I've been going to Schnell's every Sunday morning for breakfast for about a year now, and it has truly become a highlight of my week. When I first started, I didn't know anyone, but that quickly changed. After just a few visits, we got to know Ms. Gale as well as several of the regular customers, and over time those connections have turned into meaningful relationships. What really sets this place apart is Ms. Gale. She goes above and beyond to make every guest feel welcome and valued. She takes the time to sit and talk with you, making you feel like more than just another customer, all while still providing attentive service to everyone in the restaurant. Ms. Gale is an absolute rockstar, and her warmth and dedication are a big reason I keep coming back every week. If she ever retires, I might just have to retire from Sunday breakfasts too! read more

Was served leftover food that was room temperature - AT BEST. When I sent it back, the waitress returned with the same piece of chicken, about three minutes later. Clearly, the FUNKY COOK opted to drop the chicken into some hot oil. I'd like to tell the cook where to shove his chicken! I've been going to Schnell's since the 1980s. I have NEVER gotten a bad or just satisfactory meal there. NEVER! It's always delicious! I especially love the half-shrimp/half oyster platter with onion rings as my "side" choice. DIVINE! I also love their daily specials, pancakes, desserts, stewed chicken and their iced tea is yummy and refreshing. I love that it's a laid back atmosphere and just country type setting. Yesterday, my niece and I were in there enjoying lunch and it started to rain outside. One of the staff screamed out to the guests, "Does everyone have their windows up? It's rainin'!" Love that. You can't get that anywhere else. My friend LOVED the fried chicken when she used to go with me there. She told me it was the BEST fried chicken she ever tasted. I almost always order the half shrimp/half oyster platter because nobody makes it better than Schnell's. My oysters yesterday were HUGE and perfectly seasoned. So was the shrimp. Schnell's Restaurant & Bar Family Dining is a great old school restaurant with a nice rear area with two separate bars. This is the only bar I've ever seen that sells lottery tickets in the entire USA which I would guess there are more somewhere so if you know of any let me know. This is also one of the very few places in the greater New Orleans area that is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Schnell's has good po'boys, fried chicken, burgers along with a wide variety of other good choices. They also have some fantastic onion rings and a great selection of rotating daily specials each day of the week. Their dessert selection is limited to just the one choice of bread pudding. Before our current "situation" and "troubles" they would host live music which for now is on hold. Overall this is a nice spot to check out especially for the daily specials. There's no excuse why it has taken me so long to sing the praises of Schnell's. Behind that glorious German name is some of the most delicious fried chicken you will ever put in your mouth, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I stopped in here months ago for an easy dinner and I was the only person in here on a Friday night. I had a man's hunger, so I decided to tuck into their fried chicken and some onion rings. In case you weren't aware: I'm an onion ring snob and only the best will do. Schnell's rings passed the "dip" test (the batter stays on when dipping into ketchup or other dip of your choosing). Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside- perfect. The fried chicken is out-of-this-world. For $10 you get all the white meats fried to juicy perfection. Unless you are looking to break some sort of record, you are going to need a go-box. The waitress couldn't have been nicer and she even apologized for the wait time for the fried chicken. Look, I don't mind waiting for fried chicken at all- I know the good stuff takes time. If you didn't grow up on the Westbank, this place might not be on your radar, but it's definitely worth a visit. read more

For years I have heard how great this place was, but despite several trips, I am not a fan. Schnell's is about as local of a place you can get. It is located on 4th street and has been around for a very long time. I would imagine they have a very steady stream of locals which means they aren't exactly friendly to the new comers. I have been here three or four times and every time the service has been lacking. I have felt like asking where to order, or for a drink refill was more of an imposition than it should have been. On my most recent trip I asked if we should order at the counter or grab a table and the server grumbled something along the lines of go sit down and someone will be with you eventually. I ordered a roast beef poor boy and side of gravy fries. I think they used some sort of liquid cheese on the fries and they were not very good. The roast beef looked great, but lacked flavor. Their version is a grilled roast beef, so the bread gets very crispy. The crispiness prevents gravy from soaking into the bread which I think takes away from the sandwich. It is doubtful I will give Schnell's a fifth chance to impress me. read more

