My pup LOVES it and the instructor Sherri is SOOO patient and so good with the pups. She tailors the exercises for the different skill levels so it's fruitful for everyone. I know my pup is...different (he's part husky so he likes to talk) and Sherri never makes me feel bad about it. The Level 1 class is difficult to get into because it's sooo popular but so worth it! read more

I am embarrassed that I did not review Frolick Dogs a few years ago, and an email from them just made me think "yikes, did I review them???". Shame on THIS bad dog Mom! We found them in 2017, I think that was the summer when it just rained and rained and rained. My Goldendoodle - New England boy that he is - had a hard time with the DC heat/humidity and then the rain just compounded a season of misery. The first time we went for open play he was cautiously curious: thrilled to see other dogs but nervous about the agility equipment. Then we went for a Doodle Meetup, and he watched the brave Doodles on the balance beam, going through the tunnel and jumping over the bars. I eased him into the tunnel by throwing a ball, and he will do anything for a ball. I met nice dog "pawrents" here, some said they came to break up the boredom and a few said their dogs were losing weight and getting in shape. I took a first aid class here (3 hrs, I think?) that was really informative and made me feel as though I could handle an emergency if needed (thankfully, I have not needed it) as well. There is a lot of parking on Colvin St, just mind the signs and driveways to other buildings. If we were not 450 miles away, we would be back there for sure but finding them was a great experience. We adopted a dog last week who from day one, had a lot of undisclosed aggression and guarding issues. I called Frolick Dogs in a panic, hoping someone could look at our dog and let me know what is/isn't trainable. Kevin went out of his way to make sure I was seen as soon as possible. We sat with him for an hour - during which he gave us incredible advice and tips on how to combat certain behaviors and what to do next. He made us feel seen and heard, and his tips seriously helped us manage our dog while we looked for a better-suited home for him. My lab has been going 2 days a week to Frolick Dogs for almost 7 years now. Now that's he's 12 yrs old and having some issues with arthritis we've cut back to half days. Kim, Kevin and the rest of the team take good care of him and he loves them. He is so happy when I drop him off in the morning, can't wait for play time with the tennis balls! His Frolick time has kept him fit and healthy. People can't believe he's 12, he still has so much puppy in him. I've also taken advantage of their dog wash station. What a cool place! I took my dog here during their "open gym" hours which is every weekday from 5-7pm, for $15. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we were the only ones there, but according to the staff, even when they are busy there are, at most, 5 other dogs. They did a quick intake on us and then brought us back to the gym to show us the agility equipment, and then let us play around. I have never taken my dog to an agility gym before, but we loved our time here. They had hurdles, a seesaw, and a bridge, and it was a good amount of variety. After reading the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I was considering Frolick for dog training. I decided to check out the facility today and use the indoor gym. Unfortunately, after my experience we won't be going here for training or for any of their other services. I will caveat, the gentleman that helped get my dog and I signed in, showed us the equipment, etc. was friendly. We had the indoor gym to ourselves which was nice, but my overall experience and impression of Frolick Dogs was negative because I found the facility to be absolutely filthy dirty. I am a dog owner and fully understand our beloved furbabes can be messy. However, the indoor gym appeared to not have been swept in years. My dog kept getting fur from the ground on him. I wouldn't let him drink from the bowl of water that was set out because I simply didn't trust the bowl or water was even clean. Looking around the gym it was evident the gym was extremely dirty and appeared very run down. The gym seemed so dirty to me I was genuinely concerned about my dogs health if I were to leave him here for training. I am a huge supporter of local business and I hate to leave such a negative review, but it's also important to be honest about my experience. read more

