God awful. Kiddo likes sushi so I thought this was a safe bet. Seated after a brief wait and then a VERY long wait for menus. The person who brought us our menus was clearly sick. Coughing (and not covering) a lot. Should not have been working. I tried the milk tea and the tapioca was terrible. I could not drink it. We each ordered bento boxes, which took a long time to arrive, and besides the soup everything was awful. The salads had browning lettuce. The rice was undercooked. My California rolls were weirdly warm. The chicken teriyaki was gross. Kid did not eat his shrimp tempura. We sat next to a window that overlooked a dirty pile of boxes. We left our food over half uneaten, and it is rare our kid does not eat all of his food and some of everyone else's. I do not recommend. read more

Fuji is such a welcome gem in Grand Rapids. A full-on sushi and Japanese restaurant on the Iron Range, open seven days a week, which already puts it in rare-company territory. The menu has a solid balance of sushi and sashimi alongside cooked kitchen dishes, all at very reasonable prices for the quality and variety. The staff is consistently welcoming and friendly, which makes dining here feel relaxed and comfortable whether you're stopping in for a quick meal or sitting down for something more leisurely. The chicken katsu deserves a special shoutout. It's a generous portion, perfectly crispy, and genuinely delicious. One of my favorite things is how much my young son loves coming here. He enjoys ordering a variety of sashimi, served one piece per order. It would be nice if it were two pieces per order, but the quality makes up for it. They even offer uni, which is a rare and much-appreciated treat, especially in this part of Minnesota. If you're craving sushi or Japanese food on the Iron Range, Fuji is absolutely worth the visit. This place is a small spot. I was a little iffy at first when we walked in. Was up in the area for work and we happened to find this spot. For my surprise.... the sashimi actually tasted pretty darn good for a sushi spot up here in the northern area lol. Had no fishy smell no nothing. Nice thick cut, Wasabi was strong, ginger tasted fresh. Of course I ate every single veggie on the tray!. The shumai,gyoza, and grilled squid tasted good. It was like any other sushi spot I have been to. I was mainly there for the sashimi anyway and I approve!. I don't do rolls, so you'll have to try that out yourself. Our experience with dinner was a mixed bag - 3 stars. Two of us stopped in for dinner and we sat at the front sushi bar. I ordered 2 tuna based sushi rolls and my friend got a shrimp tempura dinner with 2 sides. I topped things off with green tea flavored mochi ice cream. GOOD: Our food was very good, no complaints whatsoever. It came out quickly. And our server was very friendly. I really enjoyed watching their young children (very cute!) helping with some menial tasks in the front of the house. Finally, I felt the prices were reasonable. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Our server was very, very slow...friendly...but slow as hell. In fact, we had to flag her down every time we needed something, like when we ordered, when we needed beverage refills, when we wanted our tabs, etc. Kinda lame since it wasn't busy and I counted at least 3 employees. Since we sat at the front bar, I was able to watch food prep. I observed several unsafe food handling practices. In addition, there were fruit flies hovering all over the place. This was very concerning. I never would have seen this stuff if we sat at a table. (As a certified ServSafe Manager, I'm fully trained on basic safe food handling practices.) I don't want to pick on them or get into more detail on the food handling thing. But personally, I don't think I'd eat here again. (If I hadn't happened to see the food handling issues, I would have gone with 4 stars.) Quaint restraint. My hubby and I visited the area from Duluth, MN. Was excited to see a sushi place in the area. We tried out a couple of the chefs rolls and were really bummed out that there wasn't any tobiko on our roll that had it listed on the menu. When we asked about it the waitress said they don't have tobiko, but then turned back around and said, 'we know it's on the menu but people don't like it so we just stopped putting it on the roll'. The only reason we picked that roll is because it was one of the only ones with tobiko listed as an ingredient. Sushi tasted fine but the experience with the waitress rubbed us the wrong way. read more

