We stumbled by this place as we were looking for a place to finish the evening off at. The place is unique in how the interior is set up with multiple dining area as well as an enclosed patio. I belief the owner was the one working this day and was super nice to us as we decided on what we wanted to do. We ended having a couple of drinks and ordered the special - steak and shrimp plate to share. The food was decent, but the experience was great. I just recalled I was killed bd ofannoyed after I ate here a couple of times ago, so I'll revise: My opinion now is... AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH, YESSSSSSS, My Precioussssss. :) I just ate a bowl full of ahi tuna poke with lovely sticky rice, sautéed chopped cabbage-broccoli'n'carrots, and a little cup of nice sweet molasses-y sort of gluten-free tamari-tasting sauce, and my mouth, my whole face and my stomach are happy as-- well, as a stuffed clam. :) Ohhh! it was so good... every beautiful cube of fresh pink tuna, every hot spoonful of rice, every crunchy wedge of cabbage -- they all made up a perfect simple dish of bright complementary flavors. It smelled so good in the little beachy driftwood-shack-style cabin when I went to pick up my takeout order, that despite the cold, I opened the cardboard carton on my way home and started popping fish and vegetables into my mouth by hand as I walked. The food warmed and happied me so much that I even turned back and went a few extra times around the block, letting the joyful salad snapping between my teeth make up for my shivering fingers. I finished my dinner snuggled under a quilt with my little cat looking on longingly, expecting to have a bite or two at the end as usual, but I just couldn't do it -- every bite was too precious! Poor thing had to make do with some grains of rice and the dregs of that sweet sauce, which wasn't really her thing. Sorry, Kitty, I know I got the best of that deal by far and I promise you can have some yogurt with dinner. Overpriced for small portioned mediocre food. It's was about $13 for a plate of rice, 2 finger size cuts of halibut, a couple leaves of salad and a random tiny slice of watermelon. The cost for what you get should really be $6-8 at most since they're serving about a kindergarten size amount of food. Not only that, the wait for our food took forever. which the owner chalked it up to, "focusing on the food, not the service." If you have no other options for food then I guess this place is ok. But if you actually care about having a good meal you should go elsewhere. read more

A Multnomah Village favorite for grab-and-go dinners. When I walked in the first time, I was welcomed to the "smallest sports bar in Portland, or so I'm told" by one of the regulars. With four indoor stools for diners, I think he may be right. Both my husband and I are big fans of their healthy bento meals. It is actually the best meal I've had in Multnomah Village and the one that makes me feel good after dining. Portions are not oversized and they've nailed that magical combination of healthy and delicious. The basis of the bento meals are high quality meat and fish options, although tofu and chicken are offered (http://www.thehutpdx.com/menu/). I can't pass up the lamb when it is on the specials menu and Mr. K is a tri-tip man. Your choice of white or brown rice and the vegetables remain crisp (not overcooked) and I love the kick of their special sauce. Although you have to wait a bit for your food, I consider this a good thing. Beer and wine are served and I don't mind passing the time watching and talking football with the owner and staff. I realize that $12 for bento is a bit pricy, but it doesn't seem outrageous considering the quality of the meal. read more

