Funshi is a lively, well-executed concept that offers revolving sushi, customizable ramen, boba tea, tablet ordering, and even a robot that delivers certain items to your table. It is fun, approachable, and especially well suited to groups where everyone wants something different. But I need to begin with an important distinction. If you are deeply particular about sushi and view its preparation as an art form, the sushi itself may be the weakest part of the experience. I grade sushi rather severely, so take that into account. The rolls were perfectly acceptable for casual, American-style sushi, comparable to what you might expect from a decent buffet or an everyday neighborhood restaurant. However, the nigiri was disappointing. The fish was sliced quite thinly, and the proportions and cuts did not have the balance or precision I look for in well-made nigiri. Another disappointment was the wasabi. Instead of fresh wasabi presented with the sushi, it came in a small packet with an oddly creamy, almost mayonnaise-like consistency. I love wasabi and prefer to place a little directly on each piece of sushi rather than stirring it into soy sauce, so this mattered to me. I cannot say exactly what was in the packet, but neither the texture nor the flavor resembled the wasabi I expect with properly prepared sushi. For an occasional sushi eater who enjoys cooked rolls, sauces, cream cheese, avocado, and familiar combinations, that may not matter at all. You may have a wonderful time here. Serious sushi enthusiasts should simply adjust their expectations. Come for the experience and variety rather than expecting traditional sushi craftsmanship. Fortunately, the restaurant has much more to offer. The revolving-sushi system is thoughtfully organized and genuinely fun. Cooked and raw items are placed on differently colored plates, and the distinction is clearly explained at the table. The belt remained well stocked during our visit, with a steady rotation of choices. Each table also has a tablet for ordering. If something you want has disappeared from the main belt, you can order it through the tablet and have it delivered on the upper track for the same price. You can also order additional rolls and hot dishes that may not be circulating. It is efficient, intuitive, and much easier than trying to flag someone down whenever you want another item. The ramen was one of the strongest parts of our meal. I chose the chicken miso broth and substituted soba noodles because I wanted something a little more substantial. The broth was rich, deeply savory, and much better than I expected from a restaurant trying to juggle sushi, ramen, and boba under one roof. The chicken katsu was also excellent. It arrived crisp, evenly breaded, and satisfyingly crunchy without being greasy. I would gladly order both the ramen and katsu again. The boba tea was more mixed for me. I ordered the brown sugar milk tea, which used a jasmine tea base rather than the stronger black-tea flavor I associate with classic Taiwanese milk tea. The floral jasmine note was pronounced, so people who enjoy jasmine will probably appreciate it more than I did. The tapioca pearls themselves were fresh and pleasantly chewy. A major advantage is the amount of customization available. You can select sweetness, ice level, toppings, and other details for the boba, just as you can customize several elements of the ramen. That makes the restaurant especially useful for groups with different preferences. The dining room was clean, bright, and spacious, with plenty of seating despite being fairly busy. The staff at the Rocky River location were friendly and welcoming, and there was ample parking. A small service robot delivered our ramen and boba, which added another bit of theater to an already playful meal. My overall verdict: Come here for the fun revolving-sushi experience, customizable ramen, crispy katsu, fresh boba pearls, and the freedom to sample several different things in one meal. The space is equally comfy for groups snd solo dining. FOOD: I'll admit that I tend to be very picky about sushi. There's only one place I frequent in Cleveland for sushi. That's until I added another place to my list - Funshi. There's a huge selection of sushi - more traditional choices and fancy creations. We ordered Tuna Roll ($5.95), Salmon Roll ($5.50), and Alaska Roll ($6.95). Each roll generously comes with 6 pieces. The fish is very fresh and has large portions. There are no excessive ingredients added (like veggies). Sushi is five star eat! I also ordered Curry Beef Bowl ($15.99). I based this experience on a previous visit - tasty huge bowl! Curry Beef Bowl wasn't my favorite. It was too spicy. I tend to eat very mild foods. Still it was a very generous serving. The waitress mentioned that Beef