I told him the problem and that I couldn't pay him until Friday, and he went ahead and fixed my car anyway today and only charged me $35. Okay. I can't figure out why there are so many great reviews for this place. I had my car towed here after my radiator basically overheated and exploded in a parking lot. He had great yelp reviews so I figured it was worth a shot. Looking back, I wish I had just paid more and had someone actually fix my car. The price he quoted for a radiator replacement was less than half the price anywhere else; so initially I was thrilled. But, getting the guy on the phone is a nightmare and trying to tell him about the issues with your car is futile. When I finally picked up the car, the price was as quoted, but then he mumbled something about me needing to replace my air conditioning compressor and walked off. I started the car, and sure enough the air conditioner didn't work. It made sense, given that in my car the compressor and the radiator are close together. It's possible that when the radiator overheated, it took out the compressor as well. But why not call and tell me WHILE you have my car? Then I could have fixed it all at once! Later that day, the car was overheating again, as if I hadn't fixed anything at all. Skeptical after my radiator experience, I took my car back to my regular mechanic. I told him about the radiator and that it may have affected the air conditioning compressor, potentially causing the car to continue to overheat. After a few hours, they determined that it simply needed to be recharged, a simple fix that SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE ALONG WITH THE RADIATOR. Confident that everything was now fixed, I started driving my car again, the air conditioning was now working and the car seemed to be running okay. No more than two days later, it overheats again. I take it back to my mechanic, they proceed to test the new radiator only to find that the coolant ratio inside was incorrect. Not just incorrect... THERE WAS LITERALLY ALMOST NO COOLANT LEFT. IN A BRAND NEW RADIATOR. To make matters worse, the radiator now had to be flushed and refilled, and the overheating from the past few days had fried the thermostat, which meant more repairs. All in all, I've paid more than twice what I paid for the radiator to FIX THE IMPROPERLY INSTALLED RADIATOR. Hell, at this point, I would have saved money going to a pricier shop that could do the job right. read more

Chalards auto repair is simply awesome. I got my front brakes completely repaired and when I first stopped in to receive a quote I was quoted at about 180-200 dollars. This was much cheaper than any other bigger named companies repairing them and trying to simply rip me off. I knew what needed to be fixed yet the other companies tried to force me to do so much more. I dropped my vehicle off in the a.m. and my vehicle was repaired before the day was over and to top it off it turned out even cheaper than what he had originally quoted me! Charlard's is the best mechanic shop I have been to period. Charlard is not much for customer service and being social, but like everyone else says on this page, he is HONEST and charges a very reasonable rate for his services. He recently charged me about $160 for fixing a hard to find issue involving an axle of my car. If I would have brought my car to my past mechanic, I believe I would have been charged over $600 for the work. Give him a call the day before you want to bring your car in. After all these years, and all these times I never did, today I made a darn YELP account just so I could rate Chalard's Auto Repair as high as possible. I was told at multiple car repair shops that to find out why my 'check engine' light was on they would have to charge me $65 for a diagnostic, and I would have to leave the car for hours. Being a workin' lady in LA its hard for one to find the time if most places close at 6pm, not to mention getting one's self around this city without a car. Thank goodness for Chalard!! I went in on my lunch break and was told he would need the car for an hour. Only one hour? I was incredulous! But lo and behold, after an hour he had done a diagnostic, repaired the problem for me AND only charged me 20 bucks for the whole thing!! I brought my very old car in because when I would step on the brake while at a light my engine temperature would climb to near over heating temperatures. Being recently unemployed I was fearful I was also going to start racking up credit card debt to repair my car. I explained my situation so the nice gentleman at Future Auto Service and they were very sympathetic. I left my keys and hoped for the best. I received a phone call less than 24 hours later stating after checking out everything I only needed a new radiator cap. They also cleaned up a mess that was causing my temperature gauge to not work properly and in the end instead of taking advantage which they could have easily done my total cost for their diagnostic and repair was barely the cost of a nice lunch. But that isn't the most important part. Upon inspecting my car up on the rack they noticed that my front tire on the inside where you wouldn't notice it without having the car up in the air was shredded down to the metal. Which means one or two good potholes and it would have popped. And before you say aha that's how they got you, they didn't try to sell me a new tire. They understood money was tight and recommended that I could buy a good used one for probably $30 from one of the vendors across the street and I should do so immediately before getting into trouble. Now I don't know what sort of laws or ethical codes mechanics have to follow in California I'm sure there aren't any but this is something they didn't have to tell me about nor as I said when they did tell me they didn't try to sell me a new tire. This is called compassion towards another human beings plight. You don't get that at most places especially in Los Angeles. So if you have something wrong with your car take it to Future Auto Service and be honest with whoever assists you. You won't be disappointed. read more

