I was very impressed with the work of Galaxia Concrete. The work was excellent quality at a great price! My very old garage slab needed a major repair including the foundation on one wall. Galaxia replaced a 4 ft section of the slab along the length of the garage including the foundation under that wall. They also replaced the mud sill. They did a great job supporting the garage while the foundation was removed and they corrected significant sinkage in one corner. Their work was so efficient and high quality. We met Miguel in 2021, upon moving to our new home, and got a quote for redoing the concrete deck surrounding the pool. We ended up waiting on the work until this fall. Reached back out to Miguel to get an updated bid. As others have said, he offers a very competitive price. Which understandably makes you question -- how. With a few other quotes and multiple conversations (in person, email text) we went with Miguel. We have chosen Miguel's proposal after two others. He gave us a $300 discount and free thin overlay on our porch. For the driveway and backyard $35,500 and $4,500 for stain protection. He said one week to finish the job, then two weeks later for the staining. The workers were on time and have their roles on site. They came with heavy duty machinery. As the project progressed. We noticed the workers skills are questionable. The carelessness and no attention to details are not there. The day after the cement was poured. The workers were walking freely on it. We went outside to look around. And saw the supposed circle around the tree has two sharp corners sticking out. They are positioned on 10 and 2. Then we noticed markings of dropped and dragged tools on the new cement floor. They over used the power wash, left the fence and color concrete in streaks. There is a huge discoloration on the cement he can't explain or fix. Cracked our brick retaining wall. But what was more upsetting is that they decided not to pour concrete on a section on the back side. So now, you can visibly see that they don't match. There's also a sitting puddle that won't drain. Also, on day four. My husband discovered our shed foundation was cracked badly. We went to reviewed it on the cameras. And sure enough saw the workers opened our shed door just looking at the damaged floor. Didn't notify us about it. Unfortunately, this is not the only crack we found. There's a huge crack across the whole garage floor. Didn't notice until we were able to moved the car out two weeks later. Disappointed at the level of work. Every time they tried to fix the issue, they make it worse. We didn't feel like we hired licensed professionals. We had spent too much money and still have to fix their errors. Miguel and the guys do very good work. I had them redo all the concrete around my pool. Miguel planned out the project showing a good depth of knowledge. They removed and re-poured about half the concrete and just patched and re-skinned the other half. It looks great. My only complaint is that they could have been more careful of the small details, like getting concrete in the rails for the pool cover. And they could have been better at cleaning up after themselves. I would have liked for them to come back for a couple of hours to finish the work. Worst decision I have ever made hiring any contractor. Miguel (the owner) among other things (I won't mention all to be brief) decided to set the entire elevation of our backyard patio 2¼" too high. We had agreed on the elevation to match adjacent finished floor. His response to our problem was that excavating deeper was going to to cost him too much. Also, the concrete is higher than, and poured up over the bottom rail of our fence. Honestly, if he miscalculated cost and came out with that before pouring, I probably would have paid extra. Our yard used to be a mess. Previously, was improperly sloped for water drainage, and full of so much dirt, it was unmaintainable during times of drought. We developed a plan to try to re-do most of the yard, including stamped concrete, a pathway, shed pad, landscaping rocks, etc. Miguel came out and helped me create a vision of what we needed. This included help with planning, choice in stamping, colors, etc. He's a very nice and honest guy, fair priced, and has amazing workmanship. He and his crew worked so hard to get the job right. He and his crew even worked through Thanksgiving to ensure the schedule was done right! For our property, they poured thousands of square feet of concrete, several hundred square feet of stamped designer looking concrete and several hundred square feet of rocks. We cannot get over how good it now looks. In addition, they even filled in a hole, fixed a crack, fixed a small bad area in concrete not part of this work, and moved some dirt to properly slope an area that was my own project. Very, very helpful! One of the most important items to me - Miguel is extremely good at sloping and drainage. We have not had a single flooding issue on our property, ever since - even with the tremendous storms we've had lately. If the old setup was present for these storms, we would have had catastrophic flooding.  The sloping is so unnoticeable, yet so effective, that it's a masterpiece on how the drainage is perfect with this combination. Some might say that this is not a big deal, but for us, it is. Because we had years of fighting this, and this was an enormous project of so much concrete, that one mistake could easily cause even minor issues. The pictures don't do justice to the work - I waited until a little later to take pictures, because I wanted to take care of the grassy areas, to make it look a little better. However, it would not be fair to wait until I finished the lawn work, since that is still months away. The large rocks at the base of the fence are not part of this work - they are to prevent a recent skunk problem we've had. Also, some discoloration on the concrete is from the neighbor's trees, which drop some kind of berry. The color was consistent and perfect to our liking. Hi, I'm writing to complain about one of the drivers. I work for a local school district. This morning at approximately 7:35am one of our school busses was at their routine stop picking up students while