You would think after owning 6 dogs over the last 30 years that we would have this training down! NOPE! Our new rescues came under unique circumstances with equally unique challenges. And it had been a LONG time since we'd had a puppy! Kevin was amazing in identifying both nuances about the dogs as well as in my training "style". After just a few lessons (for husband and me) we are already on the right track and seeing great improvement. I sure wish we had Kevin's dog karma - they clearly sense his presence and behave at their best simply when he walks into a room - not so with us, yet?!?!? Kevin is marvelous! He does train the dog, but he also gives the owners insight how dogs think, which changes our behavior with our dog, and we are getting results. The first three trainers did nothing to improve our dog and how we handle her. Kevin is Yoda for dog training. Their facility is also wonderful. Our dog has learned agilty with their course, and she has learned to listen and be focused. I cannot say enough good things about Kevin, Kim, and the rest of the dog-loving folks at Frolick. We had our puppy's first birthday party here yesterday and EVERYONE (adults, kids and fur babies) had a blast! The space was big and open and allowed to dogs to really run around when they were not checking out the agility equipment. They also had clean up tools on hand in case of some dog accidents so the place stayed clean. It was also really nice how Frolick decorated the place with dog themed streamers, table cloths and even had balloons tied on the agility equipment. Rusty was great too! She was very helpful and patient in assisting and showing the kids how to get the dogs on the equipment and was taking lots of pictures. I was skeptical when she said she wanted to take a group picture because kids + dogs = chaotic pictures, but she did it! We can't wait to see the pictures! I highly recommend this place if you are thinking of hosting something for your fur babies. Our guests had a great time - adults loved it, kids kept talking about how much fun they had and all the dogs slept in! I think they'll be tired until Monday. Frolick also allows you to bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) and any other things you'd want to bring to your event. They did provide non-alcoholic drinks for all the guests and party treats for the fur babies. The room was set up in a way that the tables for food and drinks were segregated from all the dog area. Wow, I am so impressed by Frolick Dogs. They are truly committed and dedicated to help dogs and fur parents. Kim was very responsive and helped us set up an evaluation for our new puppy. We were lucky to meet with both Kevin and Justin for the initial evaluation since there were some problem behaviors that we were seeing with the puppy. Kevin and Justin clearly are experienced and really took the time to listen to our concerns. They explained their impressions, shared their experiences, and gave us very honest and transparent advice. That's really all you can ask for when looking for a trainer. We brought Winnie here for a playgroup event and it was so much fun! I wish we lived closer or else we'd frequent here more often, but definitely plan to come back again in the future during their after hours/weekend events. She had a blast which was proven with her long nap when we got home! The staff was friendly, accommodating and assisted any pups with the agility equipment. The playroom was clean and the equipment was good quality. They also have organic treats, a community water bowl and clean up supplies in case your pup uses the bathroom. We hosted a birthday party for our pup, Toby, at Frolic and had an absolutely wonderful time. Working with Frolic was seamless. They were very attentive and responsive via email. All of our questions were answered promptly and they were very accommodating. During the party, there was a staff member there the whole time. She took amazing photos and taught many of the dogs how to do various obstacles around the gym. We would HIGHLY recommend renting out Frolic gym for an event for your dog. This is our home away from home! We absolutely love Frolick! Frolick was the first place that I brought my new Australian Shephered puppy, Rhiannon. She was about 10 weeks old and terribly shy. Slowly, but surely, the meetups and puppy play dates helped her open up. Now, she isn't afraid to go and say hello to anyone. The staff is her second family. We feel so loved and welcomed by them each time we walk into the door. It truly is like coming home for us. Rusty is by far our favorite--she's taken so much time to help me become a better and more confident owner and treats Rhi with so much love, like she's her own pup. I would give Kevin and Kim 10 stars if I could! We enrolled our 8-month-old Bernedoodle puppy, Dolly, in Kevin's 3-week day care/training program in April of 2019. It was remarkable to see the complete transformation of Dolly during her time in training. Prior to Kevin's training, she would jump on guests and pull on walks. Now, we have had multiple dog owners stop to comment on how WELL behaved she is. Some have said they are shocked that she is still a puppy. This would have been unthinkable just two months ago. We also want to commend the support staff at Frolick for taking such good care of Dolly. She LOVED going to Frolick, and it put our minds at ease to know that she was in such good hands. I realize that it is a significant financial investment to commit to the three-week program. I love bringing my dog, Lucy, here. She has a really great time, and Kim and Kyle are wonderful with her. I adopted Lucy in early March from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (also a