I'm normally not a fan of eating at breweries since the food is usually about the same. But I had lunch at Fullsteam recently and I was blown away by the food quality and uniqueness of the menu! I ordered the Carolina-dipped Chicken Sandwich, with a side of the grilled peach salad. It was delicious!! The coleslaw and homemade pickles gave the sandwich a great flavor. I usually get the normal side of fries, but I'm so glad I went for the salad which was sweet and savory in each bite. My husband got the pork sandwich and said it was excellent. Definitely recommend this place for a casual bite to eat! The only downside was that it was a bit pricey, and the cucumber salad was not worth the up charge. Feeling competitive? Come here and have a ping pong match with some friends. I thoroughly enjoyed the pinball machines along the sidewall entrance. There are food trucks that usually along the street so you can grab something and enjoy it with one of the brews on tap. They also have canned brews so you can build your own 4 or 6 back from the fridge selection at the end of the bar. Parking isn't that friendly, but be sure to check out the parking lot right across the street, as it offers standard parking for those aren't great with parallel parking. read more

Stopped in for lunch here with a friend in June and was overall pretty pleased! The entrance was pretty confusing at the time and had a bunch of information up that we needed to download an app, etc. - yet when we arrived at the bar they said we could ignore it and just order directly through them. Not sure if that was vestiges of more firm shut-down days, or what. I got a flight of beers and overall haven't found any beers I particularly like here. I got a fried chicken sandwich that was pretty good, but nothing standout. Have to drop a second star for no longer being pet friendly, as that was previously one of the only reasons to go. This is such a hipster brewery. With ping pong, video games, and billiards... what more do you need?? BOARDGAMES. This place has boardgames people. (I believe everything is free of charge, but I am not sure) the only down side was the slimy texture of the boardgames and a lot of missing pieces-- but hey, what do you expect? It's free and in a brewery. I loved the atmosphere and the honeywhite beer. I went during Mardi Gras, so there was live jazz/blues playing on stage. Came with a big group from work before wandering over to urban axes for the team holiday party. We weren't the only big group there either our server worked her butt off but off. Everyone inside the kitchen was on the ball and she kept things moving and drinks solid the entire time. Probably had 50 people across ours and another group. I had my favorite sammich the Rueben and a side of red beans and rice. All was excellent. Sandwich came out piping hot and while wasn't the NY Style gargantuan monster some places do it was nicely proportionate and the bread didn't soggy up from the kraut so the dressing to sauerkraut barrier was strong. Red beans were great. Some nice sausage bits. There were many things eaten by our group but I didn't hear any complaints. Think we ordered everything off the menu. We had some of their pimento cheese which this non native never had before and it was great. Ended up eating the cheese with a spoon as we ran out of bread. I never know why people drink crappy beer when you've got so many great options locally! The Triangle has experienced a beer renaissance with the opening of Big Boss, Lone Rider and Roth brewery over the last couple of years. And Fullsteam may be the best of all of them but only time will tell! I stopped by during their big summer opening and stumbled in this past weekend at the end of the Durham Costume Pub Crawl. The place is like a lot of breweries, all large and warehousey (is that an adjective?) but I love the discrete entrance! Just a big red F and a large garage door, I feel like I'm sneaking into a speakeasy. Inside it's all industrial with lots of concrete and piping but they've tried to make the place a bit more amenable. Picnic tables out front along with the pinball and ping-pong tables mean you can burn off some calories with your beer! The Yelpy crew was pretty well along in the night so we had a great time tearing around the place. And Brandon, we need a tie-breaker pong game baby! The brews there are solid, along the lines of Lonerider and the only disappointment was that they were out of moonpies for the evening, booo! Fullsteam focuses on brewing quirky beers flavored with herbs and other local goodies. But I still think Big Boss has a beery small edge on all the newbie breweries in terms of smoothness and flavor. But I'll be back again some time soon and while Fullsteam may be great during the summer time, the lighter crowds during the winter time makes it more fun for small groups! I was in Durham visiting a friend for 4 days and this was absolutely my favorite place! It was so much fun and the bartender was awesome! Location wise I would have never seen it -it looks like a bunch of factories/offices and in the middle of nowhere, a total hidden gem. My friend saw the great reviews on yelp and decided to take me there, It's one block away from the Old Durham Bull stadium. When you walk in, it looks like it was an old factory. The front area has a ping pong table, 2 pinball machines, Ms Pac Man and a little arcade bowling game. All the games look like they were from the early 80's! Nostalgia... The second main hall was full of picnic tables and people gathered there to drink. On the left side of this room was a separate bar area which was totally my cup a tea (or beer!). Past the bar in a separate area was a place to play darts which seemed to be the most popular spot. It was right next to the glass that looked into the brewery tanks. There