If it had not been for the hype surrounding this place (especially within the Yelp community) I do not know if I would have found Freshroots because it is tucked away in a mostly medical complex off of Mahan. I find it very fitting that this restaurant is surrounded by medical facilities because after you fall in love with their exquisite menu items you will definitely need the attention of a qualified clinician. What I love most about this place is they keep it 100 in their name of fresh. Often times as a recent college graduate I still find my friends wanting to eat junk like we did back in undergrad, but since coming to medical school I have been trying to find a healthier lifestyle built around good food. Freshroots gives me exactly what I am looking for with quality and fresh delivered at a fair price with a smile. It took me a while to make it to this place once I happened upon the golden knowledge of its existence because they are closed after 3pm as well as on weekends. I might have had to make some adjustments to my schedule to make the trip, but I would do it again faster than a tachycardic heartbeat. My choice for this first pass metabolism was the grilled chicken caesar salad, which left both my belly and my wallet very happy. Just because I am such a fan and was in need of an afternoon pickup I also opted for some of their Lucky Goat coffee, which has quickly become a favorite of my unique to Tallahassee. I definitely look forward to making a trip back to Freshroots ASAP because there is so much more to this case that I need to discover. Great prices for the food but the day I came it took almost 1.5 hours to get the food. I would only recommend call ahead. There were about 30 angry people waiting inside & outside, with some getting refunds. I won't be back unless I have the entire day off for a 2 hour lunch. They need to get more front end and kitchen staff, especially since they mostly serve people with 1 hour lunch breaks. I have failed a few times at restaurants with glowing Yelp reviews before, so I was a bit skeptical of this place. I tried the breakfast take out (eggs Benedict) and lunch, and I'll definitely try other items on their menu. The best part is the freshness and the price point. So many of the restaurants in Tallahassee serve mediocre food with high price tag. It is always cheaper to eat out any other cities, unless you compare the prices with NYC or London. I FINALLY decided to check it out Monday after renewing my tag and I can say the Yelp reviews did it justice, I loved it! I had the Hooper with the Mac & Cheese and was impressed with both. Although I would've preferred more cheese and less of the hummus, the sandwich was delicious. When in season, they even have salmon selections that are also under the $8 price tag. Amazing but let's not get too crunk. We still have to taste the food...... I ordered a Bacon, Egg & Cheddar Melt along with a Create Your Own Omelet. I got my receipt, my cup for water and sat down at the table. After about 10 minutes, the cashier brought my food to the table. You gotta be kidding me!!! AIN'T NO way this omelet was only $7.75!!! That mutha sucka was HUGE!!! The Create Your Own Omelet is only $6 however, I added an extra cheese and an extra meat but still.....without it, I challenge you to find a bigger omelet in Tallahassee for only 6 freakin' dollars!!! The melt was only $5 and was full sandwich-sized but cut in half. I haven't even begun to describe the taste. Outstanding! You can tell they were back there cooking all of this up after the order. No pre-made junk here. I had never heard of Freshroots Kitchen until today but for some reason, the Food Gods wanted to bless my taste buds this morning. Three words: I'm into it. I really wanted the salmon sandwich, but I came an hour before it closes, so I'm not mad at them for being out of stock. I got the club even though many other things caught my eye. It was delish. And seriously, $7.50 for a fat sandwich? That's a good deal. I got chips too and I'm way too full - definitely not necessary to order a side. I also got a tasty mango jarritos which hit the spot. Bottom line: EXCEPTIONAL breakfast & lunch menu. Exceptionally creative, exceptionally prepared, exceptionally presented, exceptionally thoughtful. Freshroots merits an update from me, largely because we find ourselves headed to this gem of a restaurant over and over again. The wife & mother-in-law LOVE it, and I certainly understand why. I find myself grinning foolishly after polishing off a meal here myself. The menu items are top-notch, and their ingredients are clearly laid out on the chalkboard menu by the door. If you're persnickety and need EVERYTHING to go your way, they'll accommodate you too. At the bottom of the chalkboard, you'll find the "create your own" forms that you can fill out. In other words, you can go ahead and be the chef here. I still like it that not that many folks know about this place - that doesn't help the ownership here, but it means that it still gets to feel like "our place that isn't yet overrun by everybody". Particular items I like are: 1. The Lucky Goat Coffee - specifically the cold-brew. It's just good. if you haven't tried this before, treat yourself. 2. The App. It's every bit as good as Panera's app (Panera, mind you, is a large multinational corporation. Freshroots, mind you, is a small uninational operation...) 3. Eggs Benedict. (not "The Freshroots Benedict", not "Fabuloso Benedicts" - just straight-up Eggs Benedict). Oh, and for only $6.00. Go figure out how to get poached eggs for that price anywhere else in town. Heck, some menus make it clear they "don't know how to poach no eggs..." 4. "The Smokin'" - it's my favorite sandwich (Salmon). Absolutely worth the hype and 5 stars. The restaurant is bright, airy, and spotlessly clean. The patio is situated nicely so that you hardly notice the cars on Riggins Road. And the breakfast sandwiches are outstanding, especially the egg, avocado and bacon jam on toasted sourdough. I'd drive miles just to get more of the bacon jam. I only wish that they had some sort of sides like potatoes, or fruit to accompany the sandwich. Even a small salad would be nice and would leave the sandwich less naked on the plate. And the Lucky Goat coffee is a nice touch. Note to tea drinkers: they don't sell hot tea; only iced. I also think we should start a write-in campaign to have them open for breakfast on the weekends. It sounds odd but it works so well! Top it off with some Lucky Goat coffee and it is a great midday snack. They have make your own salads that are decently priced (I always add in extra cilantro). Pick you lettuce, meat, veggies and dressings. Definitely get their amazing tomato bisque! Flavor combination and texture is so heart whelming. Freshroots has super nice staff and they offer discounts for military as well as through Yelp check-ins. The food is always made fresh and has a healthier taste to it.