Onion Bowl is a similar dish, but less soupy. My mom ordered Tonkotsu ($10.99) which is a ramen with chicken cutlet (other proteins are available). Huge portion and so hearty! Don't miss out on the rest of the menu - bubble teas, bowls, ramen, appetizers, and deserts. The food is really made with top quality in mind. A new ramen spot in Rocky River! My friend was kind enough to treat me to a belated birthday meal here, and I'm glad to say it was great! I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, Korean chicken wings with soy garlic sauce, and matcha milk tea. The tonkotsu ramen was delicious and came out nice & hot. In addition to noodles and broth, the ramen came with black fungus, corn, Naruto style fish cakes, spinach, green onions, seaweed, and an egg. You can also get it with pickled bamboo shoots at no additional charge, but I'm not a big fan of their distinctive flavor, so I requested my ramen with no bamboo shoots. The broth was creamy and flavorful, and I drank almost all of it up. The noodles had a nice chew to them, and I appreciated the generous portion. The toppings were also great, especially the egg, which had a delightfully jammy yolk. I also enjoyed the Korean fried chicken wings, which had a super crispy exterior yet were still juicy & tender on the inside. The wings were plenty delicious on their own, but they were even better when dipped into the soy garlic sauce. My only critique is that I wish the wings were tossed in the sauce. When I order Korean chicken wings at other restaurants, the wings come absolutely drenched in sauce (yet still magically retain that fantastic crispiness). But perhaps next time, I'll ask the server if I can get them tossed in soy garlic sauce. And finally, the matcha milk tea was a creamy, sweet delight that still had some of that nice, slightly bitter matcha flavor. They all help everyone out no matter who it is. I ordered a rice bowl today and was very surprised to see it come inside a square container with a lid. It was interactive sorta. I got to remove the lid and enjoy the inside. I did like that part. The food inside was delicious. They have ramen soup bowls and also rice bowls. It was more of a self-service type restaurant (order on the app, chefs received the ticket, food is made and brought out by one of the various employees). Funshi has a lot to offer. The matcha milk boba that i tried had very fresh boba but the matcha milk itself didn't have as strong of a matcha flavor as i expected. They have plenty of others that would probably be better. It is clean and modern on the inside and has a small patio out front as well. The servers here were very welcoming and helpful. The Chicken curry rice bowl had fresh and flavorful chicken on top and the curry was great. I do wish that they had a bit more veggies because the few fresh broccoli pieces were great but not enough I feel. I took my wife, daughter and her auntie to dinner here and the experience was so awesome! Our server was very attentive, kind and helpful. He even had a robotic busser that followed him around (very fun to watch). Dining with toddlers can be stressful but not the case here. I went here for a Yelp event to get a free ramen and bubble tea. My boyfriend and I decided to dine in here. We were so impressed with the place. I got my bowl of tonkatsu ramen with chashu pork. It was delicious. We shared a Korean chicken wings. They were coated with Panko which were very crunchy and juicy. We chose Korean spicy sauce and garlic sauce to go with our wings. The sauces were so good with those wings. The bubble teas were pretty good. We got them 75% sweet. They were still a bit too sweet for us and might bet 50% next time but definitely not too sweet compared to most of the bubble tea places in the area. I always told my boyfriend what I missed the most moving away from Columbus, OH was a good ramen place. I am so glad that I finally found a ramen spot for myself in Cleveland. My boyfriend got stir fry udon dish and he liked it very much. I usually don't like Japanese udon noodles at all but this udon was ok. I didn't mind the texture of it at all. This is a total gem of a find! For starters, parking is easy and accessible which is always a plus for us. The pricing is very reasonable. We tried so many thing- the shrimp, chicken wings, edamame, ramen, sushi, fried rice, soba and a variety of lemonades, teas and boba. Everything was truly so flavorful and delicious! The spade itself is very clean and cute. Background info - We were a group of 12 celebrating a birthday and were there somewhat close to closing (730-8p arrival and they close at 9). They never made us feel rushed throughout the experience. The whole staff and especially our waiter showed such kindness and attention to detail in every way.
