First time at Red Samurai...very friendly waiter, good hibachi show and generous portions. If you've been to other hibachi places this is on par. We had lunch hibachi which may be a bit better value than dinner. I had the steak and the others had shrimp and scallops. Steak was tender and about a six ounce portion, shrimp was about 8 large shrimp and scallops were 4 large sea scallops that were cut in half prior to plating. Its been 6 years since I reviewed Red Samurai and this is still my favorite sushi restaurant in the area!!!! They did renovations during COVID, and it looks beautiful inside! They took out the sushi-go-round and added more dining room space. The food is consistently great here. Can never go wrong with their seaweed salad, sushi, or hibachi dinners. Service is always top notch as well. All of their waiters are great. I got take out tonight and ordered seaweed salad and a Philadelphia roll. I want more LOL. I'm always craving their sushi! Super delicious and the ingredients are always freshhhhh. I am definitely their number one fan LOL. I gave them 5 stars six years ago and they are consistent years later! 5 stars! So me and my family were up in Utica for my brothers college graduation and we were looking for a nice place to eat to celebrate and we definitely picked the perfect place. The atmosphere is lively and energetic and our waiter Hurc was absolutely phenomenal. He definitely made the meal and the experience absolutely amazing for me and my family. The food was superb he recommended the rock shrimp appetizer which was delicious and my father, younger brother and me split the party boat which was for three people and the sashimi and sushi was the freshest that I've had. Sushi is my favorite food I've been eating it almost my whole life and I wish I didn't live seven hours away I would be an absolute regular here. Dined here for a graduation dinner last week with a large party. We sat at a hibachi table and had two separate chefs and servers. I can't speak for the other side because we had no interaction with that server or chef, but our server was slightly rude and our chef was inexperienced. He dropped many things and didn't put on much of a "show". The soup and salad given with the hibachi was very good. The yum yum sauce was terrible. It basically had no taste. My rice was burnt and my steak was overdone. The restaurant is set up like a typical hibachi restaurant. Nothing special. I did not use the restroom so I cannot comment on that. read more

This is a long-overdue review. I have been to this place since I came here about 2 years ago and have always had wonderful experiences. The place isn't too hard to find since it's in its own little plaza with plenty of parking. It is situated right next to Denny's on Seneca Turnpike. The chef that I met initially is now the manager and they have always given us amazing customer service. You can either choose to go to the hibachi, which is to the left, or the regular table, which is to the right. Both are great. If you like noise and burning flames for show when they cook, and a wonderful entertainer that comes and chat with you, hibachi is the way to go. If you like to talk with others and chill, then the regular tables would be your pick. They even offer birthday specials for their customers! For hibachi, the filet, salmon, and scallop are a must-try order; for regular table, the dynamite roll and raw salmon are always great. Unfortunately they do not have uni. The service is also superb. Attentive waiter/waitresses coupled with speedy service. Will always return here for Japanese food. Keep up the good work Red Samurai! read more

