We had breakfast at the Fremont Inn this morning, based on a recommendation from a local business. Would i recommend Fryemont to another person? Probably not. Our food came fairly fast. But it was pretty basic options. My biggest peeve would be the lack of coffee refill. I got to the bottom of my cup. The server never returned except to bring the ticket. Never offered a refill or asked how the food was. We always shop and buy local when we travel. But Fryemont won't be on that list again. read more

I am reviewing more than the restaurant as the Fryemont Inn is a beautiful package. This is our 3rd visit to the Inn. We love the intimacy of the Inn and the spirit of the past. Built in 1920, it is a throw back to another era. Wooden walls created from lumber from the smokies. Beautiful lobby and grounds that make you seem miles away from Byson City. When you are actually blocks away from the cutest town in North Carolina. We are treated like family, welcomed in the dining room and treated like family, in general. Since my husband and I seek out "restored historical bed and breakfasts or Inns" this is one of our favorites. Dinner and Breakfast are included with your stay. These meals are not the kind you find at a regular motel; these are cooked to order meals. Fruit, eggs, potatoes, grits, country ham, etc for breakfast and for dinner, oh wow. I have had lamb shank each time I have eaten here, and it is wonderful. One night I had prime rib, and I could cut it with a bread knife. My only regret is this. In the 40's and 30's trains used to bring people in to stay at the INN. The INN had a band and dancing, and people dressed up like a Bing Crosby movie. Every time I stay there, I feel that atmosphere. Sorry, no band. How do I know so much about the Fryemont? I read the walls and books of letters, menus and other such documentation that line the walls. One more thing, there is a small bar, and the bar tender looks, and I think acts like Bobby Knight. If you don't order your drink quickly enough, he might throw a chair at you. Kidding, he is good fun.. read more

Great home cooked food! Fresh food and the best blackened trout was the best I've ever had. We stayed at the inn in the suite and it was clean and we loved the people were so sweet and food tasted like Grandma had made it. Absolutely delicious! read more

Very old school hotel, interesting history but unfortunately in a terminal condition. Although staff which are charming locals try, the old and run down building is heavily relying on its rich history to draw in people. Food is cheap and of very poor quality and the bar only serves the cheapest liquor. A financial injection and serious overhaul is what this place needs, but the way it looks is that it will continue to do business until it can't do business no more and I suspect that once that happens will close forever. Our meal was perhaps the worst meal I had, maybe ever. Sadly cooked frozen veg, canned soup and potato pearls turned mash. Nursing home grub. Which was also the feel of the dining room, an old decrepit nursing home. Despite the nostalgic feelings this place evokes, I would eat and sleep somewhere else. The atmosphere was nice. The food was mediocre, OK, except not great and not worth the price.

We loved the food and ambiance at Freymont. We were not able to get a reservation but we were able to eat dinner in the bar. The bartender was fantastic at talking to us and helping us decide on the menu. We settled on the five course meal with Cajun prime rib. It was amazing. Tender and tasty. It came with sides and one of them was lima beans with ham. It was filled with chunks of real country ham. Not too salty. A stellar prime rib dinner with five courses for $36?? Fantastic deal. Yummy peach cobbler for dessert. Mom said the rolls were to die for. Keep in mind that this is a historic inn so it is not perfect but it has character. We enjoyed playing pool in between courses while we ate in the bar. This place has got to be one of the best kept secrets in Bryson. read more