I won't return. My family and I (husband) had a seafood platter. The seafood had a nice crust but bland, the only thing that was pretty good was the stuffed crab which I didn't know what it was at first glance bc the outer crust was really dark, and it wasn't in a crab shell. It was more like a fried crab stuffing. My son had a burger and fries, which wasn't filling. It was just a handful of fries and small burger with one round slice of pickle, and I had a $16 shrimp salad that had old harden grilled shrimps, one piece of unripe tomato and the end cuts of the lettuce burg. I asked the waitress can I substitute my bread, and she said, Yes. Well I ordered mixed veggies( that I had to separately pay for), I wouldn't have served that to my dog! It was also old, over cooked and discolored! I went on to pay for everything bc my husband didn't want me to make a fuss, but I will never go there again! read more

This was my first time at Schnells but it won't be my last. My dad and I came for a Saturday evening dinner. It was about 7:30, and it was pretty quiet.'our waitress was friendly and helpful all evening. We each ordered fried chicken. He got potato salad. I got sweet potato fries and gumbo. And we shared hush puppies. The chicken was delicious! Hot, crispy, not greasy, moist, juicy. Perfect. The sweet potato fries and gumbo were also very good. The hush puppies were okay. And my dad said he liked his potato salad. I ordered a "side order" of the spaghetti and meatballs to take home and was shocked at the huge tray full of pasta, sauce and two giant meatballs that came. I ordered two hamburger steak dinners. It came with one scoop of mashed potatoes, one scoop of shredded lettuce that was supposed to be a salad, and probably about a 1 pound hamburger steak. I ordered over the phone and didn't ask the price. I figured it would be 20 or 30 bucks or. But to my surprise when I got there It was more than 50 bucks. I've come here a few times. Despite the usually slow service, dirty restaurant and mediocre food, it's decent. Today, my family and I showed up, we were given one menu for a table of 3. When we finally got the other 2, 10 minutes later, we had already decided what we were going to order. I ordered the French fry poboy with chili. Upon receiving, I ate one half and was surprised to see mold growing on my chili. This is beyond disgusting and disappointing for the reputation this place receives. My wife & I ate there last night. We were impressed by everything we had. Of course the roast beef po-boy is a standout. Go for what I'd call pressed & dressed as it is grilled like a panini. Just do it. Probably one of the best roast beef po-boys in NOLA & surrounding area. Shrimp stew with fish was excellent. For dessert the bread pudding was quite good. Service was quick and waitresses were nice. We were both impressed enough to plan on going back on a regular basis. So we know it going to be a roast beef PB P&D along with something else next time. I went to this restaurant again today for lunch, it's a neighborhood diner I really love. I had the seafood stuffed bell pepper with Mac and cheese And potato salad and my best friend had their famous grilled roast beef poboy dressed. We both agree that it's the best sloppy, crispy, tender roast beef anywhere. And we are both From New Orleans! My lunch was also amazing, homemade with love. Lots of seafood with a simple stuffing in a beautiful green pepper. Their Mac and cheese is always creamy and hot, and their potato salad is just like my mom made. I'm sorry I didn't take a photo, I got too excited when the food was put on the table! Our server was friendly as usual, no matter which lovely lady you get. I never think about writing reviews for places that seem like institutions, but I'm making an effort to expand what I write about. Now looking at all of these other reviews up and down the list and seeing a bunch of bad calls I'm not sure if it's just that I can't think of a bad experience at this place ever. They haven't changed with the times though, so you're going to find a lot of fossil items on the menu. The Shrimp and Oyster Poboys have been my go to for over 20 years and I recently stopped in for one when my dad was in town. The place seems like a time capsule, and I think I enjoy coming here for just that reason. read more