He is the most honest mechanic that I have ever been to in my life. I was having a problem with my car a couple of months ago... and after reading about similar problems online, I thought that maybe it could be my fuel pump (2001 Hyundai Elantra) I took it to Pep Boys... and they said, "Yes, probably the fuel pump." Because my fuel pump is very hard to access, this was going to be very expensive. After reading some online reviews, I took it to Chalards for a second opinion. He asked that I leave it with him for a couple of hours. When I came back, it was fixed! All I needed was a tune up and some other minor adjustments. Total bill. 35 bucks. I just had another problem with the MAP and 02 sensors in my car. I brought it to him and he suggested that I get the parts used from a junk yard so I could save money. I ended up getting them both off of ebay and dropped off my car with the parts for him to put on. I came back in an hour and a half... and he didnt charge me anything! Low oil pressure light came on my car. I contacted Future Auto Service and spoke to Carlos over the phone. Carlos was very knowledgeable and told me not to drive my car (which I'm glad he did because I would of ruined the engine if I kept driving). I towed my car to Future Auto Service and dropped off the key in the mailbox (by the time the towing service arrived it was 9:00 PM and they were closed). Carlos and his team checked out my car the next morning and found no oil in my engine. They were able to do an oil filter change and changed my brakes. My car drives great now and the light never came back on (I've already put over 200 miles). I was worried the oil pump might be out, they assured me the oil pump is in working condition. The level of honesty Carlos and his team posses is unmatched. I can almost guarantee if I were to take my car to another mechanic shop and mentioned anything about a low oil pressure light they would of gave me a laundry list of things to change. I think what amazed me and impressed me enough to try Chalard's Auto Repair was their rating here on Yelp, I mean a 5 STAR RATING for an Auto Mechanic? Could it be possible? It is when you're talking about this place. When I needed rear brakes and a fuel filter and everyone elses estimates seemed to be way over-inflated, I decided to stop by Chalard's - and I am SO GLAD I did. Everything you've read from other 5 Star Reviewers who have called him an "excellent" and "honest" mechanic with "fair" and "reasonable" prices is absolutely true. Several other mechanics I had visited first tried to tell me that certain things were wrong with my car and needed to be repaired or replaced but I already knew better and so when I asked Chalard about repairing those items he honestly said "You don't need it." When he tried tightening an upper radiator hose to stop a very small leak and it didn't work he discovered a tiny pinhole in the radiator where the hose was fitting. Chalard patched the hole NO CHARGE at the time he did the other work I needed. This is really a classically GREAT mechanic supervising other great mechanics in his repair shop and it would benefit other Auto Repair shops everywhere to look at Chalard's as the BENCHMARK role model for their own work and ethics standards. ;) read more

Im very car illiterate, have no idea about cars and Yelp helped me out. I never write reviews, NEVER, but I have to write about Charlards. A friend of mine from San Francisco is a car repair guy so I kept calling him for help on my car, and from the symptoms of my car he said I might need a new clutch that would cost me about $900-$1000 for a great quality clutch or he even told me I can go the cheaper route and get a crappy clutch for $500 or less if I needed to save. I didn't think I can afford the clutch but I needed whatever was best for my car and my financial needs. So I went with my best interest. I found Charlards on YELP, from the GREAT REVIEWS, I decided to go to him. He told me that my clutch would cost about $400 after I picked up the car. So I paid him thinking it was probably the worst quality clutch I received after he didn't ask me what kind of clutch I needed or how much I wanted to spend. When I got my car and drove it, it felt like it was brand new again assuming, OK my car is fine, it isn't that bad so I didn't think it was a big deal. So I called back my friend who's an expert and an auto repair guy, and told him about it. He said that it may be a fake and that my car would break down in less than a year if I paid that much for the clutch. So he told me to take a snap shot of the receipt and invoice and researched on it. He then told me that the auto repair guy (CHARLARDS AUTO REPAIR) gave me the best quality clutch and HOOKED IT UP!!!! Chalard is a seriously awesome guy! He has to be the most decent auto mechanic out there! Ever since my husband and I found him on Yelp (where all his 5-star reviews are pretty self explanatory), we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else! The first time we went to him was because my car was overheating and other mechanics had said that it was most likely an engine problem (which would have cost me around $2000). I went to Chalards, and he replaced the thermostat and the problem was fixed for 15 bucks!!! THAAANK YOU CHALARD!!! Then recently, my husband and I both went there because both of our cars were making strange sounds (again, we were afraid that it was engine related which would cost us a fortune, especially for two cars). Chalard discovered that my issue was simply that my oil was low (apparently when the temperature changes back and forth, the oil gets burnt faster and the lack of oil was what made the noise), and so he changed the oil, oil filter, and did some other stuff and my total bill was $27!!! THAAANK YOU CHALARD! With my husband's car, he found that we needed to replace the AC compressor. He shopped around, but at the end of the day he said all the ones he found cost $400, which he thought was way over-priced. He advised us to check the Internet to find something cheaper. Then he let us drive off without even charging us for figuring out the problem. We went home, found an AC compressor for $125 shipped, bought it, and now we are waiting for it to be delivered so we can go back to Chalard to get the work done there. Chalard is so smart he knows exactly what is wrong with you car every single time. I've gone to him after having other places tell me that it's one thing that needs fixed and he always proves them wrong! Why would I go elsewhere you say if he's so good? Time and convenience. I live in Hollywood and he is in Burbank. It's not always easy to get a ride over to him and then he does take a little time to work on your car so you have to be willing to be without your wheels for a couple days-depending on what the issue is. However, it's totally worth it as he has the most competitive pricing, he will never steer you wrong, he only fixes what needs fixed and never overcharges you for unwanted things. He is a rockstar in my book and I LOVE HIM! I really do, I wish he were a dentist or a hairstylest too because I trust him so much! One thing though, he is Asian and kinda hard to understand sometimes so don't freak out if you don't get what he's saying, just trust that he will do the right thing. Also, when you call, a lot of times the phone is not picked up and you have to call back but it's only because he's working his butt off so he can get your wheels back to you so you can make it to those auditions all over the city! I heard of them via a referral from a friend who highly recommended them and is also in the auto business. He doesn't know how they can do such great work and such affordable price. I drove all the way from Carlsbad to have my car worked on and would do it again. Chalard's provided exceptional service in a timely fashion and came through with everything they promised-actually they came in slightly less than quoted which was a nice surprise.
