We chose this location because we enjoyed meals here during previous Williamsburg visits. The tavern is located on the grounds of the Williamsburg Winery. So, of course, we had glasses of wine, Chardonnay and Rose, with our meals. We had the Turkish pea soup, the corn and cucumber salad, and the turkey and brie sandwich. The pea soup was different and tasted great. We also enjoyed the salad and sandwich. Our server, Caroline, was pleasant, helpful, and attentive. We enjoyed our meal. Went on the weekend with a small group of 8 for a celebration dinner. We were greeted and seated quickly. Staff was super friendly The wine flight was wonderful. Appetizers of mussels and charcuterie had great flavors and would order again. Dinner of crab cakes with a warm cheesy grit pancake was simply amazing. The crab cake was one of the best I've had in this area ! The special of the evening was a breaded chicken fillet that looked great and a few folks got the steak. Went here recently for a graduation dinner with the family. The Inn is quaint, located in a renovated barn on the property with a nice outdoor patio out front, and a back room that overlooks the vinyards. It wasn't nearly as fancy as we expected given the prices and the location. Flies are a problem both inside and outside given the nature of the location. Casual attire was fine. Our meals were very good, especially the crab cakes. The wine selection is obviously plentiful and we enjoyed the wines we tried. They also provided a free glass of Prosecco to our graduate.. Portion sizes weren't overly large. Service was kind of mixed, friendly but not overly so. For what we paid I was a bit underwhelmed. Slightly disappointed, although that could be rather an understatement. We arrived 15 minutes before the kitchen was closing and were greeted VERY rudely, taken to our table in a hurry, where we were sat down and told again "we're closing very soon so you have to be quick." This server proceeded to slam plates and glasses and cleaning items around us - we were not the only people in the dining room, this is not the service I expected after such a great tour in the winery. In order to not trouble the kitchen as we felt so bad arriving so late to grab a bite to eat, we ordered salads and water to drink. The second server was a delight and she told us we could order something else as she could see how we had been treated. Regardless, we stuck to our order. The salads came out in minutes. We were told not to rush eating, however, we wolfed down our salads as we were so embarrassed by how the first server spoke to us - we got out of there in no time. The salad was a fair size, and to add protein to it (fish or poultry etc) costed extra; the chicken was rather small in size. The restaurant had wonderful views of the vineyards, a very chic farmhouse style dining room, a menu with decent variety and of course, wine from the winery. I would like to eat here again in future as I most definitely will revisit the winery, but I will be sure not to come on a Sunday and arrive late and be guilt tripped by the staff member who is supposedly meant to welcome you at the door. There's a polite way to say we are closing the kitchen soon, but sadly on this visit, we felt more of a burden than customers. Every year, after visiting the vineyard, we go to the tavern for lunch. The tavern is very cozy with full window views of the vines. The service is always outstanding and the food, just amazing. You know that you are being taken care of by well trained chefs, just by the presentation of the foods (see my pics) And of course the taste, just delicious. Christian, our waiter was great as well. I had the crab and corn soup which was deliciously topped with fresh cilantro. Truly amazing. Then I had the lamb sliders, which were out of this world!! My wife had the chicken tacos, which she enjoyed thoroughly. The shrimp tacos were also delicious as well, the burger was on fire delicious and the salad was a wonderful blend of arugula, wheat berries and pumpkin seeds topped with a nice crab cake. Decided to try the tavern associated with the Williamsburg winery for a girls day with my Big sister and my mom. It unfortunately was very lack luster. I was expecting so much more! There wasn't a ton of options appetizer wise but we decided on charcuterie because... wine. But, it was lacking. The red onions appeared to be old. There needed to be a better balance of flavors. No honey. The best part was the sharp cheddar cubes which should be telling. We also got the shrimp street tacos which were pretty good but the tacos weren't cooked. Not sure if you guys like corn tacos but they should be cooked or slightly fried before serving. We haven't done our wine tasting just yet but hoping It's is waaaay better than the food. read more

The tavern just got an amazing review and was ranked 3rd best winery restaurant in the country according to USA Today, so I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. Our server, Garrett was wonderful. I ordered the Roast Beef and Cheddar sandwich with their soup of the day, sausage corn chowder on the side. It was delicious. Good portion size. You can order any of the wine from the winery by the flight, glass, or bottle. I was going to the winery after, so I just ordered a Coke for the meantime. Good food, good service, good vibes. Historic cottage vibes in a wine vineyard. That's the best way I can describe it. Features indoor and outdoor seating. We chose inside and were led to the back enclosed patio area. Not a big dining space but tables were spaced enough so we still had privacy. Started with the white sangria, oysters and shrimp tacos for entree. Sangria was delicious. Oysters were good but it seemed like they maybe struggled opening them-i had quite a bit of shell mixed in, which makes it harder to enjoy but they were still good. I just didn't feel comfortable slurping them like normal. Served with vinegar, lemon and cocktail sauce. Shrimp tacos were pretty good. You get 4 as pictured. Avacado was a good touch. The only thing is the shrimp were a little salty by the time I got to the 4th taco. But I would definitely come back. My fam also got the seafood chowder and said it was really good. read more

