Rating: 4.3 Came to stop by while walking around Newport. It's a small gelato/sorbet speciality shop. The place seemed to be older so the door was stuck and staff had to come struggle to open it. Inside is typical of ice-cream shop with counter and the cooler with different type of gelato/sorbet. They have variety of flavors and some interesting one like Dubai chocolate, mandarin and Maine blueberry. They do let you try if you ask so if you are not sure you can ask to try them. I ended up getting large just so i can try different flavors and it's also just $1 difference from each size. I ended up getting Belgian chocolate, peanut butter browny and chocolate chip affogato flavors. They were all very tasty. I was impressed by the Belgian chocolate as it was super rich chocolate flavor i was looking for a while. Service was good but the staff did struggle with the door and had issue with credit card reader too. Maybe should be more ready for customer when they open. Overall i still liked their gelato and would be a good stop for frozen treat in Newport. read more

The door is very old and needs lots of pushing by the workers to open so they prop it open at all times~ You can taste test many flavors and you won't be disappointed. This is the perfect place for a summer treat! My friends and I were looking for something sweet to end our day in Newport and we stumbled upon this place. All the employees at the shop were really friendly and allowed us to sample a few flavors. Most of them were actually from other countries and were just working in Newport for the summer, so it was interesting hearing about their experiences here. There was some seating inside, but I'd recommend taking your gelato to go and walking around the beautiful area nearby. The gelato itself was delicious and creamy. Within several blocks there are actually two Ben & Jerry's, two Kilwin's, and some local joints. Cold Fusion Gelato sells gelato and sorbets made by hand in their MA factory. Newport was their first location and the company just opened their second location in Westport, CT. Sorbet was the perfect, refreshing dessert after dinner, while strolling down Thames Street. It was difficult to choose from the many enticing fruity flavors. One night I ordered Key Lime and the next night, Passion Fruit. You could taste the fruit flavor bursting through. Cold Fusion's fruit sorbet was the perfect combination of sweet and tart flavors. Will definitely return on our next visit to Newport! read more

They turn out flavorful and reasonably priced gelato and sorbet season after season, and make a mean espresso, too. This time, I got a chance to try the Dark Chocolate Sorbet, which was AMAZING. I'm still thinking about it! It may sound weird~ a chocolate based sorbet flavor ~ but give it a try. It's sweet and rich, without being too cloying or inedibly bitter. Want to up the level even more? Try it with the Stracciatella Gelato - you won't be disappointed! Service is stellar, as usual. When I went in, I was assisted by Brooke and Krishma, who kept the line moving efficiently and with a friendly smile. Yes, the gelato is great, but the team is really what makes this spot special. I remember Brooke from last season, and glad to see that she's back again, adding her signature personality and pizzazz to this awesome hidden gem of a shop! They are also fastidious with COVID protocol - be forewarned, there's no sampling and payments are by card only. This was a lovely spot. I had looked up vegan ice cream places and they came up. So we decided to try it and it was just right. Lots of flavors to choose from. We visited the shop mid September as part of the RI Food Fights ice cream passport in September. Although the website states daily hours of 8-5, Yelp and Google showed different hours. I eventually discovered a trip advisor review from early September of a customer visiting several times on week days to find it closed. The owner commented that fall hours were weekend only. Not professionally listing a change in hours on any platform automatically docks a star for me. The shop is on a one way street. Luckily, we were able to find a metered spot right in front of the shop. We arrived a little after 3:30pm and watched a worker bring out the street sign. The shop is very small. Inside there are three round tables for couples. The menu included coffees, lattes, and shakes with the gelato and sorbet. On the website, they advertise having 34 flavors on display. I didn't count, but I definitely believe them. One freezer was filled with sorbet, and the other with gelato. The two scoopers were very nice, and informed us we could try unlimited samples. One of the gelato flavors I wanted, caramelized banana, was strangely very hard. The scooper said it wasn't normal, as she struggled to get a sample and a scoop for another customer. I tried a few more samples, but settled on the Tiramisu gelato. The boyfriend ordered the Peanut Butter Brownie gelato. The flavors of both were nice, but they melted very quickly. The texture was possibly too soft. I might come back in the summer to see if the consistency has changed. read more

I tested several samples of the sorbet and couldn't make a decision they were all so good and I skipped the gelato (this time). My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is simple, the single scoop is big, they could easily make a single scoop two flavors. It's an east coast v. west coast gelato throw down! Not really, but I'm a Californian who lives in an area packed full of gelato options, so I was definitely curious to see how the product is handled in the east. Overall, they didn't disappoint. I kept in mind that this shop is smack dab in the middle of the busiest, most touristy area of Newport, so that would account for any lines or inconveniences in parking. The shop itself is small, simple and quaint. The jovial gentleman behind the counter was more than happy to hand out samples and was a good salesman. Over my ten minute wait, I didn't see a single person walk away empty-handed, and believe me, there were some indecisive people in line. The gelato itself was a little more creamy and a little less sweet than I'm used to. I enjoyed the vanilla bourbon the best. The only let down - and maybe this was just a matter of timing and what they had in stock - was that they just had four options and two of those were takes on vanilla. Both were exceptionally good, but the toasted sesame and honey especially was incredibly unique! In addition, the servers were extremely friendly, upbeat, and nonjudgemental when it came to giving out samples. So good! I don't usually have a sweet tooth for me most of the time a blue berry muffin or a kiwi does the trick but we were on vacation in the newport area and there are so many sweet delights I had to try it. They did not disappoint, we went up and down Thames Street window shopping as we passed the establishment it was slammed packed. On our way back to our car we decided to see what the fuzz was all about and I'm happy to report Cold Fusion Gelato hits the sweet spots with the right amount every scoop. i'm a gelato/ice-cream magnet, on the attracted end. was drawn in from across the street after dinner. although there weren't a huge myriad of flavors on display, there were enough to turn me into a kid in candy land. some of these flavors were VERY innovative too (ex. basil and curry, anyone?). was tempted to have a taste of a couple of the exotic flavors, but the place was too busy and i dared not hold them up. the line... i mean, there was no specific line, it seemed. got to order and stuck w/the mainstream stuff: cherry choco chip and choco strawberry. can't say either of them were memorable. just way too sweet and way too cold. i thought the gelato are supposed to be "warmer" than ice-cream, and while i prefer those on the colder and firmer side, this was a bit too cold. and i am speaking from a hot july/august night. i can't decide if $5 (was it more?) for those two-scoops is considered "inexpensive", or "moderate". probably somewhere in between. read more