great place!) and they had gotten her to be a part of Dr. Katy's Freshfit Weight Loss Challenge, which included training sessions at Frolick. She has been able to use the treadmill and will do some jumps there, and it is amazing to see how other dogs are able to use the facilities to do training. It's especially great to go there when its raining outside. Today, we used the self-grooming station, and I found it to be extremely clean and easy to use. Additionally, all the supplies were provided, including shampoo/conditioner, towels, brush, and a drying station). Since she's been coming to Frolick Dogs, she has lost approximately 6 pounds (from 26 pounds to 20!) and it has also been great to get her socialized with other dogs outside of a shelter environment. read more

We've been going to Frolick for use of the gym, daycare, and agility classes for awhile now, and I can't count the number of times my husband or I have said some iteration of "Frolick is just the best". Update about the agility classes: When you first look at an agility course, it's kind of overwhelming, but these classes are amazing. Sherri is a fantastic trainer and has a way of breaking each section down into manageable parts as you learn. I'm very confused by the fact that 100% of the reviews left for this establishment are 5 stars. I noticed one 2 star review in the reviews not recommended section that is on par with our experience. I really wanted to love this space. An indoor gym for dogs is such a great place to have access to in the winter!! So I give the idea one star. And another star for its location being so close to our house. That's about all I could find redeeming about this place. I called before coming to the gym because I wanted to confirm that we could truly drop in. And the person who greeted me on the phone was very nice and also let me know we would be shown how to use all the equipment on our first visit. When we arrived we signed up and paid $12. I wanted to know if we could just get a tour for free and I was told no - I have to pay $12 regardless. Fine. I'm ok with that. Strange because most human gyms at least let you tour for free. After completing the paperwork and paying, a woman was asked to show us to the gym. She took us to the gym area and informed us "The gym equipment is pretty self-explanatory. The first time your dog is here, he will probably just run around the room and smell everything. Check it out." And then she disappeared. The room itself I have to note is TINY. There is agility equipment smattered around the room but not spaced very far apart from one another. Then there is a partition that prevents you from accessing the doggie treadmills so we never got to check those out. The pictures are really misleading. This is a great facility if your dog is a small breed. But we have a 70lb German shorthaired pointer. So he did play with the agility equipment but after leaping thru a hoop or over a pole he had to take a lap to run off the momentum. Anyway, all of this was tolerable - the facility was totally disappointing but I was definitely willing to just get my dog some good exercise for the day. UNTIL... another staff member started barking rudely at me that I would need to put my dog on a leash if he wasn't going to stay at one equipment because he was a distraction to the other dogs. And then he yelled "this is not a dog park!" I was shocked because the woman who "gave us a tour" ie dropped us off told us it would be typical for our dog to run around which would naturally lead me to believe that was allowed. Am I crazy?? We were never told our dog wasn't allowed to run around without a leash on (really?? This tiny gym and he has to stay on one piece of equipment? What kind of dogs are they targeting?). And my dog was approaching other dogs and being friendly and wanting to play with them - we were never told we weren't allowed to let him interact with the other dogs. In fact before we went in, the woman asked the owners of the only other dog there if it would be ok interacting with other dogs. Anyway after being yelled at, we left. We were there probably only 10-15 min inside the gym facility. What a waste of money!! I also want to note that the other staff member who barked at me was spending a lot of time working closely with another dog who was also brand new to the gym, showing that dog how to use the equipment and used props to help give the dog more exercise. So I get that the gym equipment isn't hard to figure out but why were we not given that same experience?? read more

My pup Stella attended Frolick for their excellent three week training program and while I won't call it a miracle, she has had an amazing improvement! Her main trainer was Brian, but we dealt with all the staff including Kim and Kevin on a daily basis and they were all terrific! I got daily updates (pupdates) from them and when Stella was a bit agitated they let me bring her brother Chauncey to keep her calm... All in all it was a terrific experience and we would love to keep taking them to the gym and to play with the other puppers there and continue honing her new skills. I'd say it was a good value for the money and Stella continues to improve.... We definitely recommend this terrific family business! read more