I have read about The Fryemont for years but we were never in the area to go see it. My wife and I went for dinner. First we walked around the old inn. Its a wonderful old place with lots of character. Seems like it would be a nice place to stay. We went into the bar and had drinks before dinner. Sarge the bartender was fun and friendly. I had the Trout Hugo and my wife had the pork chop. Both were great and the shared vegetables were perfect. The desserts were very good. It was a very enjoyable meal. This place was highly recommended by a family member who in retrospect, I was reminded, has zero sense of good taste and hates most seasonings. Let me paint a picture: We were sat this evening after a mysterious amount of run around the last two days, in which we were denied a reservation the day before which built up a level of interest and excitement in how good this place must be, we looked eagerly to our feast. The first bad sign was being ignored for 20 minutes, till finally a server noticed that we hadn't even been offered a drink yet. This borough to mind the urging by staff over the last two days to come early and enjoy a drink ahead of time, which we can only assume now is so that you will be buzzed enough to not notice how mid the food really is. After getting our drinks and being served Mrs. Shuster's frozen aisle rolls we got our first of two "good" dishes of the evening; the "cheese soup" and then our sparse salads, which were the best part of the night. We ordered the Prime Rib (medium rare) and the Lemon Herbed Chicken. Both of which took a while to come out which was perfectly reasonable for something being cooked to order. These were served then the table side dishes arrived. The Prime Rib was a fine sized cut to be fair but lacked any actual flavor, it was served sitting in a shallow pool of Au Ju, the chicken dish was dry and served over a bed of rice which was actually ok and probably had the most seasonings of any dish this evening. The side dishes were awful, not only were the green beans undercooked, they still had stems on them and some had to be plucked apart to even try them, worst of all were the bland, hard slivered almonds simply thrown on top of them hard as could be. The "mushroom" dish I'll be honest we didn't even try and you probably wouldn't either it looked absolutely unappealing and mushy. Then the carrots, these were undercooked and still hard, and seemed to have been placed in a bowl with pancake syrup drizzled over the top, no flavor and no seasoning and still hard. We are not ones to ever complain and when our server checked up on us 20+ minutes after bringing us the food we mentioned a few of the aforementioned problems with the dishes including the flavorless prime rib to which she admitted the issues with the side dishes and offered to bring me a side of horseradish sauce for my beef. This admittedly made the prime rib palatable and I was able to finish it, the chicken being dry as could be my wife couldn't eat but a quarter of it and then when our bill came nothing was discounted not even when we refused dessert. All in all, we don't see the appeal of the dining room here and we were seriously considering coming to stay here as it is a very unique place full of interesting history and the staff do seem to be competent and kind. We left a generous tip (30% of the bill) so as to not offend our server who was pretty good overall and as it wasn't her fault in the least as far as the quality of the food went we didn't want to take it out on her. Seeing as we didn't get a break on the cost of this disappointing meal, I didn't hesitate to leave this review while still sitting on the front porch overlooking a gorgeous view of the Smokey Mountains. So in retrospect, come for the view and history of this place but not for the food, you will be very disappointed otherwise. read more

While I tried to set up this "new business" as the Fryemont Inn & Resort, it would only default back to the Fryemont Inn Dining Room. The Dining Room is only part of this historic and family owned/maintained resort. My buddies and I visited as part of a motorcycle vacation. The folks there are super friendly and go out of their way to make your stay great. The rooms themselves are a bit challenging. There's no air conditioning except for opening the windows in your room. Same for heating. There are some electric floorboard heaters. Not too much updating on anything including plumbing, electric, and especially the overall construction. They're just a bit above using skeleton keys to open doors. This resort does attract bikers (or should I say motorcycle enthusiasts). Not to worry. Everyone is here for a good time. When you arrive, there's a nice great room with a large open hearth/ fireplace, some chairs, tables, and couches. A couple of doors lead to the outdoor porch with more rocking chairs and tables. At a distance you can see the large swimming pool. Phone service and internet are challenging, but you're supposed to be disconnected from the outside world. That's why there are also no televisions in the rooms. The great room has games and puzzles. Back to the good ol' days. As far as dining, our food was included in the rate which was around $200 per night. Includes breakfast and dinner. The bar is located adjacent to the dining area. Sarge is the retired military/police dude who gets you your libations and can be amusing with his stories. He does make an excellent martini. For the dining, reservations are requested. The menu stays pretty much the same with the exception of their specials and desserts. There's something for everyone. The carnivores usually take the prime rib while the pescatores take the pecan crusted trout and vegetarians can have the pasta. There's even entertainment on weekends. My review is graded on a curve----- certainly not the best accommodations I've had nor is this the best food ever eaten, but if you close your eyes and go back 50-75 years, you'll realize probably not much has changed. As you pull up to the Inn, you feel like it's the backdrop of a movie scene: perched in a hill with tall overgrown hardwood trees, cypress', piney woods. It may 2 in the afternoon but it's dark because the foliage. And in the middle of all that is a structure of dilapidated wood paneling, moss infused sections and open windows with drapes partially opened gently blowing in the breeze. As you walk up the stone steps and enter the main lobby, you'll notice the sheer size of the door (not the screen door) giving you access to the Inn. You'll immediately notice to the left a huge porch with rocking chairs overlooking parts of Bryson City. Within the lobby across from the door is a huge fire place with large, oversize furniture in front. Slightly to the left is asitting area with a TV and small library. In the center is big table for socializing and gathering with friends, family or other guests. The check-in desk is just a small desk toward the back of the lobby with just a single desk space. To the right is a real small convenient shop with basic necessities and souvenirs. As you walk the long hallways you'll notice two (2) things: 1) the deep red carpet and 2) the uneven flooring. The hallways set the scene for a some spooky fun. The rooms are similarly situated with old furniture and fixtures. The rooms are dark, airy and very spacious. Old lanterns and dark flooring give the ambiance of the era in which the Inn was constructed. Don't expect a comfortable sleep or plush linens. But - this isn't a knock toward the amenities. It really adds to the overall environment of the Inn. The restaurant is a very large open space with plenty of room between guests. The service was outstanding from all the staff. The food was quite good and offered plenty of options for everyone to enjoy. The Inns grounds are amazing - almost left untouched other than modernizing parking and pouring a couple paths. And the landscaping is left to a minimum, almost undisturbed with the exception of near the cabins and the pathway leading to it. In all, the stay at the Inn was a fun family experience. While a little on the price side, it did come with dinner and breakfast which wouldhave easily ran up close to $150 or so. I highly recommend a stay at the Fryemont Inn. And don't let the spirts of Eugene get you! read more