was also a separate area outside for the smokers. Now onto the beers, the great thing about their beers for us ladies is that you can buy a smaller size which is half the usual poor. It's also half the price. I think a regular pour was $4 and $4.50 so half the size would bee $2 & $2.25. I wanted to try all 5 of their signature beers so I did 1/2 pours of each. I'm not normally a fan of IPA's but my favorite ended up being their Rocket Science IPA. I had seconds! The other one I liked was a weird one - Summer Basil and it totally tasted like basil. The first few sips I didn't like but then it gets you! I'm sure people either love this beer or hate it, I ended up liking it a lot. The atomosphere was my favorite part of the place it's lively but not overly obnoxious. The bar table has a long strip of dry erase area where they leave you a bunch of markers and you can write on it or play games - we had a competitive hang man game going! It was so much fun. Fullsteam is a Durhamites staple, it's an evening destination not a bar crawl location, serving average beer but a charming location. Fullsteam carries a lot of nostalgia for me, bringing back memories of me as a little tot (twenty-three year old), having just moved to Durham, trying to meet new people, getting a job, experiencing food trucks for the first time and taking in the beautiful North Carolina weather. Fullsteam is a destination spot for locals and tourists alike; whether you want to enjoy some NC tunes, participate in trivia night (or grab a board game off the shelf for you and your friends to play), join one of their weekly runs, try a flight of beers or just grab a pint, check out the food truck scene or try your hand at some classy video games or darts, Fullsteam is well packed for an evening of fun. If you're looking to experience the true essence of Durham, Fullsteam will give you a great picture. They bring in pint and paint nights weekly, host charity and local events, and don't be surprised if you see families enjoying the space--and LOTS of dogs, especially in the summer time. While the location and atmosphere deserves a five start rating, the beer is questionably great (more of a 2.5-3 star rating for me). I remember when I first moved to NC, not having a lot of beer tasting experience, and I would've argued that the beer is good. However, the triangle is a beer lovers paradise, and after living here for three years and discovering my beer pallet, Fullsteam just doesn't measure up with my newfound standards. My go-to beer at Fullsteam is the Rocket Science IPA, but even so, it won't blow you away. Things to note for the locals: this is a great location to host a birthday party as there's plenty of seating. They DON'T sell pitchers (**my mistake--see owners note below, I tried to order a pitcher back in January 2013, must've not been the case or people on staff didn't know, they DO now offer pitchers!!**) and DON'T make the mistake of ordering a growler and opening it on site, they'll make you dispose of it immediately. If you want to make new friends, sit at the bar and get your chat on. Look for the FREE arcade game and try NidHog for a wild time. I visited with my friend for an early evening one weekend. The bar tenders were incredibly friendly and helpful, allowed us to try a number of beers before we made our decisions. I opted for a flight (the best way to try a new brewery's beers) and got the Deadnettle (a gose), the Triple Creek (a grisette, which leans on the fruity side), the Beasley's (a honey white which was just so so), the Carver (a sweet potato lager) and finally the Working Man's Lunch (a chocolate brown ale). I was a big fan of the gose, as I've started leaning in that direction when drinking beer. The most surprising was definitely be Carver. I didn't think a sweet potato lager would taste good, but I was pleasantly surprised. My favorite was the Working Man's Lunch. A very chocolate-y brown ale, it could very much be a dessert beer. Food is decent and so is the ciders on tap. Seating is uncomfortable, I've gotten stabbed twice in the leg by literally screws in the picnic style seating. They don't even try to heat or cool the space, it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter with 2 months out of the year with it being a tolerable temperature. The service is ok staff are great when ordering always happy to make recommendations, but they are constantly reaching over people to get dishes they THINK are empty without even asking towards the end of the night it's incredibly rude. My friend and I stopped in for a light lunch and beer killing some time before going back to Southpoint. This is a pretty cool place with a lot of seating room and a decent size beer selection. There is a neat little narrow outdoor seating area but it was to cold for that on the day we were there. There are two large rooms for seating that have some games, a stage for maybe live music and some cool old style industrial controls. This place is also dog friendly.. there were several in the room. They must also let you reserve for parties because there was a birthday party getting set up. We opted to go into the third room area where the bar is and a few small tables. We ordered a hot dog and a small chicken salad with pita chips. They had a lot of IPA and Stout beers which is normal for this time of year. I don't like those beers but they had a few lagers and pilsners as well. I tried the paycheck and carver. I really liked the carver. The beer pricing was average but the food was high in my opinion. THe biggest negative for me was finding parking. I am not from the area so there may be places to park, but we ended up parking about 2 blocks away and walking. There was very limited street parking and the only other option was pay to park... which I try to avoid. LOL read more

