Hands down my favorite sushi spot Everything is always so fresh, the rolls are actually creative, and the service makes you feel so welcome every time. The quality is consistently amazing and the presentation is chef's kiss. Perfect spot for a casual dinner or cute date night. I literally crave this place weekly !! Highly recommend

8/2025 $26 with tip on a takeout order (approx half cup steamed rice,3 small sides of eel sauce;beef teriyaki (3 bites of beef)

$26 with takeout tip-approx. a half cup of white rice? 3 small sides of eel sauce and literally 3 bites of beef with the beef teriyaki and a few vegetables. Beyond disappointing- and lesson learned that this restaurant's teriyaki items are a la carte. MUST order rice separately or at least more of it in the future if I intend on returning. Grabbed takeout one night last minute to try their beef teriyaki. Based on the photo- that was to show about a half cup of steamed white rice, 3 small sides of eel sauce, and their beef teriyaki a la carte (again, menu does NOT say there's no rice I don't think- so make sure to order more steamed rice if you need it for your teriyaki entree. It's just very pricey. Not sure if I'd recommend takeout here again.

This was one of those rare dining experiences that reminds you why great neighborhood restaurants are so special -- the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression long after you leave. We sat at the sushi bar and had the pleasure of being served by the owner himself, which made the entire evening feel incredibly personal and memorable. From the moment we sat down, the energy in the restaurant was lively, warm, and welcoming. It truly felt like a neighborhood gathering place -- the kind of spot where people return again and again because it simply feels good to be there. Watching the owner work behind the sushi bar while chatting with guests was such a treat. He's clearly passionate about his craft and about the people dining in his restaurant. At one point during our conversation, he surprised us with a piece of tuna nigiri from the fish they had just received that day. It was absolute perfection -- buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, beautifully fatty, and packed with incredible flavor. Easily one of the best bites of sushi I've had anywhere. As if that wasn't generous enough, he also treated us to a baked roll that was phenomenal. It was such an unexpected and thoughtful gesture, and it perfectly captured the spirit of the whole place. What made the experience even more special was seeing the owner step out from behind the sushi bar throughout the evening to greet other tables, chat with guests, and check in with people around the restaurant. It created such a genuine family atmosphere -- you could feel how much he cares about the experience every single guest is having. And I have to give a huge shoutout to Diana, who truly elevated the entire evening. Diana is the kind of server who makes a restaurant unforgettable. She was warm, attentive, joyful, and effortlessly on top of everything. She made us feel incredibly welcomed and taken care of from start to finish. What really stood out was watching her move throughout the dining room. It wasn't just our table receiving that level of care -- every single table was getting the same thoughtful attention. You could see guests smiling, chatting with her, and clearly feeling like they were part of something special. She has a natural gift for making everyone feel like family. Between the exceptional food, the owner's generosity and hospitality, Diana's incredible service, and the lively, welcoming atmosphere, everything about this experience was unforgettable. If you're in Newport Beach and don't visit this place, you are truly missing out on one of the area's gems. We will absolutely be back again and again.

fuji yama never misses!!! this visit we got the shrimp bowl in the hot stone and it was amazing!! excellent option if you don't like sushi. the waiter even mixed it and served it up table side. i love the touch of bacon they added which (obviously) made it delicious. my husband tried the premium sushi dinner for the first time also and loved it... i think it's going to become his new go to!! 10/10 on everything!

The service is very attentive. The servers come around often to ask us if everything's good. The place is located inside a nice plaza with ample parking so you don't have to worry finding and paying for parking since it's Newport Beach. The sushi here is decent. I like their sashimi appetizers and sashimi.

The Crispy Rice with spicy tuna was definitely a favorite. The rice was perfectly crunchy, the spicy tuna was packed with flavor. Next was the Mad Man roll, which has filet mignon on top. The filet was tender, flavorful, and paired surprisingly well with the sushi. But the highlight for me was the Miso-glazed Chilean sea bass. The miso glaze added the perfect amount of sweetness and umami without overpowering the fish. Also, shoutout to our server! I feel bad because I forgot her name, but she was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. She checked in at all the right times and was just genuinely warm and welcoming.

