Thank God I didn't read the reviews before coming in here. I genuinely enjoyed my visit, I came here to buy some rocks for my fish tank and stayed much longer admiring their stock. Prices are fair and the pets looks fairly well kept. The store itself is not too pretty. Wonderful owner, she greeted me well. Had some needed questions to be answer about certain things. Was well stocked with water treatment bottles for fresh aqauriums, and had diverse food for aquatic animals. Had a large selection going on, and prices were fair and fishes all looked well too!! Will be coming back as a returning customer. I think it's important to support small businesses instead of going to petco and petsmart since most of the times aquatic help can be second guessing at times, and buying from amazon!! This is a great place with a wonderful owner! The owner has many turtles, fish, and other tropical animals and she takes great care of them. My apartment manager has been getting his fish/supplies here for over 20 years so he recommended it and I really trust his opinion. Definitely stop by if you are looking for an aquatic friend! The quality of fish is amazing here and it's cheap! There are many other animals available too and you can get grooming for your dog done. There is private parking too! Would def come back. Beta fish here last much longer than Petco or Petsmart and you pay less. read more

This is probably one of the WORST fish stores I have ever been too. As a seasoned reefer, I have been to many aquatic stores that specialize in both salt water and freshwater fish. I recently moved into the area and was looking for some new stores close by. I read the reviews online and saw they were mixed so I chose to go in and see for myself. The tanks were disgusting, they were filled with algae, dead fish, and even plastic floating in the water. There was no separation of the freshwater and saltwater fish. I was very upset as a animal lover to see these poor fish in this type of environment! I recommend that NOBODY purchase any aquatic life from this store!!!!!!! They need to be shut down and someone needs to rescue these fish and give them the proper care! I have attached a photo of the tank with plastic floating in the water! read more

I went back to the store and the guy there was very rude and did not care that he sold me a sick Tortoise. He would not replace or even say sorry. When I called and asked for a very simple thing they said they had it in stock. After making the drive I was passed around to three different people. Usually, that's ok: I like people and I'm fine with meeting more. Except they weren't as keen of rmeeting me. One pointed and grunted at me, the other sneered at me for taking them away from their smartphone. Back at the original person, the one I just talked to on the cellular phone and the one who said they had said what I wanted in stock. She led me around the store trying to sell me unrelated items. Not only did they not have what I wanted they were incredibly adept at wasting almost a half hour of my time. They kept telling me someone was coming. Was it Jesus? Was Jesus coming? It must have been a metaphor since no one came. But they were certainly happy to get me in and to try to sell me on other things. Made me wait two weeks and drove 20 miles to get a wrong order. I called over and over confirming that I would like female Halfmoon bettas and she would reassure me over and over that it was... the day came, I went, she handed me a male Delta tail betta fish... had to wait another 20 minutes ( waiting for her to get off the phone ) to get a chance to talk to her again. read more

Likes: Pretty cool store, lots of selection of freshwater fish including 4 angelfish tanks (my favorite kind of fish). They also have a huge selection of plecostemus including various sizes - someone bought one while I was in the store that must've been 7 inches long. They also had several huge arowana fish, probably 3 feet long or more, the big one was going for $500. I also liked how they had 3 discus tanks ranging in price from $20 to a somewhat ridiculous $70, but one would hope you get what you pay for. The fish looked healthy and the store was well organized with various aisles. I bought myself a $20 angelfish while I was there which is a bit pricey but he was a unique color so I bought it. Dislikes: The prices weren't always clearly indicated on the tanks which was somewhat annoying. Also, not all of the staff seemed that enthusiastic about helping me. The back room is disorganized with empty aquariums all over the place and no prices listed on them. Parking situation is terrible, you have to find somewhere on the street. I did not see anything having to do with puppies in the store, which some other reviewer mentioned, but if they do sell puppies I won't be going back. read more

This fish store is amazing. Alil pricey but still not expensive. The owner (I believe) was Maggie. She was lovely. Although she was alil busy doing her duties around the shop, she still answered all questions and concerns. She helped me be ALOT more informed about my beta fish. She also told me about a solution to put inside the tank to make the water more healthy. I definitely will be back again. I have been an occasional customer to this store for the past couple of years and had to write a review as I find a lot of the negative comments here are not justified and fair. I first visited two years ago when I had a sick betta that was not eating. The owner was very nice and helpful and not only provided a lot of useful advice but she gave me two cubes of frozen bloodworms to help with my fish. Since then I have been coming back occasionally and had never had a negative interaction. I like the selection and variety of products not offered in mainstream pet stores like medication, test kits, small sponge filters. I think the fish are well taken care of. The female bettas, for example, were not in cups but in a properly filtered sorority tank. I have purchased an Amazon Sword, which is growing new leaves in my tank and didn't have issues with snails. My most recent purchase was a beautiful and healthy koi betta, which was actually cheaper than what I saw in Petsmart. Last time they also had cherry and yellow shrimp. I recommend Fumi's! read more

