Fritai was definitely a great experience. The food was SO GOOD. Everything was full of flavor. The music was very good. The service was pretty good, but could've been a little bit faster. My favorite dish was the coconut, lime plantain appetizer with the avocado sauce. The flavors were literally perfect and the plantains were crispy yet soft on the inside. I really enjoyed the old fashion The mac & cheese with crab was very good. But I would say that the passionfruit bbq wings were better! lastly, for dessert, the passion fruit crème brûlée was very strong in the passion fruit flavor. It is not your traditional crème brûlée, but it is good. if you really like passionfruit definitely get it but if you aren't that big on passion fruit then I would pass because the flavor is strong. All in all , my cousin, and I had a very good experience here - I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu! It's definitely a vibe here. I want to love Fritai because it's clean & a nice ambiance, I dig the location (within walking distance to Armstrong Park & Mahalia Jackson Theatre) & I liked the friendly staff. But the food didn't live up to the above. My husband ordered an IPA & they were out of it. Slight let down to start. We ordered two of the entree plates & shared each. First was the crab mac & cheese, with the add-on option of wings to make the dish more of a meal. I didn't see or taste any chunks or even bits of crab in the mac. Such a let down, as we were really excited about this dish. The chicken wings were so small, they were forgettable. The second entree we opted for was the chicken with Haitian greens, rice, & tostones. The best part of this dish, hands down, were the greens. I could eat a big bowl of those greens with a scoop of brown rice & call it dinner. But the chicken was so, so dry. The skin was that crisp, dry texture when you know it has been sitting...bummer. The tostones were ok (sweet plantains are an upcharge substitution) & white rice is hard to mess up. I'm just not sure we'd return after several disappointments. read more

I really, really wanted to like Fritai because I've enjoyed Haitian food before but this experience was lacking. We had an early reservation before an event so there were maybe two other tables with people in the whole restaurant. We were seated, given a bottle of water for the table and told to scan the QR code and someone would be right with us. Right with us translated to us being ignored for over 10 minutes while the lady who ended up being our server sat at a table near us rolling silverware. We could barely get a recommendation out of her. We ended up getting the ti punch set up, creole hot wings, and I got the legim epina initially with oxtails until I was later told that wouldn't be ready in time. The bartender was super friendly and showed us how to make the cocktails and I think the set up is a fun idea. The chicken wings came out and I was expecting creole hot sauce to bring the heat but it was pretty tame but the wings were overall good. My main dish was pretty disappointing however. The creole chicken had absolutely no flavor. It tasted like diced tomatoes dumped on top of unseasoned chicken. The rice was completely unseasoned. The only redeeming thing on the plate was the smothered greens with mirliton. Those had good flavor and tasted like they had cooked down all day. Our server was pretty quick to drop off the check while we were still eating but it took her about 10-15 minutes to realize that the card was ready once we finished. I think if the service has been better I'd go back for chicken wings, ti punch and some greens, but this experience has pretty much put me off from coming back. read more

