This was my 2nd visit to Gaia.. the first was a positive experience. I didn't know the young woman who I was assigned to . She seemed distant and disconnected from her clients. She did not say a word to me. I picked out 3 shades in the same color range and started to explain that i wanted to go from light to dark and then repeat the last 2 darker colors. She stopped me mid sentence and said, "yes, yes i know". She didn't say a word after. She cut my nails in a shape which I dislike very much. I wasn't sure if she would file them before painting them. She didn't. The color pattern was NOT what I wanted. When she finished she got up and left! No nail dryer gadget, no thank you... no direction as to what to do next. She would not have known if I had been there before. I waited 6 minutes thinking, surely she'll be back. Nope. I went to pay the $30. My nails were NOT dry, and getting my wallet out smudged one a little. I told the person taking my payment what a disappointing experience I had. And the color was not all the way to the cuticle.. there was a noticeable gap that just looked ugly. She said she would re-do my nails, but I did not have another 45 minutes. I said that a customer needs to be listened to carefully and not shut down. And also, to leave abruptly seemed rude. A week later the nail polish started chipping. I won't be going back. read more

Pedicures are hit or miss. The ambience is gentle, the dim lights make for a calm experience. Depending on technician, the care varies. I wish I had gotten the gals name but she took extra time to help file down calluses, advised me on future at home remedies to avoid ingrown toe nails, and was the least bit annoyed when I asked to change the color couple times. I completely understand how that could be frustrating for the technician, I appreciated her patience. Donna is a manicure master. She is kind, offers color options outside of the standard, and gas a sharp memory. Every time she does my nails I don't have to come back for easily 4 weeks. I had a good first time experience here today. Suka did my gels nails and she was very precise and methodical. I love the way my nails look. The environment is dark and relaxing with soft music. By the end of my my manicure I wanted to take a nap! The other staff members were very friendly and helpful as well. They made sure I had a seat next to me for my 3 year old to sit with me and when I couldn't help her because my hands were occupied, the woman who seemed to kind of manage the whole place asked if she could help. It was great. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is two things. One, this is in that shopping center on the corner of Oak Grove and Ygnacio Valley is that incredibly crowded and busy. There are waaay too many businesses in this small area, and the parking is just horrendous. I came in at 1pm on Thursday and I had to go around two times before I found a spot, and to be honest, it was pretty far. They have more of a parking structure behind Safeway, but that's super far from most of the businesses, so I prefer not to use that. The second reason is the specific spot they had me sitting during my manicure was quite small. I am 5'8'' (not that tall) and I felt like I couldn't scoot in enough to be completely comfortable without having to slouch my back to put my hands forward. When I did scoot in to make it more comfortable for me, my knees were literally banging with Suka's the entire time. I kept thinking about my best friend who is 6'2'' and I don't think she'd be able to sit in those desks! I know they're probably trying to save space, but maybe if someone is a little on the taller side, they can have a different spot for them? I felt like I either couldn't get in a comfortable position for the duration of my manicure or I'd have to sit with my knees pressed against someone else the whole time. Otherwise I am definitely happy with my nails and am looking forward to seeing the longevity of them. read more

I've tried them a few times and it's hit or miss. The hits - many wonderful technicians deliver a mani pedi that looks great at the end and stay put. Just make sure you find a good person and ALWAYS make appointments with them. The miss - if you are a walk in, or get a basic package, you will likely get a more junior, less experienced/skilled technician. Unfortunately, less experienced means you're more likely to get cut, over file your nails, get stones that are too hot and burn you, and cut short massages. So...make sure you make an appointment with someone who is really good and stick with them. The one and only technician who is great with acrylics is Donna. We have not had luck with others. If you have a gift certificate it's fine (make an appointment!), but otherwise they charge a lot for the same service that you can get elsewhere more consistent quality. read more

