We are in shock after eating here for dinner tonight... and not in a good way. Upon walking in, we were in awe of the ambiance of the place. It was very nicely decorated for the holidays. Lots of pretty lights and even blow up decor hanging from the ceiling. They did a very nice job on that. Our server came to our table promptly and took our orders in a timely manner. She refilled our drinks without asking, and was super polite. Here's the crazy thing... with such a nice environment and good service we are amazed that the food could be SO BAD. We ordered an appetizer of cheese curds. When they came out they were coated in oil to the extent that they left a puddle on the plate. No crunch to them at all. They were hot, but with the amount of grease on them I could only stomach a few. This is where it got worse. I ordered a French dip and my husband ordered a chicken sandwich. His came out burnt, dry, and missing the hot honey sauce the menu claimed was on it. My "French dip" was wrapped in paper and seemed like it came straight out of the microwave. It looked and tasted like it was filled with beef cat food pate. I asked our server if she could switch it out for a salad, which she politely did for me. I simply cannot fathom how such a nice looking place with good service could have such bad food. The French fries were good and the coke was bubbly, but we will not be coming back. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Unfortunately, food has not been as good as it was a few years ago. They removed their delicious bluegill sandwich and replaced it with a walleye sandwich (frozen? Processed?) topped with a vinegary sauce - the whole thing was simply not good. Brussel and kale salad was very greasy. Beer can chicken and ranch dressing were excellent as were their fries. I would recommend reading the menu very carefully to understand their ingredients and approach to food prep. There are items that are very good, a person needs to find those. read more

Tried this place as it's close to the Holiday Inn and we weren't disappointed. Our server Garrett had recently returned to Oshkosh and was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, he was attentive and did a nice job. Casual ambience and we were able to sit where we could see our vehicle where the dogs were waiting for us. Ceilings are a bit high, but it wasn't impossible to hear . Food was good and creative. Good spot! Only complain was that the cheese curds were so so so salty. We loved the actual entrees, though! Got the beer can Mac and cheese and the southwest salad + beer can chicken. Gabe's is our favorite place in Oshkosh for takeout- especially on Friday nights for their fish fry when we are fried from the week!! My picky eater always wins with the Jordy burger. Strongly recommend their old fashioned and flavored mojitos too! read more

Good comfort food. I think it is fair to say it is what you expect it to be. Cozy atmosphere with beautiful lighting, spotless, helpful and attentive staff, but it does take awhile to get your food even when they're not busy. In a strip mall with nonfood businesses so finding parking in the lot is very easy. When it is busy, like during a sports game (they have a few TV's over the bar area), it is difficult to hear those at your table. Maybe reorganizing the space could help with that? I've had a few meals here and the beer can chicken is one of the best things on the menu. Perfectly cooked and not sopping wet like some sandwiches are, but lacks in flavor. Love the choices for craft beer though! The only other reason I didn't give a higher stars is that everything offered is something my family or I make. It's truly a Midwest food place, but that's not what this city needs more of and Gabe's doesn't stand out from the others. Definitely gets lost in the shuffle of Oshkosh restaurants it's similar to like Ruby Owl or the Hanger for example. Not a lot of food places in this area of town that are not chains so this was a wonderful addition for that neighborhood. I would come back here if a friend wanted to go, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it or suggest it. read more

We had high expectations for this place looking at the menu but we were honestly disappointed.. My fiancé and I wanted to go out somewhere nice together for Valentine's Day and we've never been here before so we thought we would try. The place looks nice and clean and the workers all seemed nice but the food was lacking.. My partner wanted the pot Roast but the cook said they were out of this option so he chose the brisket stroganoff and I had the beer can chicken Mac n cheese.. both our dishes were very bland and dry and it lacked sauce. Both dishes were also almost room temp.. My partner's brisket was very dry and chewy. We also ordered cheese curds and they were clumped together and very greasy.. I enjoyed my strawberry Lemonade though.. When you pay over $20 a plate the food should be flavorful and at the very least warm and freshly made. read more