I sat at the bar and had great conversation with Chasity the bartender while I sipped on my kremas and waited on my Fritai platter. The pikliz wasn't spicy but had good ( acid) flavor! Cuz the food is simply DELICIOUS! This restaurant feels like family. Very simple decor and layout, but the food...5 stars isn't enough. I started with the Corn Ribs, which is honestly such a good idea to cut them that way because it made eating, and absorbing whatever that amazing sauce was, that much easier. I wish I knew what herb was on the corn.... Then I got the Whole fish, which was the freshest trout I think I've ever tasted. The fish had bones (which doesn't bother me) and was packed with some type of delicious green herb butter. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked! The tomato based sauce was a great accompaniment to the fish. I honestly couldn't tell you much about the rice and peas because the fish was just that good. What was once the best food hall stall in New Orleans has finally grown into a full-fledged restaurant. I'm a bit peeved that Yelp carried the old reviews (including mine) over, because it's not the same business. It's better. The space they've found may look close to the French Quarter, but it's a long couple of blocks (especially after dark). It's a very different vibe, and while St Roch is nice, the atmosphere here-with Haitian rap playing and masks decorating the walls of a restored historic building-is something else. The signature item, a sandwich made of large fried plantains instead of bread, has not changed. It remains an intoxicating mix of flavors, with the plantains salted, the pickled relish sweet and sour, and the tofu at the center savory. If you're looking for vegetarian/vegan food, a Haitian restaurant is probably not your go-to, but there are plenty of clearly labeled options here. For that matter, even my non-alcoholic beverage wasn't ignored by the bar, and my mango tea arrived with several slices of fresh mango. A NOLA MUST! This place was amazing! Came during the week for an early dinner, and we were seated immediately. We had a reservation but probably could've got a table without one. For appetizers we had the fritay platter and coconut plantain which were good. Only thing I wish the Akra was bigger. For entrees I had the shrimp and my friend had the goat, we both loved our meals. They played mixed West-Indian music. Growing up Haitian I know authentic Haitian food when I taste it and this was it! Definitely would go back the next time I'm in town. Ive never been to a Haitian specific restaurant before, but this was a great introduction! Interior wise it feels like a cross between any other new orleans home, but with specific Haitian art and artifacts scattered about. The music is Caribbean in style and gets you in a party mood. The canaval cocktail is fantastic! Creamy, tangy, with a lovely low toned herbal element from the pea flower. Reminds me of blue moon ice cream but with tropical leanings. If you like creamy sweet drinks, this is it! The shrimp pikliz was not what I expected, but I did enjoy it! Its served cold when I thought it would be hot. They claim the shrimp is grilled, but most of my shrimp appeared as if there was no grilling or pan frying. There was one shrimp that was quite charred and somewhat dry. Makes me wonder if the kitchen messed up and just had to throw in regular cooked shrimp as a backup? The pikliz reminded me of a mix of coleslaw and giardierna. It was overall a refreshing dish. I subbed the green plantains with sweet plantains and Im glad I did. The sweet plantains here are comparable to any cuban place serving maduros. The wings are good, but they aren't anything special. even with the passion fruit bbq sauce, it didn't feel like I was having anything different than other chicken wings. What I will say is their wings are juicy, with a decent chicken taste and the skin isn't rubbery (but not crispy either). The sauce was ok but it doesn't pack as much of a flavor punch as I had hoped. I should have gone for the garlic or mango habanero, but Ive never heard passionfruit bbq sauce before. The collard greens were ok, but they weren't anything that I would go out of my way for. I wonder if getting ox tail would have made a difference but I doubt it. I think the lack of any meat broth in its flavor is what I wanted, but did not get. I don't think this was bad, but it could have been better. read more

First time at Fri Tai and it was amazing! We wanted to try a little bit of everything, and I'm so glad we did. We started with the plantain chips and avocado dip which was amazing! They fry the plantains very lightly and the avocado dip is so yummy that the two pair together perfectly. Next, we put in cocktail orders. Every single one I ordered had unique combinations, but tasted so great together. My favorite is the Basilica which is one of the tequila cocktails on the menu! Be careful, you can't taste the tequila. So good! The Old Haitian is my second favorite. PS- happy hour is half priced cocktails and appetizers. Next up, we ordered alllll the wings. We all agreed that the Passionfruit BBQ was the best decision we made that night. While the Creole Hot and Spicy Mango wings are yummy, the Passionfruit BBQ is so flavorful and tasty that we all wished we ordered more. The macaroni au gratin is delicious, but I wish we had a little more crab. The portion is really large, so I'd recommend sharing if you'd like to try multiple items. The Griyo was a dish I read about previously from Fri Tai, so I was very excited for that to hit the table and it did not disappoint. The meat is double fried (which I love) and the outside coating was fried to perfection while the inside still managed to have a lightness to it. So yummy! I wish I had a massive bowl of the rice that came with it. It's a classic rice with spices that make the dish stand out even more. Finally, we for dessert we tried the Gato (pound cake) and Crème Brûlée. Personally, I think the Gato is the must get if you make it to dessert. 10/10 experience and will be back! read more