I've had three things from Red samurai in about a week, which was an odd coincidence of work lunches and one regular intentional dinner. I was disappointed mostly in the food because I just think it could be a lot better with a few weeks. Service is good, I didn't try the sushi which I would guess is pretty good, and the wait staff was very nice. Beer selection was good and they have cocktails and such. First thing I got was the pork katsu with "curry sauce" The katsu was alright, possibly a little thin, but my main beef was that all I got was a big katsu (which is a schnitzel or deep fried pork if you were wondering) with a side of a slightly curried dark sauce. Japanese curry may be my favorite curry since its a thick and rich dark sauce with vegetables that you could serve over rice with no meat and have it be a satisfying meal, but this was dippable strips of pork with an okay sauce. Veggies and a punched up sauce just doesn't seem exorbitantly expensive if you're already selling the meat. Second thing I got was the hibachi combo (chicken). this was fine. albeit a little boring, but it's nice they let you order it without sitting at a hibachi table. Last I got yaki udon and mostly its the same reaction as the hibachi chicken. Savory brown sauce thick noodles and a small handful of veg and tiny chicken pieces. I think with more green onion, some regular onion and maybe a side of broccoli that's all it would have took to make me a happy camper. I love thick noodles, and these were fine but there's more to dishes than the one big main element. Anyway, if you read this far, good for you honestly. but yeah alright establishment. Most importantly checking before you leave - if you're picking up, to make sure it's correct and what you actually ordered. Additionally, calling before ordering to make sure they have food that's listed on their menu - we have tried to order crab for example for months and we always get a call "sorry our menu is very outdated, always call first to make sure we have what we have listed." This place is so sub par, but I guess if you've only had sushi in upstate New York you really wouldn't know how bad this place is. Dirty plates, tuna with dried edges, rubbery yellow tail. From 2/21/15 I came here with an entourage of 10 of my closest friends for my going away dinner- Hibachi style. Our server was pretty awesome and good at dealing with a group of hungry- booze thirsty group like us. He took our orders, made sure we had what we wanted, we got our booze "I got the Kikomans plum wine btw," the miso soup and salad- then out came the chef! Our chef was super rad, he came out with a super soaker-like-gun and proceeded to bestow upon us sake. It was epic! I got the steak and shrimp with fried rice and lo mein. They have good deals for lunch. We got 3 rolls (salmon avocado, spicy tuna, and eel avocado) for $10 and sashimi sushi combo for $12. It came with miso soup and salad. They don't skimp on the fish and everything tasted fresh. I think their dinner prices are reasonable too. We LOVE Red Samurai! We have been here twice - each time for our daughter's birthday - and found it not just tasty but entertaining and fun. The hibachi is solid (if not a bit salty) and the sushi is very good as well. Most important, Isaac is a gem. I've visited this restaurant a few times, well, it's very close to my home; I love (and also make my own) sushi and, as an rare, expensive treat, come here for sashimi. The good points: It's convenient and the core sushi / sashimi items taste really great ... though side items like salads and miso soup are uninspiring. But hey, I come for great sashimi ... what can I expect for the Utica area? The bad: The service is mediocre at best ... I just don't feel doted on ... but that's not all. Take tonight for example. You can't walk in and get served at the sushi bar and get served unless you get a server, and the servers just don't seem to care about great service. The sushi bar really is a sad horizontal table far from the sushi chefs who, of course, aren't Japanese, and you're sitting far apart from them. Tonight I was served an $8.50 beer with a nearly hot glass ... when I asked for another, I realized it didn't matter since after pouring it, the beer in the can was warm anyway. The chair I sat in was falling apart. I REALLY wish I could recommend this place, but I can't. Fundamentally, a restaurant needs to deliver on great center-of-the-plate specialties, and all the rest. It's the "all the rest" where this place REALLY falls short. read more

Not sure why they couldn't make my order on the spot. And wasn't offered a discount or any type of consolation for the inconvenience. This isn't the first time. After doing some doordash with said friends, we decided we should go. I've never been, and again they said it was great everytime. When we first got there I said "Hi, table for 3. But we would like to watch it live." The guy left to go look, came back and sat us down. All was good until he came a SECOND time and asked us if we could move. Granted it was making it so we got our food faster. Then we already knew what we wanted to drink and we told him 1 apple juice, 1 shirley temple, and 1 water. Took him about 15 minutes. By the way, the place wasn't even packed maybe 3 other tables. We orders our food and what not. About minutes late the chef comes. Im so excited because I couldn't wait to watch. The eggs were burnt, and the rice was bland. No flavor. Like at all. Then we wanted our stakes medium rare. They we so pink and chewy we couldn't eat it. The chicken was weird. Wouldnt say bad, just weird. The veggies weren't even warm at all. The people across from us were smacking their lips like their life depended on it. My friends sister had to leave multiple times because it was so bad. The only good thing was their noddles. And let's not forget when we went to pay, they kept giving us the wrong check. They did it 3 times. (This part i'm not complaining just saying.) They did charge for the water or the apple juice. I wouldn't recommend to anyone to come here. Go on your local Groupon and purchase the $29 for $50 worth of food. If you go over your the price you can always pay the difference and have more food! You can order anything from drinks to appetizers to sushi to entrees. There is a policy where it's for 4 or more diners to claim the groupon. Bring your close friends or families and enjoy it. I got salmon teriyaki for dinner. It was awful. Definitely frozen out of the package fish. Very dry. Awful. Service was meh. The waiters there are very awkward. Definitely unsettling to have dinner here. The entire experience was just bad. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
