CrossFit initially scared the crap out of me. Then I signed up for the 4 week bootcamp for beginners and the nightmares stopped. I thought I had to go into CrossFit already knowing what I was doing, but luckily I was proven wrong. Coach Kyle took the time to make sure we all understood the fundamental skills of various lifts, encouraging us on what we did well and making suggestions and corrections for what wasn't quite right. I'm still far from a pro CrossFit-er but definitely learned a thing or two over those 4 weeks and have continued to improve over the past 2 months with help from coaches and teammates. The coaches and owners at FWCF also really encourage a team atmosphere. I thought I would constantly feel self conscious not lifting as much or being as good as other people, but if someone finishes a WOD 2 minutes before me, they just spend those 2 minutes cheering me on. Coach Kyle does his best to create creative holiday WODs (Zombie Apocalypse for Halloween, Thanksgiving Dinner, and who knows what he has in store for Christmas!) and we are encouraged to come together for both CrossFit events (Barbells for Boobs) and non-CrossFit events (Cupid's Undie Run, Climb for Air). I find myself constantly challenged and never bored. I can't imagine giving up CrossFit or going to another box. I could continue on, but no one cares to read an obscenely long review. People react in different ways when they hear the word CrossFit. Some are quick to say that "I could never do that." Some admit they've heard the name but don't know what it is. I was in the latter category before I attended my first free community class (every Saturday at 9am) at Ft Wright CrossFit. Attending one class is enough to see the friendships and community that exists. Attending one class is enough to see that it will challenge you regardless of your starting fitness level. The coaches are welcoming and knowledgeable. They personalize each workout and provide guidance and encouragement. They help you realize that the only person that you are competing against is who you were last week, last month, last year. I hadn't worked out in 7 years after having 3 babies and I decided it was time to make a change. I had tried so many different regimens and videos but couldn't stick with anything. 2 years later and not only do I WANT to go 5 times a week but if I miss a day I'm sad about it! I've lost 10 lbs and replaced fat with lean muscle. The coaches are knowledgeable and truly care about form and performance. The gym is run by an outstanding couple and their drive to support responsible and successful athletes is second to none. I've visted many a Crossfit and there is no comparison! I could write a book on this place. I've always wanted to be fit and healthy but I could never quite stick with it so I decided to try CrossFit at FWCF. Almost 3 years later, here I am healthier & happier than I've ever been. It's not just the workouts I love, it's also the atmosphere this place creates. The coaches are amazing people, not just coaches and it spreads to the members. Trust me, anyone can do this, the coaches will cater to your every need no matter what it is. I had always been so intrigued by CrossFit but never had the guts to give it a try. Now almost a three years after I joined FWCF, I can't believe I waited so long! You won't find a lot of traditional gym equipment at Ft. Wright CrossFit, but what you will find is an exceptional coach who will teach you the right way to do your workout and will adjust your workout to your abilities. I'm not going to lie, the workouts are intense, but you will be getting the very most out of your workout in the least amount of time. I was a runner and had never done any weightlifting, so I was a little nervous to try cross fit 3 years ago. The coaches were so welcoming and the community immediately made me feel like I had always been there. The part about FWCF I like the best is the constant going back to basics to ensure your techniques are correct when lifting. Every workout includes a review of the moves and proper warmup. Ft Wright CrossFit is one of the most welcoming gyms and offers fitness for all ages! From kids class, to Zone (more HIIT style), to CrossFit, they are always growing and adapting to what best fits the members. It is one of the cleanest gyms I've ever been in and has a kids room for children to play while parents workout. I have been a member of this amazing box for a little over 2 years now. It is welcoming, adaptive to your needs and still pushes you to do your best in every workout. My FAVORITE part of the day. An hour at this place and I'm good to go. I used to go to LA Fitness and be there for 1-2 hours (seeing minimal results). The guided workouts at FWCF are short, high intensity, and supervised by well trained coaches.
