Just finished an oil change and a headlamp replacement* for my sedan... they finished it in just under an hour (on a Saturday no less), and the price was exceptional. This is especially compared to what the dealers charged and how long it took (why do I need to leave my car for almost an entire day for an oil change?! Its how much?... oil doesn't cost that much??), not to mention the extra services they tried to push on you. Friendly Auto is all about the work you need, and that's it. One thing I noticed is that there is a bit of a language barrier. I've worked for different companies, some of them Asian and the feel of working with Friendly Auto is about to same (they speak Mandarin, I don't, and their English is a little bit off/broken)... so your mileage may vary (you may also groan now). I came in to get a potential issue with my car checked. I arrived around 1:30 PM and they were busy enough that I had to wait about 30 minutes before they could look at my car. It turns out that everything was fine, so then I just had my car oil changed, since it was due for one anyway. I was pleasantly surprised at how relatively cheap it cost to get an oil change here, as opposed to other places I've been. That took about 40-45 minutes, and I just alternated between reading a book and observing the fish and frog swimming in the small fish tank in the corner of their little office room. While I was sitting in the office reading and fish-watching, I saw other people come and go. A couple people came in around 2:15ish and asked to get their car checked, but had to be turned away because the shop was already full and booked for the rest of the day. I can't confidently give them 5 stars because I came for such a small service, but it's also because when I first showed up, I wasn't sure who to go and show my car to. I just saw a bunch of dudes congregating together in one section of the lot, and no one came over to talk to me as I walked up to the shop. Short summary: My son's 2017 Subaru Forrester had a minor accident. Subaru dealer on Stevens Creek charged us 2100 dollars to fix it. But afterwards the car showed strange noise when turning all the way left. Sent the car back to dealer 3 times, they didn't fix it. Last time, they told us a bogus problem, and demanded another 475 dollars to fix it. We brought the car to Friendly, Austin is an expert on Subaru cars (he's probably experts on other cars too :-), he identified the problem for us. We brought the evidence back to the Subaru dealer, at the end of the day, they admitted they made a mistake, and they fixed the problem identified by Austin. Thank you, Austin. Shame on you, Subaru dealer on Stevens Creek! Detailed story: In March 2017, my son back up his car in a packed garage, and the left front wheel hit the concrete column which he didn't see. Went to the Subaru dealer, they said everything has to change -- not just the the Outer Tie Rod End (it's crooked), but also the Power steering rack. To avoid increase premium, we were considering not claim the insurance, but this high price tag caused us to think twice. The service manager Jon kept on warning us the electronics of the modern SUV is very complex, it's risky to ask non-dealer to fix it, so eventually we decided to have them fix it and pay the bill of $2100 out of our own pocket. The main part Power steering rack was out of stock, my son drove the loaner for about a month before the parts arrived, and they installed it. After another week I asked my son is everything ok? he said everything is fine except when turning all the way to the left, the wheel produced a weird scraping sound. I said "Send it to the dealer and ask them to fix it". Then we forgot about it. In late June, we asked my son again (he's working in another town so we don't see him too often). He said he sent it to them twice, left the car overnight both time, and the car came back exactly the same! I was very surprised. So I asked him to send it to them the third time, and we went there as well. This time, again, the service manager came back and said nothing was wrong, and the car "function normally". And they absolutely ran out of any loaner car. He sent the information through text, and I returned some not-so-nice replies, and he got very upset. The next morning, they claimed they found the true cause -- the left wheel bearing is also broken/damaged, we just need to pay another $475 and they can definitely repair it for sure. I was suspicious of this statement. That was on Friday, my wife and I discussed overnight, and decided to send the car to another repair shop to take a look. The next day is Saturday, the busiest day of any repair garage. We went to the Subaru dealership, gave them an excuse that we need to use the car for the weekend. Then we brought the car to Friendly, it's fortunate that Austin had some time for us, he drove around in a large parking lot to identify the problem. and then he proved it by pinpoint the exact problem. The Power Steering Rack is a very tricky device to install, that it's likely to be installed not at the center location. And because it's not centered, the left front wheel doesn't have enough clearance, and when turning all the way left, the back of the wheel will scrape the left control arm, thus making the noise!!! We were so happy, I insisted paying Austin diagnosis fee. We took several pictures while the car was lifted, and I retrieve from my cell phone the original pictures of the car's power steering rack & Tie Rod End before Subaru "fixed" it. And on Sunday our son sent a detailed email to the service manager Jon and copied his boss Ron. On Monday, me and my wife went to see Subaru Jon. My son was nice to them all the time, his parents won't, unfortunately (for them). Jon again refused to believe what we found, and we soon started shouting, and he said he can't talk with us any more, so he let us talk to his boss Ron. I showed the pictures to Ron and explained what we (Austin & I) found. He immediately said that it's possible the power steering rack is installed not-centered, and they would confirm it when one of the platforms free-up, and he immediately arranged us a loaner car (actually their company car, because they did run out of loaner). That late afternoon, The Subura Jon called my son, saying that our diagnosis was correct, and the problem is fixed, and he can pick up the car the next day. He did, and confirm the noise was gone! The money is not a major concern for us. But the wasted time, and the way we endured the lies, that's an incredible experience for us. Thank you Friendly. I visited the store just to replace light bulb. When I called them for a quote, they asked for $8. When I visited them in person (a single female), the manager asked for $10. Since there are quite a few auto repair shops in the neighborhood, I told him those neighbors are charging for only $8, then the manager immediately agreed with $8. Took a trip to Lake Tahoe in my Toyota Corolla when i Arrived there I notice a grinding noise when i came to a complete stop my brakes were brand new didn't know why this was happening so when i came back to San Jose took my car to Austin he immediately knew what was wrong and fixed it immediately with out telling me lies and telling me that i didn't need to replace them. I've dropped in so many times to do an oil change and they'll help me get it done. $20 for an oil change and they do it fast. Then they check your fluid levels and inflate your tires. If they can't get it done they will refer you to a place they recommend. read more
