I had high hopes for delicious Mexican breakfast at Frida Room but it was a shocking disappointment. At best the food was an average of 3 Stars. However, I'm deducting a half point to resemble 2.5 Stars because the quality of food does not live up to the prices charged. I understand the need to remain competitive in the market of gentrifying Pilsen, but the food should match. We ordered: Eggs Any Style- room temp (sunny side up) w/ rock hard toast and bacon. $8 & Molletes- room temp frijoles on toast served with breakfast potatoes. - $7 Let me explain why after reading the menu I chose the cheapest options. They didn't have cafe con leche just regular coffee, no Mexican hot chocolate, and no Mexican rice accompanying any of the dishes on the menu. Red flag. I caught the drift in that I knew this experience was going to be far from authentic and decided to play it safe rather than pay steeper for a mediocre tasting meal. I'm glad I did because the basic dishes we ordered were bland and nothing to rave about. Interior decor is minimalistic trendy but doesn't fully scream Frida. They throw up a few paintings of Frida alongside mounted cotton candy, a mini wall ofrenda, and a painting of a luchador. The lack of thought in design is evident. However, exterior is exciting with eye catching street art on the building. Great look for the neighborhood and photo op spot. I probably won't be returning but, if you decide to give it a go I'd stick to the Americanized items on the menu bc/ I will not vouch for their Mexican food. read more

This restaurant was everything "good". From the moment you walk in the door, the art of Frida adorning the walls, the welcoming staff, and the aroma of amazing cuisine, greet you. There's something for every pallet and they are accomadating to some altering of ingredients. The food came out hot and delicious. Super fresh ingredients and their sauces took it up even another notch. Our waitress was really sweet and it was a great laidback environment to catch up with my friends. I'm attempting this review several months after my visit. To be quite honest I've looked at the menu and I don't recall what I had exactly. I only remember it being very good, and leaving there completely satisfied and impressed. It was delicious tasting food and the atmosphere was energetic and free-spirited. I love Latin culture and I felt immersed and delighted while dining here. Despite a dreary pandemic (I'll reserve my opinion) there were people everywhere, which goes to show just how special it is for people to take the risk, or go through the effort. Have gone in for lunch during the weekdays and I've noticed that it gets pretty packed around 1pm, so I shoot for 12-12:30. You can also make a reservation, but that is only available for weekdays. Some of my favorites are the Chilaquiles campechanos (aka divorciados with both red and green salsa), the poppyseed salad (candied walnuts are so good), Enfrijolados, and the huevos rancheros. I've had some of the other items on the lunch menu, like the mexican burger and the steak panini, but I think the stars are definitely the brunch items. read more