the RED STOP SIGN was out and BLINKING (indicating you need to stop). I myself was also in the middle of the street holding a BIG RED STOP SIGN. While most cars stopped the driver of this company wasn't happy and started honking his horn to make all the other drivers continue to drive (which they didn't, thank you to all the other drivers). I then called the number on the truck to talk with the supervisor and I assume the number on the truck belonged to the driver of the truck and he hung up on me. [Edit] Coincidentally, I just met with a drainage contractor who had a similar experience with Galaxia. It seems that Miguel got flustered when he started asking for details as well. Folks, there are so so so many concrete contractors. Do you homework and ask A LOT of questions and work with one who is proud to share the details of their impeccable work and process. And think critically about what is being said in a Yelp review -- e.g., what is the service you're paying for and does the content of the review have any impact to the quality of the service that you're in the market for?? What is the risk I'm taking on by not taking taking Yelp reviews seriously? I definitely rely on Yelp review to sort through the jungle of contractors, now that I'm in the home improvement phase of my life. Finding the right contractor can be challenging - many cut corners to get your business with a low price. Sad to say that I've been a victim to this a few times already -- it's difficult to say no to saving a ton of money, right?? Anyway, I hope that companies like Galaxia start taking these feedback seriously and continue to learn and become better companies. Growth mindset, folks! ********* Miguel and I had a reasonably sized residential project scheduled for mid-may - he called to cancel yesterday because he said "YOU ARE ASKING TOO MANY QUESTIONS". Two possible explanation for this: 1) too much ego and zero empathy to field customer questions because he has a "how dare you ask me questions about my line of work - you should just trust me 100%"; or 2) he cuts corners to minimize his costs and does not like all the questioning since the truth will come out. To be clear, his price was the LOWEST -- by as much as 40% lower than the highest bid I received (I had 5 bids). The questions I asked were: 1) What size rebar do you use and how far apart do you set them? 2) Do you use dobies? 3) How thick will my patios and pathways be poured? 4) How many people will be onsite working on my patio design? 5) How thick will my landing from inside the house be? (step out onto the patio) In speaking with two highest bid companies, they advised that I ask thorough set of questions to get clarity around his process and methodology because his price was comparable to someone pouring regular flat rectangular patio. They said many of the cheaper guys will cut corners and do things to minimize cost which increases potential risk of cracks, poor workmanship, with unprofessional looking edges and finish. I had a more complicated design than standard rectangular flat pour, with a lot of staggered pathways and step stones that require a lot of edge finishing and complicated forming. That said, I think anyone should feel comfortable asking those 5 questions above if the company did not provide the details -- regardless of how complicated or simple your design. It does not matter to me that Miguel has his own porta-potty, his own bobcats, "does this type of work all the time" etc., is licensed -- not all concrete is created equal and even with the best concrete contractors things can go wrong. Do you really want to work with someone who gets flustered by few basic/standard questions?? Imagine what would happen if something did go wrong and you try to bring it up to him? The best contractors are those who understand that the customers are spending a great deal of money and are trusting a total stranger with this work, and what these contractors can do at the very minimum is have a sense of openness to educate the customer and put them at ease. Great job for a great price! They were very professional. They were always on time and worked very efficiently. They cleaned up after themselves, stayed on task, finished on schedule, and most importantly, they were respectful. This is especially important to me because, as a woman, my most recent experience with renovating was with a male contractor with chauvinistic tendencies. Miguel from Galaxia was readily available. When I needed to communicate with him, I can either find him at the work site, or I get a response right away via email or text or call. Even when I communicated an issue with his crew, I received a response in a timely manner. Miguel has great communication skills. Initially, Miguel (the owner) provided a competitive quote for pouring concrete in my backyard - together with installing drainage ONLY IF necessary, metal brackets in the concrete for the installation of a future wooden gate, and a PVC pipe underneath the concrete for my future sprinkler/irrigation needs. He seemed honest and did not try to upsell me on things like other contractors did. I felt comfortable going with Galaxia and our project was scheduled to start a month later. To my surprise, Miguel was NOT on site to supervise as he had promised and the workers had no idea of my initial agreements with Miguel (assess drainage needs, metal brackets, PVC pipe for sprinklers). Communication was very difficult as there was a language barrier between me and the workers. Miguel was only able to drop by once in a while to clarify my needs and then dart off to another project. At the start, when I had an input on where I wanted the concrete to be leveled with, the workers were very rude and disrespectful toward me and my dad. I felt like they were resistant to my inputs because they did not want to remove additional soil (more work) to make the new concrete level with our existing yard. Later, when a drainage pipe was discovered to be pinched and broken, I had to be the one to INSIST that it be changed while the workers tried to ignore it - once concrete is poured it cannot be changed. Next, the workers had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them about saving a PVC pipe for