For $160 for just a few rolls (no appetizers, no drinks, no dessert), the value simply is not there. The only redeeming quality was the staff. They were genuinely very kind, attentive, and helpful. Unfortunately, good service alone can't justify the quality or price. I won't be returning. I'd rather spend my money at places like Pacific Catch in Tustin or restaurants that prioritize and certify the quality of their seafood. As consumers, we have to support places that deliver real value.

The wait was about 30 minutes but since it was Memorial Day weekend, we kind of expected a wait wherever we went. We ordered the Trust Me to split, as we weren't overly hungry. Our server seemed perturbed that we wanted to split and kept repeating that it's designed for 1 person. I wanted to also order yellowtail sashimi, and I asked for it to be sliced thin. She told me they could not/would not slice it thin. So odd, but okay. I asked if I could get a side of ponzu and she said they do not do sides of ponzu. Again, so odd. I decided to skip ordering the sashimi altogether and we just stuck with splitting the Trust Me. We also ordered iced green tea. She brought the iced teas and I asked for sweetener. Did not receive it until our teas were empty. The table next to us (which was about 12 inches away from our table, it was very tight in there) overheard me ask for ponzu and leaned over to tell me that if I want ponzu, I can pour it off the plate of our first course. So nice of them to give me the tip! I just wanted some sauce haha I will say I really enjoyed the fish. Every course was good. Our server started taking our plates and chopsticks but then I mentioned we still had one course to go, so she put our now stacked and dirty plates and chopsticks back down on the table. My husband paid the bill and told me there was an automatic 16% charged for tip. That's weird for 2 people but whatever. We will order again but definitely online and takeout only. The restaurant was SO loud and small quarters. Not worth the wait.

After pursuing some options in the Newport/Huntington Beach area, I decided to make 8:30 pm reservations for Starfish in Newport Beach! I have driven past this location so many times, and was excited to finally try it out! Upon entering, I was impressed by the moody interior with beautiful lighting and a gorgeous wooden door. The hostess was kind and quick to offer us a two-top bar style seating table that was close to the kitchen. We appreciated that we were sat so promptly, and we actually enjoy sitting close to the kitchen so we could see all of the deletable food options! We began our meal with two rolls as appetizers - the Buddha roll and the Sushi Nigiri Plate. The Buddha roll was a tofu-based vegan roll with a fun touch of toasted coconut flakes and two delicious sauces layered on top. Both my boyfriend and I loved the roll and would absolutely order it again. My boyfriend loved the sashimi plate and stated that the seafood was fresh and was higher in quality compared to your average sushi restaurant. Moving onto our main course, I ordered the Thai Green Vegetable Curry with coconut rice (which our server mentioned was different from the regular white rice because they cook it with coconut milk instead of water) and my boyfriend was craving another sushi roll, so he opted for the Shrimp Tempura Roll. The Shrimp Tempura Roll was pleasantly different from regular shrimp tempura rolls, because it contained crab meat and shrimp tempura. We noticed at this point, that all three of the sushi rolls that we ordered used rice paper instead of seaweed, and this unique twist to the sushi rolls enhanced them! I LOVED the presentation of the Thai Green Vegetable Curry. Something about a large stem of basil cascading over my food makes it extra fun to eat! In all seriousness, this was one of the best curry's I have had, and the coconut rice enhanced the entree. For our beverage selection, the cold sake that we hoped to try was out of stock, so we requested hot sake instead, which we sipped on through the meal. Pro Tip: the hot house sake was only $10 which is an amazing price point! Finally, it came to my favorite part of the meal, dessert! My boyfriend was leaning towards the Scratch Cheesecake, and I was leaning towards the Mango Pudding. We asked for our server for her recommendation, and she stated that the Banana in Fillo Dough or Scratch Cheesecake were her top two options. Based on this, we opted for the Scratch Cheesecake. It was good, but I probably wouldn't get it again. In my mind, I think of a cheesecake and immediately crave a thick slice of a classic New York style cheesecake. However, this was served in a glass with a graham cracker crumble as the base, and a cheesecake-style mousse layer above, with poached asian pears as a topping. While this wasn't my favorite part of the meal, it was still a fun twist on a classic dessert with a lovely presentation. Next time, I think I'll follow my heart and try the Mango Pudding. Between the food, ambiance, wonderful service, and elevated experience for an affordable price point, we will definitely return!
