Me and my husband just moved here a year ago and had a new born 2 months ago so we decided to get a baby sitter and finally explore flagler beach. We went bar hopping and our favorite was Funky Pelican. Mainly because of our bartender Melissa. She was such a breath of fresh air! We loved having a chat with her! We always ask every bartender we meet, to give us a shot of their favorite shot and she made a super unique one which we love to try new things so I thought it was very cool. Had a friend recommend this place. You never really know how good or bad until you try. So glad we did! First, you are basically on the ocean. Even inside greatvocean views. Second- the food was fantastic. We started with fish dip and Gator bites. The fish dip was good. I think my problem was I had fish dip at Le Tub in Miami last year. This was not quite as good. Still ok though. The Gator bites were outstanding! 2 sauces- a remoulade and a sweet sauce. Both great. I had the shrimp and grits. Omg! Phenomenal! Just get it. My wife had the fish and chips. I don't know who--or what--runs the Funky Pelican in Flagler Beach, Florida, but I'm convinced it's a social experiment designed by scientists who hate joy. First of all, the moment I walked in, a seagull stared directly into my soul. Not at me. Into me. I'm 99% sure it was the manager. The hostess told me the wait would be "15 minutes," which apparently means "until the sun burns out and the oceans recede." I aged three fiscal quarters in that lobby. By the time I sat down I no longer remembered the taste of food, the sound of laughter, or my own last name. When the server arrived, she placed a fork on my table that was bent at a perfect 43° angle, like it had just finished fighting for its life in a silverware war. My iced tea tasted like disappointment diluted with water from the Fountain of Regret. I ordered the shrimp and grits. What arrived was a dish so confused it needed therapy. The shrimp looked like they had been yelled at. One of them was staring at me with what felt like personal resentment. The grits had the texture of mashed drywall. I asked the server if this was normal. She shrugged in a way that communicated, "It is what it is, man. None of us are free." Then came the "garnish"--a parsley sprig that looked like it had been stepped on by Bigfoot and then dried on the dashboard of a 1998 Ford Escort. The pelicans outside weren't helping either. They strutted around like they owned the place, giving me judgmental looks, as if they were offended I wasn't eating the baitfish special. The bathroom? Oh, you mean the Humidity Chamber of Secrets. I walked in and my glasses fogged so aggressively I thought I'd time-traveled. When I finally left, a pelican pooped on my windshield. Not just a normal poop--this thing looked like modern art. I'm talking Jackson Pollock meets lactose intolerance. Overall: 1 star. Would not return unless forced by a court order or lured by a coupon promising free sanity restoration. 8/20/2023 Stopped in for a late lunch or early dinner. Place had a little buzz to it, we opted to sit inside (Real feel temp was 101) but plenty of people outside enjoying to themselves on the deck. We were greeted promptly by our server (wish I knew his name he did a nice job). Started with a Miller Lite and Michelob Ultra (nice and cold) with the fried calamari with marinara sauce, which we both liked. For dinner I opted for the fish and chips with coleslaw and my wife ordered the fish sandwich with a side of coleslaw. Both were excellent and large portions. We took a chance while visiting St. Augustine to drive down here, boy are we glad we did! The town looked busy, but we were seated immediately on the deck with a great view of the ocean. An appetizer of prell and eat shrimp ( perfectly cooked) started our meal. My wife had the wedge salad, a very interesting presentation, and I had the fish and chips. Both entrees were very generous in size. But be careful ordering the Bloody Mary it is a meal on its self. This is a long-time favorite destination of my relatives and I finally got the opportunity to visit. There's definitely a fun(ky) vibe to the restaurant and one of the fun things about it is the outdoor chalkboards on either side of the entrance. Speaking of the entrance, you pass by branded merchandise coming & going. The outdoor patio was bustling with patrons enjoying the beachgoers and adult beverages. My poor NY blood isn't fairing well in the heat & humidity so we sat inside. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. We were brought our food by kitchen staff and had to wait quite a bit before she came back to make sure everything was correct (which it wasn't). Most everyone at the table enjoyed their meal. The fried shrimp were fresh and fries were crisp. I ordered 3 grilled Mahi tacos with fries. The fish wasn't seasoned and the island salsa made my fries soggy. Best View On The Beach! Yes, on the beach. This place is built over the beach with huge glass windows that allow great views of the beach to the right and left and the entire ocean straight out. We were out cruising A1A along the coast and wanted a fun place to enjoy the view, have a drink and try some snacks and we found the Funky Pelican. It was cool, rainy and extremely windy that day so we sat inside, but they do have an expansive deck for outside dining and drinking. We were seated at a side window with a great view of the beach and ocean. Even through the glass window we could hear the waves crashing on the beach. My wife ordered an Unsweet Iced Tea ($3.52) and I picked a Funky Pelican ($10.00) off of the house specialty cocktail list. They do offer several beers on tap and many in bottles. My Funky Pelican was a great tropical drink. Coconut rum, dark rum, banana liqueur, orange and pineapple juice. Fun! We tried the Calamari ($13.00) served with marinara. We would have preferred less breading and more squid flavor. We would not get that again. The Bacon Wrapped Shrimp ($14.00) were much better. Coated in a light pineapple BBQ sauce and topped with a tropical salsa, they were quite tasty. A fun place with a great view. Give it a try. read more

