth are going to rot in my head as I drink this," sweet. The caramel flavor was also surprisingly genuine as well, and I did verify that it was in fact a sugar-free caramel latte. It was something I'd definitely drink daily! I was in shock - was it possible that after many years of hating it I'd finally found a coffee drink that I ACTUALLY LIKED? Considering I've tried everything on Starbucks' menu and hated it, the fact alone that I love their latte earns Fresh Start Bakery a five-star review in my opinion. However, their outrageously delicious baked goods stand head and shoulders above anything one can find anywhere else, which further confirms their five star rating. Seriously, everything I've tried so far has been incredible. On a side note, I've read some reviews mentioning their prices being on the high side. My jaw about hit the floor when I read those comments. With cinnamon rolls the size of your face and cake pops so rich you're convinced they somehow crammed a pound of Belgian chocolate into those little things, it's common sense they'd charge a tad more than Kroger would for boxed product that sits on a shelf for days. You get what you pay for, people! It's called "value exchange!" The prices are, A.) not at all exorbitant, and B.) totally appropriate for the high quality of product they provide to their customer. Just my two cents, of course. I don't usually buy stuff directly from bakeries, so maybe I'm wrong on that one. read more

This was my first visit here and will be back. I had the almond croissant and a chocolate shortbread cookie. Both were very delicious. They had a great selection of items to choose from so the hardest part was making a decision. The space is very nice also with tables and bars set us that have usb connectors so you could hang out for a bit if you wanted to. We very much enjoyed our trip and look forward to our next visit! read more

This is my favorite place to go in Delaware for baked goods. They are always fresh and delicious. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The baker is dedicated to making the best quality products she can. We make sure we stop in any time we are downtown. One day I even stopped in three times. The coffee is great and the people who work there are friendly. The decor does need some help, but they are putting their start-up funds into making great food. They can work on the decorating later. The only thing that would be better is the bench seating across from the counter has two large tablets and no chairs on the other side. I would prefer narrower tables so that chairs could be added. This would allow for four people to sit at the tables. I recommend a visit! read more

This new spot is really nice! My wife and I have tried the cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants, and some other assorted pastries from Fresh Start. The cinnamon rolls with the cream cheese icing are some of the best I've ever had! (I'm very picky about cinnamon rolls and I'm even a self-proclaimed cinnamon roll snob!) The wife states the same about the chocolate croissants. They also make a very good latte, as good or better than the Starbucks latte I drink almost every week day. While traveling through Delaware, OH recently, we stopped at a few antique shops. While crossing the street, the word "BAKERY" caught my eye. Now, I don't know about you, but any business with the word "BAKERY" in it warrants further investigation. It probably helped that the owner (?) noticed us checking out the place and waived us in. Immediately, my eyes checked out the front-facing display case full of pastries. I was hooked. There was a second case around the counter holding more goodies. My biggest problem was deciding what to try, especially knowing the cooler I brought for traveling gave me limited space. Everything looked delicious and fresh. I happened to be holding coffee I had purchased at another establishment up the street, and the girl at the counter asked what I was drinking. I told her (café Americano), and she made me the same thing THEIR way to try (no charge!). I ended up with something called a Pumpkin Truffle, a shortbread cookie, and a coconut macaroon. Prices seemed very reasonable. My purchase was boxed up and we left. We didn't get to the pumpkin truffle until later in the day. I don't know what they put in them, but I suddenly wished I had more. The pumpkin flavor was dominant without being overwhelming, as were the spices. Just the right balance. Very moist and melted in my mouth. The shortbread and macaroon were enjoyed the following day, and still tasted fresh. The shortbread was thick and buttery, with just the right amount of crunch (yet softer on the inside). Probably one of the best shortbreads I have had. The macaroon was equally delicious. All baked goods left a very pleasant after-taste. I would highly recommend this bakery and will definitely stop back in if I'm ever in that area again (I'd even go out of my way if I'm CLOSE!). read more