Horrible! They didn't clean my chicken before frying it. It was strips!!! They just pulled it out the freezer, defrosted it, dunked it in batter and fried it. Nasty. Jambalaya had no flavor or zest. I think a Zatarains boxed dinner would have tasted better. Salad was a pile of shredded lettuce and a tomato slice. Dining room looks like a Bingo Hall. A waitress with severe tooth decay, was friendly, but that smile...I was so embarrassed. My Dad was visiting from out of state and wanted to go to a local, unchained restaurant, bad choice. Schnell's Restaurant was probably nice at one time, most likely during the Eisenhower administration, but is today a sad and dreary place with all the hallmarks, down to the dated plastic flowers, of a neighborhood-and-locals-only has-been dump of a restaurant. Nothing is fresh. The server explained to me, in detail, that even though they're located in one of our nation's seafood capitals, everything they serve comes frozen in bags, even their Catfish Dinner is, according to my server, "...not really catfish. It's some kind of overseas fish that comes in frozen." I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

I've had pretty okay food here for reasonable prices. I've had breakfast here that we're really convenient and quick .But I've had Terrible terrible food that was so greasy I couldn't even eat! Get yourself a Roast Beef Po-Boy! The most tender tasty Roast Beef and perfect french bread makes this sandwich fantastic. The chicken stew over rice is just about as close to my momma's cooking as it gets. I suggest making a special trip on the days this dish is offered. I Give them NO STARS This morning I went to Schnell's on 4th St. with a colleague to have breakfast. We ordered our food. The waitress (short,stout,red hair lady) brings out our food and my order was wrong. I told her that I didn't order the hash brown that I ordered cheese grits. This lady grabs my utensils that are in a little white bag and dumps it on the table , picks up my fork and goes in my plate and takes the hash-brown off the plate then puts my fork back onto the table and leaves. HOW NASTY AND UNSANITARY IS THAT??? Never came back to bring me a new set of utensils. My colleague at this point read my facial expression. Mind you, I am trying to hold my composure after what this waitress just had done. She (colleague) tells me just go get a set (utensils) off another table. Which I did. The waitress comes back with my grits. Never once did this lady refilled or even asked if I needed a refill on my drink and don't get me started about her walking from table to table not having her mask on covering the parts that need to be covered since we are still in Phase 2. When it was time to pay my bill, I didn't leave her a monetary tip instead a tip of some constructive criticism! YOUR SERVICE SUCKED!!! I always leave a tip but in this case I was NOT! The waitress then tells me that I was wrong for writing that on the ticket. Sorry if the truth hurts but she should not have gone in my plate ! I asked to see the manager at this point. She replies with, "You will have to get her yourself"..... so I knocked 2 separate times on the door to the kitchen and a lady comes out asking why I knocked so I told her because the waitress told me I had to get the manager myself. I told her what happened and the waitress tells her manager I was lying! Manager said she will talk to the waitress about it. Come to find out , get this.... the waitress is the manager's sister!! Schnell's hasn't lost their touch with Grilled Roast Beef pretty good if you ask me and the Onion Rings are to die for.

I take time to write about Schnell's. First, it's been around forever and exists perhaps on its isolation of opportunity or simply tradition. But what the hay, for a blue collar restaurant of yesteryear it's pretty good. This place was old and established when I was a kid in the seventies. And to this day it's got reasonably good eats. But what it has that is exceptional, unique and stays true to origins is its chicken and sausage gumbo. It's made with the chicken avec Le bone! Sausage of dubious origin. And it's a light roux. Devoid of the ya ya mud roux. And it's been the same for the 45 plus years I've had it. Great late night, lunch or even breakfast on a frosty morning. The sandwiches are great and in general the food is good and it's a bargain. The decor is original, some would say dated, but it's humble brick building houses a crusty old dudes bar, reliable waitresses and food true to New Orleans origins. I'm glad I get to eat there when I can to enjoy the grub. read more
