We tried the Mango and Ginger flavors. I am pleasantly surprised how much I liked the ginger snow ice, not something you would normally find on the dessert menu. And the worker informed us it was made with real ginger. + They have about 20 flavors. The flavor is not just added on top of the shave ice using artificial color and artificial flavor like the other shave ice places in Hawaii, but blended in using real fruit or ingredient before they make it into the ice. The texture of the ice dessert is so light and like eating silky smooth snow that just melts when it hits your mouth instead of chunky pieces that you crunch down on in regular shave ice. Their flavors are very distinct for some. My favorite is lychee. I also like durian flavor ( whew can smell it across the room). But a star less for both the cost and blandness of watermelon and cookies-n-cream. The cookies-n-cream tasted more like a watered down cocoa. This is a pretty unique place because the shaved ice doesn't taste like anything I've eaten before. The ice is very light and fluffy; I ordered a small one my first time and felt pretty dissatisfied because it felt like I didn't eat anything at all. Second time, I ordered the durian flavor (large this time) and didn't notice that the seasonal flavors are a step up in price! With me and my friend, both ordered large seasonal flavors, total came out to be $15! No matter how good it tastes, I think that is a bit pricey... As for the dessert itself, the flavors really come out well. I've tried black currant and durian. The durian really feels like I'm eating durian! I think they use real fruits and not artificial flavoring which is good. Service is really good as well. For a family restaurant, they really care about the customers. They ask everyone if they've been there before or if it's the first time (which prompts an introduction of their menu) and then come by while you're eating to make sure everything's ok. I'm a die hard old-school Taiwanese shaved ice kinda girl. My family favored the thicker ribbons of ice from the knife-cut style, while most people in Hawaii prefer the very finely shaved ice. Frost City is popularizing a newer style of shaved ice from Taiwan that's been very popular in Asia and on the mainland. The ice in snow ice has already been flavored with cream, milk, sugar and fruit before freezing. It's shaved into very fine ribbons after solidifying, then Frost City serves it with a sliced strawberry, some yummy mango and lychee balls that burst in your mouth (I've already heard all the 'that's what she said' jokes on this one, thanks to Sherri), and a few little pieces of mochi. It's good, but pricey for the amount you get. The flavor is very light--so light that my friend Sherri made me drive her to Bubbie's for some real dessert afterward! :p We ordered the pear and while I liked the subtle Bartlett pear flavor, it didn't do anything to wow me. It was just slightly milky and sweet. Service is excellent here--the counter girl was very friendly and helpful. I just prefer my traditional Taiwanese shaved ice. I was expecting it to be super busy but there was no one but my husband and I. I fell in love with snow ice when we went to Taiwan so I was excited to try. In LA snow ice has gained popularity. We had to try Frostcity after reading the reviews. To make the comparison fair we ordered the black sesame flavor. My usually is black sesame with red bean, rice balls and condensed milk. I read how small size comes with four toppings. Turns out you cannot choose your toppings. It comes with fresh fruit, mochi, jelly and their version of boba. The boba reminded me of a tiny grape that pops in your mouth. The jelly had no flavor. The fresh fruit was three tiny pieces of watermelon. The black sesame had a really good flavor to it. For those that have tried Blockheads or Salju, this black sesame is good as Salju. The toppings here were SAD. You get very very little toppings. They do have durian so I would come back to try that flavor. They really need to change the amount of toppings they give you. Minimum $10 charge for credit card. I have yet to try all their flavors, so far haupia and strawberry are my favorites. I'll recommend to call them ahead of time, sometimes they look like they're closed when you pull into the parking lot. Also, the parking lot is small so you may want to ask ahead if it's busy. Very impressed by the desserts here. Being from LA, there are several of 'snowy' & 'shaveD ice' places I've tried. Frost City definitely gives those places a run for their money... even though they are thousands of miles away. The service at FC is great. The cashier was welcoming and explained/sold the items very nicely and with pride in what they were selling! Very genuine about it. I recently relocated to Honolulu, and