I really want to return his place but I probably won't. As is noted in many other reviews the portion size per price is not appropriate. We paid $36 for two small boxes of food. My wife and I did not feel the value was there at all. Quality is good, but no value. I suggest taking a look at your prices especially considering today's environment. If you're looking for a heavy, teriyaki bowl, Village Hut is not for you. Daily there is a choice of chicken, or pork. There are 5 + daily specials depending on what the owner gets from the market that morning. Great fresh seafood options, and meat options like filet mignon, or lamb. The proteins are grilled, and served over a bed of Jasmine, or Brown Rice. There is a fantastic Asian slaw on the side, and some fruit for desert. The owner is super friendly. Happened to be passing through Portland and mentioned that after several nights of dining out featuring beef, I was in the mood for Halibut of all things. Found this hidden gem on Yelp and made the trek to tiny Multoma village to check it out. We were greeted right from the tiny kitchen by owner and chef J. He said they were really busy but if we don't mind waiting he would love to cook us dinner. So knowing there was a brewpub next door to check out I said sure thing. We were not disappointed. The halibut was fresh and perfectly cooked with a special seasoning that I am going to have to figure out for the future. My family also ordered the blackened salmon and the steak and shrimp. The steak was actually better than a recent steak house adventure. What gives? Turns out J just wants to deliver a nice affordable fresh meal that isn't saturated with salt. Indeed, not huge portions but freshness and quality for the price in a quaint environment. Even the other mostly local clientele were friendly and welcoming. Overall a very delightful experience. Everything is rationed out and not really designed to satisfy your hunger, and this hides beneath the guise that the food is healthy and fresh. Honestly you're probably better off buying yourself a pound of salmon and cooking a cup of rice. The owner is just skimping you. My wife and I had a wonderful meal there. I had the king salmon and my wife had the halibut. Both were cooked exactly to our specifications. An added bonus is that they had private rooms so we felt extremely safe eating there. (See photo.) The staff were amazing, kind and accommodating; they made us feel right at home. The positive reviews here are baffling... I was warned by countless people not to ever go to the Village Hut because it was, in their words, "literally the worst food in Portland!" but I'm not that much of a food snob and thought people were simply exaggerating... boy was I wrong! First, it is a cute place, and walking distance to where I live, so I was actually excited about this. When I went in, it was not crowded, only one person there, a friend of the owner, and the owner himself behind the counter. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Salmon bento with brown rice. The first warning sign should have been when I saw him take out the frozen piece of a salmon and take it into the back patio, where they have the microwave! After about 10 minutes he then asked again, "what kind of rice, white or brown?" I said brown and he whipped that up in 60 seconds, threw the microwaved salmon - that was "cooked" barely to room temperature and completely dried out - on with two rotten apple wedges and a dash of flavorless cole slaw... Worst food I've EVER had in Portland! Seriously. Having to give it at least one star is more than the Village Hut deserves... Portland is supposed to be a foodie town, so how anyone could make such dreadful microwaved crap here (and charge $14 for it!?) and still stay in business is beyond me, but I will never be going back to Village Hut again! And that makes me sad, as I was really hoping to find a cool little place within walking distance that I could enjoy. I should have heeded the warnings though, and SO SHOULD YOU! read more

Sorry to rain on the locals' parade but if all I want is brown rice (can be made ahead of time) and grilled fish (shouldn't take more than 6 minutes each side) I should NOT have to wait for 40 minutes. Oh, and did I mention that there were only 2 people ahead of us? I get laid back and low key but one of the components of the food service industry is service. Yes, the girls were nice but after 30 minutes when my husband went in to say, "What's up?" they asked what we had ordered. Spacy is not good in a restaurant. Additionally, if the food had been amazingly flavored and interesting then I would not feel so put out but seriously....it is a piece of grilled fish. I can do that at home. Calling it an Asian fusion place is a bit misleading- there's no fusion. Plus, it's not inexpensive- another factor that would lead me to expect more. Two standouts- the coleslaw was bright and fresh with great flavor as was the sauce that accompanied the meal. Unfortunately, the sauce comes in a thimble so you can't even cover your fish with it. Went there about 3 weeks ago around like, 830- I was starving. To the Village Hut's defense, it's not their fault that within the last 1.5 hours of closing all they had left was the chicken, and maybe some beef. However, the food wasn't anything in my opinion I couldn't find by ordering a bento at another place down the road. My chicken, steamed brown rice and asian slaw were all decent, I did appreciate that the asian slaw was actually sliced apples and not drenched in sauce. No diet coke beverage choices, just regular...man, I was craving a coke. My meal arrived with the last 2 slices of chicken being very over cooked- so much I could not chew them, and I do not like wasting food ;) The service, or lack thereof, pushed me to say aloud "We are not coming back here": -No greeting when we walked in from the high school-aged girl. She did see us enter, too. -No "Do you have any questions about the menu?" etc. She just stood there and stared at us. It was waaaay weird. I wanted to like, run out with my hands in the air. -When we did finally order, she told us to take a seat anywhere, but if we could stay closer that would be preferred. Mind you, we were the ONLY people in this tiny establishment to begin with. -After dropping off our meals, I wanted to ask for salt... but she immediately headed back inside behind the counter to probably see if her BFFE had replied to her text. Bottom line, it was very clear she was more interested in her phone than us- and the food was not so impressive to warrant me risking changing my opinion thus far. Maybe if I go with a group next time at say, 5pm, I would have better luck. I'm fine not returning though. read more