Surprised to see the low reviews for Gabriel Archer. I've been visiting at least 1-2x per yer and always enjoy my visits. My husband and I decided to get lunch at Gabriel Archer before having our Reserve Tasting at the winery (figured it'd be good to get food in our bellies before all that wine!). When we arrived, there was one table open on the patio, which we requested...but then, unfortunately, we both used the restroom and in that time when we were gone they gave away our table due to a 'miscommunication.' A bit frustrating. We ended up sitting inside in the back of the restaurant facing the vineyard. Not bad, but not as nice as sitting outside would have been. We both ordered sandwiches - the crab cake for my husband and the turkey for me. This is the first time we've been to Gabriel Archer since the Chef changeover, and I was pleased to see that our sandwiches were as good as I remembered. The French bread was crispy and fresh on my sandwich, and I loved the lingonberry jam. My husband really enjoyed his crab cake sandwich, as well. Service was fine. Not great, not bad. Average, and sometimes on the slower side...but not bad enough to deduct a star (even with the 'miscommunication' that cost us our nice outside table). Maybe if this had been our first visit, I'd give it three stars taking that into account a little more, but I'm confident saying that my 5+ visits over the past several years warrant a solid 4 stars based on the food and the general ambiance. With old-fashioned, hand crafted wooden tables and a cozy wood finish bar, the Gabriel Archer Tavern is a scenic dining experience that serves all of the Williamsburg Winery wines in addition to hearty daily soup and sandwich specials and a fixed menu with entrées such as caprese sandwiches, crab cakes and grilled cheese prepared with cheeses from local farmers. The wait staff was attentive and pleasant and we were promptly seated at a table overlooking a field of grape vines that had not yet begun to grow for the year. The soup of the day was a playful but far too salty tomato and Parmesan cheese bisque. I ordered the caprese sandwich which was liberally furnished with balsamic vinegar, juicy tomatoes and fresh mozzarella in addition to a complimentary side salad that had a tart strawberry garnish on top. My only suggestion for this fine establishment was that the wait staff seemed very understaffed in proportion to the number of patrons, leading to some confusion with orders coming out of the kitchen. One or two more waiters would really help, especially during peak lunch hours. read more

We were very disappointed in the lack of professionalism of the wait staff. We arrived via bike shortly before 4:00. We walked into the restaurant and spoke with the hostess to make sure that we could be served. We were only wanting a glass of wine and small dessert. She said they were getting ready to turn over to the dinner and went back to check if we could get in. She came back out and said yes and I told her that I would go and park our bikes and come back. When we returned we sat down and the hostess came out and said they were closed but then she realized who we were and said we were fine. She said she would go get our waitress. A few minutes later an entourage of waitstaff came out and told us that they were closed and that we had to leave because they could not seat us. They were very rude. We were not asking to have any food prepared. We were only wanting a glass of wine and dessert. We will not be returning and will be sure to let other people know about the lack of service and customer regard. We went to Upper Shirley Vineyards the day before and received excellent service and excellent food. I will be going there instead of anywhere else. read more

Williamsburg Winery, is one of my favorite Virginia wineries - for a variety of reasons. One reason in particular is, that G and I had one of our first dates here, and we had lunch at Gabriel Archer Tavern. Recently, I went back to visit with a few girlfriends, and the restaurant completely upped their game. The food was always delicious, but the sandwich and salad I ordered was a delight, and my girlfriends loved their entrees! We enjoyed a lovely lunch at GA Tavern this past weekend, with outside seating & good social distancing :-). The service was excellent, from our welcoming hostess, to our helpful waiter, & other friendly staff. The outdoor patio was nice with a breeze coming through and the service was perfectly paced. We didn't feel rushed, nor was anything slow in coming out from the kitchen. It was a hot afternoon and our drinks were replenished quickly, including extra glasses of ice. The food ranged from very good to great. With the good only needing little tweaks to make it great. We ordered the country sampler plate, corn & crab bisque, roast beef sandwich, & blt. The bisque is amazing. It was served piping hot with lumps of crab meat & corn kernels in every bite, perfectly creamy without being thick & gloppy. The pink peppercorns on top were a surprise and really made the soup that much more delicious. The country sampler plate was good with a variety of mustards, meats, & cheeses, and nice thick toast points & some pickled vegetables. Both cheeses included were soft, ripe cheeses so my husband was very happy! I would prefer more variety (eg 1 powerful tasting cheese, 1 easier eating cheese) Sandwiches were delicious! The roast beef was perfectly balanced and *huge* (2 meals). The BLT was very good - but would be even better if it was prepared on the baguette w the leafy greens rather than on the thin grilled sourdough & romaine (ask your server! :-) ) We will definitely be back, it was a wonderful summer lunch experience in the middle of strange times!! read more