on the plane ride over I read about the snow ice at Frost City in the Hawaiian Air magazine. After reading the article I internally jumped for joy at the fact that I was going to be able to go there!! I ripped out the page just to make sure I would not forget. After going there twice thus far, I will say I was NOT disappointed. This place is like a little slice of heaven. The cashier was so helpful and friendly. I'm sure she goes through the spiel about the flavors and which are the most popular about a 100 times a day, but she was not the least bit annoyed by the fact that it was my roommates and my first time and she had to go through it again. And, the second time I came in solo and she remembered me right away. They have so many flavors, and even have several options without dairy which is great for lactose intolerant people like my roommate. My roommate tried the lilikoi and I went for the watermelon (strawberry on my second trip). The presentation almost makes you not want to eat it it's so pretty. As we sat down to eat I commented to my roommate that I should have brought my water bottle because I always need water when eating ice cream, and then I looked up to be pleasantly surprised by complimentary ice water. This place really is a little gem, and I know both my roommate and I will frequent it often. The only down side I can comment on is that sometimes they run out of flavors. For instance, while eating I overheard the cashier telling some customers that they had been out of watermelon for a few weeks. I was glad I got lucky on my visit, because the watermelon is amazing- tastes just like a watermelon! Oh, Frost City, you were one of the loves that I didn't get to say a proper goodbye to before I moved back to the mainland. This has to be one of my favorite places on the island. I went there for the first time after my coworkers kept raving about it. The owners are so nice- the head owner is the sweetest lady and somehow always recognized me when I would go back! h The treats are delicious. They are all natural (unlike some other similar looking places on the island), fresh fruit ice ribbons in a variety of flavors. Then run from the traditional and fruity to the more savory and unexpected (black sesame, avocado). Some of my favorites are the apple banana, blackcurrant, and pineapple. Each plate comes with a few extras: popping boboa, fresh fruits, mochis... There are seasonal flavors at times (pumpkin, lychee) and they can run out if they can't get the fruit fresh or a flavor is extra popular one day. They start making new ice as soon as they close and they do it all themselves! Because of this the hours start a little later in the day but it's always worth it! Though some flavors are just a tad milder on the pallet, there are quite a bit of them that can really satisfy. My personal recommendation is the Mango or the Strawberry :) In terms of price I wouldn't say that Frost City is the cheapest. But $4 for a dessert is somewhat of a standard. With all things aside, Frost City is definitely a great alternative to ice cream and yogurt. This place is great! I checked it out after seeing that it was the #1 bookmarked place on Yelp one month. And it's truly worth it's high rating. I've never had anything quite like this. It's hard to describe, but it's icey and flakey and rich, but refreshing and not overwhelming. Satisfying but not filling. I've had a few different flavors but my favorite so far is the haupia frost. It has a light and delicate flavor and is complemented nicely with the fresh fruit and the little popping ball things. We took it to go one time and they packaged our frosts in a bag with ice as to not melt on our way home. So thoughtful! They stayed perfectly frozen and were delicious all the way to the last bite. This is just perfect! I never had snow ice before, but even with nothing to compare it to, I know this is grand because it's made of real fruit instead of sugary syrup. It's also creamier than shave ice but not creamy enough to be shave ice cream (if that exists). And it's airy, so when you put it in your mouth, it bursts with the natural flavor of the fruit or ingredient you picked while it melts in your mouth. The temperature is right too because it doesn't turn your mouth freezing cold halfway into it, so you will be able to enjoy each spoonful from beginning to end as though it were your first. I have come to the conclusion that snow ice is NOT my thing. I love ice cream and shave ice but I don't like desserts thats a hybrid of the two. I ordered the lilkoi which had no milk in it but it still almost tasted like there was milk in it and didn't really hit the spot like shave ice does. I wanted something cold and refreshing at the time. I know that they make their desserts from fresh fruit but I paid $6.20 for a small. I should have taken a picture because it really wasn't worth $6.20. Yeah, definitely not a cheap dessert. Ailana's makes their syrups from fruit and they are $3.50 for a HUGE small. The staff was friendly and the place was clean and if you like snow ice, this is definitely better than Snow Factory, but I don't think I'll be back. Mainly for personal preference but also because those craaaazy expensive prices. I'm sorry, but $6 should be for a slice of decadent chocolate cake, not a small ice dessert. I got the Haupia & Chocolate, along with something they call the Hong Kong milk tea. The "pearls" (boba) in the milk tea were overcooked/hard in my opinion, so I won't be getting that again. I'm not a fan of Hong Kong flavor, I prefer standard Taiwanese milk tea, but I couldn't find that on the menu. Anyway, the key thing here is the frosty ice, which, from what I could gather, is a new thing in Taiwan. My first bite was a let down, but the more & more I ate, the better I liked it. I think I was let down because I had Ted's bakery in my mind (the Haupia pie), which is a much stronger flavor. The frosty ice sorta reminded me of Taiwanese pastries in that its a very lite taste.. much subtler than an American cake, and not as rich. By the time I was done, I was loving it. I'm so glad we found Frostcity. The snow ice is so much better than shave ice and the ingredients are fresh and local. I've never had this type of shave ice where the flavors are already part of the ice and therefore, no syrup is added. It was so creamy and delicious. My BF loved it too and normally, he begrudgingly accompanies me to these types of places. After trying a bit of my haupia ice, he just kept on going. Normally, he takes a bite just to satisfy me that yeah he tried it. This time, he easily ate 1/2 of my large ice. After, he looked at me and asked me if I wanted another one. After a long internal debate with myself, with pride winning out (I didn't want to look like a pig), I told him no, but that I'd like to come back tomorrow ^_^ He agreed and said that next time, we would each get our own. As the other reviewer said, sharing is stupid. You will want your own. Taste: Excellent. The staff/owners were really nice and explained that the fruits are obtained locally and the black sesame (which I'm so going to try next time), they grind themselves. The texture of the ice is so light, it's almost creamy. Service: Excellent. After dealing with Coffee or Tea (never going back there again, see my review), we looked for warning signs (about what we could and could not do (everyone must order, not a free lounge, etc that are posted at Coffee or Tea). In fact, when we walked in, we braced ourselves for "WHAT YOU LIKE ORDER!!!!" we usually have yelled at us at Coffee or Tea. Instead, the individual there said "Welcome" and smiled. We probably looked shocked to death. Price: It's on par with what we paid at other specialty shave ice places. If anything, it may be a tiny bit more but considering they make the ice themselves and don't just pour syrup over it, the time and the labor makes it very reasonable. Time to jump on the Hong Kong Frost snow dessert craze people! ! Saw the write-up in Midweek and decided to try it out. The lady and man who were manning the place were very friendly, and were constantly asking if we were alright, and willing to answer any questions we had about the menu. The environment is quaint and cute. The presentation of our large haupia "frost" looked like layers of julienned haupia one on top of the other, and frankly, it feels like you are just eating something subtle, light, refreshing...Frost. The presentation of the "frosty dessert" included a few sides of jelly, fruit, and a sprinkling of sesame seeds on top which gave it a nice crunch. Looks like they run out of a lot of flavors, and fast! Things like "Black and white" or "red and white" were already sold out, and when they are sold out, they are sold out for a couple of days! Take out is even a possibility here (get to your destination within 15 minutes less or else); the man made such a big effort to help this customer carry 3 large "frost" dishes to her car. FINALLY got to try out this place and took my mom to broaden her shave ice horizons. I chose the mango, something sure to please, and it did. It was fruity, slightly sweet and creamy without being overly so. My mom seemed a little confused at first, but she enjoyed the novelty and that it wasn't sickeningly sweet like other shave ice can be. I love Taiwanese shave ice with all the strange but delicious toppings! This one came with mochi balls, and little juicy bubble things, as well as a rolled up wafer cookie garnish. She told us all about how they make all the flavors themselves, and how they only serve the best