I'd give this review 6 stars if I could. We live around the corner in Mid City, and have missed their happy hour for a while now. No mas! This is one of the best happy hour deals in Nola, and I have been to a million. Can't say enough that is good. First of all, our server (bartender) Dwayne was killer. Super nice guy, very attentive and knowledgeable, and made sure we got the right mix of food and drinks. He does the place right, and service matters so much. Kudos to him. Then, the food! The chef that night, Dino, made us some unbelievable food. Deserves a shout-out for how good it all was. Here's the rundown: 1. Fritay Platter - a killer mix of different Haitian options, and everything on it was great. If your first time, highly recommended. 2. Crab Mac N Cheese - SO filling and a bit rich, but I mean...crab! Mac and cheese! Together! Super crispy on top, and just perfect. 3. Caesar Aronso salad - I could have eaten 3 of them. If you dig on this kind of salad, order it. 4. Beet Salad - REALLY different. It's thinly sliced pale beets on top of an avocado blend (almost like guacamole), and super light and tasty. 5. Chicken wings - the wings are to die for. They have a few different sauces you can choose from, and we got the Spicy Mango and Passionfruit BBQ. Both were delicious, but I liked the Mango more. Went to Fritai on a Wednesday night @6:30 and it was not packed but full with reservations! Highly recommend you make reservations, esp for groups of 2+. Luckily, my friend and I were more than happy to sit in the "Lounge" and we were also offered the bar which is a nice area as well. I had the Fritai sandwich, which is vegan w tofu, and it was amazing! We also got the appetizer, I can't remember what it was called but they were veggie fingers almost like moz sticks but with veggies and they were sooooooo good!!!! Love this place! read more

I love this place. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is welcoming, friendly, and intimate. The decor is beautiful. I'm vegan and the menu is clearly marked which really helps. There were multiple options for me. The corn ribs were divine. I will be back for those. I had the Fritai sandwich with tofu. The portion was filling (I took a bunch home, except the corn - that was annihilated). I always order a side of pikliz and use it on everything. My partner had the goat ribs and couldn't stop raving about those. Also, I couldn't visit Fritai without their spicy ginger lemonade - it's got a real kick of gingery goodness. Fritai has had my heart and stomach since their days in St. Roch market. Let's just say, the location has changed but not the food. Everything is so delicious and flavorful. What I really like about it is that it is authentic Haitian food in NOLA. You can't beat that. The chef is also really cool. Almost everutime I have eaten there he comes to the table to make sure everything is okay. My favorite is always the griot. Which is marinated and deep fried cubed pork. It is served with plantains, rice and beans and pikliz...mmmm Recently, they started brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays. I am soooooo disappointed. Thoroughly disappointed. I just can't be more disappointed. It's not that the food was bad. It would be much less disappointing if the food was trash. It'd make more sense if the food wasn't good. The food could be good, in theory, I just wouldn't know. Everything surrounding the food is just awful. Let's start with the service. It's gotta be some of the worst I have ever received. It got so bad to the point where we felt completely slighted. Our table sat there discussing if we did anything to upset the staff. I mean there couldn't have been anything we did to upset them, because our server was nowhere to be found. Literally, nowhere. We kinda just sat there for 3 hours. It was so long, by the time we left, we were all different people. I mean, it's bad, like deplorable. Like we discussed just walking out of the place. Our entire group are restaurant people, so tips matter, and tipping well matters. This was like leave zero dollars bad. Regarding the food, I guess it's good. It could be good. I guess. I watched all the YouTube videos and read all the hype about this place, and was legit excited to visit - only to have all of our dishes come out ice cold. Cold wings. Cold sandwiches. Cold oxtail. Just cold. F'ing why?????!!!!! Like I said, if the food was trash - that'd make more sense. The issue here is that some poor cook went through all this trouble to put all these different flavors together only to have it served to guests in the most disappointing way. Like why? Why cook these wings, and serve them ice cold? It's offensive and negligent and the apathy really shines through here. It's a mess here. I desperately wanted to like this place, but I hate it. I hate everything here except the one lady, who wasn't our server, who cared enough to ask us how we liked the food. I told her. That's the least I could do, to her face and not behind the computer (which I am doing now). This is just soul crushing bad, and I am writing this review because this is such a cautionary tale for anyone considering this place. She felt awful, and gave us 20% off. Let's put this perspective. Fritai is located inside of St. Roch market and sells Haitian food. They accept Apple Pay, which i have mixed feeling about because I try to leave my card at home so I don't eat out as much--Apple Pay is my downfall. I ordered the smothered greens with mushroom tofu. I will start by saying that I'm not a big fan of tofu, but the mushroom tofu is really good! It's sliced thin long, and it's not the usual short blocks of chewy sponges. The greens are very good! Well seasoned and perfect with the rice and beans. You get a pretty large bowl, and it's very filling. Fritai makes eating vegan or vegetarian dishes easy peasy! I will say...the young lady with locs who took my order clearly didn't want to be there. I had my first Haitian food experience and I loved every bit of it. We wasn't aware that you had to make a reservation but the hostess accommodated us. We sat in the lounge and ordered drinks until we were to be seated. The customer service was A1. Our waitress came to the table several times as well as other workers. My friend and I started with the clarinha drink, the soursop flavor. It did not disappoint. We also had the old Haitian and that one was even better. First of all the vibe of this place is amazing the second you walk in. The service is incredible as well. And the food, ooooh the food. Wow. So yummy. The Friyo is amazing, as is the baked crab mac. I mean everything was really but for me the star was the fried green plantains with their spicy salsa (forget the name) or the spicy mango sauce. Had reservations and when we got there there were four tables sat. I ordered the clairin flight and let the server pick for me. I had never had it and didn't know what to expect. It wasn't for me. I like a place that lets you order the meal as you go so I didn't think anything of the fact the server only took our app order. The akra and corn ribs were very good. The wings were a big miss. I found the restaurant nice, and the service was amazing! The ambiance truly pays tribute to Ayiti culture with the artwork and voodoo flags. The drinks are excellent, the portion sizes are fantastic, and it seems that most of the processes are done correctly, but something is off. Although the food looks Haitian, it doesn't taste Haitian to me. There's no taste, or it lacks the depth I was expecting. The pikliz has no pepper and too much vinegar, which is a basic mistake. Best dinner we had in Nola this weekend, as we got tired of the same old chicken and waffles or the shrimp and grits. These things are good but sometimes you want something different. I'm from Brooklyn NY near a neighborhood called "Little Haiti" so I know Haitian food. This may not be the most 100% authentic place but it comes close enough and is executed better than a lot of places including those tourist trap places. It's a homey cozy spot that's good for either date nights or friends and family with kids. Surprised by their cocktails, tried the siklon which was a hurricane/rum punch type of drink. We also got akra as an appetizer which was tasty but not the same consistency of akra I'm used to. Shrimp kreyol was pretty good, sauce was more tomato than anything else but still delicious with huge plantains on the side. Also got the legim and chicken, was able to get a side of rice on the side instead and chicken was so tender and flavorful. Complimentary kremas topped it off nicely despite getting buzzed on just the first drink. Service is warm and friendly, nice that some of the servers don't make a stank face if you don't pronounce the names correctly, I don't think they're all Haitian. read more

