From having dried rice to cutting really thick purple strips of radish, I felt like this wasn't a traditional Japanese establishment. With Ramen growing in popularity, Fujiya is one of the few ramen spots that have popped up in the area. Amongst the couple that have sprouted, I think Fujiya is probably the best one I've had. We started with the Takoyaki as an appetizer. The Takoyaki made here is much different than the Osaka style I'm accustomed to. I think it's because there is a lot less sauce used, less octopus, and more batter used. Although a different taste, I think it's safer for those trying it for the first time because the flavor is much less dense and more adapted to the American palate. Although the Cha Siu Ramen is probably one of the best ramens in the area it is pretty average overall. I would say the broth is not as strong/fatty/oily as it could be, which makes the taste a bit weak. Because of that, I felt I was focusing more on how the noodles tasted, which was also lackluster. The cha siu was similar to the broth, where the fatty goodness was almost non-existent. If the flavor was brought out more/enhanced it would have definitely been a much more enjoyable dish. Ahhhh. The better of the two Montclair ramen places. Better service and better broth. Or perhaps the reason why the ramen tasted better was because I actually had a chance to enjoy it. Also, free edamame! We started with takoyaki and kani jalapeno. Both were dressed with eel sauce and the kani jalapeno also had spicy mayo - making it look like American maki rolls. Dunno if that's a good thing or bad thing. Anyway, I don't have a basis for comparison on the takoyaki, but it was pretty good. A savory Japanese munchkin if you will. It was topped with bonito flakes. It's always cool to see bonito flakes react to food emitting heat. The kani jalapeno was delicious - mainly because it was spicy (by the way the menu doesn't indicate spicy when it's probably the spiciest thing they have). Expect to have your mouth experiencing heat for more than 3 minutes. The fact that it's battered in tempura also helps a lot. As for the ramen, first off it was brought out FAST. No more than 5 minutes after ordering. The spicy miso ramen was delicious. Great depth of flavor, great chew on the ramen noodle. The pork was a bit of a fight as they give you a big slice that you somehow have to break pieces off. Complimentary egg was more a medium-hard boil. Unfortunately,no narutomaki (pink and white swirly fish cake) was included. However, the biggest reason I prefer this place is because I/we weren't rushed out at all. In fact, we were just hanging out finishing the sake I brought (because I happened to have two bottles in my trunk for some reason). One thing I would like to see at this restaurant is pork/meat bun. I so wanted to love it. The buns were bland compared to other ramen places. The meat both pork and chicken were tough. We got there later in the day so our appetizer arrived after our ramen was served. The girls working were super sweet. We sat at the middle tables and there was a cold draft. The broth and noodles both satisfy me. I always get the miso ramen. They also have excellent gyudon and fun appetizers. Side eyeing some of these negative reviews. I've had ramen twice before, with mixed results. The first time was okay, the second time was not that great. Fujiya Ramen was my third -- and possibly last -- attempt to enjoy this Japanese meal. There was a little debate as to whether we would try Fujiya or its near-neighbor, but I ended up choosing Fujiya based on reviews of its positive wait time, bigger dining room, and overall experience. I definitely made the right choice. I was so pleased with how we were treated from the minute we walked in! We were seated with no wait, AND they were willing to seat us before our whole party arrived (they were still parking) -- which is nearly unheard of and an absolute blessing if you've ever tried to park in Montclair on a Saturday night! Our party of five got a bunch of appetizers in addition to some sodas, and my friends also brought some BYOB beers. We ordered: Tori Karaage Chashu Pork Edamame Honestly, I was skeptical of the Tori Karaage fried chicken appetizer but it was tasty. The chicken was pretty moist, and the outside was crunchy without being oily or heavy. We finished that plate faster than I'd care to admit! The thin, delicate slices of Chashu pork belly were amazing, almost buttery in their softness and texture. The sauce was perfect and it was just a great start to our meal. Order this! I am not a fan of Edamame, so I didn't have any, but the portion was pretty big for an appetizer and my friends seemed to enjoy it! I chose Miso Ramen for my meal. Broth was very flavorful, and not salty at all (which is what made my previous ramen experience so off-putting). No MSG, as noted on the menu. Tons of noodles, which were thick and maintained their firmness all the way to the bottom of the bowl. I happen to love sweet corn, so finding a lot of it in my bowl was like a sweet and surprising touch of Jersey in my meal! The pork belly was absolutely delicious again, and had a slightly different taste and texture in comparison to the appetizer. Overall, it was a great meal and I surprised myself by finishing the entire bowl! My husband and my friends all ordered the complimentary half-egg, which sounds like a great addition! I should try it next time. Service was quick and attentive, which we appreciated. One of my friends didn't finish her bowl and asked for a to-go box. The server judged her a little bit, which was kinda awkward! Of course it won't taste as good the next day, but if she can't finish it in one sitting, what can she do? Flavorful broth and veggies in my vegetarian ramen, which was the only ramen they could make into a gluten-free ramen. As Jon Snow would say, "winter is coming" and so with that came RAMEN! There is nothing better than making your way through the freezing temps of winter to just hover over a steaming hot bowl of ramen. To be honest, my experience with Fujiya Ramen would never have occurred since the original destination was Ani Ramen just a few yards up the same street, but when we arrived, the wait was 45+ minutes and you had to stand outside in the 6 degree weather. No thank you. As we walked down Bloomfield Avenue, my Yelp app broadcasted Fujiya Ramen and it was below 0.1 miles away -- WHY NOT. Three visits later and boy am I happy to have found this place! I can't compare the two, so I'll wait to try Ani when the time comes. But judging Fujiya on its' own, i can tell you the service is fantastic with quick seating and prompt attention to not only the customer but also the turnaround time with your orders!! I've waited less than 5 minutes after finishing my appetizer before that bowl of deliciousness made its' way to my table. I highly recommend Fujiya to anyone who's looking to just warm up in a very casual, BYOB restaurant around Montclair (another plus). read more