The food just wasn't very good. Couldn't eat my white lettuce-laden salad and fish was fresh but barely seasoned. Friendly staff but mask wearing was not enforced as customers strolled through restaurant without them and even some staff. Some just wore face shield without mask. They do sanitize and wipe menus and tables between customers. Outdated decor matched the outdated menu. Drinks were ok though. Not as nice of a dinner as I'd hoped but Everett Inn was fully booked. read more

I truly feel terrible leaving this review. However I don't think it's fair to not speak MY truth about this Historical Hotel.....people need to know what to expect. Gorgeous grounds ......very poorly maintained .......amazing old building in desperate need of some restoration.....I'm a huge fan of historical architecture and have been in the design/ decorating business for over 30 years! Wow...ok, the Fryemont turns out to be a little more rustic than the web site photos would lead you to believe. But that doesn't change the fact that this is a quirky, classic, relaxing and fun place to use as a base from which to enjoy the nearby mountains. The restaurant emerged as a surprising winner with several great fresh trout dishes and an amazingly good prime rib...wonderfully seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium rare. Particular shout outs to manager Monica, waiter Zach, and above all barkeep Sarge, whose stories and drink making skills were casual and excellent all at the same time. Like taking the Wayback Machine to 1923...! This is a great old, nostalgic hotel. Very deservingly on the National Historic Register. This is old cool. We had a great time. Friendly people. Big rooms all with private baths. Comfy beds. We definitely slept well. No a/c, but we didn't need it up in to mountains. The pool is very nice. The front porch and rocking chairs are outstanding. Our rate included dinner and breakfast, and was a good value considering the nice steak and prime rib dinners available on the dinner menu (there were plenty of other choices too). Good bar and pool table. A very relaxing, peaceful, old cool place. I am confident we will return again and again. read more

The Inn side of Fryemont is very disappointing. It is not friendly to handicapped people or families with strollers. My room had roaming insects in the tub area and in the sleeping area. The water only trickled from the shower and the tub itself was very slippery and water backed up from the drain as I was showering. The walkway around the Inn is treacherous! It is completely unsafe for anyone with a walker, cane, or ever a casual stroll. The night clerk refused to check me out at the end of my stay. He said I would have to wait until 8am. for the day clerk to check out. I had to leave without a receipt for my payment and had to rely on my receipt to be delivered later by e-mail. The condition on the Inn and grounds reminds me of a cheap, roadside motel that has has been tended to properly is quite a while. I will not visit again. read more

Partner and I were in town for the 4th of July and wanted a sit down experience after walking the festival in town, we did not stay at the inn except to see walk around and get a feel. This is a place! It's so incredibly old, and not in a bad way (unless you are a fuddy duddy), you just have to appreciate it while acknowledging there will be some less than preferable aspects to the experience. The hosts and waitstaff deserve five stars (and why this is a four star review), they were very warm, welcoming, and informative, our waitress could not have been better. The menu and food fully represents the era this place likely peaked in. Steak and fish, salad + soup, family style sides with complimentary desert. Our prime rib, trout, and desserts (all homemade) were the highlights, we were not a fan of the soup, salad, nor any of the sides (corn casserole, potatoes, broccoli) served to us but that's ok. The general dearth of food options throughout the Smokies, and the character this place maintains make it worth a visit. read more

How this place has only 3.5 stars is a mystery to me. We dined as a group of 6, including 2 tweens. The staff was so friendly and accommodating and the food was phenomenal! I had a braised lamb shank that was just amazing, and the other adults had different trout dishes (Fryemont's specialty) which were also just fantastic! Not to be missed were the sides of corn pudding and "supreme" mashed potatoes, also great, and almost left me without room for dessert-but it's dessert after all, right? We arrived at 6:45 PM without reservations. The hostess told us that we could either have dinner in the bar or wait until the 7:30 PM dinner sitting. When I asked why we couldn't be seated in the dining room with so many open tables, the hostess said they had a lot of reservations for later and that they only had 3 servers. We have dined at the Fryemont Inn before and the food and service were fine, although the dining room had about the same number of diners as last night - about half full. I couldn't find a listing for the Fryemont Inn - only the dining room. We stayed here recently for 2 nights. We have stayed here in the past and enjoyed our visits. This particular visit was a bit different. The dining room staff was very friendly and service was good. Our food here was also delicious. The rooms do not have TVs so it was nice to sit around the fire and talk to other guests, work on puzzles, read and just relax. However, when we went to the room, we turned on the light in the bathroom and saw a roach. We informed the front desk of this. Later that evening, we turned down the sheets to go to bed and there was another roach in the bed. The next morning, we informed the front desk of this as well. We were told that due to the cold weather, they (the roaches) were coming inside to find warmer temperatures. The morning of our checkout, we turned on the light in the bathroom and found yet another roach on the floor. When we checked out, we informed the front desk again of our "findings". We understand that these are hard to control and suggested they find another exterminator. We had planned on bringing friends with us on our next trip to Bryson City, but now we can no longer recommend staying at the Inn. This is unfortunate as we do enjoy the "peacefulness", but will look for other accommodations in the future. read more