I decided to come down when I saw that they were serving soup joumou as it is a staple in the Haitian community to start the new year. The restaurant had a large array of paintings that incorporated both the Haitian culture and New Orleans however I wished they played Kompa music as well but it also may have been the time of day that I came in. What a fantastic experience this was. Fritai Restaurant was our first time eating Haitian food and it was everything we hoped it to be. We made reservations for 4 pm on Saturday. I highly recommend making reservations online as this place fills up really quickly. We were greeted at the door by warm vibes, vibrant music, colorful artwork, radiant Haitian decor, and the charm of our waiter Kenneth. It felt like we stepped out of the rainy, cold, dreary Saturday evening and right into a dining room steeped in Haitian culture. Kenneth is the man! Kenneth was our attendant. He is very knowledgeable of Haitian culture and food and gave great recommendations. He has a unique personality, we felt right at home. I'd ask for him if you stop by. The drinks were great. They were smooth and were personally delivered by our bartender, Dwayne. The cocktails were made with high quality, highly rated Rums but I wouldn't know by the prices. Our favorites were the Kremas and the Jungle Bird. The appetizers came quickly as did our entrees that followed. The Alta was the favorite of the appetizers. There was no long wait for anything. Kenneth and Dwayne were on top of it. The dining room was packed. The attentiveness was impressive. We had a great time. The dishes were all rich with flavor and plentiful. We could not finish anything but the drinks and starters. There was so much food. We really liked the Crab Mac and cheese, the Legim Epina, and the Passionfruit wings. We had the vegan Fritai sandwiches. They were spicy, sweet and delicious. The balance of the scotch bonnet and mango is phenomenal. The tofu is well prepared and delicious and the plantains are crispy and delicious. We also had the coco lime sweet plantains. The coconut and lime have a splendid balance, and the lime avocado dip is a perfect accompaniment. The Fritai sandwich was so good that we took one home for breakfast in the morning! Omgee talk about delicious. Fritai is a Haitian place with an amazing vibe and welcoming atmosphere. There are plenty of tables and booths for seating to make it a group affair or intimate night. The ladies and I came here for my bachelorette party and put in a reservation which we were easily able to push back by an hour. We all ordered different plates but shared the Fritay platter appetizers and I ordered the fish of the day which was trout. The fish came with green plantains as well as red beans and rice. It was such a filling dish and had the perfect spice levels. They serve the entire fish so you have to take out the bones but that's easy enough to do when you know how. The Fritay platter was also delicious. They subbed oxtails for the pork traditionally used for the Griyo and it was just as good if not better. We popped champagne bottles in celebration and I also ordered the Charly Horse drink with ginger beer and lime cordial. Everything here was so good from apps to dinner to drinks. I only wish I had had enough room for dessert. I can't wait to come back to this spot and try even more dishes. Highly recommend! read more