Zero stars if I could. Do not support this place if you love animals. The owner of this shop rents out a space to another person who sells reptiles and rodents. When I went in to the store I was absolutely disgusted with what I saw in said "rented space". Rats were eating each other, several adult rabbits were kept together in an empty tiny cage, mistreated birds, filthy enclosures etc..... I started taking photos to prove this and they made me delete them and kicked me out of the store. The Fumi's staff's poor defense was that those weren't their animals and they belonged to the guy who rents the room. Whether they are Fumi's animals or not doesn't matter considering they still take rent money from the dude who rents out that room and abuses animals. They keep their fish in filthy conditions as well. Totally unacceptable. Wish they would shut down. read more

I used to drop by here when i lived closer to mid-city. Their selection is vast and always seemed pretty healthy. They weren't terribly helpful with the more specific questions i had, but hey, the questions were pretty specific =P What sets this place apart as different from other fish stores is the size range of the fauna they carry. They have some larger tanks and definitely carry inhabitants (sharks, rays, etc.) that would entice the 50+ gallon crowds. Of course they also have the standard range of fresh and saltwater fishies for those of us who are more space-restricted. Plant seleciton was decent too. Gentrification destroyed our neighborhoods, and businesses like this one was affected the most. I grew up in this community and this business always boomed! She was always packed with customers. In the last 5 years she gave up. I feel sorry for people who own businesses in gentrified neighborhoods. Rich people do more harm than good, pay a visit at this store and find out for yourself. She had the best fishes and animals in that part of L.A. Sadly, never again. Love this little mom 'n' pop pet store! I wanted to find some fish and aquarium decor that wasn't "mainstream" or something you would only find at a generic store so I decided to explore this place. I came on the perfect day. Praise the Lord! I was there and the owner happened to be on the phone handling some business and I got to explore the store a bit first. When she was free I inquired about the location of the aquarium decor and she told me she just got a new shipment in a box and to help myself to what was inside. This was probably the most fun I ever had shopping for decor because I got to see what was in the box and put it on the shelf. Hahaha! I felt like a temp employee exploring all the decor. When I found the one I wanted I stopped stocking and then inquired about their aquatic plants. I never had real plants in my aquarium before so this was all new to me. She showed me several that were easy to maintain and then also showed me a cool bubble machine that was easy to hide in an aquarium. I loved it! Check them out! read more

Fumi's is the best tropical fish store in Los Angeles in my opinion. It's kind of crazy because it used to be even better a couple years ago. They had the largest and healthiest selection of fish. It has since downsized a bit but it's still has the largest and healthiest selection in LA. Their prices are also the cheapest or at least competitive. I remember getting my first 60 gallon aquarium here. The build and quality held up and I've been very satisfied with most, if not all, of the fish I purchased here. They also have a reptile section and dog grooming section as well. I'm thinking about what kind of set up to start and when I do, Fumi's will be my first stop. Maybe my only stop. If you like cichlids or other fish, I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed! Bonus for being a mom and pops shop :) read more

We scoped out our local PetCo which had some not so informative kids working there so we decided to look elsewhere. Fumi's inspired me to set up a fresh water tank for my 5 year old son and were extremely knowledgable! Healthy fish at a great price, what more could I ask for? I can think of at least one thing: more other PET stuff. I wish they had more of a selection of cat and dog supplies but it is a fish store. I love to go here with my son just to look around. They have loose birds in the store, that actually frighten me since seeing Alfred Hitchkock's "The Birds" as a child. They have snakes, mice/rats, salt water fish, turtles, sea jellies, and more! The owner and employees are always friendly and welcoming and the price for fish and fish food is better than at the large pet supply chains. read more

I have recently started a 60 gallon freshwater tropical tank with my boyfriend, and we have tried out a lot of different pet stores, but Fumi's does have a great selection. There is one staff there (casey) that is really knowledgeable, although I can't say that all of the staff are good, Ask for casey to help. If you ever have questions about which type of fish will get along with another kind, he will tell you. They have an awesome collection of cichlids, jack dempseys, green terrors, the crowd pleasers such as the discus and blood parrots, but one thing that I would have to say is that sometimes they miss label the fish, or they are misleading. I got a blue clawed lobster, that they claimed were blue lobsters, actually, my lobster will never turn blue like the australian electric blue lobsters, but will be orangy brown with dark blue claws. Trivial? But disappointing. And they sold us a upside down catfish, which we couldn't find any info online about....it was actually an asian upsidedown catfish (very different). But if you have done the research yourself, and you already know what type of fish you want in your aquarium, Fumi's will probably have it. read more

This was the first store I went to since coming from the Bay Area, and we wanted to see some of the amazing animals they had to offer compared to up where we live. What I found was a store full of mistreated animals ! It takes a few minutes to clean a tank for reptiles or fish. They had too many animals all together in the same enclosures, and gave several different species of reptiles the same exact care and lighting. 20 baby savannah monitors all together in the same cage using one tiny bowl for water and one place to hide, covered in their feces. Same for leopard geckos. Keeping animals supposed to be in 40 gallon tanks in a 10 gallon. Nice selection and they were helpful but the animals are not taken care of and will most likely have health problems. read more

