I had previously briefly tried a CrossFit gym elsewhere and had not enjoyed it and quit due to injury. I like Power Performance for the coaching (which challenges you while scaling to accommodate your limitations), the community (a lot of nice people), and a very positive environment. The two owners (Larry and Alicia, a married couple) take pride in their business and both coach classes regularly. This is not an intimidating place; it is friendly and encouraging. I was intimidated to try CrossFit again, but I shouldn't have been about Power Performance! I've noticed that people from other gyms who "drop-in" to work out always have positive things to say about this gym. In the beginning, I did "on-ramp" with Larry, which is series of sessions to teach you the exercises you need to participate in class. I didn't need all the on-ramp sessions due to the bit of weight lifting I had done, and I moved into regular classes and was off and running. Since then, I've gotten stronger, more flexible, and made some new friends. This gym is a part of the community and participates in things like food drives and has social events. When the gym had to close for COVID, they loaned out their equipment to their membership. When the gym comes up in conversation with friends, I always recommend Power Performance!

The instructors are always nice and motivating during my classes. They never make you feel like you're not doing enough in the class. Everyone is welcoming! Even if you don't run there are plenty of people who walk during the class as well. Danielle's classes are the best! I recommend trying it out and you'll love it!

They opened in the middle of the pandemic, but that really has not stopped their growth of clientele. I'll start with safety. Everyone is spaced out and has their own machines and dumbbells to use. They do a cleaning after each class and you have to wear your mask to move about the class or be in any other space of the building. I have always felt very safe while in there and I am one who is definitely paranoid about the virus. Now, moving on to the workouts. It's basically a high intensity work out for an hour. You spend 15 minute increments on the floor with weights and on the treadmill- two times for each. No class is the same and no instructor is the same. I love that because you're getting a different experience every time you walk in the door. Your body will constantly be challenged because of this also. I will say that each instructor is very motivating and great at pushing you to be your best you inside and outside of the classroom. None of that "earn what you eat" mess. That's the number one thing that keeps me coming back. I've been to a lot of other gyms in the city and this one takes the cake. Check them out!

I don't remember what my first workout was, but I do remember hearing it and thinking "How do I get…read moreout of here?" I thought I was a goner. But it turns out that when I (or anyone) can't do the workout of the day as "prescribed", the workout can be modified. The point is to push yourself and the coaches know all the great ways to "scale" a workout to meet the athlete where they're at (whether due to strength, flexibility, or injury-related limitations) and while still employing the intended stimulus of the workout (like by doing jumping pull-ups rather than regular pull-ups; or ring rows rather than jumping pull-ups; or nearly-standing ring rows rather than ring rows; etc.). In the nearly 3 years I've been going there, the focus on "constantly varied" exercises, along with plenty of focus on nutrition (not in the classes, per se, but through challenges and general conversations), has enabled me to drop about 40 pounds of weight and 6" to 8" of waist-line, and am still continuing the effort! Also in those three years: I conquered the climbing rope; I can almost string together multiple "double-unders" (jump rope going under your feet twice in a single jump); took about 2:30 - 3:00 off of my 1 mile run time; nearly achieved a 400 pound deadlift; and so much more! Plus, I've made friends and have also done "drop-ins" at other CrossFit gyms when traveling (in the U.S. and other countries) and find the global community to be nearly as welcoming as CrossFit Cincinnati has always been. Being able to get off the couch without bracing myself against pain in my knees, being able to squat down to pick up after my dog or to manage laundry using my front-loading washer and dryer, being able to kneel and get a good bow in my shoelace, being able to serve as "muscle" for my wife who needs bags of dirt and other heavy-and-sometimes-awkward items moved around so she can do the gardening she likes to do, being able to go up stairs without getting winded... All of this (and more) has come from CrossFit and the terrific (and caring) coaches at CrossFit Cincinnati!

My wife dragged me, kicking and screaming, into a CrossFit box and I was immediately hooked. It's actually like joining a tribe of people passionate about seeking ultimate fitness and pushing themselves to their limits. We travel a lot for our children's sports and recently found ourselves in Cincinnati. My wife found a box, made a call, and we dropped into this specific CrossFit. Everyone went over the top to make us feel welcome and Rainer provided corrections as if we were members of his crew. We can't say enough about the hospitality we received at this location and we will stop by again next year during soccer season. We HIGHLY recommend this box! We even purchased shirts to show appreciation and to show support for such a wonderful group of athletes. Keep up the good work team and thank you for taking us in.

However, when Tyler sent out the invitations to the Behind The Dream events this month I realized this is a perfect opportunity to shine some light on an awesome local business. Here's my experience with The Body Shop: I have been there one time. I have never participated in a group class or paid for a private trainer. I workout religiously next door, I have been going there for long enough I'd have a damn master's degree. People have come and gone from this space, and other than the occasional parking issue, I've never really gave it much mind. Despite that I know one thing for a fact from my one experience: It's a five star place, with five star staff. Why? Because then two weeks ago the power was out at my gym and I knocked on the door for The Body Shop at 630am, in the cold and rain, and asked if I could START my workout there. It wasn't even an issue, instantly Jeff said "Sure come on in" and gave me whatever space I needed, even pulled out a jump rope for me to warm up (I had my own) and asked if I needed anything. I was content to sit in my corner and go try the gym door every now and then, he instead offered me full use to actually workout with whatever/however I needed, he'd be there until 9. Honestly, I'm a bit of a jerk and just went ahead and took him up on it and made myself at home. I started with warm up deadlifts and then went to the squat rack, as Jeff worked with a small group of ladies getting a tough early morning session in. Here's where it gets dope: The dude saw my squat form (poor), and offered me some help. Now he didn't walk over and say "STOP WHAT YOURE DOING LET ME SAVE YOU", he approached me as someone that knows his stuff, to help someone that didn't, without an ego or attitude. He then, while still running the class and making sure everyone was getting the workout they needed and paid for, proceeded to breakdown my squat form, help me improve it, and give me one on one coaching/training to continue to fix it. I finished my workout there, having been there for a few hours at that point, and he (and the other trainer that came in, who I never met), was nothing but courteous and polite the whole time. I want to reiterate this: I never gave this shop anything but the wonderful grace of my presence (not worth a whole lot I assure you), and Jeff went out of his way multiple times to take care of me and help me out. I came back a few days later to reiterate my thanks and he looked at me, slightly befuddled, and said "it's really not a big deal man." I still find it damn cool of him, and am still working to un-screw my squat form now. I can't tell you if the classes are amazing, I can tell you they have great space, they have insulated the hell out of it compared to when we were in there, and they have all the knowledge and expertise you could want in a gym. But more importantly they have the right attitude. I hope Jeff and his team nothing but success in this location, and anywhere else they may end up (because they're seriously going to outgrow this spot soon as people check it out), because they deserve it.
