The Super 8 in Livingston, 54 miles from the north entrance at Gardiner, offered a room for $114. And those are the cheap end. I kept looking and found Lure Me Inn in Ennis, Mont. Sure, it's 70 miles from Yellowstone (an hour north on a highway with a 70-mile-an-hour speed limit). It's a beautiful drive that takes you past Quake Lake, formed in 1959 when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake dumped 80 million tons of rock into the Madison River and formed the lake. The Madison is a renowned fly-fishing stream for rainbow trout. The rate for a cabin with one bed was $75. I believe the cabins with two beds went for $89. The open room includes the bed, a dining table, a two-burner stove, refrigerator and microwave. Dishes, utensils and pots and pans were also supplied. There was also wireless Internet and DISH network television. The separate bathroom included a combination tub and shower. There was also a sitting bench and plenty of towels. Owners Melissa and Tom Rogers were friendly and clearly enjoy hosting people. They were a delight.

There wasn't room for anything else. The kitchen seemed to be well stocked until we wanted coffee. They furnished the a 12-cup coffee pot, but all we could find was 3 little bags of coffee that make 9 ounces each. If you don't wash the dishes you use, you get charged. I couldn't help but wonder who had previously washed my coffee cup. I ended up washing it before and after use.

The beds and pillows were sprayed with some kind of strong chemical scent/deodorizer - the entire room smelled what we guessed was Odo-ban. my daughter with Asthma was unable to sleep in the bed and had to sleep on the futon under our jackets. There was no extra bedding for the futon. Bedroom furniture was very old particle board that was water warped, chipped, and abraded on the edges. Stove was filthy - the drip pans were rusted and full of burned on food. Appeared like they hadn't been cleaned or replaced in years. The refrigerator was old and the racks inside were rusted. The dishes were stored under the sink beneath the drain trap, which feels very unhygenic. $15 fee if you left any dirty dishes. We were really looking forward to spending the day enjoying the beautiful view but instead we are leaving as quickly as we can. We are looking forward to getting to our next hotel to shower and finally rest comfortably.

The location is excellent--right in town and close to restaurants, shops, and the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The heating and air conditioning worked perfectly, keeping the room comfortable regardless of the weather outside. Overall, Yellowstone Gateway Inn was clean, comfortable, well-equipped, and in a fantastic location. We would definitely stay here again.

They had an AC team come in and although they couldn't fix the unit while we were there, they had a portable unit installed to take care of the immediate issue. And more importantly, Manu, the manager, worked to reach an acceptable arrangement to cover our discomfort. I took my nieces (10, 11, and 15 years,) my mother (63,) and my grandmother (88.) We stayed in cabin two. We all absolutely loved it. It's situated conveniently between Nevada City and Virginia City. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The "breakfast" that is promised at every B&B was an actual breakfast (as opposed to a muffin or granola bar.) They brought it out and served us a hearty meal as we sat in the shade on the lawn. They even had a cute little rock shop inside, so the girls could get some geodes, crystals, and fossils as souvenirs. I would definitely recommend it, especially for families. It was like having our own tiny apartment to ourselves. It was cheaper than getting rooms enough for the six of us at a chain hotel. It was also cleaner, they had real soap in the bathroom, and they were much less stingy with the towels. It was a great experience.

We had 3 adults and 2 kids in our 2 queens and pull-out-couch-bed room. The bathroom/shower was just too small for a room that can sleep up to 6 guests. We did enjoy their free coffee that they have available 24/7. The continental breakfast was 2/5 stars. All the fruit they offered didn't look appetizing, I don't mind powdered scrambled eggs but I just couldn't eat theirs. They only offered sausage other than eggs and it looked very unappetizing. So unless you only eat cereal, bagels, and waffles for breakfast- you might not want to count on eating their breakfast, unfortunately.

Our room was lovely, (with a large en suite bathroom), and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfasts Leigh made for us were delicious and elegantly presented (real China and crystal) gourmet meals. It is a nice and peaceful location, just outside of the quaint town of Ennis.... near the Madison River, and a short drive over to Virginia City, and about an hour to West Yellowstone. I highly recommend this place!

I was told about the Jeffers Inn by my sister in law, thank god she told me about it, otherwise I would have been stuck in a seedy old motel. My stay at the Jeffers was absolutely delightful, and the owners, Leigh and Bob are awesome. Leigh makes a killer breakfast, and keeps the house so beautifully as does Bob. And they have an adorable little dog named Bella. I took my toy poodle with me and she and Bella hung out. If you're visiting Ennis for fishing or simply just visiting family, be sure to stay at the Jeffers.
