I live right up the hill and haven't been here in about six years. I actually kind of forgot about this place, but I decided to come in tonight for dinner. I went with a salmon avocado roll and a crunchy roll. The salmon avocado roll was fresh with a good amount of salmon and avocado in each piece. The crunchy roll had shrimp tempura inside with avocado, crunchy flakes on top, and a sweet sauce drizzled over it. Overall, everything was pretty decent. The sushi tasted fresh and the portions were good, but nothing really stood out enough to make it special. I enjoyed it, but I've definitely had better sushi at other places. Fuji Yama is one of the many places that I've driven past so many times on PCH and said I needed to try. My husband and I finally decided to stop in and we tried a few rolls and ordered shishito peppers. The special Jason roll, a spicy tuna roll with shrimp tempura, was our favorite. The shishito pepper app had a disproportionate amount of spicy peppers with my husband needing to chug a couple of waters. I thought they had good flavor. The restaurant had a couple of small groups but was pretty quiet at 1:30pm on a Saturday. The Japan news was playing in the background. We had good service from the one waiter and it's good to know they have a few patio tables in case we ever want to bring our dog. read more

$26 with takeout tip-approx. a half cup of white rice? 3 small sides of eel sauce and literally 3 bites of beef with the beef teriyaki and a few vegetables. Beyond disappointing- and lesson learned that this restaurant's teriyaki items are a la carte. MUST order rice separately or at least more of it in the future if I intend on returning. Grabbed takeout one night last minute to try their beef teriyaki. Based on the photo- that was to show about a half cup of steamed white rice, 3 small sides of eel sauce, and their beef teriyaki a la carte (again, menu does NOT say there's no rice I don't think- so make sure to order more steamed rice if you need it for your teriyaki entree. We sat at the sushi bar and had the pleasure of being served by the owner himself, which made the entire evening feel incredibly personal and memorable. Watching the owner work behind the sushi bar while chatting with guests was such a treat. He's clearly passionate about his craft and about the people dining in his restaurant. At one point during our conversation, he surprised us with a piece of tuna nigiri from the fish they had just received that day. Today my husband and I came in for lunch and the sushi chef was AMAZING!! she was very friendly and sweet. She gave us extra attention and patience because my husband cannot eat any type of fish but he was in the mood for rolls. So we came up with two rolls that he can eat. He was very happy and he said it was delicious. The food was very fresh the reason for the only 3 stars was because of the server she was not friendly she was kinda rude and very short with us no smile. The place is located inside a nice plaza with ample parking so you don't have to worry finding and paying for parking since it's Newport Beach. The sushi here is decent. Bummer... this was one of our favorite go to, for years. It is a bit in the pricey side but the food quality is exceptional. The issue, the service- first time in my life I didn't tip the server. We usually have female servers and everything is great. We had some guy who took our order and then spent at least 40 minutes talking to an older Couple about renting a room because has to drive the 91 to the 55... He didn't bring items we ordered, we had to flag down a female server and bus person to get our food and water refills- he never brought the beer I ordered. With the way prices are climbing, an establishment must keep up with service or we will head elsewhere- :( sorry and hope people are trained properly:( Live the food...:( read more

But what A complete 180 experience! The place is dark and empty with not much of a lunch selection. Said we wouldn't go back. But a year later this week, we said we'd give it another chance for lunch. Nothing is changed. Still empty, bare minimum selection. Miso soup not even offered. Had to ask for it. If we lived in area maybe would try for dinner based on reviews, but do not recommend for lunch. Too dark and empty. read more

The restaurant has a high ceiling so it's noisy, and the Southeast Asian female waitress makes the customers drink even louder, and there's no manager and only one waitress, so even though we made a reservation, young hispenic guy worker who wore glasses on checked our reservation and waited us for 5 minutes, and even when we came to the table, the female waitress didn't take our order but hugged a white young guy customer who was leaving. It felt like this was a restaurant or a bar where only men go. My heart was so pissed off like the name of this restaurant's as Mt. Fuji in Japan like Volcano!! read more

I came in last minute at 9pm and they told me last call was 9:10...I don't like to be that person that makes staff stay later but I was hungry and had a craving...the staff was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered yellowtail jalapeno cilantro carpaccio and a lemony tai snapper dice roll and a beer. It came out fast and was extremely delicious, I'm still savoring the flavors as I write this. I finished my meal quickly to get out of the staffs way but to my surprise the waitress Diana was so nice and pleasant we had a 5-10min conversation without any rush. It was such a treat to be treated so nicely by all the staff so late in their shift right before closing. I already recommended the restaurant to friends and written this review the same night. This was one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. The kind service and fabulous ambiance alone made such a welcoming experience. For food, we started off with calamari and miso soup which was incredible. The calamari wasn't over-battered or doughy, it was the perfect amount of crisp and the spicy mayo was so yummy. For our dinner, we had miso black cod, the specialty roll with yellow tail on a spicy yellow tail roll (which was my favorite), and the spicy tuna roll with tempura rock shrimp. The food was good but the service was horrible. #1. we had a reservation and showed up on time, they made us wait 15 minutes to sit down and forgot about our reservation. #2. we sat down and had to ask for waters and chop sticks after 10 minutes of waiting. and were only given 4 for a party of 8. #3. hair in food. #4. it was our friends birthday and they gave us a scoop of ice cream instead of a full cake with ice cream like another table got. with no spoon to eat it. #5. each of us asked about 4 times for sauce. #6. we asked for a to go box and they didn't give it to us. making us have to go to the sushi bar to ask. #7. they didn't split our check like we asked and charged us 10 dollars tax. they also did not mention the 25$ gratuity that was automatically charged. The food here was honestly terrible - this isn't Japanese food. It's possible it's a one-off but I don't think so - the rolls were sloppily crafted, the "sushi rice" was hard, cold, and not vinegared properly, the grains were sticky and broken, meaning they didn't know how to prepare the rice properly or they didn't pay attention to the timing or water:rice ratio. The garnished radish had already yellowed yet they served it to me; the seaweed salad was overly sweet and they served it over a mound of slivered radish to pad the dish. Fish was about B+ to A- quality. Some of the ikura eggs (salmon roe) were wrinkled and deflated already, with a puddle of ikura drainage over the inedible rice. The cucumber roll says it all: this is sushi made by people who don't know anything about Japanese cuisine - kappa maki (cucumber roll) should be about 1.5cm across, perfectly cut; these were 2 inches across with the inedible rice sloppily spilling from every surface. The service was quite warm, they looked concerned that I didn't like the rice. I told them my concerns and they said they would take it into consideration. I paid $55.28 for a most unsatisfactory meal. It may be that Newport Beach doesn't have many authentic sushi restaurants, so this Americanized fare is rated so highly. I hope not, but I suspect this to be the case. read more

there sushi is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. I usually order the lollipop roll which is wrapped and cucumber, and it is so good. The garlic edamame is also very good a bit spicy but best flavor. also it's basic but the cucumber salad i order at least 2 of them because it is very very good. service is normal pace depending on how busy they are. and lastly the ambiance has a great vibe to it and it's a fun place to come with friends for sushi & drinks. read more