We are visiting the area with friends and family. It is my first time in Williamsburg and everyone's first time at Gabriel Archer. We couldn't have been more pleased with the service and the food! I would rate 4 1/2 stars, except the temperature became close feeling and there was a little trouble with the payment at the end. Excellent and friendly service, helpful and thoughtful staff attended all our needs, including the infant traveling with us. The food was terrific, creatively made and served. This place is located in the Vineyards of Williamsburg by William and Mary College. It is decorated with a nautical/colonial decor. This is a restored building that has a lot of charm. Our table wasn't ready so they offered us menus while we wait, hostess was polite and greeted us upon entrance. Once we sat down at a large table we had a server that remembered our family from a previous visit and made the experience even better. We had the charcuterie board which was a mixture of boar and other meats. It was served on a slab of slate rock which was a cool touch. This was accompanied by a cheese board that paired well with the wine or my Boylan Cola! I ordered the Prime Rib sandwich which was really tasty with shoestring onion rings and a brioche bun and a thicker au jus that had a sweeter taste. My wife got the Salmon BLT which came with a side green salad tossed in a vinegrette. It was served on a toasted baguette and apparently was good because it wasn't shared. The hostess warned us as we were seated. It was too hot to sit outdoors. The corn and Crab chowder was outstanding. Service was little slow but we weren't in a hurry. Our server was polite and friendly. The crab cake was awful. Small with a strange color and taste. We are local and the Mid-Atlantic is known for our hard shell crabs. They have done so much to improve this property that you can just feel how committed they are to their clients. We were here during COVID, so the experience was tempered by those rules. The good: the place is at the Williamsburg winery and we didn't have to travel to eat while staying at local hotel, the mussels were delicious and the place is small and quant. The bad: they have a very limited menu and when we went to order they had run out of items, so the menu became even more limited. It also took me asking the wait staff to order even after watching tables getting seated after us receiving their food. Lastly, they had a house special, but we were not told if this until after we ordered. After discussion with the staff, I ordered the house special (New York strip steak) to my surprise, the strip steak is more expensive then the filet mignon. If I had to do it again, I would have gotten an Uber and went someplace else to eat. read more

We were seated at a four person table in the front room that was literally five feet from the main entrance door, five feet from the bathrooms and ten feet from the very loud kitchen. People not only pay for food, but for ambiance, and sitting where we did was simply awful. We ended up coming here for a late lunch after our wine tasting/tour. Our waitress was super nice and she cracked some jokes, which we all loved. She was very attentive - I wish I remembered her name. There were 5 of us, so all of us got something and we all split it. We ordered the oysters (which were to die for), a cheese plate, charcuterie plate, salmon quiche, and the salmon BLT. I ended up getting a Chesapeake Bloody Mary and it was delicious. Given how secluded the Williamsburg Winery is, you do not have many options for food besides this restaurant. I ordered a Turkey and Brie sandwich with high hopes and my brother in law ordered the charcuterie board. My sandwich was not bad but it was very mediocre considering the price. The charcuterie board on the other hand was sorry. It was almost $20 and had about four pieces of cheese (which didn't even look like quality/expensive cheeses) and four pieces of meat. It was served with a few spreads but no crackers to go with it. Maybe it was an off day but it was very unimpressive. For my entrée I went with the Gabrial Archer Tavern Salad and added a crab cake. A bit steep price-wise, but the crab cake was perfect- light with lump crab meat and not saturated in mayo. The salad was basic, but fresh. My Mom really enjoyed her Shakshuka too. The baguette they paired with it was huge, be warned! I was happy to help with it. I highly recommend the spiced wine. Nice rainy cold day very welcoming when you come in lots of windows to overlook the vineyards while warm and cozy inside. We started with a mimosa (nothing special) and a Chesapeake Bloody Mary very tasty with Old Bay on the rim not to spicy just right! It was restaurant week so there was a special menu for appetizer main dish or main dish and dessert. Off that menu the pumpkin bisque was hot and tasty. Only thing missing was a small piece of crusty bread for dipping. However, the bisque is smooth and so delicious I would recommend if your wanting someone warm in your belly. Then a Turkey,Brie and lingonberry jam sandwich. It was ok nothing special. But I did love the small side salad so fresh and the dressing was very tasty and not overwhelming. We also ordered the Hamburger with Gouda cheese this comes on a Brioche roll very good and cooked exactly how I ordered! Next we had peanut pie which I have to say was almost like a Payday candy bar in a pie shell I don't care for peanuts but this was perfect. The service was friendly and prompt. Reservations were recommended and in a sunny day with the beautiful scenery and the patio covered in wisteria I could see why. But there was walk-in availability when we got there when they opened but I would make reservations just incase. It was a welcome change to the same old food served in Williamsburg!
