I visited Dr. Akopian for a minor case of bleeding. Without examining me, and based solely on my reported symptoms, he claimed it was hemorrhoids. I had already planned to get a colonoscopy from a different doctor at a later date, but my GP recommended that I come to Dr. Akopian to get checked as soon as possible, because she thought it might be several weeks before I could get scheduled for a colonoscopy. Dr. Akopian was arrogant, belittling, and rude, suggesting that I was silly for even making the appointment, since my bleeding was so minor. He even asked me, "Why are you here?," as if I was an idiot for being concerned about bleeding from an area where I'd never bled before. Toward the end of the appointment, I told him I would get the colonoscopy from my other doctor. I planned to leave without an exam, because I was planning to be checked by my other doctor, and because Dr. Akopian did not seem worried. He then said, "OK, let's do an examination." I told him, "You don't need to do an exam." He responded, "Yes, I do." I repeatedly asked him why, and his only answer was, "I need to." Again, he was treating me like an idiot by refusing to give me a valid answer to my question. Assuming he had some legal reason for needing to do the exam, I succumbed to the pressure and let him do it. I didn't realize it would triple my medical bill. It took him about 45 seconds (no exaggeration), and I ended up getting billed $642 for the procedure on top of the $271 for the office visit. Before he did the exam, he told me it would be similar to a gynecological exam with a speculum, but he used a lighted scope, and then I was billed for an anoscopy. Do not go to this man, and never let any doctor force you into an exam, because they may just be trying to find a way to increase your bill. read more

It is hard to figure out what star review to leave. In terms of his bedside manner, knowledge, and the visit... I would happily give him five stars. However, I'm very frustrated with billing and felt compelled to leave a review so others who are going to see this doctor could be made aware. This is a doctor who bills both a FACILITIES and a PROFESSIONAL charge. So from my insurance, I got a big bill that was charged as a surgery (I am very familiar with this for colorectal care... When they scope with that little camera, it is considered a surgery FYI) which I was never pumped about, but very aware is part of the colorectal insurance billing scheme. What makes this doctor different is that I also got hit with a very, very large bill for a "facilities fee." I called my insurance and they said that usually there's a little sign or something that warns people who go to see that doctor that they will be receiving two bills, but I didn't see anything like that at Dr. Akopian's office. After an unsatisfying phone call with his billing department, where the representative said she just got off another call where another patient had called to complain about this practice for this exact doctor, she said the onus is on me to ask *every single doctor* I visit in the future if they will be billing both a professional fee and a facilities fee because it is there choice to do so. Which... Lesson learned I will definitely do. Because for this five minute appointment that I had with him, were the only thing recommended is that I buy fiber at Costco, I am now on the hook for much more than I paid for a 1) full on hand surgery that I had with another cedars, affiliated doctor, 2) having my baby at Cedar Sinai and the hospital stay, and 3) an invasive biopsy that I had this month that was also charged as a surgery. I liked his office staff. I liked the other medical staff that came into assist him, I liked him. But it really would've been nice to know upfront how this particular Doctor bills and that I should expect to see two separate bills . This is not the first colorectal specialist I have seen and this is definitely the first one I have received such a large double bill from. I could've gotten myself a round-trip tickets to paris but instead i got a recommendation ChatGPT easily could've given me. Hopefully, my experience benefits you ! I wish I had gone to see him sooner. He was the only doctor who gave me advice and meds that actually worked (not those textbook's nonsense that other doctors would give you). If you have issues down there (you know where), skip GI doctors and ER and go see him. He is a very competent, professional, and caring CRS doctor. The only downside is that he is now part of Huntington Health hospital so you will be paying for the facility fee in addition to the office visit fee. He is worth every penny though, in my opinion. read more

