A friend mentioned this place and we went the same night with her. My husband and I enjoyed the food and we will go back to try their breakfast menu. I ordered the Galley Burger and it was okay. Really liked it except the bun is too carby for me. I like when burger buns are a bit thinner and focus is more on the burger meat and other items. This bun was really thick and made me full quick. I also ordered cheese fries. I thought it would come with melted cheddar cheese but nope! It came with mozzarella, I think. And not really melted quick well. I would have preferred just the fries with ketchup. Definitely noted for next time. My husband ordered the steak and he loved it! There was bacon in one of the side items, collard greens, but was not mentioned on the menu. The waitress said that most of the time it comes with bacon. I just think it would be helpful if additions like bacon are always mentioned on the menu but since it's a southern tradition it's worth asking. Disappointing. The roast beef w/au jus (aka french dip) was unappetizing. Although the bread was warmed and cheese somewhat metled, the roast beef was COLD, as were the pimentos and other garnish. EW. I could have accepted the short coming if our server weren't behaving like a jerk. She never once asked us how the food was-- wouldn't make eye contact with me when she walked passed-- I even called out to her. When I finally got her attention to ask for a to go box (planning on heating the remaining half at home) and au jus container, her aloofness came across as if we were interrupting her life. And I STILL had to go to the bar to ask the nice woman for au jus to go. It should be noted that two of the three white women working there were super attentive and pleasant-- our server should take notice, or be given notice. Because I feel pressure to tip no matter what-- I still did but felt shitty about giving my money to a person who treats me badly...how does THAT make sense? Wasn't sure how this place operated but it's like having two separate restaurants. One that serves pizza and fast to go items and the other like a full service restaurant complete with booth seating and a bar. I tried out the Cuban sandwich with a side of collard greens. The sandwich was great with lots of meat and cheese. The collard greens were very impressive. I loved the addition of meat and tomatoes to the greens I'll definitely order those again. THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING!!! It looked like it would be a place to get a decent meal, and turned out to be a GEM! Would come back to this place for sure anytime I'm in Richmond. I got the Choo Choo Burger which was about a half inch thick cooked perfectly patty and came with Gorgonzola cheese and perfectly cooked bacon on a toasted bun. My friend got the chicken sandwich that was grilled chicken breast, mozzarella, tomato, pesto and a toasted bun. We both got perfectly crispy onion rings and a side of the best ranch I've ever had! While on my journey towards putting my visits to chain restaurants on hold and giving local restaurants a chance, I stumbled across Galley. I pretty much pass this restaurant while going to work every day but have never been inside. I also went to this restaurant from a recommendation of a family member. How did my experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Price/Portion- I ordered the Cuban Sandwich with a side of French Fries. The meal was a little under $10. I was happy to see that my sandwich came with plenty of meat and the fries were a nice portion. I left the restaurant full and feeling like I got my monies worth when it came to the portion that I was served. The Not So Good: Taste- The taste of the sandwich and fries were not bad, but there was no "wow" factor either. The fries were your average run of the mill French fries minus any seasoning and the sandwich was a decent rendition of a Cuban Sandwich. The Bad: Service- From start to finish, the service less than desirable. The server was anything but friendly to my table, she often disappeared for long periods of time, and because of the layout of the restaurant, I could see that our food was sitting in the window ready to be picked up for a long period of time. Because of the wait for the food to make it to my table, the fries from my order were lukewarm at best and my other party members had issues with their food as well. Keep in mind I am very easy to please, but the experience was not a pleasurable one. Overall- It was nice to get out and try a new restaurant. I loved the portion size of the food that I ordered and also feel that the prices are reasonable, but the service killed my experience and I likely will not return anytime soon. TWO STARS. read more

