My partner and I were craving Italian and heard very good things about this restaurant. We arrived around 4pm and immediately got seated and saw a line forming throughout the night, so we were lucky we came early. We were told that they are family style dishes, so the portions would be to share. We ordered the focaccia bread, Liz-agna, and the Dungeness Crab Alla Vodka and were shocked at the portion size. The crab vodka was my partner's favorite dish, and I loved it as well but enjoy a longer cook on my pasta. The Liz-agna was very sophisticated with a butternut squash and a variety of uplifted traditional ingredients in a lasagna. I enjoyed my first couple pieces but soon lost interest in its flavor combinations and it became a bit dull aside from the butternut squash. The focaccia bread was good. I would hope for a more open crumb, but appreciated the flavor as well as the crunchy crusts. Overall, our take on Gabbiano's is a unique take on certain Italian classics. It is NOT family style, in our opinion, which makes their prices place them in the expensive dining category. Alongside this, each bill gets charged 20% gratituty which I never mind, but will always associate with a higher scale of dining. I believe that Gabbiano's seems like a very good date spot to seem classy and try something new, but I wouldn't recommend it for a good Italian fix. Good amount of crabs and nicely balanced flavors, I wish I'd asked for more chili flakes for a little extra heat tho. *Chicken Parm* Unfortunately, this was a miss. It was soggy as if it has been sitting out for a while, underseasoned, and the marinara sauce lacked flavor, just no oomph. *Focaccia with olive oil* A solid starter. Simple, but it hit the spot. *Eggplant Caponata* A standout! Tangy eggplant bits, flavorful, and something I'd come back for. *Gabi's Caesar Salad* Decent, but it def needed the extra dressing that we had to ask for to balance out the bitter cabbage pieces. I've been wanting to try this spot since it opened and good lord why did it take me so long?! I dropped by on a weekday with a friend and we were able to get a table pretty darn quickly for dinner. I was ravenous by the time we got here so of course we ordered a variety of things to share including the fried mozzarella, the stracciatella, the green garlic lumache, and the polenta. We tried a couple of the cocktails as well and they were deeelicious. Now food wise, the apps were both delicious -- the fried mozzarella had a great crispy breading with tons of flavor and the stracciatella with caponata was light and tasty. I have to say that the star of this show was EASILY the green garlic lumache; just absolutely garlicky with the perfect amount of acid to balance it. I would eat a tub of this daily if I could though I don't think my body would love that. The polenta was fine but it definitely paled in comparison to the lumache and honestly, it was a bit bland. The veggies on top and the romesco just didn't have enough seasoning to even compare to the other dishes. Not sure if it was a bad night there or if the dish truly is supposed to be that...mild. l o l Anyhoo, even with that polenta being the let down, the rest of the meal was so good that I am compelled to say this was a 5/5 experience for me. The dessert was also incredible with the lightest, sweet but not too sweet, tiramisu to end the night. What a great little intimate Italian restaurant. Service was good, atmosphere cozy and intimate. Food was delicious. They offered the type of Caesar Salad that my fiancé loves with Radicchio (and a huge portion at that). The Fried Mozzarella is absolutely outstanding with a great stringiness to the cheese and the Chicken Parm covers the whole plate and has a fantastic crisp to it that some places struggle to achieve. This cozy neighborhood restaurant has made it on the top of my favorite Italian spots list. To avoid a wait, we dined at the bar. The waitstaff were all very friendly and worked well together, as there wasn't one designated person serving us. Everyone at the bar was ordering the chicken Parmesan, so we had to try it (it was MASSIVE). However, it was the Dungeness crab alla vodka that drew me to this restaurant, and I'm so glad I came. The spicy vodka sauce paired with the unique pistachio chili crisp actually gave the pasta a hint of spiciness. Most restaurants skimp on the crab, but not Gabbiano's! It was so so good--I wish I had this where I live! The only downside was that the restaurant was extremely hot, so it didn't couple well while eating their deliciously hot food. I was excited to grab dinner at Gabbiano's last week after an event on their patio. I've heard great things about their food. Unfortunately, the hostess would not let me add my name to the waitlist for dinner until the event concluded, even if we didn't want to stay for the entire event. The event organizer told me there had been a misunderstanding, and to check with the hostess again. When I did, the hostess asked me if I wanted to talk to her manager after telling me no for a second time. The patio space during the event was great. MAMA MIA!! This place has it all! I was here twice in 3 months and each time they killed it! The atmosphere is "Chef's Kiss," but it is first come, first serve, without the option of reservations, so be sure to get there early, or be prepared to wait. It's worth the wait, so either way you win! haha Their menu changes often, but there are some things that are just staples, and those are what hold tried and true for them. Whatever you do... you HAVE to get "Dungeness Crab alla Vodka!" It is by far the most exquisite thing on their menu. Their "Classic Red Sauce" is also delicious, but if I had a choice, it would be the "Dungeness Crab alla Vodka" any day of the week. I will say their "Fried Mozzarella" is more of an Instagram ploy than anything. The cheese has a great pull, but the flavor misses the mark. The "Hot Italian Pork Chop" was good, but not fabulous. Both my husband and I preferred the pasta dishes over the meat, and we're meat eaters. Their "Arugula Salad" is an understated star, as it shines brighter than their Caesar (IMHO). My family scooped me up from PDX on an evening, and because we were so hungry, I turned to Yelp to look for a good place to grab a bite. Gabbiano's has been bookmarked for some time, so we decided to take our luck and see if we could get in. This was such a cute restaurant, with cozy decor, and a little bit funky surroundings. It doesn't look like a cookie cutter, boring restaurant. And the food was really good, especially the crab pasta and pork chop. We like the crab pasta so much that we got two orders total. The