Came here for the Open Mic Comedy Show, which they have on Fridays at 8pm, and had a great time! Was recommended the "Amateur Hour- Tropical Colada Fruited Seltzer" (smoothie-style hard seltzer with pineapple, orange, coconut, and nutmeg) when I asked for something sweet and the least "alcohol-y" haha, it was pretty tasty! Ambiance is relaxed, service is great. There's a free parking lot and lots of nearby street parking. 10/10 would recommend, awesome place to hang with friends! read more

I have loved this place since I first met here with @bikedurham for community meetings in the before times. I stopped by a few times during the pandemic and ate with the food trucks that were here and enjoyed open mic night with my daughters, but hadn't been inside for years. They have added a game room and other seating amid the brewing tanks. It's a very chill, fun vibe, and, of course, their libations are all beyond the pale. I've been drinking their Painkiller riff (they call it a hard cider. I call it tasty goodness!) at a local restaurant for a month or so now, so thought I'd get it on tap here. The nice bartender said "You want it as a slushie?" I had no better answer than "Of course!" He even put an umbrella bendy straw in to complete the tiki-ness of the drink! We came here because it was beautiful outdoors that day and they had music! I ordered a white wine with peach mimosa and hubs ordered a brew. Both were ok and we didn't stay long because they were re paving the seating area and since we brought the pup she would be really dirty laying in that. We may try again once they finish that. The drinks: there's a large overhanging chalkboard menu with amusing drink makes. However, there's not much info of what's in them or the prices. To get that info is less obvious in that you have to walk up to the counter to see a couple laminated menus with all the description you could want. Drinks range from $7-$8. Even then being an alcohol newb I got lost in the options. Helpfully though the barista listened to what I wanted and offered me a sample in a shooter cup. I asked for something sour, fruity and popular, and got a passion fruit drink which did get me tipsy as a lightweight. The cub was tall and slim like a flute. The flavor was nicely balanced between sour and fruity, like if you took the natural sourness of lilikoi passion fruit up a couple notches. As someone who has lived in Hawaii, I approved. Location: Durty Bull Brewing Company is a bit of a Frankenstein indoor outdoor location. It's located outside of the bustling shop area in a bit of a residential zone which is quieter. The whole sector has an industrial turned upscale pub, but Durty Bull has the feeling of being a few years from that. Definitely has more of a neighborhood community center/frat house vibe than anything posh. Which it so happens I prefer. The issue with this is that there is some infrastructure issues to iron out. Issues: The expanded outside seems like a response to the complaints of the humid inside. It is a concern as the space inside is tight with people congregating under the air conditioner which also happens to be in front of the enter/exit door. And i was there at night when it was 74 degrees outside! The outside was actually preferable to being inside. The floor plan in general isn't my favorite, as it did seem like the relatively small interior space, various leftover walls and makeshift elongated walkway could lend itself to spilled drinks. Maybe the steel walkway is a response to such concerns to even out traffic flow. It's good that the owners are listening to complaints, as the open mic comedy special being outdoors seemed like a new thing. I didn't mind standing with a beer outside, though there was several types of picnic tables underneath tents and a food truck. Overall: Durty Bull Brewing Company definitely passed the vibe check for me. I liked the drink and the willingness to laugh that the patrons had. The area felt safe to be drunk in (there was even a lady with a baby strapped to her). $7 is more than I really want to spend on a drink, but at least I can say here there is an honest effort, and the atmosphere is there, in its crude, down home way. read more

They had a lot of unique sounding sours on the menu, so I went with one of those (can't remember the name), but it was solid. This brewery is located in more of an industrial part of Durham and looks like it was an old warehouse at one time. There is a chain link fence around the perimeter of the location. Access to the tap room is a metal ramp type of set up. But I kind of like the industrial feeling to it. There is outdoor tables with umbrellas, corn hole outside and also indoor seating. The girl that was working there on the day we went was very nice and helpful Parking is good. You can park inside the chain fence but also on the street. The only negative to me is there were a lot of IPAs and sours, which I dont care for.. so that is more my problem than theirs! LOL! They did have a lager on draft and it was actually one of the better beers that we tried all day. I would definitely go back. If you like lagers or light beers for hot days, the lager is a really good choice. read more

Wow, how my review has changed since my first visit. I initially did not like Durty Bull and avoided it for years and that was my bad. Their beer has improved so much and I love the beer slushies that they offer. The outdoor vibe is great and they host really great events (trivia twice a week for the win!). The staff are still super welcoming and friendly. I appreciate having a go-to spot that doesn't get as crowded as other bars near Rigsbee. On the beer side, the menu continues to grow and I really appreciate the willingness to collaborate, whether for the opening of Queeny's or another Bull City Beer Runners birthday. Bull City Beer Runners (meet at Durty Bull every Tuesday at 7:00pm!) aside, there's always a whole host of cool things things going on at the brewery from the holiday market to music and comedy. In town and went here using our Groupon on casual Thursday night. The brewery is located on a quiet side street so there was plenty of parking available. Our Groupon came with flights so we were able to choose from the many options of beer they had ranging from Sour IPAs to wheat beers. We really enjoyed the Right Round which was their Raspberry sour IPA. The rest of the beers were tasty as well. They also have the Dankery food truck outside every time the brewery is open to service your hunger. They serve some of the best friend chicken sandwiches around! The night we went they had an open mic comedy show in the back which was nothing short of hilarious, seems like this runs weekly. They also have other events which go on during the course of the week. We will definitely be going back!! read more

