Food was good. You have a choice when you come in to go to the built-in table hibachi side (they put on a show while cooking at the table) or the "regular" side. Both are somewhat pricey. Yesterday, we were introduced to Fujiyama Japanese Steak House and Sushi Lounge, located at River City Marketplace near Jacksonville International Airport. My niece requested a 'family party' at her favorite restaurant to celebrate her 5th birthday, a big milestone in the life of a little girl who loves rice. This is the second time recently that I have been to a restaurant for a party, and it was the second time that it seemed like it took forever to get our dinner. However, I don't necessarily fault the restaurant because not all of the attendees arrived on time which meant our waitress had to move us to another table when additional people arrived. I thought she handled it especially well, despite our grumbling. When we were finally seated where we needed to be, the show began as the Hibachi Chef began preparing a meal for about 10 adults and 4 children. He was entertaining, funny, and paid a lot of attention to the birthday girl, even when she hid from the fiery hibachi at the beginning of the show. Later on, when she came back to her seat smiling, she was especially happy when all of us sang Happy Birthday to her twice, both times at the chef's queue. I thought the meal was excellent. My mother-in-law and I had the Hibachi Steak and Shrimp Combos. The steak was prepared perfectly to order--mine medium rare, hers medium. My husband and son both ordered Hibachi Chicken with Shrimp Combos. They were both quite pleased. The combo meals are served with clear soup, a house salad, fried rice and grilled veggies. Other attendees ordered dinners that included salmon, lobster and scallops.Oh, and our little Birthday Girl asked for sushi, which she shared with her uncle and cousin. I have eaten at several restaurants like this throughout the years. I can't say that Fujiyama was any better than the others, mostly because I love this kind of restaurant. However, the food was tasty, the service excellent and "patient", the Hibachi Chef was superb, and everybody had a good time...especially my now 5-year-old niece who asked for a party at her favorite restaurant for her birthday. read more

We ventured to Fujiyama last Friday to start the weekend and for a friends bday dinner. It's located in the Rivercity shopping center, by the airport, which seems to be just blowing up as far as eating and shopping are concerned. We started with a sushi roll while we were waiting for the entire party to arrive. It was a crab, cream cheese tempura creation, the name escapes me, but I can say it was pretty good. Soon we were one to ordering our hibachi entrees... and the signature soup and salads starting making their way to our party. Clear soup was ok... salad was not anything special... even with the ginger dressing. Our server was a bit forgetful and un-attentive, and Mr. Yelp decided to clear his own plate by setting it on a shelf behind us. LOL. So the hibachi chef came out.... he was absolutely hilarious. We were all in good spirits and he laughed and played along with all of our jokes... and did the normal hibachi presentations. (Volcano, shrimp toss etc.) I ordered the shrimp, and they were a tad overcooked. But the veggies and rice were pretty good. There was a bottle of sake ordered at the table, and I did love there was a cucumber slice in the sake glasses... it was a nice mellow addition and I am definitely jumping on the cucumber cocktail bandwagon. The only sauce they served was shrimp sauce. You could ask for ginger, which was decent, but when I asked for mustard sauce, they looked at me like I had a third eye. Extremely poor service, i placed a Togo order and requested extra wasabi and soy sauce for each of the three orders I purchased, and I only received 1?wasaibi and soy sauce for a single serving! I called again to confirm the order after placing it to ensure I would get what I'm paying for and when my food arrived it was the wrong order. So I called to have the manager make it right and they said I must bring my food in to get a refund. How is one parent who is feeding his kids before bed suppose to get in the car drive 28 minutes to return the food just to feed his kid while keeping them awake. You failed to complete the order correctly you should have refunded my money. I highly don't recommend this establishment very shady. read more

NOW, the portions were much, much smaller -- I guess the newness has worn off and in comes the extreme portion control. The rice this time was a long grain rice that was dry where it did not stick at all and jumped on the teppan table for lack of moisture. We each ordered Steak and something combo's. Seems my SO's steak portion was given to another customer -- mine seemed to be the normal portion, but he had less than half a portion. hhmmm..... This chef 'tried' to be funny but wasn't. He kept calling all of the women "Mamee" throughout his entire presentation. He served the shrimp appetizer LAST, veggies next to last; Rice and then meats were served first. Kind of backwards??? Needless to say, I'm only giving 2 stars b/c I've had much, much better service, portions and have had more entertaining at other places. My friends and I, we love Japanese steak houses. We've been to many places in town and it's all been a hit and miss. We've been back to Fujiyama the most because we get great service here, and the food here tasted good. The only drawback I have about this place is the amount of food you get for the price. Portions here are much much smaller than other places, even the meat and shrimp portions. Same food selections, same taste, same corny chef jokes and same ridiculous prices. We went here for lunch and got hibachi for 3 & spent $75.00. Granted that included gratuity & if it was for dinner that would have been one thing but for just lunch? That's also considering that my husband and I only ordered chicken and my daughter ordered shrimp. Their clear soup is one of the best in town, they use a chicken stock where most places use a seafood stock, and the taste is very earthy. We just moved to this side of town and wanted to celebrate our anniversary with Japanese food. We heard from a good friend that the food was "phenomenal." We were easily seated at the hibachi grill. The two hibachis next to us had birthday parties which made the atmosphere fun. Had they not been there it would have been a quiet Sunday. Our hibachi chef did the standard grill tricks and was relatively quiet. Our food was very well on the grill. Our waitress was good.
