Driven by this place quite a few times and decided today was the day to check it out. Service was excellent and would come back for the service alone. Waitress brought out a complementary roll for us to try which was good. As my son put it, it has the potential to be really good. Fish was fresh but for us the sauces were the issue. Sauces were in some causes very over powering but did not have the flavor you would expect. Sauce for me really took away from the food. Have lunch specials which was nice. read more

I've been here tons of times by now and every time the service has been fast and the waitress has been very nice and quick. The sushi chef has prepared and sent out the rolls super quickly every time and it's super amusing to watch him. The place itself is great and looks amazing, they have traditional decorations and have maintained the cozy cabin look very nicely. The food itself is incredible, and sometimes they even give us free sushi rolls to go with our meals. Everything my family and I have ever ordered has been incredible and tasty and the price itself is very budget friendly and that's not even including the free rolls they hand out to customers occasionally. Overall this is my favorite restaurant to go to, and trust me I know my food. read more

There's little choice in Rome and most everything is pizza, riggies, pizza, riggies, or closed on Sundays. But Fuji is open. (Extra star for that.) It's an odd spot. It's not a typical Japanese menu, and I'm still trying to hone in on what their specialty may be. Tom yum soup seemed a stretch but it was a great order. It was different than any I've had at a Thai restaurant, but so what. It was really good. (FYI--For some reason Fuji wasn't showing up on Google maps. The food is very good, better than Mitsuba, IMO. But, for the last several months I've chosen Mitusba, instead. Why? TERRIBLE SERVICE. The one waitress shuffles from table to table, no personality, no friendliness, just grunts her replies at you and slams the food down when it's ready. I have eaten here before and the food was always excellent. However today we went and they brought the wrong food to our table. We had to wait about ten minutes to get their attention to make them aware of the situation. They then removed the food and brought it to the table of the customers who had ordered it. I would have thought a reputable business would have made new food for the table that had ordered it. If this is their business practice then I guess this is the last time we will be eating there. read more

Food is delicious... comparable to Red Samurai. If you want the hibachi cooked in front of you, you have to go to New Hartford but if you want a nice, quiet place to eat then this place fits that bill. I never had problems with the service being slow. The servers have always been back to see if anything is needed. And the portions are HUGE! Depending on what you order you just might love your sushi roll. My favorite one is the Hot Lover. It's made with Soy Paper instead of the Seaweed. I am not a fan of the seaweed. It's usually tough to chew and it is hard to swallow. I love their tempura shrimp and vegetables. The dumplings and some of their other things need improvement. Sometimes we get the most rudest waitress. No eye contact and no personality. She is a rotten witch of a girl. I don't know her name but she definitely should not get any tip. She's downright awful to her customers. I hope I get her again. I want to give her a one cent tip just to make my point! Trust me, she doesn't deserve a tip with her rotten disposition. read more

Lets just put it this way... I'm from out of town and this is on my "must do" list every time I visit. Also, don't be thrown off by the log cabin look. All the hibachi dishes and sushi rolls are priced more than fair. Where I'm from, I consider this place cheap! The sushi rolls are delicious and the hibachi dishes are excellent. For reference, we ordered the yummy roll, the valentine roll, hibachi filet and hibachi chicken/shrimp. The yummy roll was fantastic in all its deep fried, flavorful glory. The valentine roll is almost like the roll I get from the sushi place back home, except the crab is not spicy... sooooo good! The hibachi filet meal has been unmatched every time. I love sushi and have been waiting for a place to offer it to open in Rome. Finally! I've been here three times so far and have only had either the basic rolls (seaweed on outside, basic ingredients ie tuna/salmon) and chef special rolls. Each time I've gone with one person and we have collectively ordered 4 rolls so I've sampled 12 and have loved every single one. Quality of sushi - I'd rank it higher than the sushi places in Utica and more on par with some of the places in Syracuse (Ouishi, Namu specifically). The chef's rolls are pretty creative and that's nice to see in a town of Rome's size. Environment - Fuji is in a log cabin that was previously used to house a steak or BBQ place I believe (hence, the appropriateness of a log cabin). While the decor is indeed unusual, it makes for easy and fast seating; all the tables are very accessible with wide areas between each. Big as well as small parties can find seating easily. Every time I've been there, I haven't had to wait. Waitstaff - wonderful. I hope Fuji will be able to maintain as many waiters and waitresses as it has to be as accommodating as it is. The ratio of waitstaff-customers is perfect. Parking - lots of parking, something I always consider when choosing a restaurant. It was ok! (Just ok.) I would go back, though I would order differently to avoid the sushi rolls and specials with accompanying sauces. They​ are a little heavy-handed​​ with the various sauces and found the dishes WITHOUT sauce to be more enjoyable. I give it 3-stars because I have had the opportunity to experience 5-star sushi. For being a land-locked town in upstate New York, we are very fortunate to have a lovely place to satisfy a sushi craving! Next time I will try their hibachi! read more

