The place is plain and cluttered free. Came to get my boyfriend's dress pants hemmed. 3 in total. The elderly man was kind and listened. I already had the pants marked, so no try-ons was needed. The tailor immediately knew what to do. Quoted me a reasonable price and to be back by the end of the week. I was in no rush. Came to pick up several days later. It looks really nice and sturdy. My boyfriend tried all 3 pants and was super happy. We will be back for other items down the road. Love helping to support small businesses, such as this one. I came here today to have several items taken in. As soon as he saw me walk in with my big bag he told me I had too much. He then prompted me to go through my items and select a few items only. He kept asking me how many items while I was still sorting. Once I was finally done, he told me that he cannot take them in today. I told him that I did not need them done today. He told me he was too busy back next week. I told him that I needed these done for my upcoming vacation. He went back and forth with me about why he could not and to come back some other day. I don't understand why he sat there and made me go to my items and wasted 15 minutes of my time if he wasn't going to accept ANYTHING (he would not even let me try on one item). ***UPDATE*** 7/12/21 ***TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!*** I spoke to the man who I had ask to alter my dress. I told him I did not ask for it to be cut/hemmed and he told me "no" I had. He recounted the conversation; saying I tried on the dress & he pinned it, which I agreed happened. I explained that I only wanted the slits closed and he argued with me. I asked him for my money back for the alterations and the cost of the dress which he ruined, both of which he refused. I told him I'd be taking him to court then. I still had another dress that he altered to try on and pick up, which was done correctly. I confirmed it was $25 for the second dress and he refused to let me pay him. He told me to just take it and go and that he wouldn't do work for me again. Like I'd ever go back... ***Original *** 7/10/21 I am so LIVID! I took a brand new dress here to be altered and it was ruined! I asked for the slits on either side of the dress to be swen up to a certain point and the man there marked that point. I picked it up a few minutes before they closed so I didn't try it on there but as soon as I got home I did. THEY HEMMED THE DRESS. It was a maxi dress before and now it's too short. They must have cut off more than 15 inches! It was hemmed to the point where I asked the slits to swen up to AND IT STILL HAD SLITS. The man there barely spoke English, I should have known better I guess. This dress is out of stock so I can't even replace it if I wanted to! A hidden gem! This place is is super easy to drive/walk by without even noticing, the store front looks like an old house that's been gutted out. It's a single room and I was little skeptical the 1st time I showed up. The power of Yelp was my only influence to go here and I was not disappointed. Upon arriving, I was greeted by a man who was right to the point of business. I came to get a suit tailored and without much discussion he knew what to do. I tried on my suit and he took out a few measurements. I had both my jacket and slacks tailored and I was in and out within 5 minutes. He's cash only and his turnaround is quick. I took my suit in on a Wednesday and had it back by Friday morning. When I returned to pick up the suit, I tried it on and all he said to me was "better than the original" and he wasn't wrong. Don't let this hole in the wall deter you to go to another place. His prices are cheap and after taking a few more items to him, I can say that the work is solid. I needed to get my pants hemmed because they were too long and stumbled upon this place! I had 2 pants that I brought and they were ready within a couple day for $15 each. I was satisfied with how they turned out. The only thing I would say was that when I tried on my pants there was only a small panel I stood behind and it was still a little see through. Like the other reviews said it's cash only and there's a language barrier, but the man who runs the place is kind and was able to give me my pants when he was getting ready to close. Really terrible customer service. Walked to this place before work because I needed measurements taken. I made sure to wait until after 10am, when it's scheduled to be open. When I arrived, it was closed but there was a sign at the door saying someone would be back. When I got home I called the number and the owner answered saying he was there, and he could take my measurements. When I tried to clarify, he hung up. I walked back to the place, and he told me he couldn't take my measurements. I told him we'd spoken on the phone, and he said my sweater was too big to measure over. I told him I had on a sports bra and brought a tight shirt. He still refused to take my measurements. Complete waste of my time. read more

