My experience. Walked in and there were maybe 10-15 people inside, with 3 people ahead of me in line. My guess was I'd be out of there in 10 minutes, at most, for a take out order. Well, it took 10 minutes to order and then another 15 minutes to get food. That's 25 minutes, way too long. 0 Stars Ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Fairly pricey - $9, but nothing I'm going to complain about, even though the sandwich was tiny. No sides, no fries, nothing. Only other place in town that serves Sandwiches without a side is Sava's. Their sandwiches are larger, cheaper and better. Sandwich was ok, nothing special, looked sloppy so not very aesthetically appealing. I wanted to try a colada - cuban espresso - but they had some funky recipe for it... ITS SUGAR AND ESPRESSO, nothing else... 2 stars. Place looks like an operating room, not the feel I like. Plus, if you're going for a cuban themed place, this couldn't be further from something authentic - this is not Cuban food. Cuban cafeteria's are kind of grimy, with a lot of personality and character, (I'm talking Miami, Cafe Habana in NYC, etc... and those places have lines out the door) Fritas is nothing like that. I'm not saying I want the place to look dirty, but the white is just awful and unfriendly. 1 Star. Setup/Service - Like a bottleneck. Maybe this is why it took me 25 minutes to get in and out. You walk in, find the back of the line (only 3 ahead of me) and wait. Server could not describe food but he managed to ask me 10 questions in the process of ordering. 2 stars. This little gem of a restaurant is owned by Eve Aronoff whose previous venture was the restaurant in her namesake - and Ann Arbor's finest dining establishment! Being members of a gourmet couples' dining group, we routinely frequented upscale restaurants in Ann Arbor and the greater Detroit area. All of us unanimously agreed that "Eve" was the best dining experience they've had. Now Eve (the chef) has brought her brilliant culinary skills to "Frita Batidos" serving Cuban-inspired food. The atmosphere is very casual and friendly with picnic tables instead of formal dining settings. The food on the other hand is nothing short of 5-stars: pulled pork sandwiches, the fish frita, and the inspired Cuban - among others - are all outstanding. The plantains here are some of the best we've ever had (personal favorite: twice fried with chili mayo sauce on the side). Don't forget to try their desserts: the churros (a type of fried pastry rolled in cinnamon sugar) are a great way to end a wonderful meal. They don't take reservations and it's often crowded (especially on weekends), but the wait is worth it. Being in the food business for 20 years in New York City this was one of the least technically executed meals I've had in my life and that's being polite. $50 for two sandwiches two beers a side of fries and a kiddie ham and cheese are NYC prices. But that being said those are excellent sandwiches this was far from that. Was charged $1 each to add lettuce tomato and onion ($6 total for two sandwiches) which I did not receive. The fries where so greasy I actually could pick them up and squeeze the oil out of them. One sandwich I ordered was the fish sandwich I asked what kind of fish it was she said whitefish from the Great Lakes I was happy to hear only to be disappointed to some type of unidentifiable fish cake that was about 90% bread crumb with zero fish. I had to go home a take pepto I had such bad heartburn. I was expecting high quality and a technically well balanced meal with all the credentials this chef/owner boast about as well priding herself as a Cordon Bleu grad. I guess she just has a great PR team. Please do yourself a favor if you read your Yelp reviews. Get back in the kitchen and over see the food you are sending out. I give Frita Batino's five stars based on their Bandito milkshakes. I like to get a combo lime and coconut...the chocolate is awesome! Not to sweet. My son likes the lighter batido which is mango and pineapple but he likes the normal amount of ice cream which makes it a heavy Lighter batido. The ginger lime juice drink is great for those who like ginger. The ginger's so fresh, it will bite you back. I've come back several times for the best snack which is cilantro-lime salsa on coco mnut-ginger rice and melted muenster on top.(I like it without the beans.) the fried plantains, whether loaded or plain are to die for. The atmosphere is earthy, new yorky(but with more space). Simple white painted brick. Clean and fresh. It's a nice place to get a relatively healthy snack with some indulgent side dishes and entrees. The bathroom doors are slightly more noticeable than the secret doors that you have to pull on the fake book or candle stick lever to open. Thankfully, there is a letter "B" on the door(the first word that came to mind was not bathroom but a word that I hope my children don't know yet) and Braille to the right of the doorway. read more

Thanks for trying something different. This place is the opposite of cookie-cutter, it strives to look and feel and taste different and by in large it succeeds. I was not always the biggest fan of Eve, so I came into the experience unsure how I would like it, in the end it won me over. From the moment you walk in you know it is a little bit different, the stark whitewash look is momentarily unsettling but when you get used to the surroundings it is really quite nice. Think of it as a roadside cafe somewhere in South America. I loved the little juices served in plastic bags, and the casual service style. It is a little on the pricey side for what you get, but it's worth it since there is nothing quite like it anywhere. Ann Arbor fancies itself a "foodie town", and that isn't something I always agree with, but places like Frita Batidos is certainly a step in the right direction... thanks for having the courage to try something different. read more

