Fun Hog Ranch, Las Vegas: Down home dive. Bit of Leather & bit of Bear.
    Gary I.

Fun Hog Ranch looks like a Southern roadhouse in Louisiana instead of being way off of the Las Vegas Strip. It's a dive, but in a good way. Enough widescreen TV's to entertain you with music videos and sports if the bar-t is in the mood.  Lots of men who look and act blue collar although they may be professionals in "real life". In old school terminology FHR may be called a Levi cruise bar. This place may be the closest as you're going to get to a leather or Bear bar in Las Vegas.  On their website, there seems to be a "Leather Night" on the first Saturday of every month where leather, uniforms, rubber is the theme night  Anyway, it's a down home man's bar where you can come as you are. Looks like a man cave without any pretensions. Bartenders are friendly as well as many of the customers.  4 stars for what you see is what you get.  PS Be ready for acrid cigarette smoke in your eyes and on your clothes and hair.

Just wandering around while friends were still asleep, exploring a bit, and it ended up being one of the best random stops I've made. Best dollar I've probably spent in Vegas was on that hot dog. No joke. Simple, quick, and it hit exactly the way it needed to. Sometimes that's all you want. This place isn't fancy at all, and that's exactly why it works. It's a break from the Strip. No pressure, no over the top pricing, just a real, old school Vegas feel. You walk in and it's got character. You can tell it's been around and has history behind it. It's one of those places that reminds you Vegas wasn't always about high end everything. There's still spots like this that keep it real. Ever since I found it, I've made it a point to stop by when I'm in town. It just became part of the routine. Great way to kick off the day, or honestly anytime. Love this place.

The notes were of spices, dried fruits, toasted caramel, and dark cocoa. The earthy hop notes bring in the extra fresh kick, rounded by a malty sweet finish. For dinner I ordered the Veganes Schnitzel which is a meat-free style of schnitzel made with soy protein and tempting spices, breaded and served crisp with potato-cucumber salad, cherry tomatoes and cranberries and it was completely vegan. I found both the beer and Schnitzel to be very flavorful. The live entertainment really added to the German experience. However, it was our server Celeste who really stole the show. She was friendly and sassy and as a softball player, she knew how to give a proper paddling to anyone who ordered a shot.

The bill ended up being nearly $250, with multiple add on charges throughout the meal. The server did mention ahead of time that there would be a charge for the kids cup since they don't offer disposable cups with straws, but paying almost $9.50 total for a child's apple juice and a basic non-souvenir cup felt excessive. The pretzel also didn't clearly indicate that the beer cheese was an extra charge, and there was an additional "house charge" added to the bill as well. The food itself was decent, but the overall experience became uncomfortable after payment when the tip amount was questioned. Between the pricing and the extra fees, the experience just didn't feel worth the cost.

I had a blast, even though the front bar was really the only section open on a Wednesday night. I arrived around 10:45pm and there was no cover. In the club, for the first hour there was a small crowd there, and then it picked up the later it got. It was still a fun time. The music was jammin, go go boys were great, and it had a fun atmosphere. I had a conversation with a local who explained the layout of the full nightclub and the different sections. That was convincing enough, so we stopped by for some drinks. Ambiance (3/5): Pretty much your average bar. And a small one at that. There's some seating around the L-shaped bar and a few high tops surrounding the perimeter. They will put on a show here and there by juggling bottles, offering free swigs of mixed drinks, and other debauchery. Service (4/5): Given that it's a small bar, you're not competing with a lot of people to get the bartenders' attention. With that being said, they had multiple bartenders and that definitely helps. Pretty good overall. Food (N/A): They don't serve food. Drinks (3.5): I used by BOGO deal (which you can use on anything) for two orange tea shots. Not a lot of bars have the orange Jameson needed to make this shot, so I couldn't say no when I saw it. My excitement died down a little bit when I found out the one shot is $18. Taking the deal into account, it's still a pretty good deal as you're paying $9 per shot. Normally though, $18 is pretty steep for a mixed shot, so they close the gap on the deal by upping the price of the original drink a bit. All good though. Still a chill spot to turn up.

While both locations serve incredible Detroit-style pizza, they each have their own personality. Gray Witch has this cool, witchy, slightly punk-rock vibe, while Red Dwarf leans into a quirky, eclectic tiki-bar atmosphere that's unlike anywhere else in Vegas. The space is surprisingly roomy inside, with plenty of character and a fun atmosphere. The service was friendly, fast, and welcoming from start to finish. One thing I always notice is cleanliness, and while the bathroom is small, it was spotless--which honestly goes a long way for me. They also have a great beer selection, a full bar, and a refreshingly straightforward menu. I appreciate when restaurants focus on doing a handful of things really well instead of trying to do everything. We ordered the White Pie and the Meatsa Meatsa, and I was genuinely shocked when they arrived. Coming from Gray Witch, where I've only had pizza that comes with two slices for roughly $15, I wasn't expecting full Detroit-style pans with six slices each. At around $19 for an entire pizza, the value is fantastic. The standout was absolutely the Meatsa Meatsa. It was phenomenal--loaded with flavor without feeling heavy. The White Pie was also very good, just a little lighter and more subtle. Honestly, it may have suffered from being compared directly to how incredible the Meatsa Meatsa was. I kept feeling like it was missing one little thing, but I'd happily order it again. One thing I love about their Detroit-style pizza is how light, fluffy, and airy it is. In photos, these pizzas look dense and heavy, but they're surprisingly easy to eat. The texture is spot on. I also love that you can build your own pizza, and after looking around, the wings caught my eye as well. I didn't try them this visit, but they looked fantastic and are definitely on the list for next time. I'm also already planning a return trip to try the pineapple pie. Nothing but great things to say about Red Dwarf. Great pizza, great service, great value, and a unique atmosphere that makes the experience memorable. Vegas has a lot of pizza options, but both Red Dwarf and Gray Witch have managed to create something special. They share the same foundation of outstanding Detroit-style pizza, but each has its own distinct identity. Red Dwarf delivers a fun, eclectic tiki-bar experience with incredible pizza, while Gray Witch brings a quirky, witchy, punk-rock energy all its own. They're different, but they complement each other perfectly. Can't wait to come back and keep working my way through both the pizza menu and the drink list.
