I remember the first time visiting Baron's Quality Meats and Seafood and we bought a Denver Steak, which was recommended by a friend's dad who used to be a butcher. [From the web] "A Denver steak, also known as Zabuton, is a relatively new, well-marbled, and tender cut of beef from the chuck primal section under the shoulder blade. It comes from the serratus ventralis muscle and is prized for its rich flavor and buttery texture, similar to a ribeye, despite being from a traditionally tougher area of the cow. It is best cooked using high-heat searing methods to fully develop its flavor and tenderize it. After cooking it, it wasn't as tender as we had hoped. He said you need to braise it. D'oh! I thought I would support local businesses so I went to the Castro Valley Market Place. I shopped at the Market Place store..nice products. I had ordered a fish from Barons and I went to pick it up. I asked is it deboned and head off? The guy sais to me you talked to me and you didn't ask for that with an attitude. Well I had spoken to a few people and had asked. Then I noticed there were several bills in the tip jar which is not near the staff. I said you should really cover that and he said oh were fine once again with attitude. This was my first time at this location. I usually go to the Alameda store. This was near the front of the marketplace. It's nice to have a closer option for quality meat and seafood. There's plenty of free parking and tons of shops nearby. The only difference I noticed is the service. It's not as welcoming or friendly as the Alameda location, and that stood out to me. Barons is our favorite meat retailer. They are butchers that have a great product. Staff is willing to vacuum seal meats for the freezer. We often get Mary's organic chicken breast and have them remove the skin and sometimes pack for freezing. We like their Norman ranch pork, and other suppliers. If you want a thicker pork chop they can even cut you one from the fridge, assuming they aren't waiting for a shipment. When I am in a rare mood to get beef, this is the place I go. Baron's is hands down our favorite butcher shop. We absolutely love this place. Everything is incredibly fresh and high quality, and the service is always excellent. Our favorites are the marinated jerk chicken and the Black Dragon tri-tip--both are packed with flavor and make it feel like you're dining out at home. Their selection of fresh fish and meats is consistently impressive, and you can tell they really care about what they offer. The folks who work here are friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. They're always happy to give great recommendations or suggest the perfect substitute for a recipe. I always wanted to try meat from a butch market and make a homemade steak! My bf loves home cooked meals specifically steak he loves his steak w/ baked potatoes! Instead of going out to some fancy restaurant on Valentine's Day we decided to have a one of a kind homemade steak! I saw a nice butch place in Berkeley but that was a bit too far so I looked around that was close by and I stumbled across this little hole on the wall market. Not to many reviews so not sure what I was walking into but I had to be bold and try it out! A bit confusing on finding this spot it's located inside a big building connected to other businesses such as a organic supermarket, winery, and a restaurant on the second floor! Mind you this place is located in Castro Valley so I'm not so surprised lol. I fell in love with this place right when we walked in as I ordered the steak my bf went to check out the organic market. The Boucher was very nice and very helpful and answered all the questions I had. I ordered one pound of ribeye steak and was on my way! The final result of eating this delicious steak man HANDS DOWN one of the best steaks I had in my life! Definitely will come here when I'm in a homemade steak mood! read more