Was referred here to have a procedure done on my leg. I have never had any surgery done, not even something as small as a 2" incision. I am also afraid of needles. Dr. Akopian was great. The procedure was painless, and the office staff was great all around (from the front office to the nurses). They even assisted me with questions and concerns a month after the procedure was done. It's so rare these days to find a good, helpful, caring doctor, that when you find one it's such a breath of fresh air. Dr. Akopian has been such a kind dude helping me with my, unfortunately, hemorrhoids/banding and later hemorrhoidectomy. Patient and takes the time to explain things, REMEMBERS YOU, understands when things are uncomfortable and apologizes (!!) when the exam might be painful (even though he doesn't have to, but he does). And his receptionist/nurse team with Loretta and Olga are just the best and friendliest. Also, the treatment (banding/surgery/pills/etc.) was effective and most importantly, honest. I have to say, my experience with Dr, Akopian was as good as it gets. I think that the older reviews HAVE to be talking about a totally different support staff. I originally went to the office on a referral for a different Dr. in this office, but come to find out he didn't take my insurance. I was about to leave and the receptionist suggested that I see Dr. Akopian, for, I was already there. I figured, what the heck. His admin was very kind, smiled a lot and said, don't worry, you're in good hands. I got in to see the Dr within 10 mins, that's when I met his medical assistant. Same thing. Very nice, explained a LOT of what to expect and answered as many questions as she could. Meeting Dr, Akopian was great too. He was very well informed, straight forward about options with a little humor (which I appreciated cuz I was REALLY nervous), didn't push one treatment over another, and explained the process of treatments in detail. Sure the treatment wasn't very comfortable, but he really tried to make it be as comfortable as possible, even apologizing here and there when I grimaced. I got follow up phone calls about how I was doing and all in all was a great experience. I would definitely recommend Dr. Akopian to anyone looking for proctologist in the area. It's funny. I waited an entire month to get this appointment for my nephew. When he got there he was very impressed with their covid19 prep. The people at the door, the intake person, was very nice with him. Then he was taken into the Room and the physician assistant wouldn't even give him her name. She was distant she was aloof. She really thought she was better than him. Then the doctor came in. And I had heard so many reviews about him, had read them rather. He was respectful he was understanding; he listened to you; he had a great bedside manner. And it turns out he was the opposite. He has a thing about age. Kept telling him he was old. "You're old.. You're 52. He knows he. But you have to keep telling him his 52. Did an exam and his reaction was " ewww you have nasty hemorrhoids " . How professional. Wasn't willing to discuss other procedures after my nephew said he had researched some of them (jealous). When he asked who had referred him he said no doctor. He had gone through Yelp, in healthgrades, cross checked all these reviews finally centering on him. And he said "Oh, A Web surfer." But with such disdain that it was insulting. In the long run he did tell him you have to go get a colonoscopy and then I'll see what I can do. And he walked out the door never saying goodbye and the assistant comes in says doctor says you don't have to come back. So my nephew says I'l come back after the colonoscopy. She responded No the doctor said you don't have to come back. You don't have to come back. So was that a subtle, actually not so subtle, brush off. Was the doctor so offended that it was a Web surfer who had found him. Was he so offended that perhaps this person that he was talking to had a much of a higher intelligence than others and was not going to sing his praises as almost all these reviews have.Or was it that he just didn't like somebody who did not put him up on a pedestal as all the other reviews have. Interesting. Bottom line I don't know if he's good or not. But I do know that he does not have a great bedside manner; he is not respectful; his assistant is rude and condescending in her own manner ( but many reviews had already mentioned that) And so is the doctor. One star for the doctor not because he is bad, but because he hired a lazy assistant who kept trying to give an excuse not to do the work. "I am the only one working for him and I am so busy and your case is not urgent, so I will do your authorization paper next week" Two weeks later, I called back and she still gave me an excuse " I am busy and do everything in the office and your case is not urgent, so wait okay? I will let you know when" One week later, I called and still on pending. Now my sickness started getting worse and I had to find another specialist. Horrible!!!!!!! There are certain medical conditions that are associated with embarrassment and tabu, but in the big scheme of things when your quality of life is not optimal ... And the discomfort is unbearable ... As mine was ... I am so glad I went through with my surgical procedure with Dr. Akopian. As an educator, my schedule has very little wiggle room and I'm at the mercy of my limited sick days per calendar