quality "frost". She also asked how we heard about them.. "YELP! duh!" The owners here are SO nice, which makes me want to support this place even more! Our frist round.. we ordered Peanut, and Watermelon (Larges of coarse! $6 each) Oh my gosh they were SO good! The ice was soo light and airy, but had so much flavor! The peanut was creamy, served with chocolate syrup, and had a great peanut butter flavor! The watermelon was fruity and delicious! Each shaved ice comes with mochi, popping boba, lychee jelly, and "fruit". The fruit today was a few small chunks of apples and pineapples. The strawberry ice I got was not very flavorful and tasted pretty bland. The apples and pineapples were not sweet at all and tasted like they were soaked in salt to prevent browning. I kept hearing so much about this place... It was kind of a let down. Now I'll say this up front. I'm not a sweets person. I usually skip dessert to eat whatever is left over on everyone else's plate. But I kept hearing how the shave ice here is "different" and it was but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Now the shave ice here is "different," it tastes like the flavor is infused into the ice itself but 6 dollars a pop and no choice of what you can add to the dish itself... well I'd rather go to Yogurtland, Mencies, or YogurStory and do it up how I like it. The place itself is very hole-in-the-wall. The place itself share space with some weird bracelet selling shop. The menu is printed on a blackboard up front with a few pictures plastered on the walls (They don't have all the items pictured). Now I can see if you're really into dessert, you might really like this place because it is something different compared to the other places I listed above. But for someone that's very sensible, I feel like i can get a better deal and a better atmosphere at one of those other places. read more

The first thing that came to my mind when trying Frostcity for the first time was how it compared to Snow Factory, since they were the first ones to introduce snow ice to Hawaii. How they set themselves apart is that they put a lot of labor and love into their snow ice, which is made in house and from fresh fruits. They also plate their desserts beautifully, using popping balls (like inari fish eggs but with fruit juice inside!) and fresh fruit as garnishes. Such a high quality product is gonna demand higher prices.. and the desserts are pricey. The flavor of the ice itself is very light and subdued. My bf actually prefers Snow Factory because of this. Snow Factory gives more for less, and with a stronger, more artificial flavor. The snow ice is still an unsubstantial dessert here, making you feel like you ate nothing. A great option for those wanting to eat light and healthy! Of note, Frostcity also serves some fobby Cantonese warm soup desserts you can't really find anywhere else in Hawaii.. like coconut tapioca, mango pomelo, walnut soup, and bean curd w/gingko. Mmmm, bean curd and gingko soup, just like how mama used to make.. Oh, and let's not forget GRASS JELLY!! I also highly recommend the strawberry black tea, with real pureed strawberries! Okay, I debated the 1 star review because don't get me wrong, the shaved flavored ice taste really good. Unfortunately, there are three other major factors that trump the taste. First off, price is oh my gosh so expensive. $6 for a regular sized single flavor with that tubular cookie thingy, tiny shreds of mochi, a teaspoon or two of yogurt balls, and scraps of cantaloupe and green melon. The portion of shavings looks big but its just full of air. Presentation looks nice, but really??? $6 for this. Second, service was pretty slow for an empty shop. I stopped looking at my watch after 10mins had passed since I ordered my shaved flavored ice. Third, going back to substance wise, the dish really isn't that much. Its full of air. I understand that its shaved, but for the price it could be a whole lot cheaper. To me, I felt like I spent $6 to suck on a cold piece of good tasting tiny candy. I felt like I had nothing in my stomach. I had to drink four cups of their free water to feel like I ate something. I can spend a lot less at a serve yourself yogurt shop and be full. Really $6??? Sorry I had to put that again because the price is outrageous. I only bought it because my wife wanted to so desperately try this place at least once. A side note that I did not consider in the rating since they really have no control over it, is parking. I just like to mention, parking there sucks. I went at night, the shop is empty, there is only a video store open, but yet, all the stalls were taken. We were lucky enough someone left just about I was to call it quits for finding a parking spot. All in all, I will never go here again. Big UPs for customer service! the staff here are extremely nice & very helpful, they make you feel welcomed and explain their product to you. Wide selection of flavors to choose from, food presentation is picture perfect but I think the price is a little too high. I wish my Blueberry came with actual blueberries like in the pictures!!! The watermelon taste exactly like you're eating a watermelon, its so refreshing on a hot day! esp. on a day with no trade winds!! :O Lots of seating with nice furniture. They also have a little jewelry shop in the back. Their ume spam musubi is really tasty and still warm when I ate it. overall, come here for COOL dessert and great customer service! read more