This is the perfect place to go when you're craving some reallllyyyy greasy burgers. Last time I came here I got a beef frita with all the toppings ("make it loco"). It was very hard to find seating especially with the group of 6 friends I came with. The seating is mostly just picnic tables and benches which are first come first serve. The tables aren't cleaned often either which means you could end up with a sticky/messy eating surface. That set aside, I really enjoyed the food. You have to eat it with a knife and fork, unless you're okay with making a huge mess. The frita was really delicious but because each element of the burger was greasy (the fries, the sunny side up egg, etc) I couldn't help but feel really heavy and weighted down after eating it. Overall, would recommend only if you're REALLY craving greasy food. read more

Something different in a world that seems to blend the same!!!!! You know it has to be good when you go on a Monday evening and there's a line out the door and the tables are filled. Inside seating is many picnic tables put end to end and you sit in where you can fit in. There are different board games and card games you can play. But before you even sit down, you have to order. Lots to choose from and you really can't go wrong with anything. We had a big party so we basically got everything on the menu. Personally I got the chorizo with a fried egg on top. Holyyyyyyy WOW it was good. Flavor, some spice and culture. Also got the HUGEEEEE churros and the fried sweet bananas. Both were a big hit. Personally got the banana shake and it was crazyyyyy good. The Cuban sandwich was a wonderful blend of meats with the perfect amount of saltiness to compliment its flavor from the chunks of pickles inside... From the street view i thought it looked a little too plain but as soon as you get closer there's a unique beauty to that plainness that's further complimented by the Cuban music...feels like you just walked into a local Cuban place in Miami.. As soon as I took a bite of that Cuban tastiness I Tony Montana'd (Scarface Movie) my emotions, shouting " HOW'JU LIKEE DAT!?!? EH!?" :) mmmmmm tasteyyyy I can see this place becoming a hot spot during the warmer seasons too because of the snack bar. Liquor license should be legal there soon! This place has plenty of great options for sandwiches. I have had the inspired cuban about 5 times and won't get anything else. Nothing can be this good. Nothing. The fries are pretty good too, although they tend to be a bit soggy. The place is also super clean and inviting. I hate going to dirty restaurants, so it's nice to dine in a place where the workers care enough to keep the place spotless. The one downside is the wait. You seriously wait, and wait, and wait for a sandwich, that although is amazing, shouldn't take 20 minutes. But it does, every time. Even at times when there are 3 people in the restaurant. I would reccomend Frita Batidos to anyone around who wants to eat good Cuban inspired food that isn't on a time cruch! read more

the only reason this is getting even 3 stars is because the food and drinks are really that good. however, every other aspect of the the restaurant could use some major improvement. I went here with some friends the other night and after getting on line at 7 pm, we finally placed our order for food at 8 pm. We waited on line in the air condition-less restaurant for an hour! Sometimes going 20 minutes without moving at all. Sweaty and cranky we then placed our order with an incredibly rude worker, he rolled his eyes at us, and was putting away straws and boxes instead of waiting on us - making the wait even more frustrating. None of the workers were friendly and smiles were scarce, which is a shame considering how good the food is. read more

You get what you pay for. Even in Ann Arbor. If you're someone interested in a burger and a shake that is out of the ordinary, this is the place for you. Frita Batidos is up front about its mission: locally sourced products deployed in riffs on simple Cuban classics. I'm addicted to the fish frita and the chocolate batido. With this much taste and caloric oomph, you don't need to supersize anything. If you want mediocre gluttony there are plenty of places delivering more of less. Frita Batidos is not diet food although the restaurant does provide a menu guide for the sort of skittish eater you expect to find in Ann Arbor. Frita Batidos is my favorite spot for dinner when I'm visiting Ann Arbor. The food is delicious, and the black bean burger is a favorite with my son. Last night, after my sister and I had dinner, I mentioned to the friendly waitperson Laura D. that I'd love to take something back for my son and she offered to mail him a treat! I really enjoyed the food and experience at Frita Batidos. I ordered a chicken frita with cilantro lime salsa along with a lemonade. The lemonade came out first in a plastic bag, which was unique but tasted refreshing. The chicken frita was served with shoestring fries and was phenomenal. I really liked the special sauce they put on the chicken patty. Even though I wasn't super hungry, I finished it all. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone for a quick and easy lunch! read more

I live just down the road from Frias and it has very quickly become my go-to lunch place. From the food, the staff, to the overall dining experience, Fritas is one of the places in Ann Arbor that does it right. They have managed to blend American and Cuban cuisine delightfully to create a must-have burger, fries, and shake experience. It is a little on the pricey side, but for a college town, it is still fairly reasonable. Great place to go after a long week of work or classes. read more

Good food but way out of touch with the city they are in. If you want your local community to support you as a business don't sell food for so much money. Due to contrary belief not everyone in Ann Arbor is a professor or dr., it's embarrassing that my income is low but to have a bill for over $20 to have a sandwich and fries is embarrassing. Within a pool of cosmo wannabe eateries scattered throughout town, Frita stands out as the real deal. The food? Frida Batidos in Ann Arbor is a must-visit! We ordered the chorizo frita and went loco, adding everything--it was bursting with flavor! The coconut cream chocolate espanol batido, with a splash of dark rum, was creamy and delicious. We also tried the Best Snack Ever and crisped plantains, which were both fantastic.