As the prior review said - interesting vibe! We started with appetizers of shumai and edamame. The shumai were really tasty, the edamame was, well, edamame, tough to get wrong! For entrees my husband got the salmon hibatchi, I got the filet and shrimp. The meat and the veggies were excellent. The downsides and the reason I am giving only 3 stars is the salad was literally floating in dressing and the fried rice had clearly been fried well in advance. One of my favorite things about hibatchi is that the rice is always freshly fried and crispy but not a Fuji. Service was very fast - we were surprised how quickly we got in and out. Where to start ... Negatives: The food is terrible, in fact calling that sushi is almost criminal. The restaurant is all wrong for the food style, owing to its origin as a failed American eats place called "The Log Cabin" (that should answer some poor tourist's confusion). The menus are as re-purposed as the structure. Positives: Decent location. I've wondered how this place remains open. I've entertained the notion that it's a front for the Yakuza or some other nefarious entity, which keeps cash at a sufficient level to pay the bills. The chef that made our sushi came out and saw that we were waiting and then ran back in to make sure we didn't wait any longer than necessary. Was greeted right away by the hostess and seated. Service throughout the night was attentive and prompt. Ordered the gyoza and Yellowtail Jalapeño roll for appetizers. Nothing special about the gyoza but the yellowtail was very good and uniquely arranged. For the main course I had the chef's special Hidden Dragon roll. This was a mix of spicy tuna, shrimp and eel. The presentation of the roll was ornate and was only bested by the taste. The log cabin setting is not what you would expect but honestly was half the reason I chose to eat here! The food is delicious. The service? Worst I have ever encountered. We were a table of 4 and they forgot my order so my food came an hour later than my family's. Yes, an hour. I asked the waitress that my meal be free and though she argued it at first, she finally agreed. Waitresses don't come over until you get up to ask for something. Drinks will not be refilled. They have food listed on the menu that is never available. Service has no regard for their customers, you will see that when you come in. The pork gyoza was mediocre. Like most Japanese places their bowl of salad was more like a soup as it had 1/2 of water on the bottom. I got the sushi deluxe. The rice wasn't compressed enough - fell apart. The salmon was vey bland. The tuna nigiri was off/bad. Not surprising since all of the raw fish was warm! Stay away from any raw fish here. From the outside it looks like a log cabin... Well it is.... But it has a great feel to it. Nothing fancy but I love that it isn't filled with people screaming "saki?" I have been here many times. While although I am not a huge raw sushi fan,my husband is. They have a wide variety of sushi to choose from ,including cooked, that is always fresh and very tasty. I always order the dinner of bees filet that comes with sautéed veggies, fried rice ,onion soup and a salad. There is so much on the plate that I ask for a to-go box but honestly the meat never makes it home ;). The staff is always nice and besides being understaffed a couple of times they are very attentive and the place has a great quiet vibe. I can't say enough good things about it!!! My wife and I ate here tonight and while my expectations were not high, we had a nice meal. The sushi was fresh, as was the salad. I ordered calamari that was a little tough, and ultimately should not have ordered as the sushi for two was filling enough for the both of us. Interesting building, a log cabin. I had a Groupon, and bought two without having been here before. I was a little worried that I'd not like it and have to go again to use the coupon, but no worries. Best sushi in Rome, and the customer service is great. When you look at it from the outside its a log cabin, when you look at it from the inside its still a log cabin, and when you get your meal you realize that its awesome! I mean if the log cabin didnt sell you, the fact that everything is hand made, everything is fresh, and everything is delicious it will make you want it more. I'll admit, from the exterior I was a bit skeptical, but I'm so glad we tried it out! Being in Rome, NY I was not expecting much. The Log Cabin motif is a little odd, but the hostess sat us immediately and was quick with the service. My husband and I have been there about a half dozen times and we always order rolls. Every time I go I am impressed with the quality. They use very good quality fish, and they use more fish in their rolls than other local sushi places. Also, the rolls are never drowning in sauces. FIrst off, everyone complains that the place is a log cabin, that's because it used to be another restaurant based on a log cabin theme before that went out of business and was bought by the current owners and turned into Fuji. That part isn't important, and I'm pretty sure they have log cabins in Japan, so get over it people. Just because the place isn't a shinto shrine or something doesn't mean the food isn't great. That being said, Have eaten here plenty always enjoy the food! The portions are large, and the price while a little high is about what you'd expect for a nice place. The food is prepared quickly and with style, all of the pictures you see of their food is accurate to how they are served, and I just love this place. Wait staff is nice, and they don't talk you up to much which is appreciated. read more

We were in the mood for Japanese food and were on our way to Geisha II in Utica, when we saw the parking lot was full at Fuji. We parked in the last open spot in the lot and entered in the front. The restaurant has a clean, log cabin appearance and was very neat inside. The noise level was very comfortable. We were shown promptly to our seat by friendly and gracious wait staff and were provided with the usual comprehensive japanese steakhouse menu. The hibachi preparation is in the back left of the restaurant behind glass and the skilled chef put on a nice demonstration for the children and interested adults. Chopsticks are provided and additional eating utensils are brought for the diner's comfort. We ordered the miso soup, which was delicious. The house japanese salad had crisp, fresh vegetables and had a flavorful dressing on it as a nice appetizer. We were then brought 4 hand rolls of tuna, salmon, spicy tuna and california roll, with wasabi and pickled ginger on the side, and small dipping plates for the table soy sauce. The rolls were all fresh and had great flavor, especially the spicy tuna roll,which had a pleasing crunch to it. The sushi rice had the approriate sticky consistency and flavor. The wasabi was fresh and had good heat. The table soy sauce had excellent flavor as well. Our next course was Hibachi style vegetables and vegetarian noodles. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, tender crisp and the dipping sauces were flavorful, a ginger soy sauce, and what tasted like a mayonnnaise based sauce for the hibachi style vegetables. It came with vegetable fried rice, which also had excellent flavor and the vegetarian noodles had a delightful smoky flavor. There were aspragus spears cut on a bias, shitaake mushrooms, broccoli, yellow and green onion, carrots etc... The noodles were of good consistency and were tasty. I enjoy a little spice with my food and asked for hot chili sauce on the side. It too was very flavorful and complimentary of the other flavors. I asked our waiter, if he lived in Rome, or nearby, but was surprised to find that he commuted all the way from Brooklyn, NY by bus 5 hours each way to work at Fuji. We were very pleased with our dining experience, and our bill came to less than $36 for 3 people. We will definitely be returning here over and again and hope that the restaurant achieves lasting success in this community.