Small selection of saltwater usually out of stock on everything but the freshwater tanks are really clean and the guy who works there on Monday's is chill, doesnt smell so bad in here. The Asian lady who owns the place is better left alone because she has anger problems she wouldn't go down 1$ on a 40$ coral which is sad for first time customers who drove half an hour to get there.. Overall if it wasn't for the cleaners and nicer worker this place would be a 1 star but still aquarium city and vivid are the places to go to. read more

It takes time and mileage to get to places so businesses must be honest whether or not they have products in stock. I have been a huge animal lover my entire life, and have very mixed feelings about pet stores in general because I am always very wary of where the animals come from, how they are cared for, and making sure they go to good homes. However, I have had many, MANY animals during my lifetime (many rescued, some not) and therefore am always in one pet store or another buying supplies for them. This is one of the worst ones I have seen. An acquaintance of mine recently purchased a tarantula from this pet store, and when he decided he didn't want to keep her, I offered to take her. I needed to get some supplies for her and was curious about the shop she came from, so I made the 30 minute drive to check it out, and was very disappointed at what I found. The shop itself is superrrr dingy. As other reviews have noted, the tanks look very dirty to me, things are strewn about everywhere, and majority of the animals did not look healthy to me. One of the very first things I noticed when I walked in was a room to the right with a glass window. On the other side of the glass were two wire cages (like, for parakeets) - the bottom one housed an adult African Grey Parrot, and the top one housed two younger African Grey's. The cages were hardly taller than they were, and the two younger ones were both lying on their bellies with their wings spread out. It was super hot that day and it was hard to tell what the temperature in that room was (if there were any fans, etc.) because the lights were out. Regardless, the birds did not look well. I left them for a minute to explore the rest of the shop, and there was a woman sitting behind the register who never looked up, acknowledged my presence, or offered to help me with anything. I couldn't find anything for any animals other than fish, which I suppose makes sense since it's primarily a tropical fish store, but when I asked the lady about supplies for my tarantula she said the guy who "has the tarantula's isn't in, and won't be back til later." Okay? I wasn't there when this one was purchased so I don't know how that worked out, but kinda weird to keep them elsewhere and have a "tarantula guy" who apparently brings them in to sell, or something? Why not just keep them at the shop so that people know you are selling them in the first place? I don't get it. I also pointed out to her that her parrots didn't look great, to which she replied that the two in the top cage were babies. If they were babies, they were at least nearly juvenilles/teenagers/had lost their baby fluff and had adult feathers, and I thought that was strange behavior for how grown they were. That aside, they were in very small cages with hardly any room to turn around or stand up, and I'm sure sitting on that wire all day is painful for their feet. Poor babies. Very disappointed with this pet store. Please do NOT support them. The animals are sickly, the shop workers are completely disinterested, and the whole place is dirty. read more

I came here trying to look for plumbing parts for my new tank setup that I couldn't find at home depot. The neighborhood is not good IMO but regardless of that, the quality of the livestock was not good. I saw a lot of fish with disease and one tank was absolutely covered in red slime which is an indication of very poor water quality and lack of water flow. It is because of the lack of respect for the lives of the animals and overall lack of maintenance that I will never return. If you do go here I would suggest doing a quarantine every time, and never use the water from the bag. I should also mention that they had none of the plumbing parts in the store, even though on the phone they said they did have it. If I'm going to have to special order anyway, I may as well do it myself and have it delivered to my door. read more

I have not shopped here in several years because I went by one day to get some fish supplies and noticed they were selling puppies. I asked the man where the puppies came from and he showed me papers from the midwest. I told him that these dogs were from puppy mills and he said, "yeah, maybe." I got into a discussion about how it was inhumane and gave him my business card to see if we could work out a small-breed rescue plan, similar to Orange Bone. He referred me to the owner. I sopke to her and let her know how I felt. She so obviously did not care and got on the phone to stop the conversation with me. Fast forward to today. I just called to see if they stopped selling puppies entirely. Although the woman (same one?) who answered the phone said they don't have any right now, she said they have not stopped selling puppies entirely. I informed her that I will not buy pet supplies from any store that sells puppy mill pups. She simply said, "Okay, bye." I urge others to call and tell them the same. Maybe we can end the sale of puppy mill puppies in mid-city and k-town together with a group effort to boycott these stores. Activists tend to focus on mall stores like Barkworks and Pet Love, but forget about all of the lower profile shops in less affluent areas. Its a shame because I need some dechlorinator for my pond today and they are nearby with a good selection of fish supplies. I used to like this place. read more

I used to go here when they were across the street from where they are now but stopped when my fish died. The other day I went to start raising fish over again. The people where very helpful. There is a guy who I always see working there and he's always the most help. They also have quite a few different fish and other animals to choose from. I'll probably continue going here. read more