We had been going to the Funky Pelican for more than 7 years, mostly for sunrise breakfasts. Well, we were disappointed to know that the sunrise breakfast was discontinued because I LOVED their French toast. So after a two year hiatus from the restaurant, I wanted to go there to reminisce about the food and atmosphere. We were hoping that the weather would be nice, it wasn't so we couldn't sit out on the deck. Okay, we were seated in the restaurant and we could tell it just wasn't for us. This should be a 2.5 star review but I can only use whole numbers so here we go. In terms of location, ambiance, somewhere to post up and watch the beachgoers...check. It clicks all of these boxes. We came in at 6:20 on a Friday and were told 40 minutes but it only ended up being a 15 minute wait. That's where all the high point marks end. We ordered a crab cake appetizer. It was good, but nothing to get excited about (and it took 1/2 hour for them to come out.! We figured not a big deal, it's busy, BUT dinner was even worse. There were 6 of us so we expected a bit of a wait. We didn't expect to get our food pushing 8:00. When it did come out, the shrimp and grits were lukewarm at best and my wife's rice was flat out cold. The food would have been way better if it were hot, and the service wasn't bad but he didn't really keep us updated at all except to say that they were "crazy disorganized" in the kitchen and that it wasn't his fault. We are on the Harley's headed to our Hotel for the Daytona Bike Week Event 3/2024, we passed this location and you can not help but see this big sign Flagler Beach, the next day before our riding adventure we decided to have breakfast here. It has a fun, beachy vibe, the wait staff was friendly & attentive. We sat outdoors with a great view of the beach/ocean/pier, today was a great day to sit outside, the sunshine was warm & inviting. They had all the favorites on the menu, the portion is just right for 1person not quite enough for 2 adults to share a plate, so just order a plate for yourself, sitting outside your food can get cold quickly especially if you have coffee. My friends and I took a day trip up to Flagler beach to check it out. Whilst there, we stopped to grab lunch at the Funky Pelican. It is right at the main pier in town. When you walk in, you get a beach house vibe that I loved. There is a lot of indoor and outdoor seating that allows you to watch the pier and ocean. Our server was very nice and kept our drinks always full. She also took the time to answer our questions on the menu. I ordered a blackened fish sandwich and it was great! The fish was seasoned perfectly and wasn't overly oily. My friend got the crab cake and the other got the burger. They were very happy with their choices as well. We both got the catch of the day which was grouper. The fish was phenomenal and it was a big portion. We didn't ask market price and we were not told the price. The sandwiches were $27 each. Now if we had known the price, we would have still ordered so I am not complaining. However, I can see where it might be a huge surprise to spend $60 for two sandwiches. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the spectacular view. The food was not edible, the staff were busy texting on their phones and the manager when not on his cell phone stood there with his hands in his pockets and looked like he didn't want to be there. The place was filthy and there was gum stuck to one of the chairs. The bathroom had no toilet paper and looked like it had not been cleaned for a month. I have seen homeless encampments cleaner than this restaurant. Management needs an overhaul. read more

Been to the Pelican a few times when we stay at Flagler. Always been pretty good and on par with the reviews. I had nothing significant to add or detract, so I left no reviews. That changed today. We walked in a little before 2pm and were seated by the hostess. She was very friendly and welcoming. We were seated at a nice table overlooking the ocean. Our waitress soon came by and acknowledged us. She was busy and said she'd be with us soon. She came by and took our drink and appetizer order. The two beers I selected weren't available, so I picked another. My wife's drink came, but not my beer. I get it...they're having to pour my 3rd choice. Appetizer came, but no beer. Then I saw my beer be poured at the bar, and there it sat....and sat. No waitress to be seen. Oh, there she is, engaged in a lengthy conversation with another table. Beer getting warmer...still talking. Beer getting warmer, now she's checking on other tables. I'm oddly fixated on the table across from me with bird poop on it that's been there for a while. Beer getting warmer. Now, I just want to leave. Finally she goes to the bar where she sees my warming, flat beer. Pour a fresh one? Oh no! She takes a straw AND STIRS IT TO RECREATE THAT FRESHLY POURED HEAD!!! Warm beer cheerfully delivered to our table. Check please! We're off to somewhere else. Why would you blatantly do this