*AVOID* Last summer we were in the area and had 3 different recommendations from locals for the best place to grab a bite and feel the good vibes of the boardwalk. Unfortunately we chose the Funk Pelican on our last day. Mistake! The food was bland and underwhelming. The service was way below average. We didn't bother speaking to the management as we witnesses a rude and condescending conversation with another table when they expressed concerns about the cold food, service and a parking issue or something. It is really sad that a place with such a unique opportunity can't deliver on something as easy as food and service. We decided to go to Funky Pelican this morning for breakfast. We got our table on the patio with the perfect view of ocean. Our server greeted us and took our drink order. I have water with lemon while my husband ordered coffee. When she brought us our drinks she took our food order. I ordered the Breakfast Sammy with scrambled egg, Swiss cheese, sausage on wheat toast and home fries. My husband ordered the Hash & Eggs, eggs over easy, home fries and wheat toast. While we were waiting on our food we scored high on the view with several dolphins going by! I always give restaurants three chances. When I first had moved to Flagler Beach I had tried it out and got completely ignored by the wait staff. I ended up waiting so long that I walked out. I literally didn't even get to order anything, was just given a menu then ignored. The second time again, I was ignored by wait staff there was also no host in sight, so I basically sat myself at a high top - all the servers were on their phones when I was looking around. It took so long for them to even take my order for just an appetizer . I'm not sure why everyone hypes this place up - I get that it's the only restaurant on the actual ocean I suppose but just be prepared for horrible service. For my money, the twisted shrimp is grand and a huge portion, which you could either share with one to three people or just have for your meal. The garlic parmesan cream sauce was absolutely magical and creamy. That went well with fried-to-perfection shrimp that were well-sized and crispy. Due to the twisted shrimp, I could have gone without the Grilled Cheddar with bacon and a side of cheddar grits. However, I didn't anticipate the portion size of the latter, so I opted to devour the former, which both were incredibly tasty. I took The shrimp I didn't eat for leftovers and reheated it in the toaster oven for dinner the next day, which turned out just as tasty as when I initially received the order from the kitchen. The grilled cheddar was delicious on thick-cut bread with beautiful strips of bacon. The cheddar grits were incredibly satisfying as I didn't feel like ordering fries, which originally came with the meal, but I substituted them. I love the hot sauce caddie, where I sampled multiple bottles of hot sauces with my cheddar grits. It was magical--very magical. You have to ask for the hot sauce, which then you will realize they give you options. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. The cool coral reef-colored dining area was comfortable and relaxing as we ate our meal. The server, who ultimately served us after we waited a few minutes, was prompt and had our drinks and meals over fast. I was driving home along A1A in Flagler Beach and decided to stop here for lunch on a weekday. I was fortunate to get a seat on their outdoor deck with a gorgeous view. The Funky Pelican! You can't miss it. It's located right on Flagler's "main st" area, near the pier. It's right in the center of the action. It also says "Flagler Beach" in huge letters on the roof. We got takeout and it was a little hard to find parking. It was a week day yet the area was busy. All of the street parking was taken up so I found parking on a side street and walked over. The food was ready promptly and the staff was very friendly. Now to the important part, the food. Delicious! I had this divine Cajun fish sandwich. My husband ordered the Jambalaya extra spicy $21.00 it was bland and portion was small. The house wine was $7 a glass (5oz poor - small glasses). I don't know who--or what--runs the Funky Pelican in Flagler Beach, Florida, but I'm convinced it's a social experiment designed by scientists who hate joy. First of all, the moment I walked in, a seagull stared directly into my soul. Not at me. Into me. I'm 99% sure it was the manager. The hostess told me the wait would be "15 minutes," which apparently means "until the sun burns out and the oceans recede." I aged three fiscal quarters in that lobby. By the time I sat down I no longer remembered the taste of food, the sound of laughter, or my own last name. When the server arrived, she placed a fork on my table that was bent at a perfect 43° angle, like it had just finished fighting for its life in a silverware war. My iced tea tasted like disappointment diluted with water from the Fountain of Regret. I ordered the shrimp and grits. What arrived was a dish so confused it needed therapy. The shrimp looked like they had been yelled at. One of them was staring at me with what felt like personal resentment. The grits had the texture of mashed drywall. I asked the server if this was normal. She shrugged in a way that communicated, "It is what it is, man. None of us are free." Then came the "garnish"--a parsley sprig that looked like it had been stepped on by Bigfoot and then dried on the dashboard of a 1998 Ford Escort. The pelicans outside weren't helping either. They strutted around like they owned the place, giving me judgmental looks, as if they were offended I wasn't eating the baitfish special. The bathroom? Oh, you mean the Humidity Chamber of Secrets. I walked in and my glasses fogged so aggressively I thought I'd time-traveled. When I finally left, a pelican pooped on my windshield. Not just a normal poop--this thing looked like modern art. I'm talking Jackson Pollock meets lactose intolerance. Overall: 1 star. Would not return unless forced by a court order or lured by a coupon promising free sanity restoration. Second- the food was fantastic. We started with fish dip and Gator bites. The fish dip was good. I think my problem was I had fish dip at Le Tub in Miami last year. This was not quite as good. Still ok though. The Gator bites were outstanding! 2 sauces- a remoulade and a sweet sauce. Both great. I had the shrimp and grits. Omg! Phenomenal! Just get it. My wife had the fish and chips. We took a chance while visiting St. Augustine to drive down here, boy are we glad we did! The town looked busy, but we were seated immediately on the deck with a great view of the ocean. This is a long-time favorite destination of my relatives and I finally got the opportunity to visit. There's definitely a fun(ky) vibe to the restaurant and one of the fun things about it is the outdoor chalkboards on either side of the entrance. Speaking of the entrance, you pass by branded merchandise coming & going. The outdoor patio was bustling with patrons enjoying the beachgoers and adult beverages. My poor NY blood isn't fairing well in the heat & humidity so we sat inside. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. We were brought our food by kitchen staff and had to wait quite a bit before she came back to make sure everything was correct (which it wasn't). Most everyone at the table enjoyed their meal. The fried shrimp were fresh and fries were crisp. I ordered 3 grilled Mahi tacos with fries. The fish wasn't seasoned and the island salsa made my fries soggy.