I literally drive 50 mins round trip twice a month for my pedicure at Gaia's. I haven't found the same level of service in Oakland/Berkeley. The dim lights, luxe massage chairs and calm tunes set the ambiance in the second half of the nail salon. I always always get the lavender pedicure which includes regular service plus scented foot scrub, leg mask, hot wax and hot stone massage. To avoid the mother/daughter (4-7 year olds) crowd go on the earlier side or close to closing. On this particular visit two mom friends rolled in with their 3 kids and baby. They were ridiculously loud. Between the high pitched kid voices and their equally matched moms I nearly lost my mind. I'm a mom myself to a super active 6 year old which is why I never bring them to the nail salon. Sigh normally it's super peaceful. read more

I've been coming here for mani and pedi for several years. In the beginning, it was such a treat; lovely, calm atmosphere. I love the techs here, they are all so nice. But the last few times I've gone, my nails haven't lasted. There are always a couple of nails that are rough and the polish is either not smooth and or chips off quickly. The last time I went ( yesterday) the young lady who did my pedicure was very sweet and did a nice job, but didn't seem to understand or speak English, so that was frustrating since I don't speak any Vietnamese. Since my last review I've been a regular for pedicures and decided to give a gel mani a try. Unfortunately, the chrome powder started to peel at the tips and so at least this time I called and they offered a re-do we simply added another chrome dip on the old mani (I suggested going darker (my tech gave me attitude she got up and had someone else step in) as the base was black and thank goodness I did because it's been two days and my nails are chipping and a chunk of gel came off. :( I still like the place for pedi's though. read more

I went here at least 10 times before I decided to write a review. pros: the room where you get a pedi has dimmed lights can be relaxing and Donna who works the front is nice cons: services are extremely inconsistent and when I mentioned that, I was told to request Trane, who happens to be always booked. I've had some good services and some really bad services. My last pedicure lasted literally 12 minutes and she sped through it so fast that it wasn't relaxing and she spent no time actually cleaning my cuticles. Mind you the pedi was $45 they also don't ask people to stop talking on their cell phones during services. I have gone here alone many times for pedicures and paid their regular price on the menu. Brought my husband along today for the same exact services and they charged us 80 dollars more as soon as they saw him paying they charged up the price. 20 extra for this, 20 extra for that, 20 extra for blah blah was their excuse. I was recently at Gaia to have a pedicure and a manicure for my 11 year old daughter. I have been coming to this place for a few years and have consistently had a good experience, regardless of which technician works on my feet. Today was an unpleasant experience and despite having come to this place for several years, I don't think I'll be coming back. My appointment today was for 1 PM. I showed up on time with my daughter. They sat us both down and they started my daughter's manicure. I asked if she could get a design and they said no problem. At about 1:15 her manicure was over and there was no design and the technician left. She was clearly moving onto the next customer. I was still sitting there waiting for my pedicure because they had not started my feet yet. When my daughter has been there previously for a manicure, they usually give her a little lotion and a hand massage. All this woman did was paint her nails and use a nail file and that was it. Finally, the technician came to do my feet around 1:20 and she apologized that she was late, and I told her, no problem. That should've been my first signal that she was going to rush through the pedicure which in the end lasted 22 minutes. She had to go back because she didn't cut my toenails short enough when I had asked her to do that at the beginning. She kept looking around, moving her hands so quickly, and she even dropped one of the stones on the floor. I stopped her and asked if maybe someone else should work on my feet because she seemed very rushed and stressed out. She shooed her hand and said no don't worry, I will fix it after I'm done with the massage which lasted less than a minute.. Well at 1:45, both my daughter and I left. Usually when I go there, my pedicure takes around 45 minutes and sometimes even close to an hour. I really think that when their salon is busy, the priority isn't creating positive experiences and good service for their customers but rather pushing people through as quickly as possible. I did appreciate that the manager offered to give me $10 off on my next pedicure, but I declined it because after today's experience, it would be really hard for me to go back. read more

If you want to have a relaxing pedicure experience. This place provides that. They have a separate room with low lighting dedicated to pedicures. It feels so relaxing. Their options for pedicure are fantastic and my favorite thus far has been the jelly pedicure. The price is a tad steep but it truly feels like a guilty pleasure that leaves you feeling callus free, exfoliated and hydrated. I also do the powder dip manicure and i love how all technicians i have worked with so far have mastered the art of making them look natural. Highly recommend bringing cash to avoid the $3 dollar fee for using a credit card. Also, they seem happier when you do. read more