My 1st time at Fritai was during the soft opening. The food was excellent. My second visit last night was disappointing. The menu had changed and I'm ok with that. We had the platter which had. 2 different plantains, Akra and griot. The platter was good but the Akra had changed to thin slender fritters from the normal oval shape fat fritters. I had the crab Mac with passions fruit wings. The wings were excellent but the crab Mac was bland and I couldn't find any crab. The Creole chicken came out without the Creole sauce. The waitress notice it and said I'm let me go back and get the sauce, it's supposed to be dripping in sauce. The sauce was needed. The chicken was better without the sauce. The baked crab mac n cheese is bland, dry, and sad, really disappointing! But the Griot Plate makes it allllll good. Crispy pork, fried green plantains, red rice, pikliz (Google says a spicy vegetable based condiment), Creole sauce. This is such good, hearty, filling food. Fill 'em up warrior food. Or drinking food. It's just not salad fork picking food, so order hungry. The picture is poor quality but I promise that pork is sooooo tender, way more tender than the photo makes it look. All the parts come together so well, the rice is delicious, and the pikliz is really unique! We came towards the end of brunch unknowingly, but the staff and chef did not turn us away and accommodated us kindly. We ordered the grilled shrimp pikliz and acra to start, and both were delicious! For the main course, our crab Mac and cheese and the Fritai Benedict were sooooo good! Our waitress advised us to come back and get the wings with extra sauce added on to the crab Mac and cheese. Incredibly good! I stopped in here for a quick dinner after a photo shoot a few weeks ago, and I was excited to try this spot, as I had heard raves about how good it is. Lucky me there was no line or crowd, so I ordered the sweet plantains and the smothered Haitian greens. The plantains were plentiful, cooked perfectly and delicious! They were so good that I almost got another order to take home to snack on later. The Haitian greens bowl was wonderful. It was tender greens served with red rice and pork shoulder. The hospitality is phenomenal here. This place is tucked away and you could drive right blast it if your aren't paying attention. They offer vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. I decided on the chicken dish, sorry I don't recall the name, however the chicken seems to be have sitting for a while and then sauce was added when the dish was prepared. The meat was dry and almost crunchy. The fried plantain seemed to have had the same treatment. It was just moist enough for human consumption. The cold slaw/relish is way too spicy; it is also pickled which no one told me about. I would try this place again sooner in the day when the food is more fresh and prepared better. read more

good vibes in the new location! i've been a couple of times to the new spot and while the food is just as good, it's nice to be able to enjoy the food not in the middle of a food hall. i think the first thing you'll notice is the great service - attentive and friendly and you definitely feel like they want you to be there. i've also come by just to dine on my own and you can grab a seat by the bar or in the side "lounge" area. with that said though, if you're in a bigger group you should definitely make a reservation. the menu has items from the old spot and some new things (espageti is fun!). i'd say of the recent tries the wings were a slight surprise, go ahead and order some of those. they also have a cool drink menu, with some spirits that you may not find in other places. haven't yet had a chance to try desserts, but just means i'll have to be back soon! read more