Wow, this butcher shop had the best customer service in person ever! Forgive me if I forgot your name, but I think it was Raul(?), who helped me with my meat purchase. Since it was my first time cooking prime rib, I was extremely nervous and intimidated. I've never cooked anything this big or expensive either, lol. Anyways, he gave me advice on how to prep the prime rib by adding salt to help retain moisture and types of seasoning on the meat. So that was very helpful! Lastly, I actually followed Food Wishes's Method X recipe on YouTube and it was a big success! Thanks for getting me a fresh piece from the fridge and tying it up as well, you're the best!!! Baron's has great meats to choose from: lamb, chicken, beef, seafood and dry aged meats! I've been to their other location in the Alameda Marketplace and the quality is amazing. Especially, their dry-aged prime rib where all you need is salt and pepper for a nice finish. For my first visit this morning, i purchased some duck liver mousse as they carry Fabrique Delices products...yummy! Sadly, I didn't buy any meats but will plan for another time as I'm now inspired. Pricing may seem on the higher side but remember, you're paying for quality with a wide selection to choose from. Stopped by today and decided to try the Red Dragon marinated chicken halves. You can find it in the refrigerated section next to the register. I love my cast iron skillet for roasting. The chicken is moist, browned great and has a really good flavor throughout. While the name sounds like it would be spicy, it just has a lovely blend of good flavorful spices. I never had a tomahawk steak and really wanted to try one. This placed had tons of different types of cuts and I got a tomahawk and a NY strip. Both were amazing. So this is the second Organic Turkey that my family has gotten from Barons Butcher shop. It's been a complete process for me to be able to touch raw meat like a grown up and buckle down to season, marinade and cook a piece of meat. So you can imagine my feelings when it comes to a who entire Turkey Wether you Brine and or Marinade your Turkey for flavor (which I did both, despite my brine bag breaking ), what matters is the type of meat you get. I think organic is the way to go and I know the Turkeys that Barons gets come from a good place. We love having near by access to a full service, high-quality butcher shop! It's so great to not have to drive all the way to Whole Foods in order to purchase high-quality, non-prepackaged meats and seafood. I also really appreciate the customer service, as I often need advice about whatever it is that I'm attempting to make. For example, just recently I was gathering ingredients to make a classic lasagna recipe (from the New York Times). The recipe called for either hot or sweet Italian sausage. I asked the butcher his thoughts on using both and he suggested using 1/2-Calabrese Sausage and 1/2-Sweet Sausage. This was a fantastic suggestion! The lasagna was the best I've ever made. Tip - the sausages are seasoned so perfectly that you don't need to add any additional seasonings to the lasagna. Having this shop near by, plus the entire marketplace, has really made a positive impact on my day-to-day existence. Going to the market every few days to purchase fresh products, as opposed to bi-weekly trips out-of-town for a big shop, is a great lifestyle; we feel very fortunate. read more

One stop at Barons Quality Meats & Seafood at Castro Valley Marketplace was all it took to make me a fan. First, I spent a lot of time just looking. There were so many wonderful things on display. I could have spent a lot of money. The folks behind the counter welcomed me when I arrived. When I was ready with questions, all I had to do was look in their general direction and help was immediately on its way. I decided on a tri-tip. I have a tried and true approach to preparing tri-tip, but I've never purchased one from a butcher. He shared the different versions in the case then mentioned they also have tri-tips with their famous marinade. I'd actually read about it online and I was sold, but where were they? They were in the case to the left of the meat counter, but they escaped my notice. The gentleman came around and pointed them out. He then explained the two different options, Wagyu and not. After telling me he's had both, he suggested getting the less expensive, non Wagyu version, so I did. The end result was indeed delicious and worth every penny. I'll shop at Barons for try-tip in the future, but I also want to try their in-house made sausages and their seafood. And maybe someday I'll splurge for a $140 a pound Wagyu rib eye! read more

Wish they would've taken over Al's Market. Reminds me of how the butchers used to be. They are all informed and carry a lot of things we used to have to search for. Their pre marinated section makes meals so simple, and their marinade they chose is great on whatever they put it on. My favorite is their Black Dragon Waygu Tri Tip. If you grab that and head over to the fresh bread right across to make some sandwiches, you'll get a taste of what we do every week. I love this spot. read more

