I found the Frost Cafe while wandering 'round the countryside one late afternoon in search picturesque vistas and buildings. I've recently developed a taste for late afternoon coffee and the craving and the cafe collided at just the right moment. There was plenty available to tempt the palate but I still had a way to go chasing a sunset in the Shenandoah Valley so I stuck to my serendipitous plan and only had coffee. Pretty much what a southern diner should be. Food came out quickly, service was good, and a tuna melt and soda was less than $6.

Frost Cafe isn't bad, but it isn't particularly good either. The prices, for the most part, are rather affordable, but that reflects in the overall quality of the food. --- Plus, if you've lived in Culpeper long enough and remember what it was like to come here back when it was Gayheart's Food & Drug, it just doesn't compare. Gayheart's truly felt like an old school diner and drug store. Frost Cafe feels like someone trying to copy that old school vibe. The service at Frost Cafe isn't bad, but when it was Gayheart's, no matter what time I came in, it always seemed like someone there knew me. Also, with Gayheart's most of the staff was older ....well into there 50's. Going there felt like you was getting served by your mom in a way. Frost Cafe will never recapture that magic that Gayheart's had :( read more

I had breakfast here once and the food was good. The wait staff was unfriendly. The worst part is they DON'T take credit/debit cards or checks! They only take CASH! Who carries around cash these days?? They even have an ATM machine on premises for customers to get cash. If you decide to go there bring cash so you won't have pay extra $$ fee using the ATM. read more

I'm giving this a 4 purely based on the service, and the breakfast. We have eaten here on several occasions, and I would say to stay away from everything else. The steak is frozen, defrosted in a microwave and then overcooked..... steak sandwiches the same, grilled cheese has worst quality processed cheese.... etc. But, I have never been dissatisfied with breakfast. I like to treat myself to some wonderful pancakes every other Saturday. The environment is amazing and the food is even better. This is starting to become one of my regular Saturday Diner's. I really enjoy eating at frost then visiting the farmers market right around the corner. read more

Love this place! Haven't had a meal I haven't liked yet. Fun for the young ones. One bit of advice - Bring cash. They do not accept credit/debit cards. There is an ATM onsite but it doesn't always work. read more

Holy moly frost cafe was the best diner I've eatin at in Virginia my husband and I went there for our first date and loved it they give you huge portions great service and a wonderful atmosphere I hope they stay around for a long time I want my son to have his first date there it's that amazing my husband loved the potato salad read more

Terrible. Service was pleasant but slow. $23 for a hot dog, PB&J, sandwich and coffee - it was all terrible and they didn't bring everything we ordered. We used to get a decent breakfast there, but it must have changed hands. Will not be going back. read more

Pretty basic. Scrambled eggs no different from the guy down the street. Asked for crispy bacon that came floppy. Burnt home fries that tasted like they were boiled first then thrown on the griddle to burn. Service was pretty good and I think most people go here because it is convenient. read more

A delightful diner-type restaurant. It had a wide selection, several specials for the day, and everything we had was tasty - from the fried chicken and meatloaf to the burgers and sides. There is even some seating on bar stools near the windows. A pleasant find. read more

I love to eat here. In fact I have a training class in Culpeper tomorrow and I am excited about starting my day at the Frost Cafe. My only complaint would be the policy of not excepting plastic for payment. But I'll get over it when I belly up to the counter tomorrow....... read more

This diner was a disappointment. The food was run of the mill at best. The service was not adequate as the wait staff appeared to be disinterested, slow, and inattentive. There are too many options these days to make this one your selection except in a pinch. read more

I think yesterday's visit was simply a bad day for the waitress. However, unfortunately this sort of thing reflects on the cafe as well. The sign inside the door says something to the effect of, "Please wait for a table to be cleaned before seating yourself". The four of us stood inside the door for awhile and watched as the cafe was moderately busy that morning. However, we spotted an empty booth. One waitress in particular was hovering near the empty booth while she was carrying on a conversation with the booth next to the empty one. After about 10 minutes we decided to seat ourselves at the empty booth because there were other patrons waiting behind us at the doorway. When we sat, the waitress came to our booth and informed us that someone was going to have to get out of their seat so she could wipe the table. Although there was no previous attempt to clean it. I graciously accepted the cloth from her and wiped the table myself. No problem, but also no "thank you" from her either. She went on to give us menus. The four of us received lunch menus only and it was not even noon yet. When I went to the counter to ask her for a breakfast menu, I overheard another waitress telling her that the sign at the door says to wait until the table is cleaned. Obviously speaking of our seating ourselves before the table was cleared, I told her that we could leave if it was too much trouble. With no response I returned to the table, left $5 for the 2 cups of coffee and 2 waters that we received and we left. The confusion began when we entered the door. There is NO WAY for a patron to know if a table has been cleared while standing at the door. Recommend the owner change the sign or have a hostess to seat patrons. Too many restaurants available in Culpeper to put up with her on such a beautiful day. Breakfast at IHOP was delicious that day! read more

I took my family here for dinner this evening and we had a terrible experience. There wasn't any wait staff so the cook had to do double duty. When she finally came to our table to take our order she not only was rude, she kept making mistakes writing down our order. 15 minutes later (!) we had our burgers, peanut butter and jelly sandwich and chicken fingers. She forgot our drink order, and when my 3 year old son burned his mouth on a french fry that was just taken out of the fry oil, my wife had to run over to the counter to find the cook to ask for our drink order... repeatedly.... 3 times. Finally the cook brought over our drinks. WORST SERVICE EVER and I'm usually pretty forgiving of local places but this place was just terrible. I hate to say this but you'd be better off going to IHOP on the other side of town or the 4 C's diner across the street. read more

Several months ago, I would have given this restaurant a 5. It used to be one of my husband's and my favorite breakfast spots to where we would drive 45 minutes on a weekend. This past weekend we had such a horrible meal that it may be the last time we go. We both got the breakfast "special" which included a waffle, two eggs and choice of sausage patty or bacon for $8 plus dollars each. The waffle maker was apparently not working correctly and we were brought 1 waffle to divide between the two of us while the other one was cooking. This would have been okay, but it was doughy in the center. The second waffle came out about 5 minutes later which was perfectly done. The only problem was their syrup. It was literally like turning on a faucet it was so watery. It ruined the waffles completely - they literally fell apart! I mentioned this to the waitress who said that this was what came with their new syrup order, but really. I've never seen syrup that watery. It looked as if it was thinned with water - a lot of water. It ruined the meal. When you pay a decent amount for a waffle, you should at least expect to be served a thicker syrup! Even though we could not eat our waffles ( they disintegrated on our plates), we were not compensated, nor apologized to for their inferior quality. Not happy. read more