The whole "storage shed converted into a brewery" type of ambience is so quintessentially Durham. This is the kind of place that you'd pick if you're feeling like you want to hang out with some close friends or family without having to go through the headache of downtown Durham parking. If you're looking to end up in Shooters in a couple of hours though, I'd probably pick a rowdier bar with a younger crowd. They have two "rooms" inside, and a large projector screen in the main room that shows the big basketball games. There's seating outdoors as well with cute strings of lights hanging overhead. Best brewery in Durham? No. Creative beers? Yes. On this visit I was able to try several small pours of Durty Bull beers, none of which super impressed me. A few of the beers that I did like included the Durty Bull Blonde Sour, Brett's Cinnamon Apple Ale and Durty Bull BBA Blackberry Sour. The taproom is smaller but they do have an outdoor seating area. Dropped by on a Thursday afternoon to check this place out. I tried out one of the sour ales (King of the Beach) which was tasty. Im not a huge beer drinker so the fact that I liked it says alot. The designs of their cans are super fun and eye catching. The staff was extremely nice and helpful in picking out one of the ales on tap. They also have a gravel parking lot (and of course street parking when that gets full). There's outdoor seating and a permanent food truck located there too. With so many taprooms in Durham, this is probably our third option or so but it's growing on us. We enjoy their stout and were even here for a beer dinner pairing a few years ago. The interior space is small but there are plenty of tables outdoors to facilitate social distancing and food trucks. They've also hosted events in the past featuring local artisans and food trucks. They have a wide selection of options, from IPAs to sours to hard seltzers & more depending on the day. I got a flight, and every beer was a hit (even the ones I tried that were outside of my usual picks). Durham's got a new brewery town, tucked around the corner from the DIY district (Fullsteam/Motorco). At about six months old, the small space is established, but isn't much to write home about. You'll find several basic picnic tables outside and bar seating + community tables within. They're already putting on a variety of events here (cask tappings and more) and are partnering up with some local breweries to collaborate. But, from the beers that I tried from Durty Bull, they're mediocre compared to their competition. read more

Very mediocre beer in a overly hot warehouse location. Came on a Sunday when it wasn't too busy, but they were out of a few of the beers I wanted to try. Ended up getting a flight of 4 different beers (Sippy-Cup Blueberry/Strawberry, Sippy-Cup Mango/Tangerine, Bonus Cup Stout, and The Brutest Brut IPA). My favorite out of the bunch was Bonus Cup Stout, but not the best stout I have ever had. The Sippy-Cups were quite sour and tart even though they were not listed under the sour section. Awesome brews. We tried the stout which was hearty and slightly malty and sweet. It was 12.5 ACv. We also had the lager and it was a hefty 13 percent alcohol. Both were to go in growlers. An added plus was mikes vegan hotdog truck parked there on Tuesdays. read more

Durty Bull is a little up-and-coming brewing company born out of the back of a repurposed brick building in Durham. While small, I think they've got the heart to carry them further. Pros: 1. They specialize in sour and barrel aged beers, but have a decent selection of more traditional style and unique flavors. 2. Often have food carts available on-site 3. Also do other events, for example they had a beer and art class when I went going on. 4. Outdoor seating 5. Dog friendly Cons: 1. Inside seating is limited and a little less than cozy. 2. The atmosphere of the venue very much feels like a small brewery with big ideas that are slowly coming to fruition. Between the gerry-rigged walkways, the repurposed building it's situated in, the benign surrounding area, and small taproom, it will take some time for DB to show its true colors. --- What to get: I tried the Ginger Weisse and the Red Wine Barrell Aged Brett. Okay craft beer in plastic cups.... We decided to check out this spot yesterday after discovering one of their bottled beer at Whole Foods. The tap room is located inside an old garage or warehouse. The indoor portion has a large projection screen, Mario cart for the kids & three tables. Their beers certainly suggest that they are putting in effort. The artwork on their bottled beer is quite good too. Beers that we wanted to try listed on their website, bourbon barrel-aged blackberry sour ale & rhubarb beirliner weisse, we no longer on tap when we got there. So, we opted for others. I had the Brettanomyces IPA & my wife had the Blonde Sour Ale. Now, I don't consider myself as a beer nerd or an expert, so keep in mind this is my opinion. I felt the IPA was odd tasting and make me think of prison hooch as it warmed up. A friend with us had the same beer and struggled to finish it. My wife's sour ale was quite tart. Not that bad though. I suppose we could have tried some other beers in plastic cups, but we decided to just forgo it and head to Fullsteam for a glass. Who knows? I might be back someday. read more

I can't say enough about the awesomeness of this place!! I first discovered Durty Bull in early spring of 2018. Matt the owner/bartender was super friendly and welcoming as soon as my partner and I walked in (with our puppy too!). The beer was great and we loved all the game choices, from old school Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, to pinball and board games. This is a great place to hang out with friends and family! Fast forward several months to my partner's 30th birthday. I was on the hunt for a laid back, yet cool place to throw her a surprise party. I contacted several places with not a lot of luck. Then Durty Bull popped in my mind! Matt was immediately responsive and helpful about renting out his space, along with getting me in touch with local vendors to rent tables and chairs. The prices was so reasonable and the location is great, not to mention the amazing beer! I threw my partner the best surprise party! The bartender that night was so down to earth and appreciative of our business. Set up and clean up was a breeze and we were able to bring in our own food and decorations. Great brewery to come and hang out in the patio. They sometimes have food trucks, events, musicians, and handmade craft market. Their beer selection is good as well. They have board games that you can play with your friends and they also have Nintendo games. There's parking around and I've never had issues finding a parking space.
