They have some pretty awesome ice cream with a huge variety of options, from milkshakes and hard ice cream to sundaes and ice cream sandwiches, there's truly something for everyone. A quick heads up: this place is cash only, but they do have an ATM conveniently located on site, which makes it easy if you forget. Parking isn't the biggest lot, but there's additional space next door, so we've never had much trouble finding a spot. The staff is always friendly, and even when the line looks long, it moves surprisingly fast. I participated in the Rhode Island Food Fights 9th Annual Ice Cream Event and this was my thirteenth stop. There was a huge line wrapped around the side of the building when we arrived, with few parking spots left in the lot. The line went by a little slow. I wish they had the menu posted somewhere along the side of the building to look at while waiting since I felt pressured to make a fast decision when I got up there to not hold up the line any longer. Luckily the menu for hard ice cream is short. I went with the flavor that sounded the most interesting and have never tried: playdough, while my brother ordered the coconut. The playdough was a bright highlighter yellow color with chunks of colorful dough. The base tasted like vanilla and the dough did not have much flavor. It reminded me of biting into the chewy part of a cowtail candy but with no flavor. I was disappointed. The coconut did taste like coconut, but more artificial than I had in mind. There are no benches or tables so most people were eating the ice cream in their cars. We sat on the wooden logs nearby meant to be a barrier for cars. read more

Cute little ice cream stand in Middleton. It is cash only here. They have an atm but there is a 3$ fee. Pretty big menu. They have various flavors of soft serve. I think they have hard serve too? I have been going here for decades. Since moving farther away this was the first one this summer. I actually got a mini vanilla soft serve cone. What a hidden gem in Newport! Definitely not overpriced like other icecream spots, and though it's not directly downtown, it's only a little bit out of the way. One benefit is plenty of free parking!!! We tried the delicious soft serve: the coffee/vanilla swirl and the vanilla swirl with rainbow jimmies. Expect a line if you come during peak hours (after school time, weekends, or after dinner time). However the line moves quickly and it's absolutely worth the wait! Prices are very reasonable. Don't let the line scare you away, it goes by so fast. They're friendly and efficient. I always get hard chocolate either with hot fudge or as a milkshake. They don't have regular hard serve chocolate (it's called extreme) but they have several flavors of soft, hard, and froyo which is a lot for one little shop. Yes, Yelp user, my Black Raspberry hard ice cream was so good it inspired me to jump back in line and get a soft serve Nor'easter (basically a DQ Blizzard) of coffee ice cream, peanut butter and m&ms. Just awesome, delicious, flavorful. The missing star is because the signage is all at the front window. When there's a line, it makes the line move So Much Slower because people have to "see/read" what's available. Frosty Freez is the only ice cream parlor in Middletown and brings nostalgia to all the locals. I originally was from Middletown and can say every child felt excitement for April 1 when Frosty Freez was open for the season. They have Hershey's ice cream mixed with a few others. There is a soft serve machine that mixes flavors, along with the normal Garelick Vanilla and Chocolate soft serve. Garelick has a really thick and sweet soft serve, which beats any hard serve flavor. This amazing little ice cream shack is a staple part of any Rhode Island summer, and it's a rite of passage into being a true Islander to wait in line for a hand dipped cone or sundae on a July evening! We decided to make a post dinner trek out to Middletown (gasp! A Newporter who gets in the car to do something!) to get our first Frosty Freez fix of the season, and I sure am glad we did! The cute location is conveniently placed right off a busy main road. There's a limited amount of parking and seating for the crowds that gather (trust and believe you WILL run into everyone and their grandma here), and the lines can snake around the building, but it's very much worth the wait for the yummy frozen delights! They carry a variety of flavors and styles of ice cream, from soft serve, which is best dipped in a hardened cherry or chocolate glaze and sprinkles, to regular hard ice cream in a myriad of offerings, like the wacky "Play Dough", which is a cookie dough ice cream with rainbow dough bites. So fun for Instagram - millennials take note! I also love the Only8 Frozen Yogurt, which is a tasty low carb alternative to the more decadent menu items - but the upside is that you won't feel guilty adding some toppings! This lighter treat comes in chocolate (recommended), vanilla, or a swirl of the two, and you can definitely feel good topping it with some homemade (!!!) whipped cream and fudgy chocolate sauce. Does it defeat the health benefits? Maybe, but hey, it's summer! Frosty Freez is CASH ONLY, so be forewarned. The line usually moves pretty quickly, but waiting is actually half the fun, as the people watching is some of the best you're gonna get outside of downtown Newport. This place is a legend on the island. Good stuff cheap, as they say. I went to my 50th HS reunion a couple of years ago and some of my classmates were telling stories about working here. Is the location unassuming? Absolutely. In fact, its aesthetic is really no different from any other small town ice cream place. They serve Hershey's Ice Cream, slush, and other goodies. There are not many flavors to their soft serve (there are add-ons), but there doesn't NEED to be anything special beyond one simple item: the Coffee/Vanilla twist. Upon being explained by the very kind server what their soft serve offerings were, several customers behind me brought up that I had to try the Coffee/Vanilla twist. One even claimed it to be the best ice cream in Rhode Island. And they're not wrong for saying that. The Soft Serve borders on custard in it's thickness. You can turn the cone upside down and it'll stay on the cone. The flavors are subtle, as if coffee milk and vanilla milk were combined to make a luscious dessert.