I'd much rather go to frostcity for dessert rather than nearby Bubbies or Yogurtland. interior is nice and welcoming with brightly colored walls. staff is family run and very friendly and accommodating. known for their unique "frost" dessert. a light and refreshing desert to clean your palate after a late night dinner or to cool off on a hot hawaiian day. The frost is made from fresh fruit and is both delicious and healthy. There are also many flavors ranging from sweet and savory flavors to more interesting flavors such as horlicks. the frost is a bit pricey for a small but well worth it. the large is a very large portion that can be shared by 2 or 3 people.The desert comes with various toppings depending on your choice and include fresh fruit as well as those little jelly fruit balls that pop in your mouth. In addition to the frost, you can also choose from other HK styled offerings such as tea eggs, milk tea and seasame seed balls. Frostcity was NOT our first choice that Friday night. Bubbies was. I admit it and I'm so glad that Bubbies was, as always, super freaking busy. My friend mentioned that she had always wanted to try it. We parked near Bubbies then walked around the block, near Burger King and Jiffy Lube. We finally found it and was very happy to find that it was crowded but still had seats and no line! Perfect. There was four of us and we tried three different flavors: chocolate+haupia, lychee, and green tea. We were blown away with how light the dishes were and how true the flavors were. It didn't taste like ice drenched with flavors. it's like they took a lychee, froze it, and shaved it. DELICIOUS. We suffered through the brain freezes and then realized...we wanted more. Sharing was stupid. We ordered the nutella one and polished that one too. After ten minutes of arguing, we decided AGAINST ordering more but man it was so delicious. It seems to be a good place to not only come for some late night dessert but even come by to study, get a snack and stay awhile. I can't wait to come home again; this time Frostcity will be my first choice. read more

Awesome place if you want something light, frozen, and different. Everything from the texture to the taste will give you something to talk about. Layered to perfection and garnished with tasty fresh fruit and popular Asian favorites (like Mochi, Boba, and Jellies) will totally take you out of that FroYo craze. During my visit I tried the Black Sesame and really loved it. The flavor was not overwhelming and it tasted really good. The texture is like a really fine shave ice with an ice cream taste. I was skeptical due to the way it looked, but like most foods that looked scary...it tasted pretty damn good. The owner was really nice and pleasant. She was even nice enough to serve it plain for my picky friend who loved it too. I would have given it 5 stars, but there is not a lot of parking. Its kind of hard to find if you are not really looking, but who doesn't love hole in the wall places? Despite the parking, I will return soon!!! I'll just park at Burger King! ;P read more

I was craving shave ice / ice cream (anything cold really) and remembered someone instagramed a picture of this place so I decided to check it out. I've been to antoher place, Snow Factory in Mililani, where they do the same thing - shave flavored ice instead of put syrup on ice - and compared to that place, Frostcity was a much more enjoyable experience in every way. The variety of flavors makes everyone happy - from sweet to tart to plain flavors. It took me a while to decide on a flavor, but I got the strawberry and my bf got the cookies and cream. Both were delicious! So soft and refreshing and true to taste. They came on a nice white plate with fruits, mochi and jelly. The staff there were so nice and friendly as well. The cashier was more than happy to answer all of our questions and gave us recommendations and even hooked us up with extra mochi. She walked around asking if everyone was doing alright and if they needed anything. I can't wait to go back to try a new flavor! And next time I think I'm going to get the larger size :) read more