I saw the excellent reviews for Frolick Dogs, which caught my attention. I searched high and low for dog training places in Alexandria, and I couldn't find any other dog training facilities with reviews as great as Frolick Dogs. I called to schedule an appointment for dog training, and I heard back right away. Justin Ashby was assigned to train my little Oliver, a mini (very mini!) Goldendoodle, who was seven months at the time. Justin was so friendly and answered all of my questions over the phone, and then we set up an in-person meeting so that he and Oliver could meet. Justin spent well over an hour with us explaining the training process and completely put our minds at ease. He explained the training equipment that would be used and walked us through the day-to-day training procedures. We were ready to sign up, so we scheduled a date for the Dayboard-and-Train 3-week training program. Unfortunately, my little Oliver's leg got broken (a large dog stepped on him on accident) and we had to postpone training. I was worried Frolick Dogs would give me a hard time because I know how hard it is to get an appointment for training. But, Justin was super understanding of the incident and had absolutely no issues rescheduling us for another time. After the broken leg fiasco, we got Oliver started for training. We could drop him off anytime after 7 am and pick him up before 7 pm, which is super nice because you get a 12-hour "daycare" in addition to the training! At the end of each training day, Justin would meet us and explain what lessons he worked on with our puppy. Oliver was always eager to go to Frolick Dogs every day, and he adored everyone there. I could tell that he was loved and treated well. During the three-week training period, we got three lessons with Justin where we (the parents) got to learn and practice the skills. I watched what felt like a million Youtube videos, but nothing clicked like Justin's lessons did. After three weeks, our puppy was TRANSFORMED - no more crazy pulling, he would come when called, and he was calm and controlled around animals and people. The third "parent" lesson was extra beneficial because Justin (I assume other trainers there would do this too) waited a few weeks after training was over to meet with us. This was to get our dog out of the training routine and see how we were doing. This session was super helpful, and it helped me "clean up" my training and ask follow-up questions. Oliver was BEYOND excited to see Justin after a few weeks- I thought he was going to explode! Again, another testament to how well treated and loved he was! As we thanked Justin for everything, he told us that just because training is over doesn't mean we have to disappear! He said we are more than welcome to reach out to him and that we are always part of the Frolick Dog family, which meant a lot to us. Oh, and the doggie gym is fantastic too - indoors, so you can go there rain or shine and the agility equipment is pretty fun. Kim walked us through the equipment to teach us how to use it so you do get guidance with it. I HIGHLY recommend Frolick Dogs and the Dayboard-and-Train 3-week program. We went there for a meetup event. The staff was outside helping people with parking (amazing!). The play room is large and has high ceiling. The room doesn't smell bad like most dog facilities do. All the agility equipment are legit and good quality. They even offer free organic treats for dogs (even more amazing!). My friend had a doggie birthday party there and said it was great. I'm late to the party, but I need to give kudos to Kim and Kevin. My 2.5 year old toy poodle Cherry has been coming here since she was about 8 months old weekly for use of the equipment. She LOVES agility, loves to play with the dogs she encounters (once she meets them properly that is), and I can't say enough about the atmosphere. Cherry has taken two formal classes, and Sherri and the other instructors are fantastic! I'm there almost every Saturday, and it is well worth the bonding time I get with the dog. Kevin & Kim (and staff) are magical with dogs. After Vincenzo defeated a trainer we started driving him to Alexandria to get his energy out and meet other dogs. The gym area and treadmills are extremely useful tools in addition to the training Vincenzo gets outside of his visits here. After a day at the gym I can take him outside and train him and he is calmer and willing to listen, prior to this he'd just drag down the street. After three dog gym days I was able to get him to sit, lay down and walk at my side because he's no longer filled up with energy without a healthy outlet. I love Frolick dogs and so does my 1 year old Puppy Piper. Every morning before o leave for work and she realizes she isn't going to day care she whines and cries. It kills me. Kim and her staff are awesome. She regularly emails me through out the day w pictures of my dog playing w other ones. I love it. Piper is SO exhausted when she gets home which makes Mommy and