Went to Newport for a birthday trip (I'm from CT). My friend looked at this place I think on Apple Maps for my "birthday cake" since I hadn't had any yet. The shop is smaller, but clean, cute and easy to pop in and out. The area of Newport where it is, is very nice. I enjoyed both of these cupcakes a lot. The lemon curd filling in the lemon was super good. Both cupcakes were moist, not too rich, and the frosting was amazing. It still had a very "frosting" flavor but it was thick and creamy enough to hold its shape, but not totally like you're just eating sugar. The chocolate raspberry cupcake was amazing. The raspberry frosting is extremely memorable and the chocolate flavor of the cupcake was very good. I am a big vanilla cake fan, as a lot of chocolate cake sometimes tastes funky, but I assure you this one is very good. So many selections it was hard to choose but the first trip I got the gooey butter bar and the second trip I didn't stray too far and got the pecan gooey butter bar. I'd eat both over and over again. We went in here after learning that they have Gluten Free offerings! The attendant was very well informed on not just their gluten free offerings but their process! They have unique cooking utensils, a separate area to prepare the items and the only risk of cross contamination is a shared oven. Coming back from the cliffs walk and viewing the mansions, I wanted something sweet. And boy did this place give me that sweet... a little too sweet? Flavor of the day was a cinnamon roll cupcake. I went in on a night where there were a few families and it was really noisy, but the girl helping me was very nice and super patient as it's sometimes hard for me to make a choice of what flavors to get. I got the red velvet and the vanilla and they were both a hit. There's a lot of frosting on them so be ready for a frosting explosion, but worth every bite. Lunch at the drift Cafe was followed by cravings of dessert and just on the opposite side was Cupcake Charlie's, so it was an easy choice. They had lots of flavors for cupcakes - chocolate, oreo, vanilla, chocolate raspberry, lemon, hostess, etc and as few other items such as cake pops, trifles, and shakes. We got three things to share - a double chocolate cupcake, a lemon cupcake, and a raspberry chocolate trifle. There weren't many seats but we managed to grab a small table with a couple of chairs. We ate the chocolate cupcake right there and it was great. Chocolatey as expected, unexpected chocolate bonus in the center too. Could've been a little less sweet but wasn't over the top either. Even though it was a hot day, the remaining desserts held up on the ride home. We ate the lemon cupcake later that night and the raspberry trifle the next day. I think Cupcake Charlie's is one step up from supermarket cupcakes. On this visit I picked up some frosting shots so that I could give my dog her meds. I also picked up a little cupcake trifle. It's in a 4 ounce cup so if you're not feeling like a jumbo cupcake, this is a good alternative without all the guilt!! it was extremely busy due to a cruise ship debarking in Newport on an 80° October afternoon. There was only one employee and she kept her composure, was extremely friendly, and worked efficiently! There are a couple of tables inside, or you could sit on the steps or stone wall outside. Went in on a Friday afternoon for a couple iced coffees and a small cupcake in a cup treat. Iced coffees were fine, the cupcake in a cup was stale and my friend threw it out. The girl that rang us up was not overly friendly, and seemed to not quite get the order.. there were no other customers in the place, yet she seemed a bit flustered. We didn't leave a tip, and she seemed annoyed, kind of barking "have a nice rest of your day" a bit sarcastically. It's not like us not to leave a tip, but why leave a tip for abrupt service? There were four of us. One of the four was lactose intolerant. There were some treats on a tray that were labeled as "Vegan" and another that said "dairy free". There were no treats under the label that said "dairy free". So one of the people in the party asked if there were any dairy-free treats, and someone else responded that the vegan treats are in front of you, or something like that. Anyway we didn't get the vegan cupcake and my friends left the store while I was preparing my iced coffees. Anyway, they probably thought that all of us had gone because that same girl immediately started talking about us, kind of saying that how would we not know that vegan treats are also dairy free. I didn't catch everything that she said, but it was obvious that she was talking about us, kind of like we were idiots. I spoke up and said that there was a misunderstanding, that it wasn't really clear. Anyway if we did make a stupid mistake, why not be kind about it? Why not just simply walk over and say "well, if you are looking for a dairy free product, the vegan products are also dairy free?" But none of that happened. Sadly they were sold out of the Hostess, but that's ok, we quickly found replacements options! lol. I selected the Peanut Butter Pleasure and Grammy's Carrot Cup and my husband went with Chocolate Mint Madness and Chocolate Overload. We loved them ALL! The frosting was soooo good, and FILLED with flavor and yumminess! Awesome cupcake shop on a lovely retail street in Newport. Stopped in on early hot Thursday afternoon. There are few seats (about 4 tables with some chairs around them) in the space itself. The shop has lots of sweet dreams: cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, cookie sandwiches and ice cream. I was impressed with their variety. They have lots of interesting flavor options. We tried some cupcakes (~ $3), ice cream (~ $3.50), and trifle cups ($ 4.50). Though the soft serve ice cream was great...I expected more from the cupcakes. The hostess chocolate cupcake and trifle cake were both pretty dry. I would have expected something a bit more moist. I'm probably not the target audience for this place but I'll share my opinion anyway. The smell in here is intoxicating. There was no one here when we went in at one point, but when we came back later there was a line almost out the door. Service is pretty fast so don't be discouraged by the line. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have vegan cupcake cups for $2.89. (Full vegan cupcakes are available by special order only, but that's ok--I kind of liked the smaller portion.) The frosting is REALLY sweet to the point that it hurt my teeth. The cake had a nice vanilla flavor and impressively tender texture. My friend enjoyed her non-vegan cupcakes. The "cupcake whirlies" (ice cream flurries) also looked super decadent and perfect for a hot summer day. You definitely need a sweet tooth to come here, but Cupcake Charlie's is a great spot for a sweet treat in Newport! read more