Came here on a late afternoon. It was kinda empty. Overall the restaurant decor was modern art with dark walls just like any gentrified restaurant in the Pilsen area. The service was top notch! Our server, Astrid, I believe was her name, was very attentive and gave us recommendations with regards to food. Very cute, local Mexican/American brunch spot in Pilsen! Food(5/5): AMAZING!! I got the chilaquiles with regular red salsa and added a piece of 5 oz steak(extra $4). It came in a beautiful platter with queso fresco sprinkled on top with cilantro, perfectly seasoned beans, and two over easy eggs(you can ask them to cook it anyway you want). My friend got the huevos divorciados(divorced eggs ) which she absolutely loved! We both just had a great time with good food. Atmosphere(5/5): Definitely great ambiance, it is a very cute and homey feel with lights across the restaurant and Frida paintings. There was even an ofrenda wall. I went to eat breakfast on a Tuesday for the first time and I really liked it because it wasn't crowded. The food was so delicious, and the service was great! I'm not usually a breakfast person but I decided to try and come on a Sunday morning. I was able to get seated pretty quickly which was nice, and the staff were great! It was a really fun environment with Spanish music playing to get your energy up and feel awake. Friendly location. There's this cute ambiance that gives you the "homie" feeling. Fast service, great coffee and delicious brunch menu! My boyfriend and I ordered the steak and meat lovers skillet. I want to preface this review by saying that the review is based on my subjective opinion (as most reviews tend to be) based on my personal experience dining here. I had been told that their chilaquiles were good here and I do enjoy a good chilaquiles dish with spicy green/red sauce. The first time my husband and I tried coming here, it was packed and more than a 40 minute wait time so we decided to skip it. This weekend however, we finally made it in and the wait time was much shorter. For starters, this place is not the most kid-friendly. It is obvious that it is meant more for a social gathering rather than a family oriented place to bring kids to. Although they do not overtly claim to NOT be kid friendly, the lack of a kids menu is a tell-tale sign. I am not about to order a $15 breakfast item for my 5 year old which brings me to my next point. I am Mexican-American and I take issue with a place that tries to bank in on the appeal of a gentrifying neighborhood to sell absurdly inflated Mexican food under the guise of "trendiness" not only is it overpriced but the portions are small for what you are paying and quite honestly it wasn't all that great. I have tasted better at El Milagro and La Cathedral for a much more reasonable price and twice the amount of food than what you get here. Even my 8 yr old commented that for two orders of chilaquiles (NO DRINKS) and a side order of 2 small pancakes that came out to $33 without a tip was a lot. The chilaquiles are nothing but fried tortillas with a sauce it does not even come with meat (that is additional) and totally does not justify $13 for them with a tiny portion of beans. Sorry but just because you name your restaurant based on a famous Mexican artist and try to make it high couture and contemporaneous doesn't take away from the fact that it is grossly overpriced. This place is super cute and a joy to have a meal in. The menu is full of tempting selections at fair prices but some of the bites in my order didn't go over super well. My boyfriend ordered a steak sandwich and I ordered the steak and eggs. The steaks were kind of fleshy, sinewy and dry in both dishes. Beans, eggs and toast were thankfully on point and my large table of friends were enjoying their meals. Fries on the side of sandwiches were crispy and delicious and the service was good. We love exploring different mom and pop shops in Pilsen because we believe in supporting small businesses. Saw this place on Yelp, and despite the 3.5 ratings, decided to give it a try. It was a diverse crowd on a Saturday morning, and music low enough that you can hear each other talk. So far, I'm liking. The menu- I LOVED the Mexican/American twist. Story of my food life here!! I was able to get steak and eggs, picked refried beans as a side (potatoes were an option) and toast (tortillas and pancakes were an option). My tween son had a breakfast sandwich with ham, I ordered 2 eggs/ beans for the smaller one and a steak skillet for the Mr. All in all, I liked the variety of food options. Lunch specials were on the back, and items for kids had a red K next to it. The food- gotta admit, I was not too impressed with my plate. I ordered steak and eggs, but I got a slice of bistec- which is more for like tacos, and super thinly sliced. I was expecting a piece iok ribeye or something thicker. I was like, okay, I'm Latina, I got this. But then I took a bite and it was also cold. The place was somewhat busy, so I don't know how long my plate sat out. (Side note, I usually never send my plate back- I eat it outta fear something extra might be sent back out. Ha.) My toast was toasty alright, in fact, all of it was hard. My son liked his sandwich meal though (he said his sandwich was hot, the ham was not too sweet and the potatoes had great seasoning) and my daughter - well she's 5. She picks through whatever is in front of her. My husband had a piping hot steak skillet (although it was on a regular plate, not the traditional cast iron skillet). He enjoyed the traditional Mexican seasonings of his steak. The homemade sauces were HOT. Use sparingly if you aren't a chile kind of person. We all agreed the pancakes were yummy too. I was also bummed about their coffee. They use Starbucks, which I despise. I would have preferred supporting smaller businesses- maybe a local coffee shop or heck, Inteligentsia. All in all, I would be willing to try them out again for their lunch menu before opting for other places first. read more

This is going to be a short review. Why you say? Because this is just another awesome restaurant in the Pilsen area along 18th Street. This kind of restaurant is why other Mexican or Latin restaurants cannot not survive in the outlying area with the booming array of Pilsen food treasures. Frida's is an easy menu to choose from based on your taste(s). They have a few smoothies/juices to choose from as well that make for a perfect break from the typical orange juice breakfast montage. Plates are presented well and full of goodness. Quick and attentive service. Short hours so plan accordingly. This was our second visit here and no matter how many times I look at the menu, I go back to the breakfast options. Came into Pilsen Breakfast & Grill on Saturday afternoon for brunch. Unknowingly we arrived just moments before the Mexican Independence Day Parade was on their way through that block! Upon coming in we were greeted by a host and then immediately seated. It was a little after 12:00PM and we were a little surprised that there were only 2 other tables occupied aside from my boyfriend and I. We looked past that and we were looking forward to Brunch and an extra bonus of the Parade! It was our first visit and thought the timing was just perfect! Our waitress was really sweet. My boyfriend started off by ordering the Vanilla Iced Coffee which he loved - I tasted it and it was pretty good! I stuck with the water and one thing I should mention is that we were given cucumber water which was such a great touch! I loved it! My boyfriend ordered the Steak & Eggs with a side of Potatoes, I went with the Molletes Con Huevos. Since it wasn't busy we were fortunate to have not waited long for our order to come out. And while we waited we were able to catch the Parade coming through, it was perfect timing! The energy on the streets was such a great touch to our dining experience, Brunch & Entertainment - the perfect Saturday afternoon! Overall the food was good! My boyfriend really enjoyed his dish and it didn't take him long to finish. My plate was packed full of flavor! Normally I would have ordered an omelette and I'm pretty happy I stepped out of my norm! Everything tasted fresh and we were satisfied! I'm giving 3 stars only because Service was temporarily on hold while the parade was coming through. The atmosphere was as if they were closed. It was really hard getting any sort of attention: our water / coffee could've been refilled, could've used another napkin or two, and mid meal I would have loved a little attention. Parade or no parade, I still expect the same level of service on an average day. That being said, I definitely want to give this place another chance!