my future sprinkler needs, they had already started cutting some of the existing ones they had found and needed to patch them back up. I also had to remind Miguel that metal brackets for a wood gate were needed to be planted prior to the cement pouring, again something that he did not mention to the workers. I had no intention of micromanaging their work, but at some point I felt like they just wanted to cut some corners, finish the job as quickly as possible, and not have my best interests and needs in mind. I felt very uneasy about all the work that I did not get to see since I was caring for a newborn. When the cement dried, I was surprised that there was a big hump in the middle of the yard. This was definitely NOT something we had agreed to since we wanted the yard to be graded and sloped towards ONE direction for proper water drainage. The workers tried to blame me and my dad for giving our initial inputs, but regardless of what we said, it makes no sense that we would want a hump in the middle of the yard! They clearly misunderstood what we were saying and instead of trying to clarify with me or Miguel, they did what was was easier. This was a big problem since some water can now drain towards the other side of my yard and pool. Miguel suggested that he will make it right and install a channel drain on the edge of the newly poured concrete to catch any water that is flowing in that wrong direction. Upon project completion, I was expecting to only pay my initial quote amount for all the work that as been done (concrete pouring, bracket installation, no need for PVC pipe as one had already existed, a new channel drain to correct for the mistake the workers had made with the "hump"). To my surprise, Miguel says the initial quote was only for the concrete pouring and he is charging me an additional $800 for the channel drain (the solution to a problem that THEY created!) and $400 for FOUR brackets (something that we had discussed to be included in our original quote). I am most disappointed in the communication throughout this whole project, especially with the workers who were very disrespectful and rude. They had no interest in any inputs the customer had to offer. Although Miguel tried to bridge the gap, I still felt like it was unfair of him to make me pay an additional $800 for a problem they caused (he tried to soften it by saying that normally costs $1200, so $800 is a discount). As for the brackets, word of advice is to get everything in writing INITIALLY. In the end, this is my rating for Galaxia: 1) Workers - 2 stars. Attitude was poor and very disrespectful toward any inputs that the customer has. Tried to leverage blame on me for causing a hump in the cement. They left bags of garbage behind, signs of spillage of concrete, a vast majority of river rock is missing in areas, mud on my wooden deck, and mulch that was not put back in their original place. 2) Overall concrete - 3 stars. The vast majority of the concrete looks like it was poured well. Aside from the "hump" in the middle of the yard, I would have been content with the overall look of the project. 3) Miguel - 3 stars, overall communication with Miguel was good, but he charged me extra for the brackets that were supposed to be included in the initial quote. Had me see and ok the forms before pouring. They used plywood to protect the lawn from getting damaged. The craftsmanship of the finish work is excellent. I have a backyard that all the water drains to. I was very concerned about how they would do the concrete concerning drainage. Instead of digging down deep enough where the water ran off, ONE drain was put into the middle of pad, so all the water goes to the center. Lets hope it never gets clogged. Point is, the entire pad should have been sloped to let water drain off naturally. There should have been a channel drain as well. Major regret not telling them I wanted this, but I thought they would know better? Bonus points for the genius that sloped the concrete towards my crawlspace, instead of away from it. It's fun when I have to go there in the winter, and crawl through an inch of water. I now have standing water in areas, because that extra 2 inches of dirt wasn't taken out. On to the the cement splash. There is this stuff called a "plastic roll" it comes in sheets and can protect things from the splash, which happens to be permanent. A whole roll is probably $50. All over my garage doors, the stucco, the tile on my back stairs, the driveway, the redwood siding. Everywhere. I specifically asked if sheeting would be put up, was told yes. Parts of the finish are awful. My roof leaked after they supported the overhang from my garage. They had to support temporarily support the roof while doing the job. I had to reset my roof in the summer. Just a tremendous waste of time, that's all. Never came back to remove the forms. Did it myself. This company beat all other quotes by $1500. I would've rather have paid more for quality work. Cement is permanent, at least for me it is. Do it right. Pics are of standing water, crawlspace, cement splash. The old concrete was cracked and crumbling and there was a huge puddle in the back area when it rained due to a drain that had stopped working. Upon inspection, I came to realize that he wasn't giving me a discount, he just wasn't charging me for unnecessary stuff to inflate the price. He did a project for me in Hayward Hills. This Contractor not doing a good job. When a contractor show up he was telling me how fast and how good he was in business.He gave me a really good price to begin with and change the price 3 times after project started. I'm really disappointed how unlevel concrete is and how much concrete he spray on my house walls that I have to do the paint job now. Be very specific on the dimensions and height and put everything in writing. Once you tell him that's what you want He will play dumb and increase a price. Because of the concrete is not leveled after its rains I have a swimming pool in the middle of it. My small retaining wall it's not level and you can see from a site. Cover some drain pipes with concrete which is not supposed to and then he realize that and he just cut it off and walked away. Very very poor job. read more
