FAST AND FURIOUS RAMEN: KOKIYO DRIFT We drifted over to this ramen spot after a brisk ride on the Newport boardwalk nearby. Resembling the ramen stalls in Japan, this small shop is very limited in seating for 10 patrons max. You order via self-serve kiosk like in Japan. But there was a worker that was kind enough to walk us through the ordering on the kiosk. The menu is also very simple, concentrating on a couple variations of ramen and some sides and appetizers. The food came out pretty fast, so I didn't get furious from being hangry. RAMEN WITH CREAMY BROTH- was mild in flavor, the broth was not thick as you would think being creamy, it was thin and runny, very liquidy. I wish the soup had more umami taste. When you have a lot of neutral flavored toppings in the soup, the broth should be well seasoned have extra deep richness to flavor the other ingredients. The chicken had a nice char that gave it depth of flavor. A mouthful of all the ingredients together made it a decent dish. CRISPY CHICKEN TENDERS- So good, I would come here just for these. Crispy, they were indeed, and a little kick of spice to boot. The meat was juicy with a crunch on the outside. Dip it in the semi sweet sauce and I am lovin this Asian version of Raising Cane's. This has been our go to place for ramen when the team at work is craving for it. This is right off PCH in the same plaza as Jack in the Box and Doughboys Donuts. We usually place our pick up order online. The creamy broth ramen is good, we substitute the chicken for the pork belly chashu (way better in my opinion). Some of the best ramen I've had, if you order online it's either ready 5 minutes before your expected pick up or 20 minutes after and there's no in between. Someone working more towards the front of house would benefit the place greatly as it seems like the workers are at the mercy of whatever computer program runs the ordering system. My only huge concern was that the eggs were cold-ish in the middle AND the broth was not hot hot. It wasn't even hot enough to need and wait to eat it. I spent the whole day in Newport Beach and had walked and ran for miles so I was wet, cold and tired so i really needed a hot item to pick me up and this was mid just because of the heat. They had cucumber lemon water available for self serve which was a neat touch. The employees were great and the speed of food was fast considering they had many online orders they were working on. I got all the fixings on the side so I could try the ramen and broth separately. Ramen is good but I have had better. The broth was ok, a little salty but just okay. Found my new go to spot whenever I'm near the beach! The place is small, with only four tables inside but I saw many people placing orders for to go. We ordered their clear and creamy broth ramen the latter containing cashew milk which I was pleasantly surprised by as it was my first time hearing of a ramen broth using that type of milk. Noodles were perfectly cooked and broth was delicious. We also ordered their gyoza and their spicy chicken tenders which in my opinion was the star of the show. Their house made sauce for the tenders really topped it off and I would come back just to get these again. We tried both the strawberry lemonade and thai tea slushie both which were surprisingly really good with our meal as the thought of having slushies with ramen is kind of a weird concept. Hubby took me here to try the vegan ramen here after seeing it go viral on tiktok. I really want to applaud them for the uniqueness of the dish and thought that went into making it because I can tell that it was carefully crafted BUT I think it could be better. The biggest issue is that they add a slice of narutomaki, the little white circular slice with a pink spiral pattern in it. THAT IS FISH! NOT VEGAN! I had a bite and could taste fishiness immediately. To the business: PLEASE STOP PUTTING THIS IN THE VEGAN RAMEN! I didn't want to make a big deal of it so I gave the slice to my hubby but others may have stricter diets and maybe some people are allergic to fish! So I hope the business takes this seriously. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you may have to specifically ask them to omit it. Other than that, the ramen comes with two big slices of tofu that has some breading on it like fried chicken which makes it way more interesting than regular tofu (and yay protein!). However, the breading gets soggy in the broth so I was in a rush to finish it. The broccoli on top is freaking delicious (but definitely a bit on the oily side). Fried slice of lotus & the fried garlic toppings were also great. There was some spinach and corn to balance it out but on the whole, it was a little too unbalanced with fried, oily toppings. Ramen broth is nice and creamy but could be a bit more flavorful. Kale noodles were great. No notes. We also got the fried mushrooms and they were breaded perfectly! Came with slices of fried garlic and fried with dried chilis too (but not too spicy). Also had some sort of orange aioli but honestly, the mushrooms were delicious on their own. I was really impressed with their ramen and I'd come back for that. Their pot stickers are made fresh daily and come out with a steamed top half and crispy on the bottom. They use a ponzu sauce for dipping which gives it a nice citrus touch. Their tenders are cooked in a wok with garlic and chili peppers. Pork/Chicken creamy ramen- 2/5 broth was fatty, however it lacked flavor, even salt. noodles and ramen egg cooked to perfection! however nothing else notable to this dish. The meat, also cooked well, tender, but once again no flavor. For example, we got the chicken with creamy ramen but we had the option of chasu or a clear broth. They also give a good variety of sauces. The spicy one is my favorite. They pack the ramen separating the broth so it doesn't get soggy which was great. Nice runny yolks too. Good amount of toppings. Pot stickers were on the smaller side. Their gluten-free options are amazing, offering gluten-free rice noodles, protein edamame noodles, and sweet potato noodles--all of which happen to be gluten-free.
