Went there for Mother's Day this year. As expected, the wait was about an hour since we didn't reserve online (didn't even think this place was on Open Table!). I ordered the birria chilaquiles which were just ok, the meat was a bit on the bland side, which is the opposite of what a good birria should be. When I asked our waitress if I could have cheese on mine (as it doesn't come with cheese or eggs for that matter) she said that they couldn't make that adjustment because they were too busy & the kitchen didn't like to have any changes to a plate (REALLY???? they know 365 beforehand that Mother's Day will be busy, so they should be prepared for the high volume of customers) I didn't insist and added eggs to my order (be prepared to pay $4.00 extra for two eggs). What I found funny was my beans came with cheese...really, they couldn't have just tossed some over my chilaquiles!‍. My sister liked her poblano chilaquiles, which were good and mom had mole enchiladas, which she enjoyed. But the overall star of the meal were the strawberry pancakes we got for dessert! They were absolutely delicious! They came with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and a side of strawberry sauce (more of a coulis sauce) that tasted homemade. We didn't even ask for syrup, that's how good they were (reminded us of true Mexican pancakes...IYKYK). In spite of the businesses of the day, our waitress was attentive and nice. I'll go back, but will try something else and definitely get the pancakes for dessert! Another note to be aware of, they don't have a waiting area, so if someone in your party can't stand for long periods, like my mom, take that into consideration before going on a busy day (like Mother's Day). When we did ask, the guy taking down the reservations said "you can wait in the car" with a bit of nastiness and smirk...unnecessary attitude. He might have not meant it that way since they do text when your reservation is ready, but he needs to work on sounding like an a-hole and could have said "I'm soo sorry we do not, but please feel free to wait in your car since we will text when your reservation is ready" in a compassionate tone, or something to that extent. I had been wanting to go to La Catedral Cafe for a while after seeing influencers post about it and it honestly lived up to everything I expected. I was really curious if the owners or chef are from Jalisco because they use the word birote instead of bolillo which instantly felt familiar to me in a nostalgic way. The mole was so good, it tasted like a mole dulce my momma makes but with a little hint of spice which I never thought of eating it this way but it worked so well. I usually don't like Mexican red rice at restaurants because it's often bland but theirs was actually really flavorful and I really enjoyed it. I knew my chilaquiles came with chicken but I added a side of cecina and that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal because it was so good and I left completely stuffed. I really want to go back to try their sweet breakfast items because everything looked amazing but I was too full this time. The inside is also so beautiful and decorated really thoughtfully and I loved seeing all the corazones sagrados everywhere which was my favorite detail and the ceiling painting was stunning. The chilaquiles were nice and crispy, the rojos salsa was a little vinegary, but still enjoyable. I would want to try another sauce next time, less spicy for sure. Me and my husband have been coming to La Catedral Cafe and Restaurant for quite some time. We heard about it through word of mouth. They don't take reservations and are always packed. However, they have the waitlist app and it's highly recommended to put your name down to avoid waiting outside. There is a private parking lot for the restaurant around the corner. Make sure to let the lady know you are eating at La Catedral and show her your receipt on the way out. If its your first time, the decor/ ambiance have more of a religious theme that seems quite authentic to the culture. Its quite decorated and colorful inside. The waitstaff are always so nice and helpful with recommendations. It's also a family friendly restaurant where kids are welcome. They have hands down the best chilaquiles in the city. We have tried so many of the different sauces and usually do half and half of the diabla and chilaquiles rojos. My husband always orders the cafe de olla, which is a traditional coffee - really good with cinnamon spice flavors. He sometimes finds it a little on the sweater side so they do 1/2 regular coffee mixed with the cafe de olla. I always get a fresh juice, the exotica is my favorite. Finally to end, we always split the arroz con leech y fresas (rice pudding and strawberry crepes).