I really love diners. Coffee, breakfast, lunch, and dinner at any time. Galley had great coffee, and fantastic food. I had the Smoked Salmon Frittata and my coworker had the Huevos Rancheros and both were fantastic! And here is the thing: They actually have interesting items on their menu. I now have to go back because I HAVE to try: the Lulu Burger with brie cheese and apples, the Duck Prosciutto Sub, and the various desserts, like Coconut Flan. I love to write great reviews and the majority of the ones I do are good . But this place begs for a not so good one . I sent a message to the restaurant. No reply at all . When you ask what an item is and they don't even tell you it has an egg in it , then the egg is nearly raw , it's troubling . Then no one comes to the table to ask how everything is . A larger group of us (six) stopped at Galley for lunch last Saturday, and were glad they had a large spacious table to accommodate us during COVID. The space is cute and inviting, but the staff was not. I'm not sure if they were shorthanded, but we sat for a long time before they took our orders, and someone from our group had to flag a server down to do so. The food also took longer than expected to arrive, and most things we asked for were not available. One of our friends ordered steak and eggs, and was told no type of steak sauce was available, and although the restaurant had a pretty standard breakfast menu, they did not offer simple things like toast or home fries. I ordered the eggs benny, and was asked how I wanted my eggs cooked. I asked for the traditional poached, which is how eggs Benedict should be served, and was told poached was not an option. If you're asking me how I want my eggs cooked, poached should be an option. The good news is the food was good. I opted for sunny side up, and my eggs benny were actually very delicious. The rest of the table, who ordered a mix of breakfast food and lunch sandwiches, also had good meals. We split a $15 pitcher of mimosas, a good deal for the amount of drinks we got out of it. I'd go back for the atmosphere, food, and mimosas, but I hope the poor service was the result of a bad day and not their norm. read more

Normally this place rocks. The specials are amazing, albeit fleeting, and the stand-bys are solid performers. Today, I admit, was a swing and a miss. Last time I was there I went out on a limb and dried the eggplant parm special. No noodles. I hesitate to do this at non-Italian restaurants for the obvious reasons, but it sounded amazing to me at the time. I was not disappointed. The eggplant was thick and tender, but not over done. I'd been to Galley quite a few times when they first opened but it had sort of fallen off my radar until last Tuesday afternoon when I needed a mid afternoon snack and was in the neighborhood. I remembered that the sandwiches were BIG so my friend and I shared a French Dip. It was HUGE! and DELICIOUS! Lots of tasty roast beef, melty provalone cheese and roasted red peppers on a warm, toasy bun. As our side, we had the apple fennel slaw which was crispy and cool. The perfect accompaniment to the hearty sandwich. Although we didn't need it, I also added a cup of poblano, white bean and bacon soup. It was a large cup and very good. Everyone has been saying such great things about the Galley and I finally did get to check it out. The food was actually very good and they have a nice drink selection. But it has that diner feel and you will most likely come out smelling like grease. I was expecting a little nicer I guess because it has become a popular hangout in the west over hills neighborhood. The area it is located in is not what I expected, but there are several cool looking restaurants in the same strip. So much so that we had to leave before we were even asked what we'd like to order. The neglect by our waitress was almost humorous considering we were maybe one of two to three tables she was servicing at that time. Walked in and saw someone drinking a Bloody Mary that looked kick-ass, with celery, olives, and maybe other stuff. Looked divine. Waited 20 minutes to be seated, ordered a bloody. When it comes it's just the drink with no celery, olives, etc. I ask the server why I didn't get the 'stuff' and she said 'we are out' and then 'we have to open a new jar' or some such nonsense. I asked for the bloody like the one I saw. After 10+ minutes she brought me a plate with a piece of celery and two olives. She seemed unfriendly and acted like I was a jerk for wanting the celery, olives, etc. She took the food order, apparently didn't turn it in. New customers arrived, waited for a table, were seated, had drinks, ordered breakfast, ate breakfast, paid tab, left...no food for me. Flagged down our waitress who was ignoring us, and she wouldn't wait on us. Or look at us. After I asked another server for assistance, the manager came to talk to us, and we were assigned a new server, who was fine and friendly. The pleasant manager apologized and said the food ticket somehow was 'missed', and she'd see that it got to the kitchen staff. Finally got my food. It was very good. But an enjoyable Sunday brunch this was most definitely not. About 2.5 hours to get a bloody, coffee, and omelet. Will not return. read more

You can pick out your drinks from the fridge or order soft drinks from the waiter. I ordered the Italian Frittata and he ordered the biscuits and gravy.