Yelped the place on my visit to N.C. so I went to check it out. Parking - Very limited street parking and they do have pay lots that you need to download a phone app in order to pay. If your not a local its a pain trying to make sense of it. Location - Place is what it seems to be like an Industrial area, but located next to a few other bars that seem to be pretty cool too. Venue - Place looks like a warehouse from out but when you walk in its pretty big, lots of areas to chill and seat, games, and 2 big main open areas. Staff - I was by my self and they didnt seem too friendly as I've experienced at many other breweries. They weren't rude also but I feel as if they need to loosen up and be a bit more upbeat and sell me the beer and show me samples. Food - Appetizer was good stuff as it should be for bar food. My mom and I stopped in to get a few beers at the end of the day while apartment hunting for my move in February. There were only a few people in the place so seating wasn't an issue. We got a flight with the cider, carver, humid, lily, and frost. My mom wasn't super impressed as she's not of a craft beer fan as I am, but I thought they were all pretty good! Lily was my favorite. The place has a really unique and laidback atmosphere. The only thing was it was pretty chilly outside and they kept the main door open which kept the whole inside cold, which we weren't fond of, but fortunately we both had sweaters on anyways. read more

Imagine if a bar married a sleek independent coffee shop, you'd get this place. I was a little worried when I googled Fullsteam on the map..Wouldn't have even ever considered hanging out here but was going to a concert across the street at Motorco and had time to kill.. was wondering if this was a safe place to venture out to at night. Durham has had a rough rep over the years in places. The atmosphere was even better than the beer. The bar snacks I tried,n peanuts and chips were pretty much above expectation. But it was the social component that won me over and would make me come back to hang out and try more beer. It's a pleasant, quirky, visually intriguing and not menacing or threatening, I could see myself coming on my own and just cradling a cold one, or even bringing a LAPTOP (which I saw someone doing). I've been coming to the downtown Fullsteam location for over ten years and despite all the huge changes taking place around them this brewery stays true to it's mission established when they first opened their doors. Beautiful beer from the beautiful South - and now they have a full food menu. Ping pong and games are finally back now that the covid protocols have loosened and the vibes are warm and casual - thanks to a staff that are helpful and genuinely interested in maintaining relationships in our community. The construction out front is annoying but there is street parking all along Geer Street and side streets behind the tavern so don't let the developers deter you from visiting. Fullsteam is great on a weeknight for trivia or another one of their standing events and their beer club Scythe and Sparrow comes with some sweet perks like 20 ounce pours, early release beer and discounts on merch. One of my favorite past times is posting up at a picnic table, humbling someone on the ping pong table and seeing friendly familiar faces. I'll be back tomorrow for the new patty melt and a hazy IPA! read more

