Nice menu. We decided upon the Mr Miyagi sandwich and the orange chicken. Both dishes were quite flavorful and had superbly crunchy chicken. Unfortunately while there was a nice amount of chicken in some chunks, others were almost entirely breading. Same with the sandwich...about 2/3 the sandwich had great tasting chicken and the other 1/3 was all breading. I had a friend tell me this was the best chicken sandwich he'd ever had. So I tried it. On lunch from work, came to try it out. I brought it back halfway through because I noticed the chicken was a little pink and translucent. When I brought it back to the cart, the cook came out front and said that it's fully cooked. Then continued to fight with me about it, even ripped the chicken open to show me more pink, and tell me that it was fully cooked. I've worked in restaurants a long time...I've been a cook. My first job in restaurants was as a cook in an organic farm to plate restaurant. When organic dark meat chicken is fully cooked, it looks pink. I got a lot of complaints about that, and I explained that to people. When they weren't COMFORTABLE eating it, I had no problem making another plate for them, because that's customer service. And that was me as a cook... So when I asked the cook what kind chicken it was, she said chicken breast. Is it organic? She said no. When she insisted it was fully cooked, I said ok, so when I get salmonella, should I just come back and let you know? And she said, "YEAH. But you won't, because it's fully cooked." I. Was. Floored. She then went on to say that if I didn't like her food, then she could give me a refund. I was speechless! I just stared at her and eventually said, "look, I'm not attacking you or your cooking. I don't usually do this. But if I'm not comfortable eating something--" "Then you have 2 options. I can give you a refund, or I can make you a new one. What would you like?" Man...I probably should've just gotten a refund, but I only had 30 mins for my break, and I was starving. So I asked for another one. The cashier was sitting behind her for all of this, and he was so embarrassed. When she walked away, he whispered "sorry" to me and I just shrugged. He ended up walking the food out to me when it was ready, which didn't include the two pot stickers that were in the first box that I'd brought back, and apologized again. Sadly, the sandwich wasn't even that good...the chicken is battered and came out in 2 pieces, one of which was mostly breading. I really wish there was at least some redemption there. read more

I ordered medium spicy and when I tell yall, accidentally bit into a pepper pod (oh god the HEAT LOL!) The heat aside, this dish was delicious. It was made timely, and the price was decent for the amount of food that it all came with. I loved all the clean tables and the trash areas that were labeled for multiple different uses. Bento box is good but could use something and it's a little small, portion size for a boy or woman. It's crispy and fatty with the thick batter and mayo sauce, the zucchinis and little bit of lime help lighten it up but it needs more to cut the fat, like maybe pickled diakon radish. read more

Fried chicken sandwich is really disappointing. Just a small, thin, over-cooked piece of white chicken inside a huge amount of tasteless fried dough inside a crispy fried crust. Inside a big bun of tasteless baked white dough. All just bland, fried, and flavorless, zero vinegar tang or spice to cut through all that fried flour. Yum! Hooray to this place for offering quality, fresh tasting food...and Kimchi! Love it! Had a special Larb Poke Tuna Bento for $8 and added kimchi for $2. Delighted! I liked that it had arugula instead of lettuce. The service was friendly and the speed was average to quick for a food cart. Only con was the rice was slightly overcooked. Their entire menu looks amazing, featuring various Asian-inspired sandwiches, salads and bentos. Looking forward to trying more in the future. Met up with some friends here and debated which cart to pursue. All of us ended up here. We had the oven roasted chicken bento and crispy chicken bento ($7 each). Considering there was just one guy manning the cart, our 4 bentos came out quite quickly. I asked for both sauces and was happy with that choice. The oven roasted chicken was very moist and tender. The crispy chicken was perfectly crispy with nice lean white meat. There were also some veggies to round out the meal. A good amount of food for the price! read more

I give this cart 3.5 stars. Got the fried chicken sandwich, which looked really good when I got it. But by the time I was eating it at home, roughly 10-15 minutes later, it was soggy. Best Asian food cart!! Hands down the best bowls to go, variety of food offered and incredible selection even for allergies. They have wonderful and efficient service. They are reasonably priced and very filling. Favorite go to is the chicken bowl with an option of teriyaki or sweet chili. I dont know if the lunch special is different but it used to come with a potsticker which was nice. The variety of drinks is nice and you can't go wrong with any dish. We're fortunate to have the food carts near where we live and this is one for d my husband's regular lunch choices and he will get the Miyagi sandwich. For me it tastes gods for the first three bites but then just has WAY too much beading. We have tried the ramen which is fine, the orange chicken, which again is too heavily breaded/fried. Thankfully I was able to get the Miyagi grilled instead which made me sooo much happier and feel less guilty considering the sandwich is accompanied by chips and gyoza. The avocado that comes with the sandwich is wonderful and they give a generous amount. Definitely recommend going grilled. read more