This is me finally coming to their restaurant. I used to go when they were in St Roch food hall all the time for lunch. I love the food here Is very Caribbean and can't never go wrong with Pork and their sauces, crema or spicy slaw that bring life to their food. I recently went with my partner and his family on Christmas and I loved trying traditional Haitian for the first time. Amazing food, great quality and huge proportions (worth the money)! Very surprisingly the toasted corn ribs were a group favorite. Not to mention the cocktails, they were delicious and some are made with traditional Haitian clairin (Haitian moonshine). The staff were very consistent and friendly too. This restaurant really differentiated itself from other restaurants in New Orleans, and had its own flare to the atmosphere. My fiancé is Haitian so we were really excited to have a spot so close to us! I will say it's pretty tough to top his family's home cooking so this might be why I felt like a little something was missing. Specifically for me, the black rice not being an option was a bummer. But, all this aside in terms of the taste everything was actually really tasty the fritay platter was really authentic and the pikliz that came with it were also really good! This is a pretty cool place, there is a ton of Haitian art on the walls of the venue that appears to be for sale. There aren't many options in New Orleans for Haitian cuisine but this one doesn't disappoint. The restaurant is small so I absolutely recommend reservations because there will most likely be a crowd. The service was real good there is a lounge where you can have a drink while you wait on your table. Service was great they owner actually was working the door and waiting on tables during our visit. The food was amazing , got an opportunity to try a few different things from the oxtails to the creole chicken and tofu, everything was good. Finally got around to visiting St. Roch Market after always seeing beautiful pictures of the market on social media! The market itself is your typical hipster, gentrified food hall. There was ample seating on a Friday around 11 am. Fritai looked the most appealing to me after checking out the rest of the food vendors. Unfortunately, my expectations fell short, but to give them credit, I think it was my fault for not ordering their more popular menu items. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but I ultimately opted for a bowl of yakamein ($11 including tax), choosing beef as my protein. I should've known to order one of their signature dishes from their glossy wall menu instead of yakamein, which was advertised on a crudely printed piece of paper and taped on as an addendum. Poor judgment on my part! The yakamein wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. It had ground beef, green onions, and a boiled egg. The gluten-free noodles tasted gluten-free indeed. It was just... very meh. A bit on the salty side as well. My friend also ordered their crab mac and cheese and was disappointed how excessively salty it was. These two items are definitely overpriced. I would be willing to come back and give this place another try, but considering the unfriendly service I encountered, it probably won't be anytime soon. read more

This is one of the best happy hour deals in Nola, and I have been to a million. Can't say enough that is good. First of all, our server (bartender) Dwayne was killer. Fritay Platter - a killer mix of different Haitian options, and everything on it was great. If your first time, highly recommended. 2. Crab Mac N Cheese - SO filling and a bit rich, but I mean...crab! Mac and cheese! Together! Super crispy on top, and just perfect. 3. Caesar Aronso salad - I could have eaten 3 of them. If you dig on this kind of salad, order it. 4. Beet Salad - REALLY different. It's thinly sliced pale beets on top of an avocado blend (almost like guacamole), and super light and tasty. 5. Chicken wings - the wings are to die for. They have a few different sauces you can choose from, and we got the Spicy Mango and Passionfruit BBQ. Both were delicious, but I liked the Mango more. Went to Fritai on a Wednesday night @6:30 and it was not packed but full with reservations! Highly recommend you make reservations, esp for groups of 2+. Luckily, my friend and I were more than happy to sit in the "Lounge" and we were also offered the bar which is a nice area as well. I had the Fritai sandwich, which is vegan w tofu, and it was amazing! We also got the appetizer, I can't remember what it was called but they were veggie fingers almost like moz sticks but with veggies and they were sooooooo good!!!! Love this place! read more

My food tour to New Orleans was a unique, fulfilling experience -- one that lead me to some of the best kept secrets the city has to offer. Fritai is easily one of those diamonds in the rough. One of my closest friends happens to be Haitian-American and she found this place while we were compiling the list of restaurants we planned to visit. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendliest host and immediately shown to our table. Our waitress came shortly after, and was extremely attentive (and funny) our entire time there. We started the meal off with two appetizers--the akra and the passionfruit bbq wings. The akra was paired with pikliz dip (sweet & spicy) that made an already great dish even better. But the star of the show, for me, was the passionfruit bbq wings. Some of the most flavorful wings I've had. The sweetness from the passionfruit didn't take away from the tanginess of the bbq sauce. The wings were also nice and juicy. My main was the Legim Du Epina--which is Haitian-style greens with a skirt steak, fried green plantains, and white rice. This main was enough food for 2 meals. The greens were very tender and the steak was cook exactly how I like it! My next trip to New Orleans will include a stop here for sure! read more

I love this place. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is welcoming, friendly, and intimate. The decor is beautiful. I'm vegan and the menu is clearly marked which really helps. There were multiple options for me. The corn ribs were divine. I will be back for those. I had the Fritai sandwich with tofu. The portion was filling (I took a bunch home, except the corn - that was annihilated). I always order a side of pikliz and use it on everything. My partner had the goat ribs and couldn't stop raving about those. Also, I couldn't visit Fritai without their spicy ginger lemonade - it's got a real kick of gingery goodness.
