The sushi was about the quality of an all you could eat buffet. Which would be fine if it was cheap but it's not. The rolls were falling apart and the fish was chewy. They also gave my credit card to another customer after I had paid. My recommendation is Sakae sushi either increases their quality or decreases their price. read more

So glad to see Sakae back open! My wife and I have been coming here since 2007 and it's such a good little spot. Jin and his wife Grace who own and run the restaurant are the sweetest people and always so welcoming. The prices are good, especially being right by the beach and pier. Food is excellent. They have seats out front now as well so a bit more room for seating. This is such a great spot, we used to go in at least two Friday nights a month when we lived close by and always try to visit when we are back down on the peninsula. read more

Wow, such a great sushi spot! I have been to this place a couple times before and I was happy to be in Newport today to take my fiancé there. We brought our dog Lexi with us so we sat outside tonight. Perfect weather, a bit of a louder crowd sitting at the table next to us (apparently the saki is really good and really strong). I had the Oh Baby, spicy tuna wrapped in tuna and avocado w/ sprouts on the top. I don't like a lot of rice this had no rice. This came with 6 very large pieces made me feel comfortable for the cost for just this roll $20. It was worth every penny, very filling and tasty. The tuna was very fresh and high quality sushi grade tuna. I also tried the spicy edamame and gyoza. My fiancé kept it simple with a Tiger roll and California roll. Both items she thought were tasty. This very small restaurant with two tables and a sushi bar area so be aware you may have a wait for some great fish. Fish was beautiful and fresh. We tried a little bit of everything I had a Sashimi Roll No rice but the presentation made it look like a roll with rice. Salmon collar was crisp and if you like Sake Bombs you are in the right spot. They do have hot food but are table did not sample. The spicy garlic edamame was great but share with a friend because the garlic is overpowering and garlic breath is not as noticeable when everyone has had some. This is a great spot. Service was good/friendly. They reopened on 6/16/25 after being closed for 2 years. I always loved their nigiri sushi and rolls. I ate there on 6/17/25 and was disappointed. I had the spicy tuna roll which was poorly rolled and fell apart on my plate. Also had the yellow tail nigiri that was very tasty. However, my favorite had always been their albacore nigiri which was definitely subpar this time. I'll give them another chance in a couple of months. read more

It's the sake for me. Sakae Sushi might just be my new go-to sushi spot in Newport Beach! This small hole in the wall practically sits on the sand, so both the freshness and quality are incomparable! My order included the baked salmon roll with gyoza for pick up. The baked salmon was incredibly tasty, and paired perfectly with their extra spicy spicy mayo. I also loved the piping hot fried gyoza, crispy and golden brown. Their space is a bit compact, but you can dine at a number of tables inside, including bar top seats that provide a perfect perch for people watching. They also have a few spots available on their sidewalk patio. You can tell that the owners take a lot of pride in the dishes they serve. The service was speedy and top notch. Stopped here on a Sunday night. Place was packed but we were promptly seated as another table got up. As we were looking over the menu, the table next to us was already ordering. It seemed like they were regulars. After ordering, the waiter updated some sheet on their table. A lady came to take our order and we started with two orders of miso soup. She muttered something about completing the form as she walked away. I updated the form with the two miso we'd ordered so far. After some time, the same lady came to check on us but walked away rather put off. I guess apparently we were supposed to fill out the sheet with what we want to order. We finally ordered the Sexy Lady roll and the Sushi Premium. The roll was very pretty and tasty but tended to fall apart due to the generous portion of spicy tuna/ crab mix. The sashimi premium we ordered supposed to be 24 pieces but we received the sashimi special instead (16 pieces). The sashimi pieces were nice and thick and very refreshing. Hardly needed any soy sauce nor wasabi. This turned out for the better since we were getting stuffed. While we were eating, they brought out a complimentary dish to our table and the same dish to other tables around us. Not sure what it was called but it was tasty. When we got our check, we explained the discrepancy with the sashimi dish, and they corrected the charge to the 16 piece instead.