YES Phat Cart! I moved to the west side after being a long-time PSU student while living on the east side. Everywhere I went had good food, but now I've been so worried to find that I have placed myself in a food desert. While that may be true for my immediate neighborhood (I'm looking at you, West Portland Park), just a couple of miles north lies the Hillsdale food cart along with PHAT CART which I went to every week for the zillion years I was at PSU. I was nervous that somehow the quality would be different but no fear! The Phat Cart team does amazing things. Try the Larb Gai Tod, especially if you like spice-- it's under rated. And the fried chicken is breaded and fried to perfection; you can't get anything like it anywhere else. The only sad thing to report is that while Phat Cart no longer officially hands out punch cards, they still honor them at the downtown location but the nice lady working at the Hillsdale location turned mine away because it's expired :( tell that to the owner and long time employees who served me downtown? read more

We were very impressed by this cart today. We had the Hawaiian bento which was yummy and had a lot of meat and we also had the chicken sandwich which was super good! Typically Phat Cart provides wonderful and timely service, but with this visit I was sorely disappointed. The kid taking our order seemed very indifferent (which isn't that big of a deal but still noted) and proceeded to lose our order ticket. The Mr. Miyagi sandwich is supreme! Get it with hot sauce, it really balances out the sweet sauce they use. The pot stickers are good, but very heavily sauced if you get the kind with all the bells and whistles. My only complaint is that the staff seems very uninterested in their jobs. They take your order with no hello, no conversation, barely looking up from playing on their phones. Also, I once called in my order and had a question about what a menu item was, and the staff could not understand me, i.e. I said what is in the X? and she said you want to order X? This was repeated about 5 times until I gave up and just ordered it not knowing what it was. When you serve fusion food, people are going to have questions and the staff should be able to answer them. read more

My favorite (by a thin margin) of the carts on this very pleasant corner. They share an outdoor seating area which is a real bonus. My favorite dish here is the Hawaiian bento, more redolant of Japanese street food than Oahu or Maui but nonetheless excellent. The pork was very juicy and just a bit salty, perfect to eat with rice. The zuchini and pineapple were perfect with this, too, and all topped with a squiggle of Japanese mayo that really makes the dish. I recommend asking for "lite on the mayo" if you want the savory flavors to stand out more. This cart has a lot of interesting choices and someday I want to get through the menu! read more

I ordered three Korean Beef Bentos for $10 each. My initial impression was this is way overpriced. The beef is actually mostly bones, with a small amount of seasoned meat sticking to most of the pieces. There was a spoonful of spicy kimchee, several thick slices of zucchini, all placed over white rice in a bowl and topped with minced green onions. Had this been priced lower, I would have been happy. This should have been $7.50 at the most. Then, to top it off, I ordered the delivery through Postmates. DON'T USE POSTMATES!!! They charged over $54 to my card for this $30 food order with free delivery. UPDATE: Postmates claims that Phat Cart is not one of their partners, and so additional fees are charged. For my first time I'd give my food choice a solid 3 stars. The menu looks great and varied, something for everyone. I didn't dive into the more adventurous or flavorful options as I was craving something simple, so I went with the roasted chicken bento and a side of chicken dumpling (pot stickers). Pretty plain, the chicken was dry and the zucchini was over cooked, the pot stickers were flavorful and well cooked. I frequent this food cart pod and was disappointed I didn't go with my standard from another cart. I might give it another shot and try something with more flavor potential. read more

The orange chicken was really good. No gristle or excess fat. It was clearly not frozen because it was ready in 5 minutes. Light and crispy, sweet and tangy. We also tried the roti, a pan fried dough with vanilla custard. That was a new experience for me and it was delicious! I've only tried the chicken avocado salad here. It was tasty, and next time I might go for the grilled chicken or tofu instead of the breaded/fried chicken.