service was also very friendly, and our waitress concurred with our dinner choices and even recommended the mozzarella tower/shot glass appetizer, which we enjoyed. If I were to nitpick, I would say that the mozzarella was only warm throughout and not hot all the way through, but I still very much enjoyed it. Their drinks are pretty good. We got a Negroni and Bella vita drink. The Bella Vita was perfectly sweetened, a lil tangy, and almost like a pomegranate flavor. A classic, unpretentious neighborhood Italian joint without the red-and-white checkered tablecloth but with a more compact menu, Gabbiano's looks like its hit an in-demand niche. Whether it's because of the (mostly) reasonable prices or the interesting cocktails, there's definitely some buzz around it, and because they don't take reservations, it's a good move to get there earlier than you think you should. Two of us showed up at 8:30pm on a Saturday and there was over an hour wait. So we came back Tuesday night and were seated in 20 minutes. Just saying, plan accordingly. The space feels somehow large but charming all at once, probably helped by the soft lighting and low ceiling. There's also an outside covered/heated patio but we sat at the bar, which serves up a nice view of the small-ish kitchen and gives you good access to the friendly bartender. The beer list is pretty limited, so it feels like wine or cocktails are your best options, and the house drink list is impressive. My Negroni Caprese -- a subtle take on the classic -- was a nice surprise (a hint of tomato in the Campari and a touch of basil in the vermouth, hence the name) with plenty of nuance, capped by a cheeky garnish of orange peel and a mozzarella ball. The food was more mixed. While the pappardelle noodles and fresh 'shrooms in my Wild Mushroom Ragu were spot-on, the entire dish was oversalted, which took away from the other flavors looking to bust out. My partner had the Fried Mozzarella, which, as others here have noted, lives up to the hype, with gobs of chewy, perfectly cooked cheese and tons of sweet flavor oozing from the house-made marinara sauce. So when you tally up the impact of both plates... just sorta okay. Service was overall an A++ though, with a friendly host at the door and a super-helpful bartender supported by efficient, careful servers. I'm mostly a fan of the already-added 20% gratuity as it clears up confusion and ensures everyone's getting a fair cut of the action. Gabbiano's is a fantastic restaurant. It is a little remote, but well worth a trip for outstanding Italian food. They do not take reservations--it was not super busy on the Sunday we went, but I can see there being waits at other times. The interior is welcoming and comforting--you will definitely feel at home. The staff is great, attentive and very friendly. The wine list is not extensive, but we found a very good red. For appetizers, you HAVE to get the fried mozzarella. It is both unique and unforgettable, and topped with just the right amount of red sauce. We could have made a whole meal out of it. We also had the bruschetta. A couple people did not like the anchovies, but I loved the tomato and bread. The menu is not large, but I appreciated fact that everything we tried was excellent. This restaurant is family style and the portions are huge. We ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, the chicken parm, crab pasta, Caesar salad, fried mozzarella, focaccia bread and calamari. I with the spaghetti was a little more Al dente. My noodles were kinda soft and the crab pasta didn't have much crab but everything else was so amazing. The calamari was my favorite appetizer and the chicken parm is a must if you come here. We also ordered the espresso martinis and that was also amazing. It has been hard to find a great one in Portland and this has to be one of the top. This place is so fun on a sunny day because the windows are open and the outdoor seating is so cute. The server played-up the special crab pasta and it did not disappoint. The focaccia was good value and a recommended starter, but save some for that Parma sauce. The Old Fashioned cocktail with Amaretto wasn't too sweet, I'd order it again. The dessert choices weren't that impressive so we passed. But maybe the Tiramisu is out of this world, who knows. I read a ton of reviews before making mine, to be objective. We got there early because of the wait, so we went for a walk. No big deal. The table was ready before the allotted time but they held it for us. Once seated, everything was flawless. Service was prompt and congenial. Our server explained the process and the menu to us, and what I was not aware of is that this is "family" style, so we chose accordingly. We got the calamari (very nice) Red sauce with 3 meatballs (traditional spaghetti and meatballs) and shrimp scampi. Ok, I lived on Long Island for 12 years, and I have an opinion on how scampi should be, but their take on this completely flipped my perspective. This is probably the best Italian meal I've had in Portland thus far. My boyfriend and I decided to check out Gabbiano's for Valentine's Day after hearing our friends rave about the fried mozzarella. Unfortunately, they do not accept reservations, but we arrived 15 minutes before they open and were able to be seated within a few minutes of them opening their doors. The line does get long fast, so I recommend coming early. Although that may have been inflated because of the holiday. The ambiance was intimate and romantic. Perfect for a date night. We tried just about everything we were interested in. The standouts were the special lobster beet ravioli and the Dungeness crab alla vodka. I never would have thought to top vodka pasta with chili crisp and pistachios, but it worked SO well. The lobster ravioli was decadent and bursting with that sweet lobster flavor coupled with a creamy lemon sauce. I hope they will incorporate it into their every day menu. I've heard the cesar was one of the best in Portland, but that was not our experience. It wasn't bad, just nothing noteworthy. I would also skip the focaccia appetizer next time. When I want a scrumptious plate of traditional spaghetti and meatballs, I trek far across the river and head to Gabbiano's! I've had this dish a few times and it's always terrific. And the portion size is so huge it's easily enough for two meals I also love the atmosphere here. It's dimly lit and cozy. I've enjoyed experiences both at the table and at the bar. I've also enjoyed their wine and cocktail selections. And, now that I'm a big fan, I especially appreciate their selection of Amari. Service has also always been very kind and attentive.