Far better than Ani Ramen down the street, Fujiya is a credible alternative to NYC ramen joints. I've had the tonkotsu and the miso, both of which were comforting and satisfying. The broth has excellent depth of flavor, unlike Ani's, which is thin and reminds me of salt. The noodles are just al dente and they give you plenty of them. Each bowl is also presented appealingly when they deliver it. While the tonkotsu was just as good as you'd expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the miso, which flavor didn't overpower and complemented the broth nicely. For appetizers, I've received complimentary edamame twice, which was fresh and gone in moments, and I've also tried their calamari, which is served with a spicy mayo. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the appetizers are exquisite, but both primed me well for the main course, and portions were large enough that I always had some left over to bring home. It's quiet inside, even when there are other large parties. They have seating at the front window, a long table in the middle with perhaps 12 seats for parties or singles, several tables for two along one wall, two tables for bigger groups along another wall, and a cooking area where you can watch they prepare the food. Drinks are limited to sodas and green tea in a can, which is slightly disappointing. They have a fairly extensive menu (viewable at their website), with several ramen bowls and entrees, so I'm sure I'll find reasons to return. read more

I went here with a girlfriend for dinner and it was delicious! We came on a Tuesday night and were sat immediately. We started with the pork buns, pork gyoza, and Tori Karaage. The buns were very tasty, nothing crazy but delicious none the less. The gyoza were particularly delicious and chewy. The Tori Karaage is a popular dish and was recommended to us by our server. They are essentially boneless dark meat chicken bites that are Panko breaded and fried. The chicken was tender and juicy and there was a spicy mayo dipping sauce. I personally wish I would have opted for the bone in wings, the chicken bites weren't for me, but they were good. I finished with the chashu ramen and added spice and an egg and it was delicious. Wanted to order ramen for takeout and since i've been really dying to try Ani Ramen, I called ahead and was told they're dine-in only? boo! Therefore, i checked yelp and found this place that actually does take out. We ordered the spicy miso ramen and the chasu ramen, got an order of the edamame and some steamed pork gyozu. This place is 7 minutes from my apartment so as soon as i ordered it, i left to pick it up and it was right on time. Everything was labeled which is always really helpful and the girl at the counter, while extremely quiet, was very nice. The inside of the place seems really comfy and inviting. I picked up on a Tuesday around 2:30pm and there was only one other table seated, but still plenty of seating space as i'm sure they do decent on a busy night. The food was really good! the edamame was less saltier than i like, but that's always been a personal preference. The broth for the ramen was delicious and the egg was perfectly hard boiled. The answer to your question: Yes, Fujiya Ramen is (without doubt) better than Ani Ramen house. First time visit- had the Shoyu Ramen and why not Chicken Curry Rice too, maybe I'll have leftovers for later. The very attentive waitstaff brought some complimentary edamame and amuse bouche - a delicious bite of fried octopus (although my description doesn't do it justice), and my ramen came out pretty quick. The broth was clean and light, yet full of flavor. The noodles were on point, I suspect are from the same source as the other noodles in town. The pork chasu was delectable tender and satisfying and the other components in the soup were on point. Not overwhelming, just right. Large amount of fat compared to meat and for $14 for a bowl of ramen I am definitely expecting some meat. It was pretty good in terms of broth but that's really it. My boyfriend had ordered the tonkatsu ramen and he had 2 pieces of pork but one "slice" of pork chashu was just plain fat. Imagine a slice of bacon but much much thinner and literally no meat and all fat. Overall quite disappointing. If I could give zero stars I really would. If you don't want to cross the GWB, head to fort lee and check out Menya Sandaime or go a few doors down to Ani Ramen. read more

Soooo excited about a new ramen place! I just thought daang, just a few doors down Ani Ramen, this place must be the best of the bests. The place was definitely bigger and longer. I'd have to say, I've definitely had better, and this is only edemame we're talking about. Then, our pork dumplings came out shortly after. Again, nothing too spectacular about the taste. It's unfortunate that I have to leave a 2 star review on my second visit here because on my first visit about a month ago, I was all ready to give it 4 stars. The downgrade is because of the vast inconsistency in standard between then and now- when it just opened, the tori kaarage was juicy, generous, and most of all delicious. I came back for it but today it was just tasteless - as if there was no seasoning at all. The pieces of chicken were about half of what they were last time. I'm told by my dining partner that the standard of the ramen is unchanged though so that may be a comfort to some, but for me the star item on their menu is gone.
