Love this place! My hubby and I have been searching for restaurants in the Salem area that are worth spending time at. We often times find ourselves in Portland just for a quality bite to eat, and it is well noticed that Salem is defiantly lacking in the restaurant category... until we stumbled on Fuji Rice Time downtown! Service was friendly, fast and the food was cooked (or uncooked) perfectly. The staff were very accommodating to our young children. The prices are just right and the atmosphere is cozy. I would give it 5 stars, but there is always room for improvement. If you want Sushi in Salem this is the ONLY place worth dining at! read more

The sushi here was not the best I have eaten. It was bland and the taste did not come forth as fresh. The prices were not inline with the quality or the quantity as I left still feeling hungry. The service was initially cordial and friendly, but drinks were not re-filled and the staff was not attentive during the meal. Which was odd because it seemed to be they had plenty of staff and it would of been nice if my drink was re-filled at least once. read more

This is my all time favorite place in Salem for sushi. It's all about quality and you can taste it here. I like hat it's all made to order. All the sushi rolls are. And the main chef is right there at the bar area making them right in front of you.. you may sit there and watch. Everyone there that works there is very nice and welcoming. Lunch hour times .. it gets busy there. Which just proves to you that it's one popular place to grab a lunch. Not only it's sushi that they serve.. but also very well made very tasty fresh made teriyaki dishes. Roger and I had dinner here last week before attending an event at the Elsinore. Service was attentive, prices reasonable and portions large. Roger enjoyed his udon noodles--a very large portion with tempura shrimp. I had a rice bowl with shrimp and vegetable tempura. It was served in a medium sized bowl with rice on the bottom and huge pieces of veggies (5" pieces!) and the shrimp sticking out the top. It actually was difficult to eat because it wasn't on a plate so there was no place to move the veggies to get at the rice. Also no dipping sauces were served with it which I thought odd. There was soy sauce on the table and I requested pickled ginger and wasabi but some sort of dipping sauce would have been nice. We will probably visit this restaurant again. read more

Scallops were whole and tasted fishy. The California Roll was so disgusting that I didn't even eat the tuna. It was dry and flakey and tasted fishy as it wasn't fresh. They had me pay first to sit at the bar and then when I said that I would forgo the bar-she changed her story to that they were closing for lunch and that I had to pay. I'm pretty sure that they charged me dinner prices as it was $20 and am certain that I was served food that was going to be written off as spoil. Probably why she made me pay first. Been a while since I ate here; got a spicy chicken lunch plate ($6.95). A very nice meal here! The very moist, juicy chicken combined with the exquisite spicy sauce for a magical combination (lots of red chili flakes in there). The sauce had a respectable kick while not sacrificing flavor. Very inviting presentation. The refreshing salad provided a nice breather from the saucy chicken. The dressing has a burnt orange color, which doesn't necessarily scream "I'm pretty, look at me," but it works for me. I wish Fuji Rice Time would get some nice spring greens instead of what appears to look like a packaged salad (it may not be, but it just appears that way). Fuji is the sister restaurant to Rice Time in Monmouth. This place offers tasty Japanese fare for a reasonable price. Located opposite the Elsinore Theatre, it's a great place to catch a bite to eat before a show or if you just happen to be wandering around downtown Salem. Fuji offers both bar and table service so it can easily seat couples or a large group (12-14 people; I know since they were able to accomodate my large family). Unlike some Japanese restaurants run by Chinese or Koreans, this one is the real deal. You won't be disappointed. If you're in the mood for Korean/Taiwanese fare, try their sister restaurant in Monmouth, Rice Time. Great food for a great price and very popular with WOU students and Monmouth locals alike! read more

My best friend from college and I used to come here at least once a week. It was so fun. We love this place. We always found the cuts to be generous and the flavors to be awesome. I don't think I ever had a complaint there. The presentation of all the rolls was always well done even during rush hour. The free tea didn't hurt either. The polaroids on the wall were always super helpful to us, althought we almost always ended up getting "the usual". Wait staff is amazing and the food is great - and FAST! Fuji Rice time is my new favorite japanesse restaurant! The food and service was great! They had a large selection of Sushi and I enjoyed the self serve hot tea. Fuji's restuarant is a mix of the average sushi, great waitresses, so-so decor, and pricey japanese food. In other words, nothing super spectacular going on here. Its a great place to go if you've got some extra $$$ and are in downtown Salem, but it is hardly worth making plans for. For the locals of Salem, it would be convenient (rather than going to Portland) but it comes at a hefty price. The waitresses are very nice. They are quick and prompt and are willing to make arrangements if told ahead of time. The service makes up for the food for sure. read more