Just received my items back, and I am very impressed. As other reviews have noted, this is cash-only, but the prices are very reasonable and the quality of the work is well worth it. There is also a but of a language barrier, but with patience I was able to explain everything I wanted. I asked him to do three things: First, repair a pretty substantial tear/rip on the bottom portion/seat area of a pair of suit pants. The repair was excellent; he applied a patch on the inside and really made sure the stitching was tight and covered the holes/rips. Seems to be very sturdy and durable. Second, bring in the pant legs on a different pair of suit pants for a slimmer profile around my legs. The stitch work is top-notch; I can't even tell the difference between the before and after. The pants fit extremely well and they look exactly as I envisioned them. Lastly, I asked him to shorten the bottom hem of a suit jacket. Previously, the hem extended beyond my middle finger when both arms were at my side. I asked him to shorten it several inches in order to line up with my thumb knuckle. I've been to several tailors before and all either declined to do this, or were prohibitively expensive. Here, however, he didn't hesitate when I asked him. When I came to pick up the jacket, he insisted I try it on, and I was shocked at how much better the jacket looked. The stitch work was impeccable, and there is not a single sign of alteration. For the three items above, I paid $90 flat. I am very happy with the service, and I will be back for all future tailoring needs. read more

Turnaround time at this place is lightning fast and service is excellent! They're a small mom and pop shop and they speak limited English, but this small Asian business is one of the best tailors you can find downtown! I needed to alter a wool coat and take in the sleeves, after a quick assessment and explanation, the owner quoted me $30 for this service. They take cash only and you need to pay up-front. The owner handed me a slip with the pickup date and I was on my way. After 3 days, I came to pick up my coat - the alternation was literally unnoticeable on the delicate wool and I couldn't have been happier with the work done! I was so excited I didn't even take any pictures, but I will say - if it weren't for my trip to Friendship Tailor & Alteration, that coat would not have been worn nearly as much as it had been last winter! I've come back a few times for dress alterations and more - this place is a petite woman's best friend. Due to my mother's genetics, I have a fat ass. I mean, like not wide and large, just really voluminous. My waste is a 29. but my ass bounces up and down when I walk. While this trait may be good for sitting on public transportation, it is a nightmare when wearing pants. I have ripped so many pants up the ass-crack that it is embarrassing. Every suit I have owned has been lost to a huge rip right up the middle seam in the ass (often at inopportune times, like in court) This rip up the crack is a alterationist's worst nightmare. I have brought my ass-ripped pants to countless places before, all across the country, and they either just put a huge patch and sew it up or tell me that they can't do it. The patch technique invariably causes another tear in a few months. Oh and they also charge upwards of $30 to do it. Enter Friendship Tailor. You walk in and it feels like you are in a sewing shop in some third-world country. However, there is an air of credibility in what you see. Ancient machines that are absent in other alteration shops. Hundreds of different types of string. Neatly folded clothes all along a shelf. I abashedly show him my ass ripped jeans. He said "I will do my best, come back at two, it will be $10 bucks." I heard everything he said, but I was shocked by it all and had him repeat it. 2PM? that was only 2 hours away! $10 bucks? I was bracing myself for like $30! I came back at two and sure enough my pants were fixed, but not in the way I expected-- he used this awesome technique that curved the hole-- i dont even know, but I showed my co-worker and she couldn't believe it! Oh and he fixed my pant leg hem, free of charge! If my cheap ass tipped him $5 you know this place is good. One of my highest yelp reviews to date! read more

