Was craving a spicy chicken sandwich so we finally stopped in at Fry The Coop. Read the Yelp reviews and people seemed kind of split on how spicy exactly "hot" was. I tend to find things around Chicago just not quite hot enough, so we decided to order one sandwich at "hot" to test our taste buds. The cashier was quick to point out that their "hot" was REALLY hot and was trying to talk us down to medium since it was our first time. She even offered us a sample of their "hot" seasoning on a few fries. The sample had a great kick that lingered in the palate and throat, but we decided it would definitely be tolerable with a drink. So we ordered the Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich (hot) and Spicy Butter Fried Chicken Sandwich (medium). Food came out relatively quick. Super messy with all the sauce but overall very good. Both were good in their own ways. The sandwich is probably a little smaller compared to other chicken sandwiches around the city. The "hot" ended up being way less spicy in combination with the sauce and coleslaw on the sandwich so I'm actually a little tempted to try "crazy" next time. If I was eating plain tenders though, "hot" probably would have been enough. read more

In the past, every time I write "no pickles please" they still include them. Assuming their logic was that on the side is ok, this time I wrote "no pickles please, not on the side. Not anywhere please :)" I really wanted to avoid wasted food and plastic, but I know that is a little silly, so I added a smiley face. They still included pickles and took the time to add a note that said "hope you love the pickles!" (While we waited by the counter for them to finish writing the note and bring the food out.) I don't understand why they had to make me feel like a total jerk for making a simple request in the most polite way possible. My favorite fried chicken in Chicago. The west town location is always prompt and the food is hot and delicious. The spice ratings are no joke. I've had boisterous friends assume the max level won't touch them and they've regretted it. We usually opt for medium which is 3/6 and has a nice heat but not painful. Going to Fry The Coop, felt like I caught a flight directly to Nashville! The menu is pretty simple which I loved! I landed on the 'Chicken and Cheese' sandwich and 'Cooped It Up' by adding house fries. The sandwich was simply perfection! The bun was toasted and warmed, the chicken was the perfect size and JUICY. I ordered my sandwich 'medium' temperature/spice level and it had a light kick and tons of great flavor. The seasoned breading gave it a nice crunch which may have been my favorite part aside from the savory 'special sauce.' I loved their seasoned fries too. It was so easy. I placed my lunch order and about 20 min later, I parked outside with my hazards, called the restaurant to provide the make and model of my car, and the friendliest person brought my food out to me. I got a lunch meal: a Nashville Chicken sandwich, seasoned fries, and a soft drink and it was about $15. Their heat levels are: Country (no heat) Mild (taste the flavor) Medium (feel the heat) Hot (feel the burn) Crazy (call 911) Lil Insanity (R.I.P.) The "Hot" was just what I wanted, enough spice to burn and then wash down with a gulp of cold fuzzy soda. I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken, cheese fries and cole slaw on UberEats. The cheese fries were missing and I was sincerely really looking forward to them. When I called, I was told I could pick the fries up (defeats the purpose of ordering on UberEats) or get a refund on the app - it seemed like a rushed get-you-off-the-phone call not really an apology or real acknowledgment. HOWEVER, in terms of the food I did receive, it was delicious. For the hot chicken they let you pick between different levels of heat. I chose the regular "hot" and you can feel the heat on your tongue. :) The chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy and worked well with everything else in the sandwich. It was also very neatly packaged and put together, which I appreciate. The cole slaw was tasty as well. It would've most likely been 5 stars had it not been for the fries. Uh, turns out it's in there: they just throw a handful of bacon bits into the waffle batter I mean, that's fine, but everyone else just calls that a Bacon Waffle. Listing "smoked bacon" separately made me assume that I'm actually getting, you know, some strips of bacon. I think most people would think the same. So it's misleading. They use metal trays and glass at the bar, but I was disappointed that my Chicken and Waffles came in a huge plastic dish, which was less classy and immediately got tossed into the trash. Ouch. Sooooo, I stumbled across Fry The Coop from word of mouth through Instagram. I was very impressed honestly. The entrance was photogenically appealing. When you enter the restaurant you'll have to gaze over the plethora of items on the menu. Being an out of towner, I'm very bummed I can not taste more of their food over time. However, this just means I need to venture back to Chicago! My donut chicken sandwich was good! The sweetness from the donut swirled with the HOTNESS from the chicken accompanied with that pickle drizzle a tad bit of honey mustard ... lip smacking experience. Guaranteed!! Very good fried chicken burger! I really liked the honey butter one, the sweetness of butter mixes really well with the fried chicken. There are 6 different spicy levels, I would recommend to have the mild one if you can handle some spicy. We also tried the ghost pepper one, it is not too spicy, but at the same time it is harder to taste everything else as the spiciness really overpowers all other taste. the chicken tender is ok, so is the fries. Hot Chicken is a hot concept right now. My first experience with hot chicken was in Nashville, the birthplace of hot chicken. Fry The Coop does a great job paying homage to this Nashville delicacy. We were here on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. It was pretty busy but we didn't have any problems securing a table and service was very attentive. The two women running the show were very kind and answered all of our questions well. We got the sandwich at medium hot and tenders at hot-level hot. Be warned: the jump in spiciness and heat from medium to hot is huge! The flavor situation here involves a dry rub so the flavors take some time to really develop as you eat. Ghost peppers are added to the situation for hot-level heat. I had to pace myself with the hot-level tenders and I regularly eat spicy food. The food itself came out very quickly and everything was very fresh. The house coop sauce was perfect with fries but I ended up preferring the ranch to cool down the heat from the tenders. All in all, we'll be back again for more hot chicken. I'll probably split a hot order and a medium order with someone so I won't be as overwhelmed next time with the heat! read more

Hot chicken sandwich is on the rise! Competition is stirring and Fry the Coop is a solid contender. Big chunk of juicy, crunchy, chicken. Tried both the classic Nashville Hot Chicken (med) and the Spicy Butter (mild). I prefer the Nashville because of the coleslaw and sweet pickles that cut through some of the fattiness making you want more. Spicy butter, you can taste the butter and the mild sauce has a touch of sweetness that I like. I'm not a spicy eater, but the medium is very tolerable, if you like things hotter, do hot or higher. The fries are cut from real potatoes, but they do tend to go limp. Seasoned fries are more black pepper and cayenne flavored. read more