A few years ago I would have given Fullsteam an unquestionable 5 stars, but times have changed. They continue to make outstanding beers using locally sourced ingredients when possible. The staff continues to be helpful and friendly. But since they opened their kitchen outside food is not allowed. This might not sound like a big deal, but Fullsteam used to be a place you could bring a homemade or locally purchased plate of food or bag of snacks and share it with friends - or make new friends sharing it- while enjoying a Fullsteam beer. Now outside food is not allowed, limiting eating to what they make (which is good, but does not promote the same kind of community feel). Also since the kitchen opened dogs are no longer allowed inside. This is a huge loss for dog owners and dog lovers. read more

Swung by Fullsteam on a Saturday evening as my friends and I were waiting to eat at a nearby restaurant. It is a incredibly convenient location near a number of great restaurants. Because of its location in Durham, there's only street parking. The ambiance is perfect for group gatherings, watching sports, grabbing a casual bit and having a drink. You could play ping pong, throw darts, watch a live bands, play board games, etc. I ordered a local root beer and the deviled eggs. The shallot vinaigrette topping really puts a unique twist to a classic deviled eggs. I didn't taste as much of the typical smoky flavor and more of a refreshing slightly tart flavor that paired well with the eggs. I will definitely come back especially for the ambiance. read more

Friday was my second time checking out Fullsteam and I am a total fan. The location is cool because it gives you a feel of downtown Durham and is located next other breweries/bars. When in downtown we typically park at a central location and walk which is usually a 5-10 minute walk. You can find some free parking after a certain time in downtown. When it comes to beer I love IPAs and their Rocket Science is pretty great! My friend had the Fearrington Spring and the Alexis saisons and I tried both. Needless to say, I'll be getting the Alexis saison next time I go! read more

If I don't talk about my Fullsteam Brewery experience, I feel like I'm doing all beer lovers wrong. I am very excited to say that I recently had one of the most pleasant brewery visits that a young man could ask for. Fullsteam Brewing Company is actually located in the heart of downtown Durham - so all Raleigh citizens can take a trip whenever they feel like it. I walked into the confines of Fullsteam with the intentions of grabbing a quick sixer and heading straight to my next destination. But after looking around my peripheral, I realized that I wanted to take my time and explore this nice new beer joint. Everywhere you look, Fullsteam is decorated with interesting knick knacks that truly drawn your attention. I really enjoyed looking at the brew room which was located directly behind a set of glass windows on the other side of the main bar. Not only does Fullsteam serve growlers, but they also sell six packs of many of their famous beers. For those of you who really like to mix and match, Fullsteam allows you to do for the low price of, $12! I definitely recommend the Basil brew and the Rocket Science IPA! read more

I was super excited about coming here with a few friends to grab a bite and beers. The menu sounded awesome. However when I got there, I found out that the kitchen is under renovation. I did like that the place is dog-friendly, so we were able to bring our dog. It was a bit noisy inside. I imagine during the warmer months that it's not quite as loud with the doors open. Last issue was that it took forever at the bar to put in an order. That was a little frustrating. I'm glad they serve flights so you can sample several beers. We found Fullsteam Brewery over 4th of July weekend after discovering the Durham Food Hall was closed for the day. We were grateful Fullsteam was open and arrived around 1 p.m. There was a blend families, young professionals with the day off and overall a younger crowd. This part of town reminds me of Portland and the brewery was similar. Feels like a converted warehouse with the hipster flair of 2010. One note to consider, the AC was not running so consider going at night or on a cool day. They do have outdoor seating that in the shade looked comfortable. I could envision a cool party here, maybe for a graduation/ wedding? We ordered the pimento cheese grilled cheese, burger, and chicken nuggets and 2 beers that totaled $60. My husband found a fun farm house ale with mint that was refreshing on a hot day. We think they were short staffed in the kitchen so our food did take about an hour to arrive and then some of the items like our fries were cold. The pimento cheese on my sandwich was great but sandwich seemed rush and wasn't cohesive. On a different day, I would bet the food is excellent. For us, we would go back for a beer in the fall. read more