We have been coming to this "back in time" inn for 30 years. Yes, it does not have A/C but you really do not need it. yes, IT IS OLD! THAT IS THE DAMN POINT. Has some use on the old girl. IT IS NOT MODERN. GO TO THE DAMN HOLIDAY INN IF THATS what you want. This place is where you go to go back in time. To where people talked instead of looking at your damn phone. It is where kids played SKITTLE, or did a puzzle, or even read a book. Come here and give your children and yourself a real last feel for yesteryear. Very few places like this. We've been enjoying the Fryemont for a lot of years. We were unable to get an air-conditioned room so stayed at the Sleep Inn across the street. Joined friends for dinner on Friday & Saturday night. Their menu is online so you can check out their entrees. Had the blackened trout both nights and wasn't disappointed either night. The family style sides were a little disappointing on Sat nite as I'm not a fan of carrots. It would be better if they offered 4 sides instead of 3 and allowed guests to chose their sides. Peach cobbler was excellent. The servers are attentive. All in all, they didn't disappoint. read more

Fantastic service. Every employee we came across in our 3 1/2 days there went above and beyond. Food was very good. Overall it seems a little expensive. I love the lobby: the games and puzzles. The front porch with rocking chairs. The setting was spectacular. Wish they would fix some of the doors so they shut easier: The bathroom doors of our suite did not shut, needed to be leveled. This is perfect for a single person traveling alone, couple romantic get away, families with young children, retired couples, just about anyone could enjoy this place. If you're looking for something rustic, this is definitely the place. There was no air conditioning, no tv and we showered in a claw-foot tub with a moldy shower curtain from about 1983. The bed was extremely hard and you could hear every guest in the place through the walls. Sinks are in your room and you won't see any modern hotel amenities like a hair dryer or fridge and wall sockets are hard to come by (we had to unplug our sole lamp to charge our phones.) the staff was very friendly and they keep boardgames in the common room for entertainment but I still got the heebie jeebies from the place. read more

Didn't stay at the Inn but did eat at the restaurant. Four courses for one price. I had the Prime Rib for $28.00. The food is awesome and very filling. We had a steak, and two trout dishes, all were excellent. Sides were family style (baked apples, mac and cheese and lima beans), as well as bread. We each had a different dessert, all were very good. Opted for one of the Suite rooms as I really felt my wife and I would need a/c in late June. Room was clean and comfortable. The mattress was extremely comfortable and was one of the best I have slept in while traveling. The hotel has kept the 1920's feel to it and the non occupied rooms are left open so you can have a look while walking to the dining room. They were a lot cooler than I had anticipated considering it was over 90 degrees outside and if you appreciate rustic charm they would be a great selection. Of particular note was the size of the swimming pool which was probably double the size of many larger chain hotels who also have many more guests. The hotel price included dinner and breakfast. We both had the trout which was very well prepared. The sides were a little disappointing however and there was no choice with these. They are thee items that they select each night and they come with every entree. The breakfast was enjoyable and I have no complaints there. read more

We completely enjoyed a relaxing Fourth of July. The Inn has personality that just won't stop, and the staff has even more. This was our first stay, we met couples and families who have been coming for years and decades - they told us story after story. Their children have grown up at The Fryemont and now their grandchildren are growing up vacationing at The Fryemont. Friends had bragged on the restaurant menu and we were truly not disappointed! The pecan crusted trout was a favorite. The side dishes served family style are a nice touch in the dining room with an oversized fire place. I especially liked the "mushroom business" and the soup selections. The evening specials were fresh and very tasty. Breakfast offered a nice selection as well. Delicious fruit, grits and bacon for my dairy and GF diet. Coffee is available throughout the day in the lobby, welcoming you to sit and enjoy the front porch rocking chairs. Or the HUGE fireplace in the lobby - oh how I wish it had been chilly enough to light a fire! I am already looking forward to the next time my husband and I can get away for a return visit with and without children! read more