I truly wanted to have a good experience here because it's a small family business, but unfortunately I will have to spend more money somewhere else to fix the shirts they ruined. I took a total of 5 items. They charge 15 dollars per item. I thought it was odd to charge a flat fee for everything since some alterations are quicker than others, but it's still cheap so I gave it a go. The hem on a pair of jeans and a skirt were fine. However they shortened the shoulder straps on two tank tops in a way that I could have done better myself. The third one came out okay, but still looks like it was rushed. The shirts were covered in thread which could have been cleaned off easily. I am glad I did not trust them with more complicated items since they could not properly do a simple hem. Although this guy may have been here for several years, I found his pricing to be ridiculous. I had gone to 3 other places prior to get an idea on what it would cost to get the work I needed done on my jacket. The other places quoted (which I found on yelp and had decent reviews) quoted me anywhere from $28- $35. I read the reviews about this place and decided to stop in to see what he would charge and was shocked that he wanted to charge me $50 to hem my jacket. $50??? Yeah.... NO. He charged $45, seemed a fair price, and told me to pick it up in two days. The pants came out perfectly and I'm totally pleased. Worse tailor & alteration ever! I took a custom embroidered jacket to have the sleeves shorten and sides tightened. The man barely spoke English but he said he understood what I wanted and charged $50 cash. The sleeves collar had custom embroidery on it and I told him I didn't want the embroidery collar to be altered. Just shorten but leave it the way it was made. I emphasized that it was a traditional handcrafted embroidery and very important to me. When I went to pick it up a week later, the embroidery was cut in half and sewn inside of the sleeves. I'm so pissed off because the jacket was custom made and costs $250. His response was now the plain black sleeves match the rest of jacket. He destroyed my jacket. I should've heeded the bad reviews. Hopefully this will help others that are thinking about going there from making the mistake I did. read more

I brought a couple blazers to him and while I wasn't sure if they all fit correctly, he was honest and informed me which ones DIDNT need tailoring. I appreciate that he didn't try to tailor items that didn't need it. For 2 of them, he shortened the sleeves. For 1, he was able to lengthen it by a bit! :) read more

He seemed indifferent to my situation and barely even spoke, just nods and I barely felt acknowledged. (Probably jacket zipper replacement too much nuisance for this guy?) Geez. Mr. Yee's craftsmanship and attention to details speaks for itself. I brought in a tux to be altered (pants hemmed: $10, jacket sides brought in: $55, sleeves slimmed a bit: $30) Tues and it was ready by Sat (non rush). The tux now fits perfectly and you can't tell that it was altered. The store is a hole-in-a-wall, but most hidden gems usually are. The interior is just a large single room with clothes folded on shelves and a three panel fold-away screen acts as a changing room. The inside is sparse and looks almost frozen in time with the antique sewing machines lining the wall. Don't expect perfect lighting or a fresh coat of paint. This is very no frills. It reminds me of the mom and pop shops in Oakland/SF Chinatown I frequented as a kid. There's plenty of free street parking (15 min parking on his side of the street, 1 hr parking on the opposite side). As other reviewers have mentioned, Mr. Yee is a wonderful, very polite, soft spoken man. He does know some English, so basic alterations shouldn't be an issue. But I can see how communication/language barrier can be an issue for more complex adjustments. He does speak Cantonese if you're able to. Glad to see that Mr. Yee is healthy again and able to share his wonderful talent with the rest of us. His prices are a bargain for the quality of work. I agree with Kerri T. The exterior and interior aren't aesthetically pleasing but the work done here is quality. I wanted so badly to take a broom and a couple coats of paint to the place! I came here with a suit to be let out, a wedding dress to be taken in and two pairs of slacks to be shortened. He told me what he was going to do to the dress and even declined to work on my boyfriend's suit pants, claiming that they were already the perfect length with his dress shoes. Glad to know that he's honest and didn't take on the pants just to make a few extra bucks. He also mentioned that he would try his best to lengthen the sleeves on the suit jacket as much as he could. The tailor that my bf had first taken the suit to completely botched it up. Quarter-length sleeves are not attractive on a suit! We took in everything on Friday and it was all ready Monday morning. Hems shortened (2), 1 dress taken in perfectly and the suit jacket let out as much as possible. The cost was $44 for the work and he only takes cash.