This place was an absolute rip off. I got a southwestern salad with the beer can shredded chicken on it ($18!) and there was one one tablespoon each of black beans, pico, and guacamole. Zero substance at all and to top it off the lettuce was wilted and had black spots. The chicken was also dry as hell. My husband got the Father's Day special brisket which was so dry he had to add ketchup to it, we ordered it medium rare and it was gray as hell, they obviously scorched it on a griddle before serving. The service was slow and no one even checked on us after the food arrived. We were just traveling through and will tell our local friends to avoid. My meal was so underwhelming and unsubstantial I actually left hungry and furious (obviously). I cannot even recall the last time I have been to a restaurant that was such an epic disappointment. So glad I made it here on a visit to Oshkosh. A nice local place where people care about the food. Satisfying and affordable all-you-can-eat soup-and-salad option at lunch. Toward the end of the lunch period, it's understandable that some items on the salad bar were a little low, but everything looked good. There were plenty of options. Everything was neat and clean. Wonderful and addictive creamy potato soup. Everybody I encountered working there was courteous, welcoming. I was glad I was talked into the cheesecake, too. Huge serving. read more

Came in for lunch and had a delicious lunch. We shared the bacon wrapped poblano peppers for an appetizer. For the entree I had the Sheboygan Brat Sandwich. The brat wasn't over powered by the fried onions or brown mustard. It hit the spot. read more

We had such high hopes for this place! The menu looked fantastic online, but we were disappointed. We ordered the cheese curds and pork belly bite appetizers - the cheese curds were under done and greasy. The pork belly bites were barely warm (actually cold on the inside). I originally wanted to get the apple pie pork loin, but they didn't have that, so I went with the pork belly pasta. There was no flavor to the pork belly at all, and it tasted like it had been cooked yesterday. My husband got the prime rib, ordered medium. Not tender, flavorless. the broccoli and potatoes were still crunchy. Tried the cheesecake at the end - there were still chunks of cream cheese in it. I am by no means a food snob, but I could have cooked better at my house. read more

My wife and went here for our first time. I ordered the 8oz perch dinner with potato pancakes. Wife had the cod dinner with fries. The perch wasn't very good, the potato pancakes were tough and dense and not good. It came with a coin of corn and coleslaw. No bread!?! The coleslaw was warm, corn was good. The cod was ok, the fries were soggy. We came here on a Friday night at 6pm. It was busy, and noisy. We waited for 10 minutes before a waitress came to our table. Opened 2 weeks ago thought we'd give them a try. Friday night. Wisconsin Fry night. We expected it to be busy. There was plenty of parking because it is located in a strip mall next to a gym and an armed forces recruiting place. When we entered we saw it was neat and bright. Clean and neatly decorated. We saw the hostess who said for a table for 2 the wait would be an hour or an hour and a half. We decided to wait it out. Standing at the bar we heard the bartender tell the couple next to us they were out of a lot of food items on their menu. They were sorry and offered them what was left of food options. We decided to leave. I get it. Growing pains. I plan to return and update this review. I would for now, suggest you try this place during a non peak time. More to come. read more

I stopped in one Sunday to check out the Brunch here. I'm impressed. The space is bright and clean look with cool distressed wood beams and finishes, not what one would expect in a strip mall location. I started with a great Bloody Mary, fully loaded with meat stick, string cheese, pickles and olives. Very happy to be offered a beer chaser of my choice, not limited to the usual big name lite beers. Followed this with the byo hangover hash - two eggs over hash browns, voice of 2 cheeses, 2 meats, 2 veggies, and choice of sauce. Wow! Since I'd seen praise for for their pot roast and beer can chicken, I chose those. Fabulous! The Brussels sprouts were roasted to perfection. Service was great, noise level moderate. We went to Gabe's when it first opened and couldn't remember why we hadn't gone back. We decided to give it a try on Friday night for some fish. I got the Friday walleye special, and my husband got the campfire walleye. For the price point, I was expecting more food. I only got one fillet of walleye, a piece of marble rye, green beans and a pinch of soggy fries. My husband's fish still had the mud line and was very fishy. He also only received one single fillet. At $25/plate I expected to have leftovers. We both left very disappointed and remembered why we hadn't been back. Unfortunately, Gabe's is off our list. read more

This is a wonderful hidden gem. Went there last evening, and was treated to the salmon pear salad. It had lovely greens, walnuts and bacon. It was excellent!! The extra sides we ordered were phenomenal!!! Paired with a blueberry cosmo and pumpkin cheesecake... One of the finest meals that I have enjoyed!!! Very recently ate there, my salad was good. My Hencricks martini was good but not $15 good. Same drink, same size $8 at the Roxy, $12 at TJ's Steakhouse, $9 at Marks East Side. My entree was beef stroganoff, it consisted of some over cooked pasta, a mediocre sauce, and some leftover Mom's Pot Roast reheated so many times it was dried out to the point of being crisp. Our service was very good and our waitress was tipped accordingly. Can't recommend at all. read more