The Village Hut serves the healthy, fresh food that I often crave but don't necessarily eat often enough. On a recent trip the special wild salmon bento with stir fried veggies was heaven on a plate. Especially after spending the afternoon walking around the village, "studying" in Starbucks, and working up an appetite. Salmon, brown rice and vegetables are just fundamentally satisfying. The opportunity to eat such hearty, healthy food and enjoy a beautiful sunny day on the patio was very welcome. I could take or leave the asian slaw and the special sauce that comes on the side. One is too bitter, the other too spicy. I don't care for the dark meat used in the chicken bento so I think I'll stick to the seafood options in the future, even though they're more expensive. It's a great place for lunch, and I have never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes for food. read more

I really hate to give bad reviews to local shops, but this place is definitely asking for it. Despite a sign saying Now We Are Cooking by the front door, my experiences here proved the opposite is true, I am afraid. Came here twice. The first time, the owner served my food. He was chatty and pleasant, going off about the Beavs and all. The food was, interesting. I had Carlton Pulled Pork. It tasted like it had been previously cooked, kept in the fridge uncovered and reheated in a microwave right before serving. I suppose if one is going to do that, the least one can do is to keep the food tightly covered inside the fridge, so the flavor does not change as it is being kept cold, but no luck here. Still, I was willing to give it a second chance, but this time, I had something else. A teenager was manning the shop and I noticed this time that indeed the food was kept in a fridge under the counter, where it was pulled out from right before nuking. I can't remember what I had, it was so regrettable. So there you have it. I am pretty darned picky about my food, and I assume you are too about yours. Hence, I certainly cannot recommend this place in good conscience, much as I would like to, particularly since the food here is advertised as freshly cooked by the sign outside the door when in reality it just isn't. read more

The Village Hut is a nice change and different kind of place for the SW neighborhood restaurants. This place is not a dressy formal place, and this place absolutely not a fast food chain. It's a casual cozy restaurant that serves organic and healthy food with affordable price. I had the lamb plate that came with rice, coleslaw, and fruit. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked to my taste. The rice and coleslaw were good side dishes for this meal. The price tag for my dinner was $10 and it was a full meal. I also tried my sister's scallop and it was amazing. The scallop was sweet and juicy. It was just perfect and I will get that next time. They have a nice outdoor seating and there was a guy who played music when we were there. It made me feel like I was not in SW Portland. The owner was nice and friendly. We had a good dinner there and we will be back for a visit to this hut, very very soon. read more

Best food in the village! No really it is that good. Seared tuna, and scallops on rice (brown or white of course). Great veggies too. The meats are always great and the people there are so damn friendly its hard not to go back day after day. Beer, wine and sodas for drinks are all you need and sometimes they have freshly baked desserts to finish it off. Oh and there is usually a bit of mango thrown in (canned or something it is so good). Decent food although it's definitely not cheap, the wait is too long, and they use lots of garlic so I would advise against eating here before you go out anywhere. What a cute place- and if you think you've had "bento" at one of those crappy teriyaki places you are in for a serious treat. Everything was super fresh- I got the halibut bento with fresh caught halibut, brown rice, asian slaw (no mayo), and a nice wedge of watermelon. The sauce they use is not your typical teriyaki sauce, it is really nice with a little kick that was not too spicy for my son, who loved his shrimp bento. Ithink there were about a dozen proteins to choose from, including painted hills beef, pulled pork, St. Louis ribs, several types of seafood, and of course chicken. What a fabulous find! The owner/chef buys fresh every day. My friend and I got the same dish, a mixed seafood dish of coho, salmon and shrimp served over jasmine rice (brown rice also an option). Ambiance gets 5 Stars and the owner seems cool. I tried the Halibut as they were out of the Tri-Tip; very fresh and flaky. As a few Yelpers have mentioned, the portions of fish are a bit small, but overall a decent sized plate for $14 when you factor-in the delicious brown rice and sautéed vegetables.