Yum! This is my go-to for fresh, light and tasty lunches in Salem. The fish is fresh, service is friendly and efficient (perfect during the work day) and the prices are reasonable. Parking is never an issue which is a major plus. I usually get a sunomono, miso soup and sashimi. They usually have some kind io special as well. I've seem the rice plates, they look ample and tasty. Such a great experience! They only have street parking so it can be hard to find a spot. The seats are comfy because of their nice cushions. The servers are so kind! The miso soup and salad was delicious. The sushi was phenomenal! I absolutely loved it. My friend had the red bean ice cream and I had the mango. Both were incredible. Fuji Rice Time has great entrees and wonderful sushi. I ordered my food and picked it up with 20 minutes. The staff was all super friendly, they greeted me as I walked both in and out! The sushi was super fresh, and very presentable. My teriyaki chicken was cooked to perfection. The only thing I would say negative about this place is that their entrees are entirely too expensive. Fuji RiceTime is not only the best option for Japanese fare in Salem, but excels in the absolutely-beautiful-fresh-raw-fish department over restaurants I've frequented in NYC and other large cities. Look at the other available worthwhile local choices (Sushi Kyo, a favorite of mine for oddball creations on a conveyor-belt concept, and Kyoto Sushi which is far overrated and doesn't even serve lunch) and you'll agree that FRT is not only absolutely superior to anything else hereabouts, but that it stakes a strong claim to superiority over big-town sushi shops worldwide. Our first visit was for an early lunch, Having looked over the online menus, I smelled "overpriced cuz we're the only show in (this one-horse) town." $5.50 for an a la carte order of hamachi sushi?!? No matter, I was jonesing for sashimi and operating under the assumption that this burg couldn't possibly be as fish-impoverished as it seems. Well, we strolled in as first-time customers yet were treated to cuts of sashimi the size of my palm. I just stared at the plate. Heaven! Find that kind of generosity in London, Paris, New York or Los Angeles, and tell us where you found it! The salmon, smoked salmon, yellowtail, and albacore were buttery-fresh and absolutely delicious in taste and texture. The eel (whether unagi or anago) is great, just tell them to hold the wacky and sugary extra sauce on the eel sashimi, sushi and rolls. Amaebi (sweet shrimp), snow crab (on special for $5.00 that day -- always keeping in mind these people serve strangers HUGE quantities/cuts), and a plain old spicy tuna roll which was somehow more than perfect -- all kept us talking for hours about how great this place is. As a New Yorker, I don't much bother with reviewing service or friendliness or how cute the waitrons might be unless a restaurant's exhibition of these characteristics repeatedly and significantly impacts my experience of getting great food gracefully into my mouth. I will say, though, that the staff appeared to be entirely Japanese (this is a bit more important than the politically-correct cantors would have you believe), and they treated us cordially and professionally, and that the food they happily serve is really, really, really grand. A couple of suggestions for FRT employees reading this review: some genmaicha matcha-iri instead of or in addition to the sencha offered would be truly wonderful; the sake menu could be expanded a little, could it not? and would it be at all possible to include some grated daikon with sashimi orders... and (well why not ask) perhaps even put nukazuke on the menu as a garnish or side order? Readers, if you truly love extraordinarily beautiful fresh goodies-from-the-sea, find a time within their operating hours when you can go enjoy the jewel which is Fuji RiceTime. Moving from Tacoma, then Portland, I've desperately been looking for good Sashimi in Salem. I've finally found it. Fuji Rice Time is definitely the go to for fresh fish. I was looking for a nice little sushi place as I'm new to Salem. These guys had decent reviews for the price. My experience wasnt great. The service was good, very friendly waitress and sushi chefs, and the atmosphere was fine, but the sushi itself was not at all good. The rice was very overcooked in all four rolls we ordered, which resulted in mushy, soggy sushi. The unagi was not fresh, it tasted just like grocery store sushi. The teriyaki chicken my husband ordered was very bland and lukewarm. The tempura veggie appetizer was the best part of the meal, but the veggies were huge. This was only a problem because huge asparagus is very difficult to eat (big stalks are very tough). I wont eat here again. This terrible meal cost us $55. read more

The quality of the food is uneven, when its good its pretty good but whens its bad it practically inedible. Their curry was good and I would recommend their chicken; whoever, their beef was not only made Chinese style instead of Japanese style, it was also covered in a sauce that was so salty as to be inedible. In addition, their California rolls leaned toward overstuffed (which is still a much better problem to have than the alternative) with little rice to balance out the flavor of the avocado and fake crab meat. read more