Stopped in to try the lunch options for restaurant week. They didn't disappoint. Started with the fried green beans and loaded fries. Green beans were a little light on batter but were delicious anyway. The loaded fries were a dangerous but tasty bite; be prepared to mop up after those. Next up were beer can chicken tacos and pulled pork sandwich. Both had moist meat and had great flavor. Lastly were the cinnamon pretzel and the strawberry shortcake. Visited this place today for the first time. Everyone's sandwiches were great but my French dip was a little dry and the au jus was super salty but I didn't say anything, just ate what I wanted. Then the waitress came out and asked if my sandwich was a little bitter so I admitted that yes, it was. She said she removed it from our bill because she tasted one and thought it didn't taste like it normally does. Very nice that I didn't have to even say anything and she just took care of it. Let me start this review by saying I went into the experience excited and with low expectations. Town of Algoma doesn't have any non-chain restaurants, so it's exciting to finally have something nearby! We went around 5:45 on a Saturday and the place was busy but not packed. I will say, the first thing you notice about the place is how noisy it is. I think the high ceilings and multiple tables really amplify all the sound. It was hard to have a conversation sitting across from each other. Besides that, the space is decorated well and very clean. I had the TBLT with fries and my companion had the Pot Roast sandwich with the Mac n cheese. It took half an hour to get our food and when we did it was lukewarm at best. They seemed to only have two waitresses but they were definitely working hard to accommodate everyone. We both liked our sandwiches but the fries were soft and the mac was bland. OVERALL: the food was good. The service was good. I wouldn't say spectacular, but I think with time they'll work out the new restaurant bumps and will be here to stay. We would go back again. Ambiance was nice. Tavern was so dark I could barely read the menu. Server was nice. My food came out late as heck. I ordered a BYO hangover hash brown. They served it in a bowl, and the hash browns (French fries) were served underneath everything making them very soggy and unappetizing. The hollandaise sauce was lukewarm, and my broccoli and mushrooms tasted like they were canned and they were warm and freezing cold like it was microwaved. There were zero seasonings used in this dish. My fiancé got the burrito. It was a nice size burrito served on the tiniest plate so he had a hard time eating it. Myself and a co-worker came in yesterday for lunch during Oshkosh's Restaurant Week - this was my first time at Gabe's. Immediately I loved the overall feel and design of the place, they have done an amazing job with the interior of the building. The remainder of my experience at Gabe's went downhill from there, and forced myself and my co-worker to walk out of your establishment. I tried to contact management regarding this issue prior to me posting this negative review, but the response was dismissive, lackluster and blamed staffing issues. When our waitress came to take our order, she went on a long-winded explanation of how we needed to order our entrees first as your POS system wasn't able to add appetizers first and the kitchen "wouldn't know" not to make both appetizer & entrees at the same time...weird, but okay. Our first course was the Deep Fried Green Beans, and my entree was the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich (I requested coleslaw on the side). The green beans came out a few minutes before the entree (honestly, the appetizer should come well before the entree, not essentially the same time) and they were unbreaded, soggy, still had the stems on and had a brownish/black color upon arrival. They had a foul smell to them as well, so when the waitress eventually came back to bring our entrees out we let her know that we needed a new set of green beans. While we were waiting for the waitress to return, I lifted the top of the bun of my pulled pork sandwich and saw that it was covered in coleslaw (instead of on the side as I requested) and the french fries were so undercooked to the point they were limp and soggy. The waitress came back a few minutes later with the SAME green beans from before, except the cook slapped some batter on them and put them back in the fryer. This was obviously disgusting and unappetizing on many levels. When we noticed this was the case, we told the waitress about the issue and she came back with, "I am not the one cooking in the kitchen," which after the issues with all of the food we received was the last straw. We gathered our belongings and made for the door, and told a different waitress we were leaving because of poor food and worse service. She told us "I hope your day gets better" instead of involving management. Will never return!! read more

Gabe's is a must if you are in town! The owner Steve is very welcoming, he will personally come to your table to make sure all is well. The staff is also very friendly and attentive. The server I had was a sweet young gentleman named Michael (: I have to recommend the grilled chicken pepper melt! Gabe's specializes in their beer can chicken which is so moist and tender. This makes the experience and food much more personalized and gives it less of a commercial feel. The environment is very hip and trendy but still has a warm feeling to it. I love the bar top area with the chandeliers. Regarding COVID-19 - the tables are spaced out more than 6 feet, the staff wears masks and are very courteous about sanitation. read more