Quality butcher's counter in the Castro Valley Market Place. Just scope the glass encased refrigerated display case, and let your inner carnivore turn into a child in a toy store. I always have to tell the service person to give me a few minutes, as I gawk and ogle the goods. I have yet to come in here for a specific thing in mind. I usually survey what they have, and pick something impromptu. After 3 visits, here's some take aways. Denver Steak (4*) This is an isolated muscle that they extract without machinery. So it takes skill and time. You never see this in a large chain grocery case. It is tender and very spring-y. Reminded me of a flat iron steak, but milder in flavor. I heard this is a favorite amongst many butchers, and historically never made it to the customers because the butcher's would keep it to themselves. I finally got one here. Niman Ranch Sirloin Steak (4*) Many of their beef are labeled on where it is from. And there are choices, which is next level meat buying. This isn't special occasion steak, but at $12-$13/lb, it is appropriate everyday/weeknight steak. This had a better flavor and texture than most grocery levels of the same cut. House Made Sausages. I love when a butchery offers sausages. It is like their expression in art. They have to nail the grind, the seasoning and how they stuff the casing. It is not easy to make a good one. Tried two here. Hot Italian (5*) was awesome. Great flavor strong in hot red chile and fennel seed. Nuremberg (4*) is a smaller German sausage that has classic German spicing. Kinda like a mini bratwurst. Here the flavor was full, but I liked the texture of the grind on the Italian a bit more. More cohesive. The Nuremberg was a touch lean, so it was a bit more crumbly. Tried 2 fishes here as well on another visit. Both were incredibly fresh and exceptional. And less expensive than Whole Foods. Local Rock Fish and Steel Head Trout were some of the best I got from anywhere. I wasn't sure how this meat centric place would do for fish, but now I fully trust them. I've still yet to try their higher end steaks as they have many. They even have separate case to dry age, and now you will have to pay a super premium as the process loses weight and now the butcher will also have to trim away the aged exterior. I've only had this in restaurants, so I'm pretty excited to have it in my disposal, to try it at home. They also have wagyu beef both from Japan and domestic. This is getting too pricey for me now, and I'm actually surprised that they offer it. I just don't know of too many people, if any actually that would spend $70 for a pound and have the confidence on executing the cooking of it on their own, lol. I wish this was closer to me, as I'd come weekly. But I'm still not that far, so it's been a trip every two weeks. So far it's been working out, and really glad that they are here now. I have only gone here twice. First the server has a horrible attitude. Ok you don't have to be all smiles and act like you are dying to serve but... I left it. Second time different guy same attitude and for no reason. Then I got home I had bought sone seafood and that they put it in paper only ? It was dripping all over. Never disappointed with my purchase, fresh oysters, wild salmon, had a fresh swordfish steak recently. It was carved off of what looked like a swordfish roast. It was the best fish I have ever had. Wow! What a great find and a short drive from our house also! I picked up 3 Niman Ranch Tomahawk steaks (Prime) today after looking/driving all over the east bay 3 days before Christmas (including Costco, Whole Foods, Sprouts and Safeway). No other place had them except Baron's! I lucked out and found the last whole tomahawk roast - 3 bones - about 7 pounds total. The butcher said it was the last one after looking in the back for some that were already cut, so he offered to cut the roast into tomahawk steaks for me. He said they carry them year round and can even special order them in advance if needed (although he said they don't offer pre orders within 3 days or so of Christmas - understandable). He also said the chicken they sell is locally "humanely" sourced from "Mary's" and comes in organic and free range. Also you can get "frenched" bone in pork crown roast and any other specialty cut desired. Just ask! All the meat appears to come from sustainable sources so it's not your typical mass produced meats like you would find elsewhere. This also translates into more flavorful, quality meats. Parking was very easy, plentiful, and the place wasn't packed like Costco and other places I went to just 3 days before Christmas. This is my new go-to meat market from now on! read more

We have tried denver steaks, tri-tip, wagyu steaks, all of their sausages, chicken, rack of lamb, chicken liver, paté, lobster tail, and a bunch more.. everything has been fresh, high-quality, and delicious. The butchers are very knowledgeable and always make great suggestions when I ask for recommendations. I have come in several times and asked them what cut they would recommend for a pot roast, stew, etc. and the guys always steer me in the right direction. I am definitely a fan! read more