year. My experience with Dr. Akopian and his staff was great. Everyone in the office was positive and helpful from day one. I had my surgery 4 months ago and I don't cry from the pain or bleed anymore. I'm so happy to face the next work day; make plans with friends, family and I look forward to weekend events and vacations. Any type of surgery can be scary, but when you have an amazing doctor there is nothing to worry about. I had that amazing doctor. I was very fortunate, because I was miserable for a long time. Of course, every case is different but certainly, a consultation will help you decide. Dr. Akopian's surgical skills and bedside manner (both pre-op and postoperative ) were above and beyond what I had expected. Awesome Doctor! I was having some rather painful and embarrassing issues that required a specialist so I was referred to Dr Akopian by my general doctor. I have to say I could not have been more pleased by him and his staff. From the moment you get there they just make you feel so welcomed and comfortable. I would definitely recommend him! I'm actually super bummed I didn't go to him sooner. I was just scared and didn't know what to expect and I'm telling you I have never felt more comfortable with a doctor. Horrible office staff! If you elect to have your surgery done by Dr. Akopian, you really need to be on top of their staff. They drop the ball on your file, you call them out, and they blame you. Jessica claims she called me 3 times and my mailbox was full. 1. No calls AT ALL on my call log from them. 2. My mailbox has literally 3 voicemails in it...it's not full. When I ask for a different surgery date, she says she'll call me "by the end of the week for a date"--so it takes 5 days to call and get a different date?! Ok. I told them I had called several times/left several messages at the number listed on Yelp, and was told "that's not our phone number" mmmkay, so why is that one listed?? Not ok. So now I remain in pain waiting for Jessica to decide to call back whenever she wants with another date. Dr. Akopian is a terrific doctor, very kind and gentle and takes the time to explain what is going on, treatment options etc. He has treated me for hemorrhoids and I also had fissure surgery a month ago. I don't know why I lived with the pain for both issues for so long before seeing him - it has neen one month since my fissure surgery and I am pain free. It is truly amazing! I remember I had a very bad issue that ended with me going to the ER. A couple of days later, I was in so much pain, that I called Dr. Gabriel Akopian and left a voice message on his phone. A few minutes later, he called me back and recommended I get into a bath tub for 20 minutes . That was something nobody had ever said to me, even at the ER, and it meant a world of difference. Later on, as I visited him for an official appointment, he started a treatment that included surgery, which changed my life. I am a patient of Dr. Akopian, he helped me with a procedure for a cyst on Nov. 2015, and I must say after the surgery I feel a lot better 8 months following the surgery, I had a previous procedure with another doctor that did not work, his staff was very helpful, yes his office can be very busy but he and his staff handled all of my paperwork properly with my employer and insurance, I would recommend Dr. Akopian to anyone with a similar condition. read more

I always believed in not judging a book by its cover. This is a solo practice which means Dr. Akopian has one assistant to help patients with their needs. My husband saw Dr. Akopian for a second opinion. When other surgeons in town couldn't help my husband Dr. Akopian was able to diagnose him. He puts you at ease and will answer all your questions and concerns. I understand that there is a process in regards to insurance approvals and so forth. His assistant did let us know upfront that there are sometimes delays because of insurance or hospital dates not available. I appreciated that information upfront rather than us having to wait around for a call. Everything was scheduled in a timely manner. My husband is doing very well. We are very satisfied with the quality of care Dr. Akopian and his staff provided for us. We would 100% recommend this office. read more

Had an appointment scheduled for a month. Morning of the appointment, they forced me to change times twice for that day eventually they ended up canceling an hour before the final time. They did however assure me that the doctor would call me later that day and do our consultation over the phone. Needless to say the call never came and no one at the office answered the phones until they closed. WHEN receptionists were available, they were no help at all. I've been dealing with this illness for months now, from the time I first saw my doctor to the time I was referred to this office. I waited patiently with my illness until they could see me. Only to be more sick with so much time wasted waiting for nothing. How much longer was I suppose to wait? I could see how little this office cares about its patients.