Daddy so happy bc she has a ton of energy and it's hard to keep up. I buy a pack of 5 for $175. I think that is reasonable. We thought we had given up on doggy daycare, after our anxious dog tucked her tale under her legs and shook violently when we dropped her off at a daycare in DC. So, we moved out to Alexandria, outside of the service area of our beloved K-9 Divine Dog Ranch, and we knew we had to find another day care. We could not be more pleased with Frolick. I was really nervous, and I picked up the phone to call Frolick, where Kevin Gilliam answered. He was reassuring, and I felt comfortable enough to take our anxious, high energy dog in to the Canine Fitness Center. (I will admit when I called my mom back in the Midwest, she definitely mocked the dog gym concept, but it is really amazing, and not more money than other doggy daycare. Do not feel pretentious about this. It is just a waaay better dog daycare at the same price point as most area dog daycares, which is probably why they use the term day boarding. In fact, when we did the math, a monthly package would put the daily cost less than a 45 minute walk with most walkers in the area.) We met Kim Gilliam, who is one of the kindest people I've encountered, and Bailey loved all of the agility equipment, and we decided to send her three days a week. Bailey loved her immediately, and so did I. We were really nervous on her first day, but Kevin and Kim were wonderful and reassuring. And Bailey loves the place, which is not just a holding cell where dogs play, but rather the dogs are actively working their bodies and minds when handlers take them out on the agility equipment. I think there a few distinguishing factors for Frolick from other dog daycares: 1. They work to see which dogs can play together. For our anxious dog, there are clearly dogs at the dog park who make her uncomfortable, and in a traditional day care setting, she might be around a dog she is frightened of for 12 hours. 2. Dogs are interacted with, and use their minds to figure out the agility equipment. Being there builds confidence in the dog, since she is learning new things. 3. Dogs are walked outdoors. At many dog daycares, the dogs just go to the bathroom inside, which is not a habit we wanted Bailey to develop. 4. The nap room. They have a sunny mezzanine area with individual crates (we were able to put Bailey's beloved sweatshirt in hers) for dogs. 5. Professional, owner involvement. When I've dropped my dog off to prior daycares, I have felt like I am leaving Bailey with an hourly worker who may or may not care about my dog. Kevin or Kim or another dog training professional is always there. They even sent some adorable photos of Bailey jumping the agility equipment on her first day. Kim and Kevin are absolutely wonderful, and we know we've found the right place for our dog. read more

Lifesavers!! Our dog had bad separation anxiety, so much so that he couldn't stay home alone during work days. Other day cares didn't work well because they were only warehouses with big rooms full of dogs. Frolick is totally different. Dogs get individual attention, walks, agility, exercise, Etc. the entire staff is GREAT and they spend a lot of time and effort working on dog manners, and correcting for behavioral issues. Going to frolick has also helped alleviate the separation anxiety our dog experiences. And they are priced comparable to the other dog gyms that don't offer as much. It's a great deal. read more

We brought our dogs to Frolic Dogs after they excelled in obedience training it was recommended they might like agility. Our German Shepard is 10 years olds and Cockapoo is 6 months; both are super friendly and don't have an aggressive bone in their bodies. After check-in we were taken to a side room because we were told another dog in the main gym was afraid of large dogs. We thought we would just be in the small room to be shown some of the equipment or to be slowly introduced to other dogs; this was not the case. Due to the fact we had a German Shepherd, we were kept segregated the entire time and were not allowed in the agility/obstacle portion of the gym at all. When we realized we were not going to be allowed to try the obstacle course and we went to leave, we were not offered a refund and were told "to come back on a day it was not raining." Our dog is very well behaved and had we known this was going to be the case, we would not have paid to sit in the side portion of the gym. We will not be back "on a day it's not raining" or any other day. Dogs thats aren't socialized or are that afraid of other dogs should be the ones who should be kept separate, not well behaved dogs. read more

We really learned a lot of great foundation principals for agility, and we've already signed up for the next level class, and can't wait to get started. My dog and I love Frolick. He is a high energy lab and always comes home exhausted. He loves Kim and Kevin because they reinforce his previous training and take excellent care of him. During his day at Frolick, he plays with other dogs, works out on the treadmill and other equipment, and takes a nap.
