I forgot to ask for avocado, so that's on me. We got the red and green salsas with it and they were both great. I loved the roasty undertones and heat of the red salsa. The first bite of this burrito took me back to another place, far from Tennessee. It was a glorious first bite. The melty cheese, the rice, beans and the chicken combined to make the most delicious symphony of flavors. I can't say enough good things about this burrito, you have to try it for yourself. This was genuinely one of the best places me and my sister have tried in Athens. You can tell they actually care about the ingredients and how the food is made. I got one of their smoothies and it tasted SO fresh with no sugary/artificial taste at all. They make them in house with fresh ingredients! Then i tried the watermelon juice and it was insanely refreshing, literally the perfect summer drink! We split the house sandwich and the house burrito and both were amazingggg. Normally we customize our food everywhere we go, but this time we decided to trust the original menu and get everything how it comes and honestly I'm so glad we did because the flavors were perfect together. And the GREEN SALSA??? I need a gallon of it immediately It added so much flavor and freshness to everything. Literally one of those sauces that makes you keep dipping, even when you know you're full. Definitely one of those places you leave already planning your next trip back. They close at 2pm. We ordered two tacos, Alambres and pollo. We ordered a birria quesadilla and a Asada torta. Our foods tasted good with heat. Neither one of us imagined that we would be sweating after eating our lunch as the only thing that would be hot/spicy would be the chorizo in the Alambres. This restaurant is for people with a high tolerance to red peppers and jalapeños. I watched the food being prepared that I could see. Employees were not wearing gloves while preparing tacos and quesadillas. I couldn't see around the corner if clean hands were preparing the rest of the food. If you have a tolerance for heat, please stop by and try their food. We were treated very well and everyone was nice. If the food wasn't so hot, we would make the trek back to try their Carne Asada.

My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

Here, I didn't see a drink menu and I asked the very kind server for Estancia Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. She returned with a rose wine - yuck! I refused it and she took it away, asking me to write down what I wanted on her food order ticket, which I did. She returned with a white wine, and after one sip it tasted oxidized - another yuck! I walked it over to the bar and explained what I was trying to get and she showed me the bottle and it was a low end Robert Mondavi bottle of white wine (their "RM" label). When I realized that, I knew the wine was not oxidized, just low quality. I apologized and said I would take the glass back I had just brought her, but I think she had dumped it out. At any rate, I get it, Mexican restaurants are not widely known for their vast wine selections, and most people drink beer or margaritas. Robert Mondavi is not a bad label, but the bottle this Phil's carries is their low, low, end. Despite the wine snafu, the hubs and I enjoyed a birthday dinner for me with him enjoying their burrito (I think it was pork) and me trying to replicate my Sorority Sister's shrimp and chicken fajitas with the chicken fajita dinner. The chicken was tender and well seasoned meaning the fajitas were a win for me.
