1/16/13 Went a few months ago when they first opened and thought it was ok so I was on town again and gave it another try last night. I think they are on the right track but need to work on some details. 1 - Either cut prices a bit or improve the quality of the fish. Decent portion sizes on the nigri but not much flavor. 2 - Wait staff is nice and attentive. But they need to work on their English. An accent is cute but I think they have trouble with colloquialisms and that got annoying after a while. 3 - My view is that sushi is all about the rice. Big fail here. Lacked that sweetness I expect, and instead tasted sort of like city water. And I wouldn't describe it as sticky but more like chewy and some grains were under cooked. Seriously, I've had better rice in grocery store sushi. You've got to nail this. 4 - And finally, no alcohol. They are "working on it". But not acceptable to me in a sit-down restaurant at those prices. Must have beer. I'll give them another try if they have beer, otherwise I think I'll just mosey over to Qdoba. Sorry. read more

The sushi I had at Fuji Sushi was the WORST I ever had. I ordered a miso soup, some salmon sashimi and a tigger role. The miso soup tasted off and overly sweet. The salmon sashimi did not smell fresh and was gummy. The tigger role, which is spicy salmon over spicy tuna, seemed to be made from the lowest quality fish around. Nice sushi rolls and a good assortment on the menu. They have a lot of great attributes, but being hidden in a mini mall isn't one of them.

I have not tried the local competitor to Fuji Sushi yet (Genji's) but I am pretty pleased with this place. I certainly did not expect to find a sushi restaurant in Midland. On my first visit I had a bunch of questions as I do not eat cheese or meat. The young boy (I would say 14ish) who runs the register and the restaurant phone struggled to answer my questions so I walked over to the sushi chef and started asking him. I've always been pleased with the quality of the sushi that I get here and actually go there about once a week. If you want sushi in Midland, I would definitely suggest Fuji Sushi. read more

Okay. So I wanted to like it more than I did like it. Didn't care for the miso soup, the tofu in it was slimy and overall it had a funky taste. The Diamond Roll was okay, but lacked any actual fish and only had six VERY thin pieces for the $13.95 price. They did not offer a seperate dish to put my soy sauce in and for some reason there were like 5 giant sprigs of parsley on my plate. I LOVE sushi, but this sushi is mediocre at the very best and super overpriced for sure!! I don't think I will come back, not impressed with my $20 lunch for one. read more

I was very surprised with how good the sushi is here! For years, the only option for sushi in midland was Genji. Not eating meat myself, they left me with pretty plain, unexciting options. But, the sushi was good so I kept going. Now I'll choose Fuji every time. I love their shitake and cucumber roll, and their tempura sweet potato roll gives a delicious crunch. Ordered carryout. When I arrived, the "hostess" was on the phone (clearly a personal call - not an order). She never acknowledged me in any way. She continued talking for several minutes. Another patron entered and instead of ending her call, she walked away from us. Eventually, a different server came over to wait on us. She rang me up, but when I went to pay in cash she called over to the "hostess." Apparently, the server wasn't allowed to work the register. I ended up paying by debit just so I could get out of there. The sushi was meh. Never going back. read more

Great dinner tonight with my family. We were celebrating two birthdays and our waiter picked up on our conversation and told us the birthday boys would receive the fried ice cream. Such a nice gesture. We ordered all sorts of food from sushi to tempura to katsu to yellowtail with jalapeños. Everything was delicious! Our waiter was such a kind gentleman and even told me about their service of pre-ordering fresh oysters a couple of days in advance if dining! That sounds to me like a party ready to happen. This is the best sushi in Midland. It's straight-forward, no frills, not trying for trendy. As soon as I see "trendy" + "sushi" I get worried. No, this isn't authentically Japanese--but it's the real Japanese-American deal and it stands up very well to sushi I've had elsewhere in the country. I've lived in Berkeley, CA and in NYC; one of my best friends runs a sushi restaurant in Denver, too, so I've met a lot of sushi. I've also been to the other, newer sushi place in town (Maru--trendy, did not love it) and to Midori in Mt. Pleasant (also trendy but I like it better than Maru). There's something homey and comfortable about Fuji, too, and I really like that they serve hot green tea and give you orange slices with your check. Always a treat. read more