Let me start by saying this place used to be 5 stars across the board, but the last two times were just about an F, so I've got to even out the score. My dining partner and I showed up at about 6:30pm, with the restaurant half full. We were seated immediately and orders taken almost as quickly - an appetizer and 2 sushi rolls. After 40 minutes, the server told us the food would be up shortly; they got hit with a rush (note: the party of 3 that came in 15 minutes after us were served their sushi). In those 40 minutes, there was no other communication or no refilling of our empty waters. 5 minutes later, the server tells us that they're out of the appetizer we ordered, so we picked something else. After 55 minutes of waiting from the time we place our order, our two rolls come out. 10 minutes later, our appetizer shows up. The food was ok -- the sushi was rushed, sloppy, and without the delicate character it usually has. We decide to take the bill and scrap the experience as a loss. I use the restroom while my dining partner settles up the bill. I come back out and we put our coats on. Then I realize that we still haven't got the check, and the server is nowhere in sight. She comes back about 5 minutes later from a cigarette break and asks how we're doing. We get our check and bounce. It seems they're having some staffing issues, as there's been a bit of turnover that I've noticed. They need an A team that is going to hustle, create a quality product, and treat the customers well. They started off that way, and I miss that. We used to drop an easy $80 when we'd go there. These past 2 times, it's hovered around $30. read more

I actually worked here part time. Aside from moving the floor mats at night to mop the floors. I've never seen anyone clean, except the one female server whom cleans the restrooms, the tables, the restaurant floor. Takes Togo orders, this restaurant is clearly understaffed. The main waitress is also the janitor, the floor staff. (Which they never let me take tables) I'm a 20 year veteran server. I can walk circles around their skewered customer service approach. Having applied as a server, with prior sushi experience, not being Chinese I was told "ahh no. No . No ." Well guess what? I quit. I will not eat their food because I'm scared they may contaminate my food in particular because of their lack of compassion, and finally their willingness to stab their employees in the back. Stay away from this place. The food may be ok. But the service and management is the worst possible. Don't waste your time. read more

As frequent visitors (we have a lake home nearby) I am surprised and embarrassed to find that this restaurant has been in business for two years and today was the first time we'd tried it. It is in kind of an awkward office building near the courthouse but the space is actually very nice, overlooking the library and the river. This was formerly the location of a nice dinner place ("Rivers") that also wanted to be a wine bar. It lasted for a number of years but finally failed. I am not an expert in Japanese food, though I have eaten a lot of sushi and sashimi on trips to Japan, but this place IMO serves up delicious stuff. We were there for lunch; I had a special they called "Penguin" which included a couple of tempura shrimp built into sushi and four pieces of sushi with spiced tuna innards and a wrap of smoke salmon. Excellent. My wife had a bento box lunch teriyaki chicken with salad, miso soup, and a couple of sushi varieties, one hot and one cold. Also very good, though the chicken was a little dull. (Chef: More flavor!) The wasabi that came with the meals was fairly hot, definitely hotter than Minnesota standard, but not so hot that it watered our eye when we got near it. Just about right, in other words. We'll be back! We're glad that they survived long enough for us to find them and hope to help them survive into the future. Grand Rapids has always had respectable steak-house type food (Forest Lake) and, currently, good Mexican (El Potro) but finding something like this is a huge boost to food variety in town and real treat. We had lunch here today. I was pleasantly surprised. There are not many restaurants in the Grand Rapids area that I want to go to now that The Sawmill is closed. Plus great ethnic food in northern Minnesota is hard to come by (El Potro is a good choice ). Fuji is better than my neighborhood Japanese restaurant in St Paul. I will definitely come back. He fish was fresh, the presentation was lovely and we had good service. I had the lunch special with 2 rolls. My daughter had udon. I went here for lunch and the lunch special is great two rolls with a tofu soup and salad with a type of vegetable salad dressing(really good, for a person that doesn't like vegi stuff). I've been here 2 times in the last week. The first time I had the Shrimp Tempura and the second I had sushi. The tempura batter was very good, not at all soggy. The sauce was a bit lacking in flavor. We also had gyoza which was very good. My husband had steak and shrimp hibachi which he liked a lot. The second time I had the clear soup, very good; seaweed salad, excellent; and one of the sushi rolls. I've forgotten the name but it was spicy tuna with seared tuna on top. It was also very good. My sister had the chicken hibachi. She said the chicken was like chicken, nothing special. But both my husband and my sister thought the dipping sauces that came with the hibachi were very tasty. read more