to a paying customer? We had planned on staying for more drinks and a late lunch, just like we always do when we visit. That plan was ruined. That warm $7 beer cost her at least an extra $15-$20 in tip, and the restaurant, too. It's just disappointing. We've been looking forward to our Flagler trip and for months. This is how it started off. They can do better. EDIT: To add insult to injury, I just realized the waitress charged me for the beer I wanted but they didn't have AND the warm beer. You got me Funky Pelican, but never again!!! Where is the zero star selection? UPDATE: I was contacted by customer service regarding our experience there and my review. The GM offered to refund our tab. It was never about the money, so I asked him to donate any refund to the charity they support, the Seawolf Privateers. While I appreciate the offer, it still doesn't change the fact that the intentional act of attempting to deceptively pass a warm, flat beer to a customer is an indication of deeper issues. However, I will amend my review to two stars based in the fact that management at least tried to make it right. read more

We recently moved to the area, and this was our first official "local" dining experience. The Funky Pelican restaurant is the centerpiece of Flagler Beach, so of course this would be our first place to try! We arrived around 3pm for a late lunch, and it was surprisingly busy. We were told a 45 minute wait to eat outside (which you must do if you come here). To our surprise, we received a text that our table was ready after only about 15 minutes - awesome! Skylar was our server, and she took our drink order almost immediately after being seated. She was very friendly, and made a couple suggestions for us on menu items we should try. Or order was taken very quickly, and our food was in front of us much sooner than we expected! Everything was hot, and tasted very fresh. The burger was awesome, with crisp bacon, and it really hit the spot. The grilled cheese was OOZING with cheesy goodness, and the fries were done to perfection! The Caesar wrap was HUGE and very good. I would have liked it more if it had a bit more dressing.....l will ask for extra dressing on the side next time - you may wish to do the same. We came for Happy Hour (4-6 weekdays), arriving at about 5pm on a Friday. We were able to get bar seats from someone who was just leaving. The seats did not face the ocean but sitting outside we could hear and smell the sea. We could turn and look but the chairs don't swivel. We got clam chowder which was not the best I've ever had, but a good choice at $5. We enjoyed vodka and seltzers at 1/2 price. We also tried the crab cakes. These were good, not life changing, but with this location, they were good. Lots of veggies, not too much bread, a little overcooked, no crab lumps (over-stirred?). Service was spotty, with every chair and table in the bar area filled. There is another bar inside. I'm sure there were a lot of tourists there, but we met some locals like us in the bar. This place did not seem as touristy as Joe's Crab Shack. My hubby hated the touristy-ness of Joe's (same owner) so I was relieved this was not the same. There are so many great places along the A1A, that we may not be back here for a while, but I see no reason not to go back. Great prices, great view, adequate service, good food. read more

Flagler Beach has a lot to offer. I visited this fun and funky place on a trip from up north to visit my Mom a few years ago. I had the Shrimp and Grits and they were DELICIOUS. When I went home, I kept thinking about how good they were-that's how memorable the experience was! Since then, I've tried shrimp and grits at many places but none of those stuck with me like the flavor of the ones at The Funky Pelican. Fast forward-I came to visit my mom again this week and you can guess what was the first thing on my list of things to do. I was not disappointed. The Vibe- Out front, big outdoor chalkboards allow passersby and patrons to express themselves. The messages were all positive, fun and pleasant. A perfect foreshadowing of the inside vibe as well. Inside, the view is beautiful and there is an outside deck with a lot of tables. The bar is well-stocked and attractive and the rest of decor is fun and upscale beachy. Most every table has a view of the ocean. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded. We were seated right away, but my mom has mobility issues and couldn't sit at the booth they offered. The adorable hostess switched gears immediately and found us a table near the window instead. Service was quick but not rushed and our server was upbeat and energetic. We both had the shrimp and grits. They were everything I remembered! The large portion came out quickly, hot and obviously freshly put together. The grits were done just right-not mushy or crunchy. The sauce was a flavorful Cajun cream sauce with just a bit of heat-fun to eat, not uncomfortably spicy. There were so many shrimp and they. were awesome! Big, fresh and cooked to a perfect bite. Bonus-no tails! (I hate having to dig in my food to remove tails and it happens far too often) The price was quite reasonable, I thought. Check out the menu. I had a Bloody Mary that was pretty (lemon, lime, olives and a celery stick) and not too spicy. (can you tell I am not a spicy food fan?) but the lady at the next table ordered the Funky Bloody Mary. Unbelievable! It was beautifully presented in a huge glass with everything you could think of to put in a Bloody Mary-breakfast in a glass. It was expensive, but seemed worth it.