I decided to try fuji, i wasn't a huge fan. I really wanted ro like this place. The atmosphere was dark and uncomfortable. My server was extremely rude. I took my son who has never had sushi before aside from his allergy, he could eat almost nothing. They wouldn't take the time to sit and help figure out what he could and couldnt have. Our party of six visited for the first time yesterday and we absolutely loved it!! Our waitress was Kay, who was flawless in her service. Honestly, all current and future waitresses/waiters/servers should have her as a mentor. We ordered two appetizers, 11 roles, and three desserts (yep, we were starving!) and everything was perfect. I had a good take out experience with Fuji Sushi. The person that took my order was very friendly and very knowledgeable on what their regular roll ingredients are, since they aren't listed anywhere. This place is the best when it comes to Sushi in Midland, since the only other places to get it are in Meijers out of the Deli (Dont you will get sick) or out of the Yummy Japan in the Mall (Same place as from Meijers nasty) I have been two times now, once for my mothers birthday and ones just because I could. Always good, I am in love with the spicy veggie tepura roll, I get it every time i go there, and will always. I also love the vegetable tempura (I am a vegetarian same with my mom) The only thing that makes me sad, is that the Miso soup has the bineto broth which is fish stock. So i dont get to have soup, but that is ok the salad is good and the rolls make up for it in no time. I highly recomend it to anyone that likes sushi. FIRST TIME EATING SUSHI...I LOVED IT! The food was GORGEOUS...the service was wonderful, the place was so clean and very nicely decorated. Very comfortable. I was a little nervous trying this, esp not knowing what to expect. I ordered BROADWAY ROLL, and it was simply amazing, so light and fresh and ...well I'm going back as soon as I can! We also tried 3 of the Vegetarian rolls.. avocado, asparagus and sweet potato...I liked the sweet potato the best. I wish there were PHOTOS OF THE FOOD on the menu, it would have been a GREAT help. Well maybe the experience is all in the risk and the anticipation of what is being prepared. I will be coming back! Only went there once. Had sushi deluxe - Sushi was very good, but not spectacular - a couple of the pieces were just slightly "tough" and maybe a little old, but the majority were very good. This is a traditional hole-in-the-wall sushi house. Even the the to-go containers are even more legit than Maru's (which uses the standard big, white Styrofoam square boxes, even for small orders). Fuji's prices and fish are MUCH better than at Maru. This is the BEST sushi fish in Midland by far! Fresh and large portions; even inside the rolls, the lone salmon and tuna pieces are buttery and flavorful. Portion sizes are substantial, for fish and other items. For example, Fuji's miso soup is double the size of Maru's and Fuji's is only $2 while Maru's is more than $3. Fuji does NOT charge extra for a cucumber exterior on a sushi roll (in place of rice and nori), however, nor does it offer brown rice. I am always appreciative of the staff accomodating my no-rice requests, and they even ask me questions about how I would like the roll to look in such cases. They also serve you complimentary orange slices for dessert when you dine-in. It is further away from downtown than many other restaurants, but takeaway orders are still very fast. Note, they offer sushi and hibachi just like Maru & Genji's do. Overall, this is my favorite sushi spot in Midland, and I wish more people would support this business instead of flashy Maru. read more

One of my favorite restaurants with quite possibly one of my all time favorite meals. I seriously live for their hibachi shrimp with an extra order of fried rice with extra yum yum sauce. Their edamame is also very good. I'm personally not a huge fan of sushi but from what I have tried there (the shrimp sushi and salmon sushi) it was still very good. Sushi is my favorite comfort food and I had sushi in almost every big city I have visited (and I only go to those places that have more than 4 stars on yelp). I have to say that this place is by far the best sushi place that I have been to. I think Midland people are very fortunate to have such a gem. I've only been here once, but the Sashimi was outstanding and served properly. A bit of a surprise in a small town like Midland. Reasonable prices for the quality. Service was abysmally slow (45 minutes after ordering the sashimi arrived) but it was the first week they were open so I have to cut them some slack.
